Opis:
The purpose of this article is to explore the traditions and customs commemorated by the school community from the Austrian annexation. It presents their involvement in the celebration of national anniversaries (e. g. the adoption of the Constitution of May 3, the battle of Raclawice, uprisings) and religious ones (including Christmas, Easter, Corpus Christi, All Souls’ Day). On the other side, it shows events associated with Polish education (e. g. National Commission of Education day) and also the functioning of the school (school anniversaries, the day of the patron saint of the school). It takes into consideration the ways of commemorating the achievements of people who contributed to the history of Polish learning and culture (e. g. Tadeusz Kościuszko, Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki). In addition, it explores the attitudes of the teachers to Polish traditions and customs. The above issues are illustrated on the basis of selected diaries and memoirs written by pupils and teachers.

Opis:
The present paper is a publication of a new portorium inscription found in one of the late Roman loess pits in the courtyard of the principia (headquarters building) of the legio I Italica and testifying to the existence of the station of the great Illyrian customs district at Novae. The stone bears a dedication to Numen Augusti and Genius portorii and was set up by two servi vilici from the station staff on behalf of G. Iulius Eutyches, the conductor of the Illyrian customs district. The author of the paper dates the stone to AD 169-175 and tries to localise the station near the eastern gate of the legionary fortress. The critical context of the publication includes the findspot of the inscription, topography of the area situated directly to the east of the fortress, location of the Roman landing place and finally also the scene XXXV of the Trajan’s column representing a fortress on the Danube bank which can be identified with Novae.

Opis:
Istanbul is one of the most popular motives in the writings of Abdülhak Şinasi Hisar (1887-1963). The famous Turkish novelist used to complain that even the inhabitants of Istanbul have forgotten the history and traditions of their city. One of his memories, called Boğaziçi Mehtapları, refers to the custom called mehtap, which was still cultivated at the end of 19th century, but has been completely forgotten forty years later. Mehtap was a kind of a trip made in special boats called kayık on waters of the Bosphorus, performed in the moonlight with accompaniment of music. A.Ş. Hisar presents all details regarding to the organizational part of mehtaps, which is really important from the historical and ethnographical point of view, but the article focuses on literary value of these memories, which created a poetic picture of Istanbul in the moonlight.

Opis:
The article considers the economic and political use of small lead seals (tag seals) to validate different kinds of social relations in early medieval Poland and Rus’. Originated in Antiquity, the practice of sealing peaked in Byzantium from where it spread to Early Rus’. This is reflected, for example, in the use in late 11th-late 14th centuries of small lead seals referred to as the “Drohiczyn type”. In this paper I put forward an opinion that not all the early medieval small lead seals should be attributed to “coinless economy”. A study of the corpus of small lead seals from Drohiczyn and Czermno, and finds from Mazovia, has identified a group with iconography identical to the Polish Hohlpfennig, suggesting they were commercial-customs small lead seals used by the Piast dynasty, contemporary with the bracteates introduced in the first half/mid-13th-early 14th centuries. The extraordinary number of small lead seals found in Drohiczyn possibly reflects the outstanding position of the town in the Eastern and Central European relationships as well as a short-term relocation of trade routes leading north, caused by the military conflicts of the 1240-1280s in the upper course of the Western Bug. The practice of sealing could have been introduced by Conrad of Mazovia to Poland from Early Rus’. Subsequently, the small Polish lead seals might have contributed to the emergence of lead cloth seals in Western Europe as part of a cultural transfer.

Opis:
Kazakh traditional wisdom says “Kaytyp kelgen kyz zhaman” - a girl who returns to her parental home after marriage is a disgrace to the family. According to a women’s rights organization, up to 5,000 bride kidnapping acts occur annually in contemporary Kazakhstan. The authors would like to approach this socio-cultural phenomenon through considering the current situation of women and their rights in Kazakhstan. The article examines how outdated traditions and customs violate women’s’ personal boundaries and rights in Kazakhstan. Its main purpose is to attract the attention of the reader and potential researcher and to familiarize them with the topic (a specific form of violence against women), research methods, and research challenges. Until September 2019, there was no special legislation in Kazakhstan aimed at combating domestic violence. However, with the adoption of the Law “On the Prevention of Domestic Violence and the Protection of Victims of Domestic Violence” in September 2019, Kazakhstan introduced institutional measures to prevent and punish domestic violence. Nevertheless, people continue to follow their traditional customs, rather than live in accordance with new legislation.
