In the paper, the author attempts to reconstruct the image of a Catholic convert as conveyed in Norwegian media. The text first reconsiders the historical factors which affected the presence of Catholicism in Norway (Christianisation, Reformation, ban on Catholic religious practices, and the change of laws granting freedom of denomination). Subsequently, the author discusses several instances of famous Norwegian converts, including writer and Nobel prize winner Sigrid Undset, and reconstructs the social and intellectual climate which accompanied conversions in the interwar years. The article shows the specificity of Norwegian Catholicism, which consists in an exceptionally high share of people with university degrees and members of the Norwegian intellectual elite among the converts. Taking into account these particular conditions, the author describes the singular social climate and media coverage which surrounds the conversions.słowa klucze

This article examines the wartime texts produced by two deeply believing Catholics – Jerzy Andrzejewski and Czesław Miłosz. In 1942, at the time of the deportations to Treblinka, these young but already prominent Warsaw men of letters and believing Catholics engaged in a correspondence which examined the ethical crisis of the Jewish genocide and its impact on Christian humanism. Miłosz and Andrzejewski followed their epistolary exchange with literary responses to the 1943 Ghetto Uprising. Whereas the letters conceptualized possibilities of moral restoration, the literary works – Miłosz’s two poems, Campo di Fiori and Biedny Chrześjanin patrzy na getto (A Poor Christian Looks at the Ghetto) and Andrzejewski’s novella Wielki Tydzień (Holy Week) – focused on the devastating impact of the Jewish genocide on their Polish Catholic world. These literary works see the event of the Holocaust as an irrevocable failure of the Catholic dogmas of caritas and love for the Other.

Nowadays, the so-called Banat Bulgarians are a numerous group of the descendants of Bulgarian Catholics, which were forced to emigrate to Wallachia in the end of the 17th century and in the beginning of the 18th century and from there in years 1738–1741 to Banat. Small part of them (after 1878) returned to Bulgaria where they establish new villages. Most of them still live in Romanian territory, decidedly less numerous colonies are in Hungary and in Serbia. From the end of 19th century they were a subject of interest to historians and linguists. For historians, their history were extremely  interesting.  For  linguists,  because  they  managed  to  salvage  the  dialect  which became (in the half of the 19th century) a base of literary norm that was to shape their language.

Christians feel that they should not be indifferent to war, and that it is their duty to react to harm, particularly done to civilians. Catholics expect their greatest authority, the Pope, to have a firm say about war and peace. May people, however, have had the impression that Pope Francis is erratic and assesses the situation in a wrong way. Although he follows the beaten track paved by the Church’s social science and Vatican diplomacy, some of his statements (and things left unsaid) caused and still are causing controversy. The article attempts at understanding the position of Pope Francis. It analyses his utterances regarding war, taken from sources such as the book titled Against War, speeches and social media (Twitter).

Opis:
In the second decade of the 20th century (especially in the years 2016-2020), a significant number of films by Polish female directors were released in which Catholicism and the Catholic Church were attacked. They were: W imię… [In the Name of…], Body/ciało [Body], Twarz (Mug) and Córka boga [The Other Lamb] – all directed by Małgorzata Szumowska; Dzikie róże [Wild Roses] by Anna Jadowska, Pokot [Spoor] by Agnieszka Holland and Kasia Adamik, Wieża. Jasny dzień [Tower. A Bright Day] by Jagoda Szelc, Powrót, [Back Home] by Magdalena Łazarkiewicz, Maryjki [Marygoround] by Daria Woszek, as well as a documentary Komunia  [Communion] by Anna Zamecka. The polemic related to the above-mentioned movies commented on the religiosity of Catholics and the quality of the institutional church (priests, hierarchies, methods of ministering and teaching), religious control and repression of corporeality and sexuality (including female sexuality), and Catholicism as the foundation of the patriarchal system. These films also feature elements of the "positive program", a proposal for a new cultural paradigm (new spirituality), organized around Nature, with the suggestion of matriarchy. From the point of view of social communication, the content and poetics of above-mentioned the films were similar, according to the author, to the content of the protests of the Ogólnopolski Strajk Kobiet (Polish Women's Strike), which demonstrated in 2016 and 2020 against the tightening of abortion laws.

The paper applies to the work of one of the most important Polish writers of the last decade. Bargielska combines bold poetic experiments with a keen testimony of an ordinary life of a young woman, who experiences life in the beginning of the 21st century in Poland. On the one hand, the poet declares a conservative worldview (her value system is based on the “trinity”: Catholicism, heterosexuality, motherhood), on the other hand, she brutally and mercilessly uncovers the subjugation of a woman in the world of a male-dominated language. Her writing deconstructs this system, as it discovers the literature as a space for the practice of personal freedom beyond the slogans and ideological divisions; she manages to create her own independent form of existence. The poet renews feminine way of being through the deconstruction of religious myths and cultural stereotypes, confronted with the physiological and social reality.

Opis:
The periodical Roczniki Katolickie, published in the 1920s and 1930s, was part of an anti-modernist project created in European Catholic circles. The information about German literature, which can be found in the magazine, on the one hand, served as a means of reinforcing feelings of belonging to a borderless confessional community and, on the other hand, constituted an element of German-Polish cultural transfer. Analyzing its content helps determine the extent of influence of the forms and aesthetic and literary categories disseminated within the Catholic milieu as well as the transformations of the image of the stereotypical German that was dominant in Poland at that time.

