In the context of buoyant research on second language acquisition (SLA), language learning motivation has remained one of the most active fields of inquiry for more than 60 years (Al-Hoorie & MacIntyre, 2019; Ushioda, 2019). Several books have approached this topic from a range of perspectives (e.g., Dörnyei & Ushioda, 2021; Lamb et al., 2019; MacIntyre & Al-Hoorie, 2020). However, the seemingly unceasing theoretical and methodological innovation in motivation research can be confusing, and it has become increasingly overwhelming to keep abreast of all the latest advancements in this burgeoning field. In response to this “promising” yet “perplexing” situation, Ali H. Al-Hoorie and Fruzsina Szabó have edited the volume Researching language learning motivation: A concise guide, presenting a timely guidebook for both students and novice researchers to navigate their way through the journey of language learning motivation.

As a prevalent phenomenon in second language acquisition (SLA), crosslinguistic influence (CLI) has attracted ever-lasting attention, as reflected by the publication of several monographs (e.g., Cai, 2021; Jarvis & Pavlenko, 2008; Odlin, 1989; Ringbom, 2007), many edited volumes (e.g., Alonso, 2016; Gass & Selinker, 1983), and numerous research articles. In these books and papers, mounting evidence for CLI has been accumulated in various areas of languages. In particular, CLI may occur between first language (L1) and second language (L2) in lexicon, grammar, phonology, discourse, and pragmatics, with its effects being both positive and negative. Besides, it has been shown that the occurrence of CLI is constrained by a variety of factors, such as linguistic and psycholinguistic factors and those related to learning environment and language use (Jarvis & Pavlenko, 2008). CLI has been addressed from diverse theoretical perspectives including universal grammar, functional linguistics, and psycholinguistics (see Cai, 2021 for a review).

The aim of the article is to present modern readership habits and the impact of new technologies developmenton them. Those technologies and social changes can also pose a danger or provide support for the development ofreadership; however, the point is how to skilfully make use of them.Readership plays a significant role in modern societies. It is considered not only a socio-cultural tool giving peopleequal chances in life and facilitating dialogue between different cultures, but also an important economic development factor. Nevertheless, the level of readership keeps successively decreasing in developed countries. Poland is not an exception – on the contrary, the level of readership is decreasing faster than in other developed countries.This article is an outline of opportunities and barriers as well of new technologies affecting readership. The relationsbetween those opportunities or barriers and the level of readership are also discussed. The article includesa range of examples of positive solutions from abroad, suitable for introduction in Poland.

The article presents the history of the Sepher Yetzirah (Book Yetzirah, Yetzirah Book) – the earliest written work of Jewish mysticism or esoterism. Sepher Yetzirah arose in the first centuries A.D., so the prevalent opinion that it exemplifies the kabbalistic writing is false (viz. Kabbalah is the branch of Jewish mysticism/esoterism which came into being around XII century). The article deals with the hypotheses about the time the treatise was written, the problem of the authorship of the book, it analyses the title and presents the main ideas of this influential work – Sefer Yetzirah played namely an enormous role in the whole Jewish mystical, esoteric system of thought. Apart from Sefer ha-Zohar and Sefer ha-Bahir, the Book Yetzirah was the fundamental book which was explored and widely commented by a great number of kabbalists. For this reason the article briefly characterizes also the Jewish commentators of the book, as well as takes up the question of the variety of versions and editions of Sepher Yetzirah, and, besides, contains the information about the translations of the book (written in various languages). Furthermore, the present text describes the structure of the work and gives the characteristic of each yetziratic chapter, placing emphasis on the role playing in the Yetzirah Book by the concept of ten sephiroth and twenty two letters of Hebrew alphabet. The article is also noted into bibliographical guidelines on the presented topic.

This  paper  deals  with  poetic  subjects  in  the  comic  book  format  as  presented  in  the media. The subject of media entity  dominates the corpus of texts in  intermedial and post-intermedial poetry experience. These aspects of Croatian poetry from 1968 up to the present day,  whose structures  are  primarily  determined  by  contacts  with  different  media  culture texts,  are  defined by  Goran  Rem.  This  paper  explores  the  ways  in  which  the  media  inter-mediates comic book semiotics into the poetic code of that particular part of contemporary Croatian poetry and thus determines the paradigmatic forms of the subject of media/comic book.

The paper describes today’s new situation of art facing antidemocratic processes. The powerful metaphor of Parthenon of books is used, which once was the name of an installation by Marta Minujín presented just after the fall of Argentinian brutal regime in the early eighties and reinstalled again few years ago. The author points that popular “posts” of humanities (postmodernism, postsecularism etc.) need to be replaced by the philosophy of art being after some definite change. The new temporal and public condition of art being after is the result of its dramatic contemporary and future challenges.

