    Opis:
    The article focuses on intercultural communication, which creates a passage from a multicultural environment towards social integration and intercultural relations. The author introduces the topic by short characteristics of changes in the modern world, determined by social mobility and multiculturalism. The article presents then some chosen aspects of social integration of migrants seen as bilateral process which requires the development of intercultural competences of both migrants’ and the receiving community. The author further describes intercultural communication and stresses its importance for education and social development. Finally, some factors conditioning the acquisition of intercultural competence with reference to Gordon Allport’s contact hypothesis and informational influences are presented along with highlighting the importance of empathy.

    Currently we are witnessing migration, which for different reasons exhibits a growth tendency. It does not just concern big cities, but also smaller towns, where we can encounter people with different cultural backgrounds, religion, dialect, and values. Multicultural education comes out to meet the expectations of the minorities and its main purpose is to create a platform for dialog and communication, as well as the composition of educational programs and multicultural upbringing. The article explains the situation of refugees, with emphasis on the education and upbringing of children. It provided examples of multicultural education implemented in a small elementary school from a County of Bielsk.

    In most societies disabled people are subject to taboo, in terms of laughing at their weaknesses, failures, inadequacies and differnt situations connected with their disability. However, they are becoming a more frequent ligtsome topic of different forms in mass culture (from television to the Internet) – interesting especially when they laugh at themselves. The article deals with the situations of laughing at Other in this context together with the examples of films, shows and educational projects.

    Opis:
    The authors of the article evaluate social-communicative problems of the minority group of Roma Gypsies in Poland. The existing low linguistic competence is additionally constrained by the accompanying insufficient communicative competence. The authors emphasize that teaching of a foreign language, in this particular case of the dominant language in the country, is effective only when it is simultaneously enhanced by a corresponding interaction between the two cultures in question. The authors indicate the barriers to cultural integration that hamper the community’s capacity and capability of establishing the relationships between these communities that would be based on partnership and mutual respect: these barriers include the orality and the tabooisation of Romany culture as well as its unfamiliarity to the Poles. This, in turn, generates patterns for statements and utterances in which ceremonial patterns are of secondary importance. It is rather the pragmatic factor that governs a particular linguistic behaviour: the Romany people simply want to understand the message and want to be understood. The article stresses that the present unfortunate social communication can be changed in the future by the implementation of appropriate activities within educational strategies directed towards the target group.

    Autorka analizuje problem komunikacji między społeczeństwem dominującym a mniejszościami narodowymi i etnicznymi. Zwraca uwagę na kategorię swój /obcy regulującą relacje społeczne, ich zakorzenienie kulturowe i genezę polityczną . Ponadto definiuję na potrzeby wystąpienia, w oparciu o własne badania, pojęcie ‘państwo narodowe’. Kulturowe rozumienie inności omawia, przywołując cztery postawy: odrzucenie, nietolerancję, tolerancję i akceptację. Identyfikuje także bariery, utrudniające fortunną komunikację na granicy kultur, mające swą genezę w zmieniającym się układzie geopolitycznym. Stosunek do inności w Polsce ilustruje werbalnymi i niewerbalnymi zachowaniami komunikacyjnymi, poszukuje ich przyczyn w systemach praw-nym i edukacyjnym, które są dziedzictwem PRL-u. W swoich rozważaniach bierze pod uwagę czynniki, wpływające na kształtowanie relacji interkulturowych w Polsce po 1989 roku:– totalitaryzm utrwalony w pamięci społecznej,– zniesienia cenzury,– dynamikę procesów globalizacyjnych,– determinizm technologiczny relacji interpersonalnych i interkulturowych,– przeobrażenia aksjologiczne. Na zakończenie, na podstawie wyników badań, opisuje tendencje w zakresie omawianych relacji. 
    The author analyses a problem of communication between a dominant society and national and ethnic minorities. She focuses on a category of one’s/ other that regulates social relations, their cultural roots and political origin. Additionally, for the purposes of the speech, the author defines ‘a national state’ term based on her own research in the field. Cultural understanding of otherness is explained based on four attitudes: rejection, intolerance, tolerance and acceptance. Barriers that hamper a fortunate communication on the edge of cultures and origin from a changing geopolitical system are identified. The author illustrates the attitude towards other-ness with verbal and nonverbal communicational behaviors, investigates their causes in legal and educational systems which are the heritage of Polish People’s Republic times. She considers the following aspects that have shaped intercultural relations in Poland after 1989:– totalitarianism imprinted in social memory of people,– abolition of censorship,– globalization processes dynamics,– technological determinism of interpersonal and intercultural relations,– axiological changes. Finally, the author describes the tendencies of the above relations based on the results of research.
