The article contains selected results of research from spring 2020 among students of universities in Białystok. The author distinguished 9 types of socio-cultural identity in the religious dimension. He also made an attempt to establish a relationship between these types and selected features of the family environment. The following were used as independent variables: the level of parents’ education, opinions of the surveyed students on the level of parents’ religiosity and the relationship between the respondents and their parents in childhood and adolescence. The relationship between the number of children in the respondent’s family and the type of social and cultural identity in the religious dimension were also analyzed.

Opis:
Bunjevci from the region of Bačka are a deeply divided community: some of them believe they are a separate ethnic group with a distinct language, while others claim they are a subgroup of Croats and speak a Croatian dialect. The paper explains historical roots of the group’s divided ethnic consciousness and explores its consequences on the construction of their contemporary identities. First, the formation of Bunjevci as a pre-modern ethnicity in Dalmatia is discussed. It is followed by an account of historical experiences of those of them who later migrated to the Danube region in Hungary. The paper is concluded by a comparison between the Bunjevci’s two models of language regulation and politics of memory.

The aim of the article is to present the jurisprudence of the Human Rights Committee on Article 27 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights concerning the rights of persons belonging to ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities. Therefore, the study examines the underprivileged position of minorities within States and focuses on their will to survive as a distinct culture. Examination of the aforementioned caselaw provides an insight into the Committee’s understanding of the concept of cultural identity.

The aim of the article is to discuss the Sarmatian cultural transfer into the social space of Lor-raine as a manifestation of the Polish cultural identity of the king of Poland, duke of Lorraine and Bar, Stanislaus Leszczynski, a European and a citizen of the world. Leszczynski’s prolific contributions in his new homeland had its roots in the Sarmatian culture, one in which he grew up and which became ingrained in his consciousness. Through the Polish monarch and his Polish entourage, elements of Polish cultural identity—profoundly anchored in the Sarmatian background—began to permeate into the social space of the new homeland of Lorraine.

The aim of the article is to analyse the theme of cultural identity in the novel „I grandi occhi del mare” by Leonard Guaci. Starting from Gioia di Cristofaro Longo’s theoretical assumptions concerning the connection between identity and culture, we stress the influence of Italian culture on the sense of identity felt by the characters who represent Albanians living in the period of Enver Hoxha’s communist dictatorship. The analysis also draws on the theories of scholars such us Hannah Arendt, Homi Bhabha, Dominique Chancé, Giovanni Marchetti, Nora Moll.

The trading centre in Janów Pomorski is a well-researched and documented settlement. However, no research has been conducted into the toponymy in the context of the cultural identity of Truso settlers. This article is an original reflection on the possible relations between Ilfing, a river known from Wulfstan’s account, and Ifing mentioned in the Poetic Edda. Professor L. Słupecki’s remark on the undeniable similarity of the two names of the rivers inspired a stimulated discussion.

The following paper constitutes a part of my master thesis on the consequences of the 1979 Iranian Revolution on Kurdish folk music. The strong identity claimed by the Islamic Republic of Iran and particularly by Ruhollah Khomeini led to an obscuration of the Iranian cultural plurality, dominated by the Persian culture. Iranian music is often understood as Persian music while regional genres were confined to small areas. The domination of folk and regional identities by institutional, more-erudite identities is not limited to Iran but can be observed worldwide; however, the restricted access to music and research in the years following the Iranian Revolution enhanced this tendency in the country. In other words, vernacular genres including Kurdish folk music were denied a global presence and are still overshadowed by the dominance of classical music. Academic works made shortly after the revolution by important figures such as Jean During highlights a confusion between what was intended as folk music by the Kurdish population and what was perceived as such by foreign researchers. For this reason, the distinction between vernacular and classical music is still enforced nowadays, leading to an increasing gap between Persian culture and that of Iranian minorities. Furthermore, with Kurdish folk music being a regional genre and as political conflicts arouse between Iranian Kurds the Islamic Republic of Iran after 1979, Kurdish music is often perceived through a political lens only, denying the variety of reasons a genre may become popular and reducing music to a mean towards an objective. Through the perception of Kurdish folk music, this paper interrogates how political conflicts and cultural hegemony in music affects the representation of vernacular identities and seeks to explore how this participates in the discrimination of minorities.

