    A certain percentage of disabled children are not raised in their biological families. It happens more and more often that the place of residence of such a child is not an institution but the adoptive or foster family. Increased prevalence of this type of families makes the study of this area of functioning of children with disabilities more and more important. The paper covers the issue of dealing with a child’s difference by their adoptive/foster parents. The difference has its source e. g. in a disability. The empirical part of the article is the result of qualitative research conducted with parents from 20 adoptive/foster families that raise a child with a disability (this is a part of a broader research project conducted by the authors with these families). The analysis of the interviews shows the ways to discover the otherness, the difference of the child, the ways to accept this otherness, and the importance they ascribe to the otherness of the child.

    The article “Foster care system in Great Britain and Polish foster families” is devoted to the British system of foster care, which allows to create a foster family by Polish citizens. The article discusses the main principles on which the foster care and its forms are based. National standards and requirements for candidates to foster families were presented as well as issues related to the implementation of foster care, including these regarding support for foster parents and housing or financial requirements.

    The study was aimed to determine the role of attachment bond in emotional functioning in alexithy-mia and emotional processing in foster care alumni. The participants with experience of personal rejection – adult foster care alumni during the transition from foster care to adulthood (N = 29) and persons without such experience (N = 32) took part in the study. The Experiences in Close Relation-ships Scale, Toronto Alexithymia Scale and Emotional Processing Scale were used. Results present that insecure pattern of attachment occurs with alexithymia in ineffective emotional processing. We confront the results with the construct of emotion representations as the key to comprehend observed deficits in emotional functioning.

    Niniejszy artykuł powstał w celu prezentacji teoretycznych i metodycznych filarów działalności społecznej prowadzonej w środowisku rodzicielstwa zastępczego. W toku analizy wykorzystano metodę deskresearch. Badania obejmowały źródła regulacji prawnej, wyniki zrealizowanych eksploracji terenowych (własnych i obcych) oraz wybraną literaturę przedmiotu. W świetle przeprowadzonych badań można stwierdzić, że kategoria towarzyszenia wymaga dalszego namysłu oraz naukowych badań ukierunkowanych na sferę działalności wspomagającej rodziny zastępcze w ich codziennej służbie.
    This article has been prepared in order to present the theoretical and methodological foundations of social activity conducted in the foster parenthood environment. In the course of the under taken analyses, the deskresearch method was used. The research covered sources of legal regulation, the results of previous field explorations (own and foreign), as well as specialist literature on the subject. On the basis of the conducted research, it can be assumed that the category of accompaniment requires further reflection and scientific research aimed at the sphere of activity supporting foster families in their daily service.

    Artykuł dotyczy ewolucji pieczy zastępczej, w tym zwłaszcza prawnego jej aspektu. Autor wskazuje na ideę ochrony praw człowieka i zasadę pomocniczości jako filozoficzny fundament jej funkcjonowania. Piecza zastępcza może mieć formę rodzinną (rodziny zastępcze i rodzinne domy dziecka) oraz instytucjonalną (różnego typu placówki instytucjonalne). Prawo preferuje formy rodzinne, jednak autor podkreśla, że najlepszą formą jest ta, która w konkretnej sytuacji daje największe szanse powrotu dziecka do rodziny. Uchwalona 9 czerwca 2011 r. Ustawa o wspieraniu rodziny i systemie pieczy zastępczej jest dowodem na kontynuację funkcjonowania pieczy zastępczej jako przede wszystkim formy wspierania rodziny.
    The article deals with the evolution of foster care, especially its legal aspect. The author refers to the idea of protection of human rights and the principle of subsidiarity as philosophical grounds for the functioning of this institution. Foster care can assume either the form of kinship placement (foster families, family-type children’s home) or an institutional form (various types of institutional establishments). The law prefers kinship placement, but the author emphasizes that in fact the best form of foster care is the one which in a specific situation offers the greatest chance of the child’s return to its family. The Act on Supporting the Family and the System of Foster Care passed on 9th June 2011 is evidence of the functioning of foster care first and foremost as a form of supporting the family.
