Opis:
The goal of this article is to determine regularities concerning structural changes in the industrial and service sectors in Poland in the light of trends observable in the development of the world and national economies. The analysis embraces Poland in the years of the socio-economic transformation, but because of access to comparable data it focuses mainly on the years 2000–2014. Use is made of measures commonly applied in economic geography (employment, gross value added) and indicators based on them (mainly the structure and dynamics of change). First, the change in the role of the industrial and service sectors in the Polish economy as compared with other EU states is analysed in the light of the theoretical conceptions presented in the literature. Examined next are changes in the internal structure of the sectors and in the level of their innovativeness. The research showed there to be only slight changes in the role of the two sectors over the study period. Changes in the structure of the industrial sector tend towards its modernisation, which can signal steps taken for re industrialisation.

The project of ecological modernisation – widely integrating all aspects of economic trans- formation – is one of the flagship ideas of incumbent French President François Hollande and the French Socialists. The current energy policy of France, one of the largest global and European energy consumers, is focused on energy efficiency and technological safety standards in the nuclear industry, and to a lesser extent on the development of new green energy technologies. Approaching the German vision of energy transformation, the new French policy has proposed several initiatives for the development of renewable sources. France realised that the development of renewable energy is of strategic importance, not only to meet the energy needs of the country, but also – in the face of the stricter regime of GHG emissions reductions – to provide a competitive advantage for an innovative economy and an opportunity to create many new jobs. Ecological modernisation of the economy is supposed to ensure progress in achieving environmental goals, together with the progress of industrialisation and economic growth (sustainable development).

The text brings attention to the role and significance of examination of rock material in the first stone buildings from the beginning of the Polish state, primarily in Poznań, Ostrów Lednicki, Gniezno, Giecz and Łekno. The most part of the text is devoted to gypsum, which, after a technological processing, was used as mortar. The natural bassets of gypsum and its waterless variety, i.e., anhydrite, can be found in the village of Wapno near Wągrowiec. It was in Wapno where this raw material was exploited and transported to construction sites. Still open remains the question of the way of transportation of this raw material from the village of Wapno to Poznań, Ostrów Lednicki, Gniezno, Giecz and Łekno.

Opis:
Numerous studies on the economies of socialist countries indicate that one of the main sources of their weakness was the attitudes and behavior of “socialist managers”. Contrary to the predictions (e.g. by Joseph Schumpeter), they were not characterized by entrepreneurship, innovation, the ability to lead changes or the ability to formulate strategies. This was due to the nomenclature system existing in all countries of the Soviet bloc. Nominations, promotions, but also dismissals were at the discretion of party bodies. It was the main source of the communist party’s dominance in the country and the fundamental factor guaranteeing control over all spheres of social and economic life. Determining why the nomenclature system turned out to be dysfunctional requires considering three issues: what were the goals of the communist personnel policy, what methods were used to implement it, and finally who were the people appointed to perform managerial functions in the economy. We will focus our analysis on the management of Polish industry in the years 1945–1956. This is because it was the most important sector of the economy of the People’s Republic of Poland, and the personnel policy mechanisms developed at that time remained valid until the end of the “real socialism” system.

Opis:
During the Hallstatt period in Central Europe, profound cultural, economic, and social changes occurred. This is due to the emergence of new technologies ‒ primarily iron metallurgy. Another element is the vicinity of the dominant economic system, i.e., the broadly understood Mediterranean civi-lization, especially the Etruscan cities in Italy. These asymmetrical relationships forced social changes in the areas north of the Alps. An important factor was probably the slave trade, which forced violence and armed struggle. This resulted in a progressive militarization, which is visible through the construction of defensive settlements and the strengthening of farms. The consequence was extreme social stratification and the domination of aristocratic elites. Thus, the stability of such a system depended on the relationship with the dominant partner. In a situation of disruption of relationships, a crisis must have arisen, resulting in the collapse of this culture model.

