In recent years there has been a rise in interest in documentary works based on personal memories of participants and witnesses of different events. A book of the blockade by Ales Adamovich and Daniil Granin is based on the recollections and diaries of Leningrad residents who survived the blockade. It carries great emotional, philosophical and moral weight, and gives an understanding to what the residents of the city believed in and hoped for. Using the materials of A book of the blockade the author of the article aims to analyze how documents and the writers’ side notes affect a reader, and pinpoint the ways of presenting the notion of hope in the authentic diaries of Leningrad residents. As a result of the analysis of the mentioned text, the author reaches a conclusion that in the diaries the feeling and the emotion of hope is continuously updated in the course of creation of personal diaries by Leningrad residents. The concept of hope reflected on in A book of the blockade has a complex content, which can be associated with the triune concept of faith-hope-love. In the discourse of the authors, the concept preserves its Christian meaning – the spiritual salvation of a person. Yet its specifics is that the religious component is initially missing, and is subsequently gained through considerable changes that happen within and without those whose testimonies are collected in the book, and within and without the authors of the text, Adamovich and Granin.

The first edition of American Film Festival took place in Wrocław (20-24/11/2010) and became a great opportunity to watch both the classic and the latest movies made by the American filmmakers. The article Kino przestronnego kadru (Cinema of a large frame) focuses on the festival documentary section. From among the titles that are mentioned, a special author’s attention is dedicated to two movies: And Everything Is Going Fine (directed by Steven Soderbergh, 2010; a haunting picture of life and death of Spalding Gray, American writer and performer of self-written monologues) and Two Escobars (directed by Jeff and Michael Zimbalist, 2010; a story about the Colombian mafia, soccer, drugs, heroes, bandits and much more). Despite many differences beetwen them, each represents a fine art of making remarkable and moving documentaries and for sure it’s worth interest.

Opis:
Prosthetic memory refers to memories acquired because of the personal experience of receiving audiovisual and multisensory products of mass culture (Skalska, 2014, p. 343). The article attempts to answer the question of whether a documentary narrating a silenced event with no full representation, can function as a medium of prosthetic memory? I attempt to indicate how the film structure of Action T4, A Doctor Under Nazism (dir. Catherine Bernstein, 2014) can generate the experience of events getting blurred in communicative memory and not yet fixed in cultural memory. Is the bricolage structure of the film narrative, engaging the viewer’s attention and emotions, capable of bringing back from oblivion those who had to die because they were deemed unworthy of life, i.e. psychiatric hospital patients and persons with disabilities? Can a documentary film, by evoking facts affected by amnesia and pushed out of memory, manage to turn the traces of the absence of the victims of Action T4 into a m e m o r y that, at least for a moment, will restore their indispensable human dignity?

Opis:
The atmosphere of a big city, as well as registering the motion of the city as a symbol of modern industrial civilization, fascinated the first directors of photography at the turn of the 20th century. Some years later, the subject of the metropolis was developed by avant-garde artists. Among early cinematic images of the city, the foremost place is held by Walter Ruttmann’s 1927 film Berlin: Symphony of a Metropolis. It was the first multifaceted and comprehensive documentary picture of the city. The city is shown without any anecdote or story, without an individual hero, distinct from theatre or literature. Ruttmann shows the diversity, complexity and co-dependence of the urban organism, which becomes something of a machine in perpetual motion. Ruttmann’s film unveils the uniformity of big-city life, the unification of the imagination, expectations, needs and dreams. The world of “Berlin” is created mainly by editing. Motion – the result of artistic endeavours, together with the rhythmic order of the images, determine the artistic vision of the film as a whole. Ruttmann’s rhythmic interpretation aims at breaking the boundaries between art and non-artistic reality.

Opis:
The Danish director Andreas M. Dalsgaard’s film The Human Scale (2012) is discussed in the context of recent documentaries on similar subjects that have been shown at human rights festivals. The Human Scale is primarily an excellent lecture on the ideas of Danish architect and urban planner Jan Gehl. The cognitive tools of persuasion and artistic means were equilibrated and combined in the film in order to convince the viewer of the value of Gehl’s concepts.