Od 2007 roku Biblioteka Uniwersytecka w Poznaniu gromadzi komiksy oraz materiały ich dotyczące. Momentem znaczącym dla gromadzenia tych wydawnictw był zakup prywatnej kolekcji 4670 komiksów. Niniejszy artykuł definiuje pojęcie „komiks” oraz omawia trudności, jakie napotykają katalogerzy w opracowaniu formalnym tego trudnego materiału. Autorki porównały rozwiązania zastosowane w innych bibliotekach. Przedstawiły również stan prac nad katalogowaniem komiksów w Bibliotece Uniwersyteckiej w Poznaniu. Artykuł zawiera przykłady i propozycje konkretnych rozwiązań.
Poznań University Library has been collecting comic books and other relevant material since 2007. A conducive opportunity for the decision to collect comics publications was a purchase of a private collection of 4,670 comic books the very same year. The present article introduces the reader to the notion of “comic book” or “comics” and discusses problems in formal processing that face cataloguers of this difficult material. The authors compare different solutions to the problem applied in other libraries and present the current state of affairs in comics cataloguing at Poznań University Library. The article is complemented with specific examples and particular solutions to be applied in the near future.

The article reconstructs selected problems of critical and publicistic discussion around Artur Domosławski’s book Kapuściński non-fiction concerning the status of the biographical narrative, the role and duties of the biographer and the limits of biographical disclosures. The themes discussed in this sketch made it possible to indicate current issues related to workshop deficiencies and duties of the contemporary biographer, including the exposition of issues related to modernity, subjectivity and ethics of biographical undertakings.

The article concerns the relations between the main character of the film Sara (directed by M. Ślesicki in 1997) and books (especially Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment) in the context of social and political changes in Poland in the 1990s. The presence of books in popular Polish films from that period is not described in research, hence this article provides a short introduction to this subject. The main hypothesis of the paper is that the presence of books on the margins of narration in popular films reflects social changes in thinking about literature.

In his latest novel Manaraga (2017) Sorokin comments on one of the most significant problems of modern times – the results of the anticipated death of the printed book as well as the related opposition between the original and the copy. This article discusses a collection of fifty psalms published as The Poznań Psalter. A Collection of Psalms for Common Singing at Home and in Church (Poznań 2017). As a text genre, the publication represents a song book, which – according to its dictionary definition – is: ‘a collection of songs (solemn or popular) with their lyrics and notes’. The publication can alternatively be classified as a hymnal. The authors of the paraphrased psalter intended to underscore the musical character of the Biblical texts. This musical character is underscored by giving the particular psalms their regular rhythmic pattern, partly supported with a rhyming pattern. As far as the musical layer of the Poznań Psalter is concerned, the authors make a conscious reference to tradition, since the melodic lines are transferred from the Geneva Psalter (1563 edition). The language layer, on the other hand, departs from tradition, since it does not exhibit the historically marked lexical or grammatical structures. Analysing the text of the Poznań Psalter, composed by the Protestant (Reformed Evangelical Church) authors in the context of the Polish tradition of Biblical translation, one can conclude that this tradition retains its vital interdenominational nature, which – as in the case in point – is capable of using the Warsaw Bible and the Millennium Bible as sources of textual adaptation.

The Book of Wisdom, which was written on the eve of the New Testament, enriches significantly the Old Testament teaching about God’s payment. In the very heart of the eschatological part (chapters 3-4) it presents three situations, which at first glance seem to question God’s justice (the suffering of the just one, lack of offspring, premature death). The analized text (1-9,5, 15-16) is the most important expression of the awareness of afterlife gained by the Israel in the late period of the Old Testament and the most powerful evidence of that belief.

Aleksander Groza was the author of a series of three alphabet books: The greater alphabet book, The lesser alphabet book and The little alphabet book. This series was created in the Ukraine in 1860. Aleksander Groza was, first of all, a writer and poet, a representative of the so-called “Ukrainian school” in Polish literature, a nobleman and a representative of the middle-class gentry. The aim of the article is to characterize the alphabet books both in terms of structure and content. I will be interested in the values that Aleksander Groza intended to foster in his students, as well as how his ideas presented themselves against the epoch.

The tale is not just a linear, sober narrative, but a clever combination of a diegesis of a certain type, a network of images and an implicit philosophy. This is where it differs from both the short story and the fable. As a literary genre, it is less of a « simple form » (André Jolles) and more of a « simplex form » (Alain Berthoz). In this context, how to address the question of the simple style in the literary genre of the fairy tale – a genre which leans towards complexity and sophistication, more than simplicity? We will suggest that the literary ideal of simplicity advocated by Perrault, best exemplified in The Fairies, is constructed against the gallant aesthetic which was the source of French fairy tales.
