    Comprehensive work on the history of nineteenth-century biographical texts has not been written yet and if it had, it would have to include the laudatory biographies practiced by Warsaw’s Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Nauk (Society of Friends of Arts and Sciences). An extensive collection of them can be found in their yearbooks. This article’s object of interest is Pochwała Józefa Szymanowskiego [Praise of Józef Szymanowski] by Stanisław Kostka Potocki, which was oftentimes cited as an example of exorbitant rhetoric in the past. Widely w Knidos [Venus temple in Knidos] casts shadow on TPN’s entire biographical work. The critics of the aforementioned Pochwała Józefa Szymanowskiego completely overlooked a substantial part of it which could be recognized as the founding story of the organization conceived in the Prussian part of the partitioned Poland; one that was taking its first shaky steps in uncertain times when the situation in Europe and the rest of the world was changing on a daily basis. commented unearned praise of the translation of Świątynia Wenery w Knidos [Venus temple in Knidos] casts shadow on TPN’s entire biographical work.     Opis:
    The Łódź Christian Charity Association operated in Łódź in the years 1885-1940. Its origins go back to the year 1877 and are connected with the foundation of the first charity organization in Łódź called “Support Committee for the Poor” (Pol. abbr. KWB). The aim of the Committee, whose initiators recruited mainly from the circles of affluent bourgeoisie, was broadly understood care and social assistance addressed to the impoverished city residents. Membership fees and voluntary donations constituted a primary income source of the organization, although the funds were also raised through theatrical performances, concerts, balls and funds collections. At the onset of its activity, KWB disposed of the amount of almost 15 thousand ruble, collected among the citizens o f the city, whereas the list of the poor compiled in Łódź for the first time comprised 323 persons in need of immediate help. In 1880, the members of the Committee made a decision about the construction of a shelter for the poor, the old and the invalided persons, but the absence of an appropriate legislative act regulating the activity of the organization, prevented the realization of the project. The Statute of the organization was approved of in 1884 by tsar Alexander III. This event completes an eight-year period of operation of the Support Committee for the Poor. The main directions of social, fostering and educational activity laid out by KWB, were embraced by the Łódź Christian Charity Association, whose name was agreed upon in January 1885. A principal aim and task of the organization became eradication of street beggarhood in the city and granting financial support and aid in kind to the poor residents of Christian denomination. The realization of the laid-out aims was supposed to be achieved by opening institutions with expert knowledge in which the needy might find shelter, care, medical assistance and worthy occupation.

    The article presented recalls the 150th anniversary of foundation of Poznan Society for the Advancement of the Arts and Sciences (Pol. abbr. PTPN). In the time of national enslavement, it was the most important cultural and scholarly institution for the residents of the Prussian partition. It was also a substitute of a university, which the inhabitants of Poznan demanded so much. PTPN was a carrier of university ideas advocated by the most prominent people of Great Poland of that period: count Tytus Dzialynski, archbishop Leon Przyluski, the social activists: August Cieszkowski and Karol Libelt.

    Opis:
    The history of the Poles in the North Caucasus dates back to the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, but the presence of  Catholic priests in this region can only be spoken of at the beginning of the nineteenth century. At first Polish priests only made travels to the Caucasus, but later began to set up parishes to address the spiritual needs of the Poles exiled there. The pastoral activity of the priests was not limited to the sphere of the spirit, but also focused on material help. An important point of their activity was the construction of churches. They collected donations for this purpose themselves and were also constantly supported by the Russian authorities. They were not detracted in their endeavors by the repressions that followed in the wake of the Polish national uprisings or suspicion of proselytism.

