The main considerations related to the subject matter of the article were preceded by a comprehensive introduction, in which the figure of Jakub from Paradyż, who is the greatest thinkers, not only Polish, but European of his time, was presented. He was a scholar who had a significant influence on the development of science in the Middle Ages. Because of its timelessness, it’s thought can still be a model for future generations. Jakub from Paradyż devoted his life to science. He perceived the value of these teachings that teach proper life and directed his writings to a wide range of recipients. The intellectual values that characterized this outstanding philosopher were recorded in about 150 treaties, sermons and lectures. Some of his views are presented in the article below, presenting theses taken from the title treaty.

The article aims to present the linguistic means (stylistic methods and vocabulary) used by Henryk Sienkiewicz to create the image of European and American cities in his Listy z podróży do Ameryki. The author of the article also analyses the descriptions of experiencing large and modern cities, proving that the images of European and Americancities perceived and described from a European’s perspective were contrasted. It is the consequence of perceiving European agglomerations as cultural and historic centres cultivating traditional values in contrast to the mainly industrial American cities serving as trading centres full of action and fast-paced life. The choice of linguistic means used to describe urban buildings was determined by the viewpoint of the perceiving subject and the perspective from which the act of perceiving was accomplished.

The article sums up the anti-gender campaign of 2013–2014 launched in Poland by the Catholic Church and right-wing politicians. The situation is presented with reference to the Croatian „Witches from Rio” case of 1992–1993 in order to demonstrate similarities of the two backlash discourses, both in the choice of rhetorics and topics (e.g. international conspiracy, deviated sexuality, national treason, violation of the natural social order). Finally, the author attempts to diagnose the impact that the campaign has had so far on various gender-focused projects (both in research and teaching) conducted in and outside academia in Poland.

In his comic Greetings from Serbia. A Journal in Comics Written During the Conflict in Serbia, Aleksander Zograf’s choice of form is associated with the periodical form of the diary in drawings kept by the author. By means of a series of episodes, Zograf shows selected fragments of daily life in Serbia: the realities of living in a country under sanctions, being bombed by NATO aircraft, and struggling with post-war chaos.A characteristic feature of the anthology Greetings from Serbia. A Journal in Comics Written During the Conflict in Serbia is – in the words of the author – “observation through fragments”. The poetics of the fragment, the autonomization of the individual elements that comprise the open composition, and the breaking up of the plot’s cohesion are all associated with the worldview that emerges from Zograf’s comics. The reality observed turns out to be chaotic, incoherent and irrational. It becomes impossible to fully embrace or provide any overarching sense to the events, and thus fictionalize and express them by means of a traditional narrative form. By choosing the form of the comic book, and abandoning a comprehensive, ordered point of view, the author attempts to describe the whole by means of fragments.

The paper focuses on the significant role of wolf in the Croatian folklore that has been confirmed by a series of analyses over the thirty contemporary original field records. The socalled wolf processions were still performed in many places of the country just before the Homeland War in 1991. Often described in a word vukavarski, the processions were always initiated by an act of killing the wolf since the animal was traditionally assumed as a symbol of evil and subsequently as a cause of severe damage. In order to celebrate such an act, the wolf killer, accompanied by a small group of hunters, had to march through the village. The group was obliged to sing  or recite spells, derived from an apotropaic rite, in front of the country houses. As for the hosts, they were satisfied to receive the procession (such a satisfaction was usually expressed by different rewards) since all the neighborhood had got rid off another dangerous animal.

The aim of the article is to discuss the issues related to identifying the etymology of Polish surnames derived from appellatives. It also proposes a study containing a more thorough explication of the motivation behind the effects of word-formation that have been used as surnames. It is argued that the use of appropriate methods for analysing personal proper names may significantly contribute to revealing the pragmatic aspects of personal names created in the past. The first part of the text presents the ways of describing the origin of the discussed names in the largest Polish dictionaries of anthroponyms. Its second part is devoted to the presentation of old nicknames (currently functioning as surnames) as messages of everyday communication and elements of the vernacular. This part justifies the idea of compiling a dictionary of Polish surnames based on appellatives which would make use of the tools of ethnolinguistic methodology, especially Ryszard Tokarski’s open definition. The last part of the text presents a proposal for a dictionary entry on the example of surnames derived from the appellative bystry [PL smart].

