Opis:
Death and the Maiden by Roman Polański is an example of an experimental transposition of Ariel Dorman’s drama into the visual language of film. The merging of words and pictures in the film is compared to Bachtin’s dialogisation which permeates the element of the European novel. The meaning and motivation of the words in the characters’ dialogues influences the development of the action, form and rhythm of the takes as well as their juxtaposition with the characters and props.Polański does not limit himself only to a single-track effect. As dialogisation influences the forms of visualization, so images broaden the meanings of the dialogues, creating new contexts. The film is not only an attempt to prove that the alleged or real rapist was guilty, but also a study of the dishonoured woman’s fight for a right to live without traumatic reminiscences.

Opis:
The paper looks into the current trends in the development of Russian and Ukrainian languages as discussed in the latest book authored by prof. Tetyana Kosmeda. The focus is on five aspects (distinguished by the above named researcher) of linguistic processes taking place at the moment within the Russian and Ukrainian language systems themselves such as: word manipulation, lexicographic issues, linguistic gender studies, the issue of spoken academic language and the language of teaching, and sociolinguistics. The validity of the research and the conclusions reached by prof. Tetyana Kosmeda were affirmatively verified, with great appreciation on the part of the author for the amazing precision and research skills of the Ukrainian linguist.
In his book, Patrycjusz Pająk composes a Croatian film canon. His top list of the best Croatian feature films contains 15 pictures: Concert (1954) by Branko Belan, H–8... (1958) by Nikola Tanhofer, Train Without a Timetable (1959) by Veljko Bulajić, Rondo (1966) by Zvonimir Berković, The Birch Tree (1967) and Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh (1971) by Ante Babaja, Kaya (1967) and An Event (1969) by Vatroslav Mimica, Handcuffs (1969) by Krsto Papić, Occupation in 26 Pictures (1978) by Lordan Zafranović, The Rhythm of Crime (1981) by Zoran Tadić, The Melody Haunts My Memory (1981) by Rajko Grlić, What Iva Recorded (2005) by Tomislav Radić, Buick Riviera (2008) by Goran Rušinović, The Blacks (2009) by Goran Dević and Zvonimir Jurić. As a main criterion for building his own canon, the author takes the innovative character of the cinematic language and the rich symbolic imagery of the story.

Opis:
The work of Roman Polański has always been a unique example of both craftsmanship and interesting subjects. Each of his films (even of those crushed by the superficial interpretations of the reviewers) functioned perfectly well in popular culture and as an artistic accomplishment. It reconciled the tastes of both sophisticated viewers and those who looked for simple entertainment. Roman Polański’s method of creation entails the use of a number of curtains (genres, popular culture subjects, popular patterns) which cover the deeply hidden truth about the world and relations among people. In The Pianist the subject of the Holocaust was used as the key to show the mechanisms that rule the world. Also in this case the most obvious diagnosis proves to be the least important. The Pianist is not an autobiography dealing with the memories from a getto. Definitely more significant is the attempt to juxtapose the image of a ghetto and its inhabitants with the film language of Roman Polański. It makes it possible to read the problem of the Holocaust against the motifs always present in his work, including the context of the cinema of the kind. In The Pianist Polański joins the precision of a craftsman with the memory of a witness. As a result, using the solutions known from Hollywood films, he tells the story of a ghetto, which is seen as the metapher of the whole world.

Parabola is the essence of the short film Two Men and a Wardrobe (and likewise Mammals and The Fat and the Lean). Parabola is dominant of the genre, not merely an occasional and distinguishing attribute. In its interior, we find traces of other genres. These include noir comedy, slapstick burlesque, existential drama, the thriller, and drama of the absurd, grotesque and macabre. The poetic dimension of Polanski’s short film, in which reality confronts and permeates the skilfully constructed and captivating fantasy presented by the artist, allowing all the elements of the genre to be combined into a common whole.

The Methodological Problems of Studies on the History of Polish Postwar Documentary The author discusses the narratives and stereotypical (ideological) point of view as a matrix for constructing an overly simple image of the Polish documentary in the postwar period (1944–1955) as shadowed in the untruth of political discourse. In Marek Hendrykowski’s opinion this particular period in Polish documentary film was much more complicated and multi perspectived (in a “dialogical” sense) as a research object posing new questions and opening new perspectives for film historians.

Opis:
33 sceny z życia to film autobiograficzny Małgorzaty Szumowskiej (2008), inspirowany prawdziwymi wydarzeniami z jej życia – niemal jednoczesną śmiercią matki (pisarki Doroty Terakowskiej) i ojca (dokumentalisty Macieja Szumowskiego). Poprzedził go film dokumentalny A czego tu się bać? (2006), który ukazał stosunek społeczności wiejskiej do problemu śmierci i zmarłych. W filmie 33 sceny z życia przedstawiono inny rodzaj doświadczania śmierci i żałoby. – dialektem wiejskim z odniesieniami do języka religijnego. Celem prezentowanego artykułu jest analiza języka filmu i języka w filmie.
The film 33 Scenes from the Life by Małgorzata Szumowska (2008) is an autobiographical film, inspired by real incidents which happened in her life – the almost simultaneous death of her mother (a writer Dorota Terakowska) and father (a documentary film-maker Maciej Szumowski). It was preceded by a documentary film A czego się tu bać? (What to be afraid of?) (2006), which showed the attitude of the rural community to the problem of death and the deceased. In the film 33 Scenes another kind of experience of death and mourning is represented. It is the urban and atheistic version, a mockery of the rituals connected with the death (the anointing of the sick and a funeral). Their disparity is determined not only by their religious versus atheistic character, but also, most importantly, the language. In 33 Scenes the idiolect of the Cracovian intelligentsia is used, with numerous vulgarisms, whereas in the documentary film A czego tu się bać? − the village idiolect with references to religious language. The aim of my essay is the analysis of the film language and the language in the film.