    W artykule przedstawiono piśmiennictwo o tematyce sportowej, znajdujące się w zbiorach Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej w Poznaniu. Wskazano przede wszystkim na różnorodność tego piśmiennictwa, obejmującego zarówno wydawnictwa zwarte i ciągłe, jak też materiały biblioteczne należące do zbiorów specjalnych (dokumenty ikonograficzne oraz dokumenty życia społecznego). W artykule dokonano przeglądu piśmiennictwa z dziedziny sportu; omówiono kolejno: druki zwarte i czasopisma z księgozbioru Kaiser-Wilhelm-Bibliotek, pochodzące z lat 1898-1918, kolekcję przedwojennych widokówek i pocztówek sportowych, ilustrujących przede wszystkim działalność Towarzystwa Gimnastycznego „Sokół” w Poznaniu, oraz zbiór nekrologów sportowców, trenerów i działaczy sportowych z Poznania i Wielkopolski. Zawartość piśmiennictwa – z jednej strony – dotyczy wydarzeń sportowych i działalności związków sportowych w Niemczech i Wielkopolsce od końca XIX wieku do lat 30. XX wieku. Z drugiej strony – jest omówieniem kilku najbardziej popularnych dyscyplin sportowych, takich jak: gimnastyka, jazda konna, strzelectwo czy sport rowerowy. Zaprezentowane dokumenty służyły przede wszystkim propagowaniu kultury fizycznej w społeczeństwie niemieckim i polskim, a dziś są nieocenionym źródłem do historii sportu.
    The article presents writings related to sports subject matters that are currently held at Poznań University Library. The enormous variety of related material that includes both books and periodicals, as well as library materials from the special collection (iconographic material and social life documents), is identified and discussed. The article investigates various writings: books and periodicals from the collection of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Bibliothek from the years 1898-1918, a collection of pre-war picture post cards and picture post cards depicting sports events and activities that illustrate primarily the activities of Polskie Towarzystwo Gimnastyczne “Sokół” in Poznań (Polish Gymnastic Society “Falcon”) and a collection of sports obituaries, of coaches, referees and sports officials from Poznań and the Wielkopolska region. The contents of the material cover, on the one hand, sports events and the activities of sports organizations in Germany and the Wielkopolska region (from the end of the nineteenth century to the 1930s) and provide a discussion on a number of the most popular sports disciplines such as gymnastics, horse ridding, shooting and cycling on the other. The presented documents were used primarily in promoting physical culture within German and Polish population of the region and now provide invaluable source in the history of sports.

    Opis:
    Some of the most important principles of state ethnic policy are to ensure national and ethnic minorities possibility of continuing their national distinction and to enable them participation in public life, including political. The German minority residing in Poland, the most numerous among national minorities, participates actively in realization of the above-mentioned principles. The German minority is most numerous in Upper Silesia area where since 1990 the biggest minority organization in Poland, the Social-Cultural Society of Germans in Opole Silesia (TSKN), has been operating. The basic aim of this article was to make an attempt to describe TSKN activities in the aspect of Polish state ethnic policy assumptions. Research tools and methods used were: historical, comparative, statistical, source study and literature review. Essential research was also study of Internet sources, first and foremost Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration websites as well as TSKN websites. Research hypothesis had been formulated, according to which the Third Republic of Poland ethnic policy not only enable keeping national identity for the German minority living in the region of Opole Silesia, but also creates for the minority appropriate conditions to participate in public life of the region. As a result of research process above-mentioned hypothesis was verified positively.
    Jednymi z najważniejszych pryncypiów polityki etnicznej państwa jest zapewnienie mniejszościom narodowym i etnicznym możliwości zachowania własnej odrębności narodowej, a także umożliwienie im partycypacji w życiu publicznym, w tym – politycznym. Zamieszkująca Polskę mniejszość niemiecka, będąca najliczniejszą spośród mniejszości narodowych, czynnie uczestniczy w realizacji powyższych wytycznych. Występuje najliczniej na obszarze Górnego Śląska, gdzie od 1990 r. funkcjonuje największa instytucja mniejszościowa w kraju – Towarzystwo Społeczno-Kulturalne Niemców na Śląsku Opolskim (dalej TSKN). Podstawowym celem powstania niniejszego tekstu było podjęcie próby charakterystyki działalności TSKN w aspekcie założeń polityki etnicznej państwa polskiego. Wykorzystano następujące narzędzia i metody badawcze: historyczną, komparatystyczną, analizy źródeł i krytyki piśmiennictwa. Istotne miejsce wśród badań zajęła również analiza zasobów Internetu, przede wszystkim stron Ministerstwa Spraw Wewnętrznych i Administracji oraz witryn TSKN. Postawiono hipotezę badawczą, zgodnie z którą polityka etniczna III Rzeczpospolitej nie tylko umożliwia zachowanie tożsamości narodowej mniejszości niemieckiej zamieszkałej na Śląsku Opolskim, ale również stwarza jej odpowiednie warunki do uczestniczenia w życiu publicznym regionu. W wyniku przeprowadzonego procesu badawczego powyższa hipoteza została zweryfikowana pozytywnie.

