Opis:
Within the realm of contemporary urban design theory and practice, a number of authors have conceptualised the trends and processes of city development and planning into a series of urbanisms. This discussion essay examines the overall tenets of the ‘ReUrbanism paradigm’, a paradigm that has long been present in city planning and development but has received limited analysis and criticism and has not gained a more integrated position within the professional and academic worlds. This paper continues a paradigm development outline, leaning on the characteristics of other urbanisms in order to develop and provide a frame of reference and to contribute to the ongoing build-up of taxonomies about the trajectory of contemporary urban design thought. Focusing on the American representative case of Detroit, the authors of this paper argue for a better understanding of this urban regeneration paradigm, which they characterise as a rational urban planning & design approach in the contemporary age of inner city renewal.

Opis:
Urban geomorphology has important implications in spatial planning of human activities, and it also has a geotouristic potential due to the relationship between cultural and geomorphological heritage. Despite the introduction of the term Anthropocene to describe the deep influence that human activities have had in recent times on Earth evolution, urban geomorphological heritage studies are relatively rare and limited and urban geotourism development is recent. The analysis of the complex urban landscape often need the integration of multidisciplinary data. This study aims to propose the first urban geomorphoheritage assessment method, which originates after long-lasting previous geomorphological and geotouristic studies on Rome city centre, it depict rare examples of the geomorphological mapping of a metropolis and, at the same time, of an inventory of urban geomorphosites. The proposal is applied to geomorphosites in the Esquilino neighbourhood of Rome, whose analysis confirm the need for an ad hoc method for assessing urban geomorphosites, as already highlighted in the most recent literature on the topic. The urban geomorphoheritage assessment method is based on: (i) the urban geomorphological analysis by means of multitemporal and multidisciplinary data; (ii) the geomorphosite inventory; and (iii) the geomorphoheritage assessment and enhancement. One challenge is to assess invisible geomorphosites that are widespread in urban context. To this aim, we reworked the attributes describing the Value of a site for Geotourism in order to build up a specific methodology for the analysis of the urban geomorphological heritage.

The article, which analyses material acquired through poll collection, focuses on the awareness of inhabitants of Poznań (aged 35 to 85) of colloquial urban onymes, and is related to an earlier text by the authors, which presented results of the same poll among students of the Faculty of Polish. It turned out that commonly known and used names constitute almost half of the onymes listed in the poll (Akumulatory, Bema, Botanik, Ceglorz, Chwiałka, Dąbrówka, Deptak, Krzyże, Kupiec, Marcin, Marcinek, Okrąglak, Paderek, Pigalak, Raczyńscy, Raszeja, Struś, Szamarzewo, Teatralka). The stability of urban onymy in the language of inhabitants of Poznań is confirmed by phenomena such as: 1) transfer of names on new urban objects (Adaś, Akwarium, Ceglorz, Gargamel, Kanty, Krzyże, Młyn, Paderek, Szamarzewo, Teatralka); 2) extension of referentiality of names because of changes in extralinguistic reality (Chwiałka, Dąbrówka, Marcinek); or 3) creation of new urban onymes (Bulaj, Cyryl, Biblia), including derivates (Bema – Bemowo, Chwiałka – Chwiała).

The aim of this study is to highlight three of the urban geomorphosites of Craiova city, which can be promoted in a specific itinerary for geotourism or integrated, along with other objectives, in different touristic products. The selection of the three sites was made after analysing historical documents, images and maps, which show the landscape transformation, the development of the community and the settlement expansion. For the assessment of the sites, the method created by the University of Rome was used and two stages were performed: a) the geomorphological analysis by multitemporal and multidisciplinary approaches and b) the geomorphoheritage characterisation by calculating the VSGh index (Value of a Site for Geotourism index) based on the presence of five attributes. One of the three sites, The Valley of the 7 Wells, is nowadays an invisible geomorphosite with an important geotouristic and educational potential.

In this paper, we discuss the presence of community gardens in urban spaces and the types of activities performed there, using the city of Poznań as a case study. First, based on interviews with representatives of selected non-governmental organisations, analyses of available Internet sources as well as our own field research, cartographic and photographic documentation, we identify community gardens in the space of the city and explore their formation process. In the course of our study we also concentrate on the type of garden location. In addition, we devote our attention to the gardens which have disappeared from the fabric of the city. Our study reveals that community gardens currently operating in Poznań are established in non-central locations. These gardens are scattered in various parts of the city. Only in the Łazarz district there are two community gardens. Most frequently, community gardens are established on plots between old blocks of flats and tenement houses. Two gardens are located on underdeveloped greenery near the Warta River and in two city parks. A detailed examination of the events held in the community gardens in the Łazarz district in the years 2014–2017 shows that they had a very diversified character. Both of them turned out to be multifunctional, i.e. hosted meetings devoted to agriculture and horticulture, environmental education, artistic events, DIY and recreation. However, the percentage of events in the structure of the meetings organised in the gardens differed considerably.

Urbanization is a global phenomenon and currently more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. Studies on geomorphological heritage and the development of specific methods of investigation (assessment, inventories, cartography) are, however, relatively rare and limited. This paper first describes the relationships between urbanization and geomorphology. Secondly, it presents an overview of the main works on the urban geomorphological heritage. Then, the main methods of investigation are presented. Finally, we discuss the challenging issues concerning the protection and the promotion of the urban geomorphological heritage.

