The article is devoted to an attempt to present a biographical approach in pedagogical research, taking into account not only exploratory but also therapeutic functions of narrative interviews. The reflections focus of looking for the answer to the question: whether and to what extent telling a story of one’s life (especially marked by traumatic experiences) may contribute to integrating the past and the present, increasing self-awareness, and thus (re-)constructing the narrator’s identity? I ask a question about the conditions to be met in order for the narrator to realize the limitations posed by the past and next to overcome the crisis by pointing out the main motives of action, epiphanies, crises, or breakthrough moments.

In discussions of cross-linguistic influence (also known as language transfer), the focus is usually on the influence of a particular structure in a particular instance of language contact, for instance, the negative transfer of serial verbs by Vietnamese learners of English: She has managed to rise the kite fly over the tallest building (Helms-Park, 2003). Even so, as Helms-Park acknowledges, serial verb constructions can and do surface in contact situations besides the one she studied in Canada, and they can involve speakers of different languages. While serial verb constructions have unique syntactic traits, the same point about the transferability of multiword constructions in different contact settings is applicable in other instances and with collocations that can be viewed as unique in their lexical as well as syntactic characteristics. The following article considers such a case, based in part on my own teaching experience but also on transfer research from other settings as well. After a discussion of a collocation that I call the repeated other pattern found in different settings, I briefly consider other cases of transfer having lexical and syntactic peculiarities and appearing in more than one contact situation. There will also be some discussion of factors that transfer researchers and language teachers would do well to consider.

The purpose of this text is to reflect on the process of building individual identity in the culture of education. The adopted perspective is based primarily on the concepts of culture and the place of the subject in it, derived from the thought of Richard Rorty and Harold Bloom. This perspective affords a look at the process of building an individual in a mature way, devoid of naivety but also revealing the hardships and aporias accompanying this process. Education can be the primary way through which man tries to get along with the world. The condition for the fortunate effect of these struggles is building a culture that is democratic, or in Rorty’s words poetic.

The subject of the article is an analysis of the lyrics of 13 Polish songs sung in the village of Muravanaya Ashmyanka. A linguistic analysis of the transcribed lyrics of the songs based on the author’s personal recordings, conducted according to dialectological publications, and carried out on the phonetic, morphological, syntactic, and lexical levels, revealed numerous clear influences of the East Slavic languages. Among the many deviations from the general Polish language, and the multitude of dialectal features characteristic of the Northern Borderlands dialect, the following may be concluded: asynchronous pronunciation of nasal vowels at the final position and before fricative consonants, vowel reduction, the pronunciation of the dental consonant ł, the occurrence of the prepositional construction instead of the general Polish synthetic one, preservation of the voiced quality of the consonant w after voiceless consonants, soft pronunciation of l, change of grammatical gender, voiced pronunciation of the consonanth. The lyrics of the collected and transcribed songs are an example of valuable linguistic material fading into oblivion with the passage of time.

The main aim of this article is to present the methods in which Slovenian myths of Romantic provenience, present in France Prešeren’s poetry, are deconstructed since the fifties of nineteenth century. Prešeren (1800−1849) is regarded as the national poet, who enabled the Slovenian community and competed with the canon of European literature. Parallelly to the process of his canonization occurred the reverse of it, The Anxiety of Influence, described by Harold Bloom. Poets Simon Jenko (1835−1869) and Oton Župančič (1878−1949) had been deconstructing the myths of Romantic love, mythical conception of poetry, poets and nation in the period of realism and modernism, as well as the poet Veno Taufer in the period of neo-avantgarde (1933−). The intertextual analysis of their poems shows several ways of contesting the influence of the main topics and aesthetic codes from Prešeren’s poetry, determined by the role of poetry in Slovenian culture, described in the late sixties of twentieth century as Prešeren structure.

Wskazując na północne peryferia kontynentu, Lisi stara się ukazać, w jaki sposób sformułowana w obrębie filozofii Sørena Kierkegaarda estetyka zależności (the aesthetics of dependency), gównie za sprawą recepcji dramatów Henrika Ibsena, rozprzestrzeniła się w literaturze Zachodu, wpływając na sposób pojmowania sztuki, człowieka i jego miejsca w świecie w dziełach twórców takich jak Henry James, Hugo von Hofmannsthal czy Reiner Maria Rilke.
The topic of this review, Leonard F. Lisi’s book Marginal Modernity. The Aesthetics of Dependency from Kierkegaard to Joyce, is an ambitious attempt to reconstruct the cartography practiced by scholars of European modernism. Examining the northern periphery of the continent, Lisi tries to show how an aesthetics of dependency, formulated within the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard, was disseminated in Western literature, chiefly through the reception of Henrik Ibsen’s plays, influencing the perception of art, humanity, and our place in the world in the works of such artists as Henry James, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Rainer Maria Rilke.

Whereas Standard Dutch only distinguishes between two adnominal grammatical genders, substandard varieties of Belgian Dutch distinguish between three such genders. German, too, distinguishes between three genders. Nevertheless, when assigning gender to German nouns with Dutch cognates, speakers of Belgian Dutch are strongly influenced by Standard Dutch gender but to a much lesser degree (if at all) by substandard gender. On the hypothesis that a lack of metalinguistic knowledge about L1 substandard gender decreases its use as a source for transfer, I experimentally manipulated the metalinguistic knowledge about L1 substandard gender of 45 speakers of substandard Belgian Dutch varieties. I then assessed how strongly this manipulation affected the participants’ reliance on substandard gender distinctions when they assigned gender to L2 German nouns with Dutch cognates. Results confirm the strong influence of Standard Dutch, hint at a weak influence of substandard Dutch, and show no appreciable effect of the experimental manipulation.