This article provides a comparative analysis of certain lexical and grammatical peculiarities in the Catholic and Orthodox editions of the Belarusian translation of Chapters 1 and 2 of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament. The study is based on biblical textual sources in Belarusian, Polish, Greek and Russian, including explanatory and other dictionaries, as well as works on modern Belarusian literary lexicology. It is emphasized that while adapting the Gospel of Matthew into Belarusian, translators exhibit a certain dependence on the influence of foreign languages and the traditions of confessional writing, thus sometimes disregarding encyclopedic variants, or ignoring lexical, semantic and grammatical processes characteristic of the modern Belarusian literary language.

Opis:
An interesting conceptual dispute, usually called a confrontation between “the old” and “the young”, developed at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Although by its name defined as a “clash of generations”, the dispute was basically rooted in differences between two groups of writers concerning their attitudes toward arts: of traditionalists, whose starting point was the principle of the unity of truth, beauty and good, and of modernists, who relied on aestheticism and concept of l’art pour l’art’. “The young”, while upholding individualism, particularly used to stress their anti-Catholicism. The author checks whether at their root there was anti-Catholicism. He comes to the conclusion that Croatian Moderna was not an organised anti-Christian or anti-Chatolic movement, even though it isn’t doubtful that anticlericalism of “the young”, to a large degree, assumed contours of antagonism towards public expression of Catholicism in culture, harbingering at the same time secularist conceptual processes that were expressed later in the political field and all the other fields of social life.

George Weigel, in his recent book Evangelical Catholicism, proposed a vision of the reform  of the life of the Church. Because this Catholic theologian is widely known and respected, his book was translated into many languages and influenced the discussion about the shape of Catholicism  in the 21st  century. It seems desirable to learn more about Weigel’s   proposal. The article is an attempt to analyze Weigel’s idea. In order to do so, we will try to scrutinize the full notion of the term evangelical, which describes the vision of Catholicism according to Weigel. For this reason the first section of the article contains a linguistic analysis of the different Polish equivalents of the English word: evangelical. The second section is a description of the vision of George Weigel. The third section answers the question if one can say that the vision of Catholicism by George Weigel has certain evangelical (that means: according to the basics of the Evangelical Movement) characteristics. The conclusion of the analysis undertaken in the article is that the vision of Catholicism presented by George Weigel is not only compatible with the Gospel but resembles in certain aspects the ideas of Evangelicalism. As such it can be helpful in the fostering of ecumenical dialog.

The life and creative output of Rev. Nikodem Ludomir Cieszyński (1886-1942) was marked by significant events in the life of the Polish nation and state. He was born in 1886 in Koźmin but his entire pastoral ministry was connected with Poznań where he was ordained to priesthood in 1910. His activity as preacher and journalist developed in the period of national captivity, the events of the Great War and the times of interwar Poland. Subsequent significant events in the life of the Polish nation and state found their reflection in the writings of Rev. Cieszyński. His homilies, journalism, and above all editorship of the ,,Roczniki Katolickie" ("Catholic Annuals") - an exceptional case in Polish ecclesial historiography - made up a large part of his activity. The regaining of independence by Poland in 1918 was portrayed by him as an extraordinary event, the intervention of Divine Providence – hence such a prominent role of the idea of a Catholic  Poland in his writings. To this idea he remained faithful until the end of his life, which similarly to many Polish priests was terminated by the tragic events of the Second World   War.

„Kultura", a literary, artistic and social weekly published in Poznań in the years 1936-1939 was one of the four most important literary journals in interwar Poland (the others were „Wiadomości Literackie", „Prosto z Mostu" and „Pion"). The publisher was the Chief Institute of Catholic Action (officially from 1938). The editors-in-chief were Fr. Stanisław Bross, Walerian Sobkowiak and others. „Kultura" played an exceptional role among an enormous number of Catholic and religious journals of that time, owing to its high literary and artistic standard as well as on account of addressing challenging topics. The journal strove to represent an open attitude also in the social dimension and with respect to Christian philosophy (neo-Thomism, the thought of Maritain). Its authors included Zofia Starowiejska, Wojciech Bąk, Karol Hubert Rostworowski, Zofia Kossak, Gustaw Morcinek. Also the works of Claudel, Mauriac, Chesterton and Undset were published.

The analysis of the attitude of Italian citizens to social challenges - political and economic, assessed from the point of view of their own (non)religiousness, is the purpose of this study. Two methods were used during the study. The comparative one, which allows indicating the diversity of views of socio-religious groups, and the statistical one, including the quantitative and qualitative approach. The implementation of the chosen goal was based on the adoption of research hypotheses confirmed by the collected material. First of all: on many issues, the views of believers are consistent with the opinions of non-believers and distant in relation to the official position of the Church and hierarchy. Secondly, the views of people declaring themselves as believers differ, which proves that religion is not the primary reference for assessing changes within the political system. In the field of research, the change and collapse of the image of a culturally homogenous state can be noticed. The religious homogeneity of Italy does not confirm the growing number of people declaring themselves as non-believers and non-Catholic religionists. This is also not confirmed by the diversity within the group of Catholics who, in the assessment of social phenomena and political events, are inclined to follow non-religious reasons, mainly programs of right-wing parties, often populist and anti-system, which many Italian Catholics support.