In this paper, the borderlands, in the context of the psychological perception of frontiers, were presented. The common relationships between different nationalities living in border twin towns was a principal point of analysis. During the investigation two main research questions were asked: Is a frontier a barrier or a bridge in the common relationships between nationalities living on both sides of the borderline? and Does the trans-border casual social integration stimulate openness to neighbours? The study was conducted in two double towns: la Jonquera (Els límits) - Le Perthus at the Spanish-French border and Słubice - Frankfurt-am-Oder at the Polish-German border. The data were gathered from surveys by questioning locals and visitors during street polling. The design of the questionnaire included three main groups of questions relating to: 1) the perception of the borderline and the role of the border twin towns, 2) the attitude towards neighbours and identification with the borderlands, and 3) the future of the borderline in the context of the twin towns existence and cross-border linkages. The results showed that the historical circumstances and cultural background play a crucial role in the current bilateral interrelations between nations sharing the common space of the twin towns. These two aspects of the borderland have an influence on the psychological perception of the border that creates mental boundaries in local societies. However, as the results proved, the necessity of living together pushed locals to be more open-minded, which as a consequence supported the establishment of social bonds.

The objective of this text consists in presenting how it is necessary for contemporary translators and interpreters (both literary and specialised) to acquire and develop the ability to recognize elements of identity discourse in translated texts. Nowadays, the need for inter-cultural exchange is inevitably connected with the necessity of establishing harmonious co-existence for numerous cultures and identities. Therefore, it is crucial to educate translators in a way that enables them to pay special attention to identity and cultural perturbations present in translated texts (culture and language hybridisation, multiple identity, cultural dislocation, presence in linguistic and political discourse of minority cultures), regardless of their genre or form. Such a strong emphasis on identity problems in the translation is especially relevant in the European context, where the attention of researchers and politicians directed at identity problems stemming from ethnical and cultural issues sets the framework for a new cultural paradigm that determines the future development of the EU. Becoming acquainted with this paradigm which emphasises fluency, identity unmarkedness and the new model of European collectivity is indispensable for a translator aspiring to become a true cultural mediator.

Rok 1989 i zmiany polityczne oraz społeczne w Polsce przyniosły duże możliwościrozwoju języka i kultury kaszubskiej. Jednym z przejawów tego faktu było pojawienie sięw 1990 roku czasopisma „Tatczëzna”. Pismo wychodziło zaledwie przez rok, będąc inicjatywąwydawniczą młodych ludzi, studentów trójmiejskich uczelni, którzy postanowili swą działalnością krzewić kaszubską podmiotowość społeczną. W decyzji o założeniu periodyku stawiali na świeżość swojego spojrzenia, emocjonalny autentyzm oraz chęć dotarcia do możliwie szerokiego środowiska Kaszubów. Inne z pism – „Òdroda” – to kaszubskojęzyczny miesięcznik istniejący od końca 1999 roku do stycznia 2006 roku. Powstanie pisma było wynikiem dyskusji nad kwestią tożsamości i narodowości kaszubskiej. W sensie głoszonych poglądów miało wymiar radykalny, zgłaszając postulaty polityczne, administracyjne i edukacyjne. Były one prezentowane z dużo większym żarem i z silniejszym ładunkiem emocji, aniżeli robiono to w głównym periodyku Kaszub o Pomorza ‒ „Pomeranii”. Na przykładzie zawartości „Tatczëzny” i „Òdrody” można zaobserwować proces wybijania się samoświadomości kaszubskiej z przestrzeni dotychczas sterowanej ideologiczną cenzurą polityczną ku coraz większej podmiotowości. Animatorzy analizowanych periodyków podjęli zadania wcześniej już realizowane przed liderów ruchu kaszubskiej tożsamości, teraz jednak wyrażali je dobitniej, nawet z pewnym radykalizmem. Za pośrednictwem publicystyki szukali możliwie dużego społecznego i politycznego wsparcia dla swoich idei, co zakończyło się częściowym sukcesem.
The year 1989 and the political and social changes in Poland of that time brought great opportunities of developing a language and culture for the Kashubian cultural tradition. A manifestation of this fact was the appearance in 1990 of the magazine „Tatczëzna”. Itwas issued for only a year as an editorial initiative of young people, the students of Tri-City universities who had decided to promote the Kashubian social subjectivity. On deciding to start the journal they gave priorities to freshness of their views, emotional authenticity and a desire to reach the possibly widest Kashubian environment. Other periodical – „Òdroda” was a monthly magazine written in Kashubian, which existed since the end of 1999 to January 2006. It came into being as a result of discussions on the issue of the Kashubian identity and nationality. It was radical in terms of expressed ideas, propounding political, administrative and educational proposals. They were announced with much greater zeal and a stronger emotional load than in the main Kashubian and Pomeranian journal – „Pomerania”. For example, through the content of „Tatczëzna” and „Òdroda” one can observe a process of Kashubian self-awareness towards ever greater subjectivity emerging from the space previously controlled by ideological and political censorship. The creators of the above analyzed periodicals took the tasks previously undertaken by the leaders of the Kashubian identity movement, but now expressed them forcefully, even with a certain type of radicalism. Through the medium of publications they were seeking the greatest possible social and political support for their ideas, in which they succeeded only partially.