Opis:
The creative sector is one of the most rapidly growing sectors of the global economy. This sector can also play an important role in providing economic benefits for developing countries. Promoting the creative economy needs a better understanding of the underlying factors that account for its spatial distribution. One of the most important factors that may influence the development of creative industries is tolerance. This paper focuses on the spatial distribution of the creative economy across cities in Indonesia and examines its relationship with tolerance. The main data sources of this paper are the unique data produced by the Central Bureau of Statistics (Badan Pusat Statistik or BPS) and the Indonesian Agency for Creative Economy (Badan Ekonomi Kreatif or BEKRAF), in addition to the City Tolerance Index provided by the SETARA Institute. The study finds that the creative economy in Indonesia does not tend to have a high spatial concentration, indicating that cities in Indonesia have an opportunity to develop the creative economy. The analysis confirms that tolerance matters for the creation of the creative economy in Indonesia. Three components of the City Tolerance Index that influence the creative economy are the Mid-Term Regional Development Plan, discriminatory regional rules and incidents of abuses against the freedom of religion or belief. The size of the population, the Human Development Index, and the status of a city as the provincial capital play a significant role in explaining the distribution of creative economies across the cities in Indonesia.

Data has begun to play a vital role in global, EU-wide and domestic economies. On 19 February 2020, the European Commission published the EU’s strategy for data, which outlines a new and unprecedented approach to development. The vision thus described – a data-driven economy – is to be implemented within the next five years. However, this broad undertaking gives rise to a number of legal, economic and social issues which deserve to be more thoroughly examined. In this paper, the author considers how the data economy relates to aspects of competition law, including threats associated with the sharing of confidential company data, and information protected under intellectual property laws, among the participants of the market economy, i.e. businesses. Also, observations are made concerning the hypothetical emergence of monopolies and oligopolies, as well as collusive agreements between enterprises on the grounds of the new approach to development.

The result of the military, political and economic activity of the Huns in Europe was the depopulation of vast areas, massive ethnic changes, and the destruction of many previous political organisms. The question arises as to why they were so successful. They had knowledge and skills that were alien to the European civilization of that time but perfectly known among the nomadic population of Central Asia and China. Therefore, their activity can be seen as a confrontation of different cultural models. In this sense, it was a clash of civilizations – almost in a sense proposed by S. Huntington.

Opis:
This paper aims to research different strategies for developing the green economy in shrinking cities. Considering urban shrinkage and the green economy as two extended concepts, a French town in post-Fordist transition and a Mexican post-mining town are selected as the most diverse/similar systems to indicate different strategies for sustainable development in shrinking cities. Embedded into different national backgrounds, including urban dynamics and support schemes for the green economy, the selected cases share the objectives of greening and regrowing strategies relying on other sectors of the green economy. The methodology applied is qualitative, including fieldwork, semi-structured interview techniques, carried out in person or remotely, and questionnaires. Findings show some positive results regarding sustainability and ecological transition in the French case, while regrowth trends were reached in the Mexican case. However, the analysis leads to uncertain scenarios for positive long-term impacts, especially due to uncertainty around future supporting policies for territorial cohesion and sustainability at national and regional levels.

Zbigniew Horbowy (1935–2019), a graduate of the Faculty of Glass of the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Wrocław, conducted from the end of the 1950s, throughout the next several decades, exceptionally fruitful and original artistic, academic, design and managerial activities on the intersection of art and industry. His artistic achievements quickly found recognition in the national art circles and in the international arena. At the same time, as the only glass designer in the times of the Polish People’s Republic, he managed to combine artistic and commercial success. The utility glasses designed by him and mass-produced and sold on a mass scale were a symbol of Polish glass in general in the public awareness. He carried out his entrepreneurial activity with amazing efficiency in spite of the conditions of the industry in the People’s Republic of Poland. And this, in principle, was extremely difficult to effectively use innovation or design. As a lecturer at the PWSSP (State Higher School of Fine Arts), then a member of the university’s management and at the same time the head of design units of the leading Lower Silesian glassworks, he played an extremely important role in educating design staff and development directions of Polish industrial design.

The economy of any community depends on the values which are considered to be the most important. Social organization and technologies are subordinated to their implementation. In traditional societies, including people of the La Tène culture, the most significant issues concerned the status of individuals and the resulting interpersonal relations. The position in rank was manifested and gained through participation in military expeditions. The economy was subordinated to military action. Nonetheless, new technologies and financial solutions created opportunities for military success. This, however, has its price in enormous social inequalities and almost permanent war.

It might seem natural to think that the socialist model of the economy, and a reality where collective property prevailed, eliminated the problem of financial crime. But did it really? This paper, which presents the scale of this type of crime as reflected by GUS (Polish Central Statistical Office) statistics, is an attempt at answering this question. At the same time we would like to present the “3 Cs” model (circumstances, character, chance), in which all the “C” factors occurred simultaneously, but on each occasion each of these had a different impact on the particular criminal act.
