Opis:
Emotion may be treated as a special sort of message considering that communicative function is one of the basic functions of emotion. Moreover emotion serves as a message in two ways. In one way facial expression of emotion is a message to other participants of social interaction that contains information about the emotional state of the subject and thus plays important interpersonal role. It shows the subject’s personal attitude and amplifies verbal messages or makes them more credible. Numerous empirical studies show that processes of generating and perceiving of facial expressions of emotions are autonomic and specific. In the other way emotion is an internal message containing information about the significance of events or thoughts and thus helping in making choices or taking decissions.

Opis:
The linguistic ways of presenting emotions such as communicating and expressing emotions in Polish medieval texts have not been the subject of linguistic analysis. The majority of the oldest linguistic relics are mostly the texts published both in transliterated and transcribed versions and may constitute a basis for large-scale research of vocabulary. Słownik staropolski 1953–2002 (The Dictionary of Old Polish 1953–2002) and resulting The Conceptual Dictionary of Old Polish are a valuable help in the analysis of presenting emotions in medieval texts. The article presents the categories of concepts in The Conceptual Dictionary of Old Polish that concern emotions. The autosemantic continuous and discontinuous units are assigned to 26 conceptual categories concerning emotions. The contents of the category shame from The Conceptual Dictionary of Old Polish are described in order to show the way of presenting data. The general principles of the comprehensive study on communicating and expressing emotions in Polish medieval texts have been formulated.

The subjects were 134 final-year students of Warsaw Medical University, 1st Faculty of Medicine. The purpose of the study was to measure the dominant coping strategy, moderated by positive and negative emotions, which can be important in management. The variance analysis showed that activation of negative emotions resulted in a significant rise in emotion-oriented and avoidance-oriented coping. At the same time, the level of a task-oriented strategy decreased significantly, which seems to be very important in healthcare management.

Text, showing the most important ways in the 20th century to think about poetry, refers to modernist epiphany (Ryszard Nycz). On the example of Małgorzata Hillar’s poetry, the author shows the inadequacy of this concept. It focused on the linguistic aspect of transmitting emotions, bypassing their bodily sensations. The recent studies on the relationship between emotions and language also allow to present a relationship with language and poetry. Recent studies on the relationship between emotions and language also allow us to otherwise present the relationship between language and poetry.

A translator, recreating the original, creatively stimulates her/his intellect, knowledge, senses and emotions. At the same time, s/he remains in agreement with the emotions presented in the original by assuming with respect to it the only ethically possible attitude, namely empathy. The presence of her/his own emotions in translation, such as sympathy or antipathy, is ethically unacceptable. Emotions occupy an important place in translation because of the difficulty regarding their linguistic transfer, interpretation of their function in the original, intercultural communication differences, and because of the attitude of the translator towards the original. Problems related to emotions concern the art of translation and the need for emotional detachment of the translator, who at the same time needs to maintain an empathic attitude towards the original. Emotions should be considered both on the internal level of the text (the original and the translation) and on the external one – the translator’s perspective.

Research into the emotional experiences of language learners and their impact upon the language-learning process remains relatively undernourished within second language education. The research available focuses primarily on emotions experienced within the classroom, rather than in the daily lives of learners within various social contexts. This article contends that the focus placed upon emotions within the relatively structured environment of the formal classroom is problematic, particularly within an ESL environment, as the target language is more frequently experienced beyond the classroom. Drawing on data collected within Australia, the study explored the emotional experiences of a small cohort of eight university-level ESL learners experienced within their various social interactions beyond the classroom with a specific focus on the emotions of hope, enjoyment and frustration. Semi-structured interviews revealed that their emotional experiences beyond the classroom were particularly intense in comparison to emotional experiences within the formal language-learning classroom.

What does being moral mean? On one hand people may justify mercy killing as sparing omeone’s suffering, but on the other hand they are still, in-fact, taking another’s life. According to Lind’s theory of moral competence (2008), it is based on consistent utilization of moral principles. Although common sense tells us that people’s affective states and levels of empathy may explain the differences, there is little direct evidence. The purpose of this study was to fill this gap by examining the relative contribution of empathy and affective state to moral competence. Results of the study revealed that although perspective taking and negative affective state were both significant predictors of moral competence, perspective taking was a stronger contributor. This suggests that the next time you deliberate over a moral dilemma (e.g., euthanasia), you should try understanding another person’s perspective rather than feeling empathy to make the best moral judgment.

Opis:
Emotional education in Poland is superficial, accidental and at times intuitive. Lack of emotional education classes and the governments’ low support of teachers have a negative effect on the treatment of emotional education as important in the development of a child in an early school age. Teachers, by trial and error, try to solve problems on the basis of their effect rather than cause, which often lies in the student’s emotions. Separating emotions from “rational” thinking is a pedagogical mistake. An adult’s awareness of the cognitive nature of emotion can affect not only the leveling up of emotional disorders, but also has impact on the child’s overall cognitive development. By using the most natural activities of music and movement, the student develops his emotionality with the verbalization of emotional experience. Awareness of the emotions experiences as well as their correct naming is the key to the success of emotional education for students.

Opis:
This article addresses means of expressing and implying emotions (Langlotz, Locher 2012) in realizations of impoliteness in written discourse thematizing language and identity in Croatian and Montenegrin media in 2010 and 2011. Realizations of impoliteness often relate to communicating an emotional stance that can trigger emotional responses in readers. Our discourse sample can be described as “disputes about language and identity” (cf. Felberg, Šarić 2013), which is largely characterized by conflictual disagreements. Conflictual disagreements, as Jones (2001) or Langlotz and Locher (2012) put it, do not leave one cold in face-to-face interaction: they arouse feelings of annoyance, irritation, anger, or contempt directed to the communicative partner. These observations are relevant in our context, although we deal with written discourse. The main participants in our data include well-known intellectuals, journalists, and editors. They all defend or attaca a position in discussing, among other things, “how similar ‘our’ language (Croatian/Montenegrin) is to ‘their’ language” (Serbian), and “what makes this language (Croatian/Montenegrin) a distinctive and independent entity”. These participants clearly position themselves in relation to other participants. Their positioning of the self and the other person involves negative identity-ascribing practices. Taking into consideration parameters such as the role of participants in discourse and society, context, co-text, and activity types in which discourse participants engaged, we identified various highly context-dependent types and functions of impoliteness realizations (cf. Šarić, Felberg 2015). Contrary to our expectations, the participants in the media discourse in both countries frequently use impoliteness both strategically and systematically while defending their positions. The impoliteness realizations point to emotively significant places in discourse. Their use has several functions: a prominent one is coercion through legitimizing one’s own standpoints and delegitimizing those of one’s opponents.

Opis:
Individual differences researchers have recently begun to investigate the concept of emotions and their role in language learning (MacIntyre, Gregersen, & Mercer, 2016). Our aim is to report on a project exploring English majors’ feelings related to their use of foreign languages. Using a qualitative research design, participants were asked to write a paragraph in their mother tongue (Hungarian) describing their emotional experiences in connection with foreign languages and one of the four language skills. Our database comprised altogether 166 paragraphs from 31 male and 135 female students, with 43 texts on listening, 35 on speaking, 47 on reading, and 41 on writing. With the help of content analytical techniques, the texts were divided into thematic units and coded by the two authors. A framework of academically-relevant emotions (Pekrun, 2014) was used to guide our initial coding and the categories were modified where it was felt necessary. Results indicate that the two emotions most frequently experienced by English majors are predominantly related to enjoyment and language anxiety, and these emotions vary not only according to the skill involved but also depending on the context of language use (in class or outside class).
