Opis:: The article discusses some basic notions related to intercultural foreign language teaching. These include: intercultural communication competence, intercultural teaching, and intercultural training. The article also presents the results of research allowing an overview of the status quo of interculturality from the perspective of Polish teachers of the German language. The research is of a very general nature as it was supposed to counterbalance numerous operationally detailed surveys and provide data on to what extent the teachers understand interculturality as a general guideline in teaching German as a foreign language.

Opis:: The aim of the article is to reflect upon the conveying of cultural content in the foreign language classroom that contributes to the development of intercultural competence. It has been attempted to systematize the multitude of aspects which characterizes the use of cultural studies in language classes. It has been done by drawing attention to reasons for taking into consideration this sort of knowledge while preparing the lessons and teaching methods that are in favour of an insightful contact with a cultural content. Attention has been primarily drawn to the coursebook Rivstart B1 +B2 that is intended for intermediate students of Swedish language. The coursebook has been subjected to a comprehensive analysis with regard to the cultural learning.

Opis:: Intercultural (foreign language) teacher training tends to concentrate on selective case studies developed to show communicative problems, caused by their very special intercultural and multilingual characteristics. It also tends to make a big promise of a rapid improvement in intercultural communication in a multicultural and multilingual society by transferring the solutions for intercultural communicative problems to the students’ own experience. Such an approach fails to take into account the fact that encounters with inadequate communicative acts (behaviours/speech acts) determined by cultural and/or language differences are a daily experience of everybody and require a lot of communicative effort in order to prevent intercultural problems before they happen. The following article discusses what is meant by communicative effort, how past studies on the intercultural competence of (foreign language) teachers account on communicative effort, and how to prepare students to undertake communicative effort in their daily communicative activities in a multicultural and multilingual society