Österreich blickt auf eine lange Literaturgeschichte mit inter/transkultureller Prägung zurück. Viele der österreichischen Autoren sind Grenzgänger zwischen den Kulturen, ihre interkulturelle Bindung verleiht ihnen eine „brückenschlagende“ Funktion: Die literarischen Texte von Autoren mit Migrationshintergrund bilden heute einen festen Bestandteil der österreichischen Gegenwartsliteratur und sie geben der österreichischen Literatur literarisch und ästhetisch interessante Impulse. Viele von ihnen wollen sich unter neuen kulturellen Bedingungen, in einer anderen Umwelt durchsetzen, sich im Kulturkreis der neuen Heimat positionieren oder vielleicht sogar ihre kulturelle Identität neu entwerfen. In ihren Texten kann man neben Thematisierungen eines Zustands der kultureller Verpflanzung und Neuverortung auch der Auseinandersetzung mit Fragen der nationalen und kulturellen Identität finden. In dem Beitrag wird der Frage nachgegangen, mit welchen Identitätsentwürfen der Leser in den Texten von einem inzwischen im deutschsprachigen Literaturbetrieb etablierten Autor mit Migrationshintergrund konfrontiert wird: Gegenstand der Analyse bilden ausgewählte Texte von Radek Knapp, einem literarischen „Brückenbauer“ des polnisch-österreichischen Kulturraums. Die ausgewählten literarischen Texte Knapps werden daraufhin befragt, wie (und ob) die dargestellten Figuren ihre Identität herstellen oder bewahren sowie wie Radek Knapp auf das „Österreichische“ ein bzw. mit dem „Österreichischen“ umgeht.
Austria can look back on a long history of literature which is marked by its inter-/transcultural character. Many of the Austrian authors are cross-border commuters, their intercultural ties give them a “bridge-breaking” function: The literary texts of authors with a migration background today form an integral part of Austrian contemporary literature and give literary and aesthetically interesting impulses to Austrian literature. Many of them want to assert themselves under new cultural conditions, in a different environment, to position themselves in the cultural circle of the new home, or perhaps even to redesign their cultural identity. In their texts one can find not only the themes of a state of cultural transplantation and relocation, but also the examination of questions of national and cultural identity. The article investigates which identity drafts the reader is confronted with in the texts by an author with a migration background who has meanwhile established themself in the German-language literary scene: The analysis focuses on selected texts by Radek Knapp, a literary “bridge builder” of the Polish-Austrian cultural area. The selected literary texts of Knapp are then analysed in order to see how (and if) the depicted figures establish or preserve their identity and how Radek Knapp approaches and deals with the “Austrian-ness”.

