Opis:
The objective of this paper is to outline some aspects of dwarfism in the Antiquity. The author focuses in particular on Ancient Egypt where one of the most prominent of gods – Bes – suffered from dwarfism. It was believed that little people were somehow connected to other Egyptians gods, which is why they were treated with respect and dignity. Different attitude towards little people can be seen in AncientIsrael where they were excluded from the society, as disability at the time was considered as a punishment from God. The paper also covers Ancient Greece. Aristotle was the first scholar to describe dwarfism. He noted in particular the intelligence of the little people, which according to him was not developed particularly well, compared to the rest of the society.

The article discusses the philosophical syncretism of the Renaissance time period in a lesser known sixteenth century text of Jan Grotowski Ai.e. Socrates, Diogenes and Themistocles. The description of the interlocutors refers both to their antique and Renaissance descriptions. In addition, the issue of nobleness that comes from birth and the one that comes from living a good life is discussed. The notion of virtue as it was presented in Grotowski’s work is outlined, as well as the relations between the body, soul and the spirit included in it that influence the interpretation of the notion “nobleness”.

Vogt-Spira Gregor, Latin: Back to the Future? Some Reflections on Latin and Literacy in the Digital Age (Łacina: powrót do przyszłości? Kilka refleksji nad łaciną i kwestiami literackimi w epoce digitalizacji). This paper argues that Latin meets the challenges of this day and age so that its preservation actually has a well-founded place within European countries and societies. The argumentation starts by the observation that Latin gathers a number of additional values as an alterity training, a cognitive training, a linguistic training or a socially integrative effect, values, which are remarkably not bound to a specific culture. Above all, digitization and the modern cybernetic world is seen as a central challenge, digitization with its enormous quantitative increase in reading and writing activity also transforms the user profile in a way that complements it, a factor to which educational institutions have yet to come up with a conclusive response. Referring to this development, Latin has the particular significance of imparting the standards of an elaborate written form into the composition and decoding of texts. Furthermore, Latinity itself is considered to be one of the key factors that have shaped modern-day Europe, and the later Latin-language literature is seen to be a comprehensive component of each country’s respective national literature and culture. To conclude, the ancient European custom is brought into focus that, practically, antiquity serves as a vehicle for legitimizing modernization.

Cleopatra VII

reminiscence of antiquity
Opis:
For more than two thousand years Cleopatra has been an inspiration of artists. At the turn of the 20th and 21st century she became one of the icons of our (European) perception of Egypt. She is certainly better known than the builders of pyramids or Ramesses the Great, and she is remembered better than the names of ancient rulers. One may even venture to claim that although little is known, she is a familiar, not to say clichéd figure. One needs to consider what hides behind the representations of Cleopatra we encounter everyday in various aspects of popular culture-advertising, products of daily use, television. In my opinion, we only perceive the picture contrived by Octavian and the writers devoted to him-a femme fatale of the antiquity, an ambitious and ruthless temptress. Horace, Propertius, Florus and Pliny conveyed in their works an image of Cleopatra which met Octavian Augustus’ expectations: of a woman defeated in the eyes of the victor. A cursory read of their works in the 18th century, in the wake of renewed interest in antiquity following the discovery of Pompeii and Herculanum, led to uncritical repetition of Cleopatra’s depiction-first, in the historiography, and then in popular culture. Stereotypes concerning Egypt developed, reinforced by the descriptions of travelers. In the light of the latter, the country appears a quintessence of the Orient, with all its riches and delights. The figure of the last queen of ancient Egypt suited such notion perfectly. The most interesting issue is that today, when through archeological and historical research Cleopatra’s life became known in greater detail, the popular culture, advertising and cinematography in particular, keeps on perpetuating the stereotypical representation of this extraordinary woman. I incline towards the views of M. Krajewski, who claims that popular culture has become a lens sifting reality, and in striving to become an integral element of reality, it selects whatever is helpful (discarding the rest). The answer to the question of whether the image of Cleopatra originates from sources or stems from our stereotypes of Egypt, is, I think, a complex one. It was precisely the superficial reading of sources rediscovered, as it were, in the 18th century, that brought forth the stereotypes, whose reverberations in popular culture of the 20th and the 21st century created a specific picture of the last Egyptian queen. The “present–day” picture of Cleopatra is in a way a remote echo of Augustian propaganda, whose charm still holds sway over us. I wished to demonstrate this dependence by showing various aspects of popular culture, from press to cosmetics. Popular culture adopted those features of Cleopatra that help sell merchandise-youth, amorous intrigue, alleged beauty and murder. We cannot escape the influence she exerts on us and our lives, yet what lies beneath the facade of a pretty face with a ureus-adorned temples deserves consideration. In the case of Cleopatra VII it is a fascinating history of life and death of one of the most influential women of her times.

The article addresses the issue of multicultural settlements from ancient until modern times, located on the Vistula floodplains within Urzecze micro-region. Archaeological, historical and partly ethnographic research indicate an “island” rather than dispersed nature of the local settlement. The separation of clusters allowed to discover many hitherto lost medieval villages or parts of them. The main advantage of long-term settlement on the floodplain was the proximity to a large navigable river (trade, fishing) and fertile soil, compensating for the losses resulting from the frequent floods.

Opis:
In our age “without the emperor”, fascination with empires and with the emperor mystique continues. Take for witness Tolkien and his Return of the King, the third sequel of The Lord of the Rings, or the television serial Game of Thrones. In the background, of course, is the lingering memory of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire, “a revolution which is still felt by all nations of the world”, to quote Edward Gibbon. It comes as a surprise that in this dramatic moment of its history, in times marked by political, economic and spiritual crisis that shook the very foundations of the Empire during the 3rd century, historians and art historians have recognized the revival of plebeian culture (arte plebea, kleinbürgerliche Kultur). It was the Italian historian Santo Mazzarino, talking at the XI International Congress of the Historical Sciences in Stockholm in 1960, who introduced a new paradigm: the “democratization of culture”. In the light of the historical process in the late Roman Empire, when growing autocracy, bureaucracy, militarization and social tensions leave no doubt as to the real political character of the government, the new paradigm opened up fresh approaches to the phenomenon of decadence and decline of the Roman world. As such, it stands against traditional scenario of the “triumph of barbarism and Christianity”, which was made responsible for the fall of the Roman Empire and the eclipse of the classical civilization of ancient Greece and Rome. It is not by accident that the new paradigm appeared around the middle of the 20th century, at the time when European society itself underwent a kind of “democratization of culture”, faced with the phenomenon of mass culture and the need to find new ways of evaluating popular art. Today, more than anything else, the notion of “democratization of culture” in late Roman Empire forces us to acknowledge a disturbing correspondence between autocratic and populist forms of government. It may come as a shock to learn that the very emperors who went down in Roman history as villains and culprits (such as Caligula, Nero or Commodus), were sometimes considered the most “democratic” among Roman rulers. Do we need to feel certain unease at this historical parallel?

The article presents the teachings of the three desert mothers: Syncletica, Sarah and Theodora, focusing on those indications that can support the spiritual development of both lay and consecrated persons. The basic source is the apophthegmata in the Gerontikon. The analysis of the statements of the desert mothers allows us to conclude that the content of many of their thoughts remains valid to the present day. Importantly, all of them are the fruit of the experience of spiritual life, not theoretical, pious considerations.
