Opis:
In the article, the authors describe the process of archaeologization of selected objects in the local landscape, using examples from five municipalities located in the northern areas of the Polish Jurassic Highland. They look at the processes of persistence or transformation (replacement, revitalization, expansion) and abandonment (destruction, disappearance). The analysis of the collected materials combines the perspectives of archaeology and ethnography/cultural anthropology. It is part of the understanding of landscape as a cultural heritage that runs over time, its form and meaning are fields for negotiation by various entities (local communities, state administration and experts/researchers).

This paper is a case study of a prisoner of war and internment camp in Tuchola (Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province, Poland). The camp operated between 1914 and 1923. During the First World War it was run by Germans and later, during the Polish-Soviet War, by the Poles. The site provides a context for discussing two issues around archaeological research of the recent past. The first issue is how archaeology can be used to analyse the transformations of landscapes related to modern armed conflicts. The second point deals with the documentation and analysis of the remains of the camp using ALS derivatives. The main conclusion of this paper is that LiDAR technology can be also a useful tool in the context of approaching landscapes from the recent past.

Opis:
The principal theme of the article is the ontological status of Michel Foucault's archaeology of knowledge, with reference to “aporetic” source of its inspiration, which was undoubtedly structuralism and lacanian psychoanalysis. If Foucault's main notion – discourse, is based on the socio-historical permanence of statements related to the same formation rules, discourse formation is the field where the statements are linked and stabilized in their division. The major issue is the materiality of these statements, and consequently the material transformation rules of discourse emergence, the constitutive principle of discontinuity. As Gilles Deleuze wrote: “The present is a roll the dice [...] in one go, bones and rules are rolling”. The discourse is not just a collection of more or less structured rules, but rather a set of practices that perform an act; subjects (individual or collective) therefore do not have a permanent, structured identity within the discourse, but rather represent a constant change and the result of empowerment practices which have their own history. Reproduction of discourse is at the core of Foucault’s method (also after the “archaeological” period), which could lead us to formulate a concept of “extradiscursive politics”.

The author presents the circumstances of the rise and development of the conception that below the oldest cathedral church in Poznań is the site of a temporary or permanent baptistery as allegedly evidenced by a round limestone bowl. Attention is drawn to the fact that so far this conception has not been supported by analysis of the source material or a detailed study of the remains of the bowl itself or the architectural remains of the purported baptistery. The author makes a reassessment of hitherto claims and shows that the state of the source material does not allow us to uphold the hypothesis of the baptismal function of the limestone bowl from Poznań. The only hypothesis competitive to the baptismal one refers to 60 analogous objects, a majority of which are beyond doubt the remains of mechanical mortar mixers. The article shows that these examples can be treated as fully justified analogies to the bowl from Poznań.The text reviews the arguments of both sides of the dispute: the baptismal and “construction” claims. Weaknesses of the argument for the baptismal interpretation are exposed. Doubts raised by skeptics concerning the interpretation of the bowl as a mortar mixer are dispelled on the basis of analysis of analogous objects. The author concludes that the interpretation of the bowl as a mortar mixer is supported by numerous analogies whereas the baptismal conception lacks such support.

This paper aims to conceptualize the social role of archaeology and archeological heritage in the present. First, it contextualizes the legal and doctrinal background of activities aimed at dissemination of cultural and archaeological heritage and engagement of public in initiatives around that heritage. Next, it describes main forms of outreach activities undertaken by archaeologists in Poland. Further, it presents community-oriented activities and initiatives that go beyond education of the general public about the past and archaeology and strive for engaging local communities in activities centered around archaeology and archaeological heritage. It concludes with a statement that openness of archaeology to society helps to strengthen its current social position, determines its role in the world and attributes social activities of archaeologists with a deeper meaning.

The main goal of this paper is to reflect on the perspectives and challenges of art and archaeology research. The paper investigates main objectives through the lens of the art historian and archaeologist. Even though, the study on relations between art and archaeology has a long tradition in archaeology and the most famous researchers reflected on those tensions (Colin Renfrew, Michael Shanks, Andrew Jones, Ian Russell, Paul Reilly, Paul Bonaventura), art and archaeology approach is still not a coherent and systematic methodological framework. To deal with this notable lack, the author revises previous studies and points at the possible advantages of the development of studies at the border of art, archaeology and aesthetics. The main problems are illustrated and discussed in reference to archaeological museums and the Polish contemporary art represented by Hubert Czerepok, Agata Ingarden, Agnieszka Kalinowska, Agnieszka Kurant, Robert Kuśmirowski and Joanna Rajkowska.

