In this research, we analyze the nexus between knowledge and identity as a problem of the sociology of knowledge. Our aim is to present the genealogical framework with the hypothesis that if we accept that knowledge is a multi-discursive phenomenon, then one way of justifying and stabilizing knowledge in social practices is through the concept of identity. We single out the problem of “locality” of discourses and practices and present the “genealogical paths” through which knowledge and identity are intertwined. Furthermore, our attempt is to identify the specific historical relations of knowledge and identity – through the discursive practices and especially in the context of Enlightenment and the claims for “universal knowledge” as part of the process of the formation of what could be called European identity.

Opis:
The aim of this article, based on the literature review, is to explore the senses within the context of knowledge. The article begins with a description of embodied (i.e., also sensory) knowledge’s marginalisation within the social sciences and the reasons for this. After indicating the most popular fields of research, the article explores three main understandings of sensory knowledge: (1) senses as a source of knowledge, (2) senses as acquired skills and (3) sensory knowledge as a result of (collective) activity. In the next part, sensory knowledge is discussed as tacit knowledge, taking into account the problem of its verbalisation and the nature of its acquisition. The last part explores the social construction of sensory knowledge and its relation to subjective experiences, referring to the concepts of intersubjectivity, objectification and legitimisation.

Opis:
Research ethics address concerns related to power imbalances. These dynamics are particularly prominent in refugee camps, where the contemporary ‘protracted’ state (UNHCR, 2004) turns them into quasi-laboratories, where refugees are subjected to scrutiny, measurement, observation, and analysis by researchers, NGOs, and governmental organizations. Researchers typically conduct brief field trips to perform predetermined scientific activities, limiting their comprehensive understanding of the subject under study. Fieldwork conducted in Nakivale Refugee Settlement (Uganda) since 2019 has highlighted an often-one-way communication dynamic between researchers and refugees, where refugees rarely receive feedback on the information they provide. Consequently, refugees develop a lack of trust towards researchers, impacting their subjectivity and self-esteem. They perceive themselves as information providers rather than owners, lacking simultaneous access to that information. The concept of power-knowledge (Foucault 1980) is instrumental in understanding this issue and reflecting on researchers’ responsibilities in studying vulnerable populations.

The article proposes a new reading of Album biograficzne zasłużonych Polaków i Polek wieku XIX (1901–1903) [Biographic album of distinguished nineteenth-century Polish men and women (1901–1903)]. It is proven that this collection of characteristically designed biographies and an unusual collective biography is an important work of Polish humanities of the turn of the twentieth century that can be placed in relation to both Thomas Carlyle’s hero concept and Jacob Burckhardt’s postulates of the ‘anthropologisation of history’. The three selected biograms (Klaudyna Potocka’s by Aleksander Kraushar, August Hiacynt Dziarkowski’s by Józef Peszke and Adolf Pawiński’s by Jan Karol Kochanowski) are case studies allowing for the reconstruction of the dilemmas and text strategies each time specifying the biographer’s unique workshop and the techniques of uncovering it.

Global social order calls for more and more knowledge of applicable character. As a result, medicine developed certain procedures known as evidence-based research and evidence-based practice. Both procedures are promoted with great intensity in the domain of social sciences. The article demonstrates that such a type of modernisation may pose a threat to social sciences and their development. An alternative model of conducting research in the field of social sciences has been presented, which would guarantee an increase in the regulatory scientific knowledge in relation to the practice and which, at the same time, would protect social sciences against excessive political and economic interference in its further development.

This article is a selective introduction to the description and characterization of the changes that have occurred in the sociology of knowledge since the publication of Max Scheler’s book in 1924 to contemporary times, most often conceptualized by the term knowledge society. A brief review of the main threads in the field of sociology of knowledge was intended to draw attention to the theoretical and practical advantages of particular approaches, as well as their disadvantages, resulting in a trivial study of the phenomenon of knowledge in question. The descriptive character of this article also allowed for a number of systematizations within specific approaches (e.g. Michel Foucault) and within a broad perspective of the knowledge phenomenon.