The article analyses the originality of the narrative manner of the contemporary writer Yaroslav Shipov, in whose texts the ideals and spiritual challenge of the heroes and storyteller are always accompanied by a dense network of humor and common nonsense. Conclusions are drawn regarding the reasons for such a strategy. The prose by Shipov, though aimed at finding God’s presence in the world, is stylistically and problematically associated with secular and social literature. It motivates the reader to do self-meditation and intellectual work based on the influence of suggestion.

The paper ostensibly refers to Harold Bloom’s categories of the anxiety of influence. Bloom’s theory is treated as an immanentist one, i.e. text/aesthetics/personality-oriented, which is specific to the period in which the theory was developed. However, at least from the 80s of the XXth century, there occurs a visible change towards sociologization of all the human sciences. The paper appropriates and resignificates Bloom’s categories and intermingles them with the concepts of social psychology in order to enable a description of the condition of writers in the current social context

The present article is a contribution to the study of the history of Polish-Russian linguistic contacts and focuses on the phenomenon of Russianisms (Russian expressions) in the Polish language, in particular on the phenomenon of lingering Russianisms in the Polish language during the inter-war period (1918–1939). The issue has not been sufficiently and thoroughly scholarly addressed so far. The article discusses the lexical borrowings from Russian that were used in the Polish language used in “Tygodnik Ilustrowany”. This weekly publication was published in Warsaw throughout the whole of the inter-war period in Poland. The analysis covers relevant vocabulary excerpted from five annual volumes of the periodical, i.e. from the years 1926–1930. The author attempts to prove and illustrate to what degree the influence of the Russian language was manifested in the lexis used by editors and journalists of the weekly, what elements of this influence remained between 1918–1939 after the long period of partition and the immense influence of Russian upon the Polish language. Additionally, the author examines whether the Russian influences gained support in the Polish language of former inhabitants of the Eastern Polish borderlands who later settled in free Warsaw or in the language of those of its inhabitants who spent part of their lives in Russia.

Artykuł poświęcony jest funkcjonowaniu i pragmatyce haseł w ukraińskiej prasie radzieckiej. Wyróżniono najczęstsze grupy haseł ze względu na ich cel illokucyjny: konstatywne, dyrektywne, komisywne. Zaproponowano nowy rodzaj haseł — slogany gloryfikacyjne, których celem było wyrażenie przychylności przedstawicieli władzy i gloryfikacja. Okazało się, że bardzo duże spektrum sloganów  adresowanych do różnych grup odbiorców stanowi ważną rolę hasła jako przejawu języka władzy.
The article is devoted to functioning and pragmatic load of the slogans in the Soviet Ukrainian press. The most widespread groups of slogans for their illocutive purpose are constatives, directives, commisives. The author proposed a new kind of slogans — glorivicatives, the purpose of which was the expression of favour of the authorities and glorifi cation. It has been defi ned that a very large spectrum of the multidirected slogans addressed to different groups of recipients enhanced the role of the slogans as manifestations of the language of power.

У статті аналізується проблема російської інформаційної агресії у війні проти України, наводяться приклади поширення неправдивої інформації. Увага зосереджена також на структурі фейкових новин та основних напрямах дезінформаційних повідомлень. Проаналізовано методи, які використовуються для поширення фейкових новин, та їхній вплив на аудиторію.
The present article analyzes the problem of Russian information aggression in the war against Ukraine, gives examples of dissemination of false information. Attention is also focused on the structure of fake news and the main currents of disinformation messages. The methods used to disseminate fake news and their impact on audiences are also analyzed.

The present article presents an analysis of a Lutsk Karaim literary work, namely Sergiusz Rudkowski’s Dostłar, which was published in two parts in 1931 and 1939. The two characters of the drama use colloquial language and therefore the work appears to be until now the only source of knowledge on Lutsk Karaim in its spoken form. The linguistic peculiarities of the drama are compared with other non-literary sources that reflect everyday language used at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The present study has been carried out in order to determine whether the language of the drama was caricatured by the author, and thus exaggerated to some extent, or whether it reflects the factual command of Karaim during that period. In the final analysis, it is safe to say that the drama’s language should be treated as a reliable source of knowledge. It is important to note that it contains linguistic elements (swearwords, abusive words, Hebrew elements, &c.) that are absent from all other colloquial linguistic materials.

The article is an attempt at reconstructing the remarks by Paweł Hertz (essayist, poet, translator, writer and publisher) on Italy and its artistic legacy. A short presentation of the writer is followed by a discussion of his actual journeys in Italy based on the available autobiographical material. Next,there are reflections on Hertz’s interest in Italian literature and European texts about Italy (based on essays and editorial work). Treated as a separate issue is the view of Italian art through the prism of Polish artistic work (the spheres of associations, interference and references) in Hertz’s journalism. Other issues discussed in the article cover poems about Italy, their placeamong the writer’s works and the main threads and motifs. The article’s final notes focus on the observations on the value of Polish reception of Italian cultural legacy and its basic aspects that Hertz regularly emphasised at various stages of his creative life.