Henryk Mamzer’s conception is an interesting new contribution to the development of socalled constructivist approaches in archaeology. As such it is a good example of the basic assumptions underlying its theory and methodology. In this article I will argue with some basic assumptions of Mamzer’s theory, trying to show that constructivism doesn’t rescue archaeology from the problems, which he would like to avoid. In fact, it deals with the same problems.

All the more we would like to commemorate the Professor, recalling his achievements and merits, which place him among the most outstanding Polish archaeologists, including actual members of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He made a great contribution to the development of Polish and world archaeology in the area of theoretical and field archaeological research. Many of his scientific initiatives concerned the theory and anthropology of culture as well as the methodology of archaeological research and the syntheses of prehistory and the early Middle Ages. His achievements and influence on shaping the minds of archaeologists of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century cannot be overestimated.

Lidar-derivatives gathered during the realization of IT System of Country’s Protection Against Extreme Hazards (so-called ISOK programme) have initialized the non-invasive archaeological research concerning the preservation of the relicts of the former prisoner of war and internment camp in Tuchola, Poland. The camp functioned during the Great War (1914–1918) and the Polish-Soviet War (1919–1921). This paper discusses and summaries the preliminary results of this research. It argues that the use of ethnographic methods can supplement and enrich the historical records related to the camp. The article discusses in detail the assemblage of material culture made, remade, or personalized by prisoners and internees documented during the research. These artefacts are unique examples of trench art. Discussionconcerning the objects is the main goal of this paper. They are the first examples of the trench art related to the Tuchola camp analyzed in the archaeological literature.

Opis:
In my paper, I intended to present the interpretational possibilities of a selected theoretical model, taken from the comprehensive landscape current, focusing on three burial grounds with stone circles in Pomerania, which present considerable analytical potential. These sites have a long standing record of research, relatively well explored acreage, substantial literature and, fortunately enough, some data on the possible past natural environment, provided by palinological research.  I have conducted phenomenological analysis of the space according to the tenets of its creator, Ch. Tilley. It is a two-stage analysis, combining empirical description and theoretical interpretation. The sites I have selected, i.e. Odry, Węsiory and Grzybnica, approached as phenomena found in the Wielbark culture, were, in my opinion, perfectly suited to be subjected to such analysis. The latter confirmed the sacral and symbolic character, while thanks to the detailed description at the interpretation stage, I managed to outline their significance as an important site where the worlds of the living and the dead came into contact. A site chosen in the past by the human chiefly due to its location in the natural surroundings, which points to presence of an important relation between man and environment, a relation which made burial grounds become sites, experienced and created by man in the landscape. I am of the opinion that the work in which I utilised phenomenological analysis advanced by Ch. Tilley provides a positive answer to the question concerning the relation between man and his surroundings. The model proved valid in my research, allowing to obtain something in the shape of a picture of the past landscape. At the beginning, I wrote that “I would like to find man behind the silent stones of forgotten necropolises.” I have no doubt that I have managed to accomplish it. Even if the discovered, yet unspeaking man, who lived almost 2000 years ago, was presented by means of contemporary language of the researcher. No theoretical model can produce concrete, verifiable and conclusive answers. Thanks to my analysis I arrived at a probable depiction of past reality, which nevertheless will remain yet another interpretation of the same research material. In my opinion, this is precisely what constitutes the work of an archeologist, who ceaselessly poses questions and looks for the answer, trying to divine the silent past and to revive it in his/her words.

The author postulates to widen the term of memory with the practices of embodiment and habitual memory. It helps to grasp the ways of memorizing by the communities on a deeper level. Cultural memory is deeply rooted in routine activities, which is more or less conscious. The mnemotechnic power that lives in such activities allows for preserving of cultural models. The archaeological analyses of flint working materials present the very concrete examples of such events.

This article discusses the results of archaeological and anthropological research concerning material remains of a prisoner of war camp in Czersk (Pomeranian province, Poland) (Kriegsgefangenenlager Czersk). In the first part, I sketch a broader historical context related to building and functioning of the camp in forests around Czersk between 1914–1919. After that, the role and meaning of  archaeological research on such type of archaeological sites are presented. In the third part, I focus on a very special category of the camp heritage which is called trench art. The last part of this paper is a case study where an assemblage of objects classified as trench art that was found at the camp is described and interpreted. This text aims at highlighting the value of such prisoners and camp’s heritage. Such material culture is a material memory of extraordinary prisoners’ creativity behind barbed wire. It makes one aware of how every piece of trash, rubbish was re-cycled during day-to-day life behind barbed wire.