Via a variety of measurements, 64 Hungarian native speakers in the 12th grade learning English as a foreign language in Slovakia were tested in a cross-sectional correlational study in order to determine the relationship between the ability to process complex syntax and foreign language reading comprehension. The test instruments involved a standardized reading comprehension test in English, and a test of syntactic knowledge in both Hungarian and English, in addition to a background questionnaire in Hungarian. Power correlations and regression analyses rendered results that showed syntactic knowledge to be a statistically significant estimator for foreign language reading comprehension. The study provides evidence that the ability to process complex syntactic structures in a foreign language does contribute to one’s efficient reading comprehension in that language.

Nicotine addiction is currently one of the most serious health and social problems worldwide, which contributes to the development of numerous diseases, including, above all, laryngeal cancer, which may lead to laryngectomy. The consequences of losing one’s larynx are irreversible. The objective of the study presented in this paper was to describe the knowledge of the consequences of radical laryngectomy among students pursuing a variety of majors. The study covered 194 people (119 non-smokers and 75 smokers), who took part in diagnostic survey based on a bespoke questionnaire. Based on the study in question, the author determined that the level of knowledge about the consequences of laryngectomy among the majority of students is average to low, while smoking students have an average awareness of these consequences. Moreover, it turned out that age, gender, major and the number of smokers in students’ closest circles do not determine the knowledge about the subject at hand. The results of the study indicate that the anti-smoking public service campaigns addressed to youth should include information about both the risk of diseases and their consequences, which may significantly reduce the quality of life and hinder everyday functioning.

Questioning the commonly held assumption in critical reception that Ibsenʼs symbol of the wild duck was influenced by Darwinʼs theory, I want to argue that the wild duck flew into Ibsenʼs play all the way from Platoʼs aporetic dialogue The Theaetetus. Following Lacanʼs reading of Plato, I want to examine the connection between the Socratic position towards knowledge – especially the rupture between knowledge and truth – and the treatment of dramatic dialogue in Ibsenʼs The Wild Duck and Krležaʼs The Glembays.

Podejmując idee przedstawione przez Marka Olssena, Johna Codda i Anne-Marie O’Neill w książce Education Policy: Globalization, Citizenship and Democracy (2004), autor wskazuje na pominięcie we współczesnych studiach nad edukacją zasadniczej roli wiedzy, jaką odgrywa ona w procesach władzy i w procesach oporu.
Tackling the ideas presented by Mark Olssen, John Codd and Anne-Marie O’Neill in their book Education Policy: Globalization, Citizenship and Democracy (2004), the author points out that contemporary educational studies fail to analyse the essential role of knowledge in power processes and resistance processes. Referring to Michel Foucault's theory of culture and Chantal Mouffe’s theory of radical democracy the author points out that knowledge in the modern society is a key element of power processes and related interdisciplinary techniques. The author identifies the essential areas impacted by knowledge built into power relationships and discusses the opportunities to generate resistance strategies that arise in those areas, including knowledge-based strategies.

Knowledge and democracy are commonly viewed the social phenomena and practices which should support each other and should be mutually dependent. However, a knowledge society cannot be fully reconciled with the democratic system as the latter produces ideologies and inspires actions that are mutually contradictory and do not always do a good service to democracy. However, there is nothing peculiar about it since knowledge is based on democratisation, and this is best exemplified in tertiary education. However, one may, and must, eliminate barriers preventing access to knowledge, and this is the purpose that democracy today needs to serve.

The paper argues about the role of higher education not only in terms of knowledge transfer andacquisition of vocational skills among young people, that is, the creation of qualified human capital  for the needs of the economy, but also in terms of implementation of the educational role of the university, one currently underrated. It is aimed at the education of creative, open-minded, responsible graduates, capable of understanding a dynamically changing reality, able to adapt to changes flexibly, and accept responsibility for their own development. The article presents an example of good practices in the field of comprehensive student support in higher education as developed by the University of Dąbrowa Górnicza. This approach, in addition to improving the professional potential of students, is also focused on forming their values, goals, attitudes and beliefs which will significantly affect their behavior and the way they use the acquired knowledge in the future.
