    The aim of the article is to show the influence of Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy on literature. The category of borderland is primarily of cultural and symbolic significance. Wojciech Karpiński shows the way of Friedrich Nietzsche’s thought in discovering his eidos. The German philosopher lived a life between good and evil, joy and suffering, falling and rising upwards, and writers were inspired by this attitude.

    Artykuł ma na celu ukazanie zbieżności poglądów dwóch przedstawicieli modernizmu, Thomasa S. Eliota i Konstandinosa P. Kawafisa. Studium porównawcze poprzedza krótka charakterystyka epoki, pozwalająca wysunąć tezę badawczą: Kawafis mógł wyprzedzić o kilkanaście lat postulaty literackie Eliota. Tekst skupia się na podobieństwie postaw literackich obu autorów, dlatego podstawę analiz stanowi wybrana twórczość eseistyczno-krytyczna Eliota oraz Kanon i pisma teoretyczne Kawafisa. Tekst koncentruje się na następujących aspektach: zestawienie świata przedstawionego Kawafisa z klasycystycznymi poglądami Eliota, omówienie głębszej warstwy założeń literackich obu autorów (porównanie Ars Poetica Kawafisa z Theory of Impersonal Poetry Eliota), spojrzenie na styl Aleksandryjczyka przez pryzmat sądów estetycznych Eliota oraz kwestie związane z procesem twórczym i cechami artysty (dojrzałość i miejsce poety w spektrum homo vates – homo faber).
    The purpose of this article is to present concurrences in the poetic conceptions of two modernist poets, Thomas Stearns Eliot and Constantine Petru Cavafy. Thecomparative study is preceded by the brief characteristic of modernism which results in formulation of the following research thesis: Cavafy’s work seems to predate Eliot’s literary postulates by several years. As the article focuses on similarities in stances of the two authors, the base of the research material consists of selected critical essays by Eliot as well as Canon and theoretical work of Cavafy, known as Ars Poetica. The following issues are featured: analogies between Cavafy’s poetry and classicist ideas of Eliot; elaboration on literary premises of the two authors (comparison of Cavafy’s Ars Poetica and Eliot’s Theory of Impersonal Poetry); reading Cavafy’s poems through the perspective of Eliot’s aesthetics, work process and characteristic traits of the writer.

    Opis:
    The article discusses new and republished translations of Susan Sontag’s work, recently launched by the Karakter publishing house: Regarding the Pan of Others, On Photography, and Against Interpretation and Other Essays. The article focuses on the elements of Sontag’s thought that make her a forgotten mother of feminist and gender theoreticians, as well as such influential critics as Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes. The article points out to continuations of Sontag’s thought in contemporary theoretical and social projects, and to the pertinence of her critical observations on theories based on metaphysics of presence: psychoanalysis, Marxism, or hermeneutics. The article also touches upon history of war photography and related war journalism, and upon the ambivalent quality of imaging of the misery of war. It also present historical and cultural circumstances of the development of Sontag’s thought in the intellectual milieu of New York in the 1960s. The discussion recapitulates the main statements of Sontag’s essays, relating them to a wider theoretical context, which is aimed at a reappraisal of the forgotten intelectual in the history of literature.