This paper deals with the problem of shaping landscape. The examples of towns of Great Poland from the 13th century were implemented and used. Their layout was not accidental. Towns were created with a substantial dose of accuracy. A market square was precisely laid out; roads were turned straight to the nearby towns, and plots were created for townsmen. It tended to be the final product of human thought and idea. The comparison of towns’ sizes shows that the same measures and similar schemes were used. In a medieval town each and every aspect was carefully planned and wellthought- out, but sometimes it was modified due to the terrain. Subsequent generations interpreted landscape on their own and occasionally changed the layout of a town. The contemporary appearance of towns is a product of thought materialisation in the living space. That is why the landscape of towns can be analysed and read.

Relocating the capital of Kazakhstan from Almaty to Akmola (then renamed Astana) in 1997 has been the subject of an intense debate, particularly within media. The process of creating the new capital of Kazakhstan should consider the broader perspective of historical, political and ideological, social, climatic and geographical factors, and finally to put the matter in terms of architecture and urban planning. The author considers this very broad perspective, finally expressing the hope that the project of “the city of the future” analyzed in the article, will become a permanent part of the Kazakh reality.

It employed survey research for data collection by observation, structured interviews with a questionnaire, and documentation. These data were later processed and analysed in a quantitative descriptive manner. The results show that, based on religion, there were two groups of beggars, namely Muslim and Hindu. Spatially, the Hindu beggars disregarded the religion of the people they implored, whereas the Muslim beggars would only target the houses and shops owned by Muslims. Those two class of beggars differ in languages, bagging duration, daily-earning, clothing, and sympathy-drawing strategy during the panhandling

Santos and São Vicente Estuarine Complex (SSEC) is a densely populated coastal area that houses the main port in Latin America and the most prominent Brazilian industrial complex. Irregular occupations in preservation areas result in a disorderly increase in population, with negative social and environmental impacts. We evaluated the average annual growth of 74 slums occurring in this area and variations in water quality from 2005 to 2018. We monitor the growth of the occupied areas and estimate their respective populations. The average annual population growth was over 6% per year (p.a.). Invasions of new areas and verticalisation of already occupied areas represent 85% of the growth seen. The monthly polluting loads exceeded 450 tonnes or 2,086,000 m3, compromising the waters and local and regional public health. We strongly recommend re-urbanising the area using the resource savings caused by water loss to reduce the risks of ecosystem degradation, damage to health and disease spread.

On the basis of two indecidable texts (Thomas Clerc, “Paris, musée du XXIe siècle. Le dixième arrondissement”, Gallimard 2007 and Philippe Vasset, “Un livre blanc”, Fayard 2007), we will reflect on new approaches to the city in contemporary French litterature. Clerc and Vasset, in their respective texts, suggest considering litterature as a series of practices connected with the exploration of the city (Clerc) and of the urban area (Vasset) according to the idea of an arbitrary itinerary. The image of the city whose space, subject to a permanent process of museification, is constantly considered to be a work of art (Clerc) contrasts with a project of viewing the deserted areas of the city and of its surroundings as an infinite collection of “artistic installations” created in daily life (Vasset). Clerc’s and Vasset’s artistic mentality leads them to the fascination with “works of involuntary art”, both concrete signs and tangible proof of the transitional period which they try to describe systematically, following, at the same time, the principles of an axonometric city map.

Choć inicjatorem działań w zakresie odnowy najczęściej były samorządy lokalne, to w wielu przypadkach opracowanie programu rewitalizacji zlecano firmie zewnętrznej. Monitoring realizacji postanowień programów rewitalizacji prowadzony jest w niewielu miastach. Wśród najczęściej wskazywanych efektów rewitalizacji wymienić należy poprawę infrastruktury technicznej, poprawę dostępności komunikacyjnej, polepszenie stanu obiektów zabytkowych, poprawę stanu środowiska przyrodniczego oraz zmniejszenie poziomu wykluczenia społecznego i spadek bezrobocia.
The article aims at identifying and summarizing the experiences in regards to the urban renewal in the Wielkopolska voivodship in the 1999–2015 period. In order to reach the purpose of the study all the local strategic documents related to urban regeneration have been analyzed. In addition, a survey was conducted among all the cities of the Wielkopolska voivodship in order to get more insights about the design and implementation of the urban renewal programmes. Uncovering the experiences resulting from the existing urban regeneration activities and projects seems to be of a special importance in the light of newly launched Renewal Act and the increasing financial means devoted to urban regeneration. The study shows that the efforts to implement the urban renewal programmes in the cities of the Wielkopolska voivodship were mainly driven by an opportunity to apply for the EU financial aid, while the economic, social and spatial problems were less of a motivation. The local activities and efforts in the realm of urban regeneration were predominantly spurred by the local authorities, but the programmes were most frequently elaborated by the private consulting companies. The study reveals that the effects of the urban renewal projects are not sufficiently monitored. The most frequently positive consequences of urban regeneration are: improvements of technical infrastructure, improvement of transport accessibility, renewal of the historical monuments, improvement of the natural environment as well as decreasing the social exclusion and unemployment.
