Opis:
The purpose of the study is to present the principles of education in the field of book art as part of applied graphics, provided at the Academies of Fine Arts in Krakow and Warsaw. These two academic environments stimulated revival of this type of education. The analysis pertains to 1945–1952 when Poland witnessed crucial political and ideological changes affecting a new character of education. In the study, the process of nationalisation of artistic education is presented. The author shares her assumptions of the new teaching curricula designed in accordance with the ideological needs of the communist authorities. Marxism-Leninism was taught as a foreground subject. Graphic departments were established to educate specialists to be employed by the state propaganda. An attempt has been made to reconstruct the personal composition of the graphic faculties lecturers in both academic centres.

assets and the shortcomings of museum exhibitions
Opis:
In autumn 2019, the Royal Castle in Warsaw saw the exhibition associated with the Year of Rembrandt(Rembrandt-jaar) which celebrated the 350th anniversary of death of the Dutch painter. The publicity and promotion were well conceived and successful. The eloquent banner over the entrance featuring a section of Rembrandt’s portrait and the caption “36 x REMBRANDT” appealed to the imagination. The audience expected to see a substantial number of standalone masterpieces, but it turned out that the advertised pieces are chiefly prints along with two portraits from the permanent display. No efforts were made to have at least two high-quality works by Rembrandt brought from abroad, sourcing them instead from domestic collections only. Still, even those artefacts were not duly displayed to their best effect, which is saddening given the noble venue. The review discusses the assets and the shortcomings of the show, in order to acquaint museum professionals with the expectations of the viewers.

Opis:
W zasobach Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej w Warszawie dotychczas zarejestrowano 3091 woluminów należących do historycznych wielkopolskich bibliotek klasztornych. W artykule omówiono poszczególne etapy napływu fragmentów kolekcji, które zasiliły zbiory biblioteczne warszawskiej książnicy uniwersyteckiej w początkowych latach XIX wieku. Pierwsze z nich pochodziły z biblioteki Liceum Warszawskiego (1806) i tzw. Akt kasacyjny z 1819 roku spowodował napływ znacznych partii księgozbiorów z bibliotek jezuitów i kanoników regularnych laterańskich z Kalisza, cystersów z Lądu, kamedułów z Bieniszewa oraz paulinów z Brdowa i Wielgomłynów.
The University Library in Warsaw houses 3,091 volumes in its collection that originally belonged to a number of monastic libraries located in Greater Poland. This article traces and identifies the successive stages in which individual sections of these collections come into possession of the Library in the early years of the nineteenth century. The first batch of books came from the library of the Warsaw Lyceum (Polish: Liceum Warszawskie) (1806) and the so-called the Library of the Appellate Court (1810). An analysis of the proprietary marks and records (book-plates, stamps, marks of ownership and inventory numbers) pasted into the surviving copies allows us to establish that the latter libraries held volumes that had previously belonged to Cistercian monasteries in Bledzew, Obra, Paradyż and Wągrowiec, and to the Benedictines from Lubiń and the monks of the Trinitarian Order in Krotoszyn. The Dissolution Act of 1819 was followed by an influx of large sections of the book collections from the libraries of the Jesuit and Canons Regular of the Lateran from Kalisz, the Cistercians from Ląd, the Camaldolese monks from Bieniszewo and the Pauline monasteries at Brdów and Wielgomłyny. Over time, the Warsaw library also accommodated volumes from the libraries of the Jesuits and the Discalded Carmelites in Poznań. The books from the latter two batches were incorporated to the Library’s book collection either alongside early books from other book collections, or in some other way yet to be researched, following a procedure that has not yet been clearly established. The article also includes an overview of the bookplates and other proprietary marks that make identification of the copies from the above mentioned libraries possible, i.e. library stamps, monastic inscriptions, labels with library shelf numbers and characteristic markings placed on book spines.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the history of artistic educational system in Warsaw in the inter-war period. The author analyses the methods of teaching the students of applied arts how to insert graphic elements in books. The following institutions are taken into account: Miejska Szkoła Sztuk Zdobniczych i Malarstwa, Warszawska Szkoła Sztuk Pięknych, Doświadczalna Pracownia Graficzna operating in Salezjańska Szkoła Rzemiosł, Szkoła Przemysłu Drukarskiego and the W. Gerson Szkoła Sztuk Pięknych. The abovementioned public and private artistic schools followed varied educational programmes – from a three-year vocational school specializing in arts to an academic level. The educational concepts were connected with the recognition of an important role of applied arts in social life, also in the aspect of visual culture. A well-developed artistic educational system made Warsaw an important printing centre.

Opis:
Two Polish historical films set in 19th-century cities were created. The paper analyzes film images of Warsaw, Paris and Vienna. For the needs of Warszawska premiera [Warsaw Première] and especially Młodość Chopina [Youth of Chopin] impressive sets of 19th-century cities were built in an atelier in Łódź. The author presents the main architectural principles behind these visions and points to the problems faced by the artists who wanted to create a credible and convincing illusion of the past. The films of socialist realism are today a peculiar souvenir of the Stalinist culture with its brazen propaganda message. It is, however, worth noting that the staging and decorations in the films depicting the past were created with great historical accuracy and some of the solutions applied during the production of Warsaw Première and Youth of Chopin were a great hint for later films of a similar character.

Opis:
The origins of particular documentary films are sometimes difficult to determine, precisely locate and capture in time and space. It is like searching for the source of a river. What marked the beginning of Intensity of Looking, a film about the great documentary film director Kazimierz Karabasz? The beginning of a documentary film’s creation determines the artistic process and elements that shape its strength, energy and main thought. These elements, which sometimes verge on intuition, guide this process, shaping the subject of the film, as well as its meaning, climate and aura. There is a thread connecting the author and the protagonist of the film, something that binds them together during work on the film, and sometimes lasts much longer. The three variants of what initiates the process of making a particular documentary film are as follows. The first is an encounter with a person who could be a character in a documentary film. The second is a thought, idea or problem that a filmmaker wants to address and discuss in a documentary by means of a certain character and story. The third is a return to a character who had been portrayed in a previous documentary film, to tell more about him or her. All three of these variants were the case in the making of Andrzej Sapija’s Intensity of Looking.

Ignacy Raczyński, the bishop of Poznań from 1794 to 1807 and then the archbishop of Gniezno, ruled the Poznań diocese in a complicated political situation that followed the loss of independence by Poland. The Poznań period of his life and activity has so far been hardly investigated. The author carries out a brief characterization of his rule in this period and publishes six of his letters to Jan Chrzciciel Albertandi, his official for the archdiaconate of Warsaw, formerly the Mazovia part of the Poznań diocese. The letters reveal a number of hitherto unknown details of the relations between the Church and the state in those times. The text also includes the pastoral letter of bishop Raczyński of 1796 to the clergy and faithful of the Poznań   diocese.

Between 2013 and 2016 the Department of the History of Education at the Faculty of Education (University of Warsaw) carried out research on the pedagological thought of the 19th and 20th centuries. It was mainly centered on the pedagological legacy of Aniela Szycówna (1869–1921), Iza Moszczeńska (1864–1941), Jan Hulewicz (1907–1980), Anna Mońka-Stanikowa (1917–2007) and Anna Radziwiłł (1939–2009). It is worthwhile to start investigating other personas that shaped the Polish education, as well as the legacy of other pedagogues who addressed educational problems in their research. Without doubt, such studies require investigating sources. Information can be found, for example, in articles published in educational journals, such as Przegląd Pedagogiczny, Kwartalnik Pedagogiczny (published at the beginning of the 20th c.), along with more recent periodicals focused on education and its history.