Die Schriftsteller mit dem sog. Migrationshintergrund gehören zu denjenigen Menschen, die als Migranten einen einschneidenden Kultur- und auch Sprachwechsel hinter sich haben und deren Lebenslauf durch diesen Wechsel zwischen Sprachen und Lebensformen geprägt ist. Die neue Sprache ermöglicht den Zugang zu einer neuen, anderen Kultur, somit auch den Zugang zu einer neuen kulturellen Identität sowie – last but not least – zu einem neuen Lesepublikum, was im Falle des literarischen Schaffens doch von entscheidender Bedeutung sein kann, weil die Schriftsteller sich absichtlich für einen neuen Adressatenkreis entscheiden. Obwohl man meist in der Sprache den wichtigsten Identitätsmarker sieht und anerkennt, begründet das Deutsche als literarisches Ausdrucks- und Publikationsmedium im Falle der transkulturellen Schriftsteller keine homogenen nationalen Identitäten, sondern erfüllt die Funktion eines Transitraumes, einer-zone, eines transkulturellen Raumes der gegenseitigen Durchdringung und Verflechtung des Kulturellen sowie der Transformation nationaler Zugehörigkeiten und der kulturellen Identität. In den Texten der Migrantenautoren spiegelt sich die Bedeutung des Umgangs mit zwei Sprachen wider, weil die Zweisprachigkeit von Migranten – oft im Zusammenhang mit dem Thema der kulturellen Identität – in der Migrantenliteratur eine Rolle spielt. Die Schriftsteller versuchen, ihre eigene Zweisprachigkeit in die Texte einzubringen, in denen häufig beide Kulturen und Sprachen koexistieren. Im Referat werden ausgewählte Texte von dem polnisch-österreichischen Schriftsteller Radek Knapp einer Analyse unterzogen. Der Beitrag geht der Frage nach, wo und wie sich die Zweisprachigkeit und Sprachmischungen in den einzelnen Texten Knapps manifestieren.
The writers with the so-called migration background are among those people who have undergone a dramatic change of culture and language as migrants and whose curriculum vitae is shaped by this change between languages and ways of life. The new language allows access to a new, different culture, thus also access to a new cultural identity and – last but not least – to a new reading public, which in the case of literary creation can be of crucial importance because the writers deliberately decide on a new addressee group. Although one mostly sees and acknowledges the most important identity marker in language, German as a literary medium of expression and publication in the case of transcultural writers does not establish homogeneous national identities, but fulfills the function of a transit space, a zone, a transcultural space of interpenetration and interweaving the cultural as well as the transformation of national affiliations and cultural identity. The texts of migrant authors reflect the importance of dealing with two languages because the bilingualism of migrants, often in the context of cultural identity, plays a role in migrant literature. The writers try to bring their own bilingualism into the texts, where often both cultures and languages co-exist. In the presentation selected texts are subjected to an analysis by the Polish-Austrian writer Radek Knapp. The article explores the question of where and how bilingualism and language mixtures manifest themselves in the individual texts of Knapp.

The paper presents an overview discussion of the conceptualizations of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) formulated by Russian scholars. The conceptions of the ICC are quite diverse as well as terminology used by the scholars. The authors place emphasis on the psychological aspects of the ICC, distinguishing psycho- physiological, personality, socio-psychological and psycho-pedagogical levels of its analysis.

Autorka analizuje zabiegi literackie mające na celu demitologizację figury Berehyni w wybranych powieściach Oksany Zabużko, Sofiji Andruchowycz i Natałki Śniadanko. Postępująca od lat dziewięćdziesiątych w wysokoartystycznym dyskursie literackim oraz w literaturze środka demitologizacja figury Berehyni jest jednym z najważniejszych elementów procesu (re)konstruowania kobiecej tożsamości społeczno-kulturowej, gdyż zawiera się w tej demitologizacji sprzeciw kobiet wobec zastanej sytuacji. Współczesne autorki dobitnie pokazują, że za symbolem prawdziwej ukraińskiej kobiety kryją się różnorodne jednostki, mające swoje rzeczywiste problemy, doświadczenia i przede wszystkim niemające dotąd prawa do własnej reprezentacji.
The author analyses the literary treatments aimed at the demythologization of the Berehynia figure in selected novels by Oksana Zabuzhko, Sofija Andrukhovych and Natalka Sniadanko. Progressing from the nineties in a highly artistic literary discourse (and also in middle literature) the demythologization of the Berehynia figure is one of the most important elements of the process of the (re)construction of the female socio-cultural identity, as it contains the opposition of women to the existing situation.