This article discusses ways to create and use colour names in Polish contemporary women’s magazines. Among these processes we can mention: enrichment of the texts in the press with original non-basic colour names, creating adjectives from nouns whose referents are characterized by a particular colour and the creation of derivatives that are nouns from adjectives. Additionally, attention is also drawn to the persuasive elements such as personification, the terms associated with synesthesia and the process of borrowing names from English. These colour names can be classified into thematic fields related to fashionable clothing, beauty and everyday life, although the extensions of thematic designates, from which the names of colours were created, are much wider.

Opis:
A radical reconstruction of the exposition layout at the Museum of the City of Warsaw, connected with the general reconstruction of the facilities and retirement of its longtime director, Janusz Durko (1951-2003), resulted in 2017 in opening a new permanent exposition called Things from Warsaw. The exposition consists of 21 cabinets containing 8 000 items selected out of 300 000 included in the museum holdings (e. g., Cabinet of Warsaw Monuments, Cabinet of Warsaw Silver and Plate Tableware, Cabinet of the Warsaw Sirens, Cabinet of Postcards, Cabinet of Souvenirs, Cabinet of Shrines). The main criterion was the materiality and authenticity of particular items, which resulted in the absence of multimedia presentations and suggested “appropriate” narratives. The main curator of the exposition is Jarosław Trybuś, art historian and curator rewarded with the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2008. His team followed an idea of Bjørnar Olsen that due to various conceptualizations the material world studied by the humanities has been so dematerialized that we can hardly believe our eyes. Thus the features of the exposition – sincerity, seriousness, and modesty – suggest a new approach to the city’s history through experiencing the reality of things treated not so much as “witnesses,” but rather as “actors” of the past events. This turn to materiality stems from the hope to come close to the things without the mediation of words imposing predictable interpretations in advance. In other words, the exposition is a kind of lesson in openness, multidirectional reading, and the de-ideologization of history. The Things from Warsawexhibition has been analyzed in reference to three criteria: openness to the “other,” creating a vision of the future, and the inspiring power of imagination.

Opis:
The cult of Triglav in the Polabian-Pomeranian territory in the 12th century confirms an evolution of the religious system of the local Slavic communities towards monolatry, largely affected by confrontation as well as a cultural dialogue with the Christian culture. At first, at the time of the Pomeranian missions of Saint Otto of Bamberg in the 1120s, attempts at suppressing the cult did not bring about long-term effects. However, a wave of the so-called pagan reaction led to some sort of a compromise made in Szczecin, leading to official coexistence of the cult of Triglav and the newly introduced cult of Jesus Christ. From the point of view of mythology, the competences of the two divine figures turn out to be convergent and universal, yet still, as part of the Szczecin “religious dualism”, no attempt was made to identify them (following the rule of interpretatio Slavica of the elements of Christianity). The belief in the autonomy of Triglav and Christ (“A German God”) was confirmed in Szczecin in the course of Otto’s evangelization which resulted in a Christian community in the city. The phenomenon of syncretism, present there until Otto’s second mission (1128), was therefore an attempt at maintaining unity in a religiously divided society following the first mission of the Apostle of Pomeranians (1124-1125).

Dorota Masłowska’s Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną employs various types of linguistic innovations. One of them is a mistaken selection of the number of nouns. This stylistic means results in linguistic humour. In the Russian translation of the novel reflecting this phenomenon should not pose any problems. However, neither of the instances of the stylistic means analysed in the paper was reflected in the Russian target text. It is difficult to determine why the translator did not attempt to show Russian readers a reconstruction of the language of the Polish text. As a result, Irina Lappo’s translation lacks the poetic qualities and refreshing touches of Masłowska’s language.