    Artykuł omawia najważniejsze dokumenty związane z osobą i twórczością Zuzanny Ginczanki, zebrane w archiwach i bibliotekach: zarówno spuściznę poetki, jak i materiały wytworzone w miejscach i przez instytucje, z którymi była związana. Największa część spuścizny znajduje się w Muzeum Literatury im. Adama Mickiewicza w Warszawie, w tym młodzieńcze rękopisy, będące podstawą prac edytorskich. Zbiory warszawskiego muzeum i problemy edytorskie związane z rękopisami Ginczanki (i pierwodrukami jej wierszy oraz edycjami tej twórczości z lat 1953 i 1980) zostały omówione w pierwszych dwóch częściach tekstu. Następnie autorka opisała domniemaną historię rękopisu Ginczanki znalezionego w 2018 roku w Bibliotece Poznańskiego Towarzystwa Przyjaciół Nauk, wskazała materiały archiwalne do biografii poetki (w tym odnalezione w 2020 roku dokumenty złożone przez Zuzannę Gincburg w Wyższej Szkole Dziennikarskiej w Warszawie w roku 1935) oraz zasygnalizowała problem zaginionego rękopisu ostatniego wiersza poetki.
    The article entitled Zuzanna Ginczanka in archives and libraries discusses the most important documents on the poetess as well as the body of her poetic output. The remnants of her poetry that survived are currently held in various archives and libraries, along with items relevant to the literary heritage of the poetess and materials that were produced and preserved at those places and institutions she was attached to. The vast majority of her literary heritage is now preserved in the Adam Mickiewicz Literature Museum and includes, among others, her juvenile manuscripts that can provide a basis for further editorial works. The collections of the Warsaw museum and the editorial problems related to the Ginczanka’s manuscripts (as well as the first official editions of her poems and earlier editions of her collections of poems) are discussed in the first two sections of the article. Further, the author discusses the alleged history of Ginczanka’s manuscript found in the library of the Poznan Society of Friends of Sciences two years ago, indicates archival materials related to the biography of the poetess (including the documents handed over by Zuzanna Gincburg to the Higher School of Journalism in Warsaw in 1935 and found in 2020), and indicates a problem of the lost manuscript of the last poem written by Ginczanka.

    Książka składa się z ośmiu referatów, które zostały wygłoszone na konferencji naukowej poświęconej podsumowaniu i ocenie posoborowej mariologii w krajach języka niemieckiego. Pierwsza jej część, bardziej historyczna, prezentuje genezę, dzieje i główne osiągnięcia trzech ośrodków, które kształtują współczesne oblicze niemieckojęzycznej mariologii (Niemieckie Towarzystwo Mariologiczne, Międzynarodowe Koło Mariologiczne w Kevelaer, Instytut Marianum w Ratyzbonie). Druga jej część, bardziej teologiczna, obejmuje kwestie merytoryczne. Przybliża specyfikę mariologii Benedykta XVI i wiodących mariologów obszaru języka niemieckiego (np.: H. Menke, A. Ditrich, M. Hoffman, R. Hangler i G. Greshake), a także opisuje aktualną obecność wykładów z mariologii na katolickich fakultetach teologicznych Niemiec, Austrii i Szwajcarii.
    The book comprises eight papers which were presented at the scientific conference devoted to the summary and assessment of the postconciliar Mariology in German speaking countries. The first part, more historical, presents origins, history and the main achievements of the three centers which shape modern German speaking Mariology (German Mariological Associacion, International Mariological Society in Kevelaer, Marian Institute of Regensburg). The other part focuses on theological aspects. It discusses the specificity of Benedict XVI’s Mariology and that of the other leading Mariologists of German speaking areas (e.g. H. Menke, A. Ditrich, M. Hoffman, R. Hangler and G. Greshake), as well as describing the present-day occurrence of Mariological lectures in the Catholic theological faculties of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

    Prezentowana konferencja zorganizowana została przez Zespół ds. Inwentaryzacji Biblioteki Katedralnej w Gnieźnie przy Instytucie Historii Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu oraz Poznańskie Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Nauk. W artykule sprawozdawczym zreferowano tematykę 17 wystąpień konferencyjnych (z zakresu różnorodnych aspektów książki dawnej; z umiarkowaną przewagą zagadnień tegumentologicznych). W podsumowaniu konferencję oceniono bardzo pozytywnie, doceniono bardzo równy i wysoki poziom wystąpień oraz sporą liczbę ośrodków naukowych (Kraków, Lublin, Mińsk, Poznań, Słupsk, Tel Awiw, Toruń, Warszawa) i prelegentów biorących udział w spotkaniu (choć żaden z referentów nie reprezentował instytutu stricte bibliologicznego). Konferencji towarzyszyła wystawa okolicznościowa prezentująca zbiory specjalne Biblioteki PTPN (oprac. Michał Bartoszak i Wojciech Graś), ukazująca, jak kształtował się zasób tej biblioteki przez pryzmat jej najznamienitszych donatorów. 
    This year’s conference was organised by the Inventory Team of the Cathedral Library in Gniezno, attached to the Institute of History at Adam Mickiewicz University, and by the Poznań branch of the Poznań Society of Friends of Arts. The seventeen conference papers presented in this reporting article cover a variety of the problems and issues raised during the conference, encompassing a number of diverse aspects of old and rare books; this year with a slightly higher proportion of papers on book production and binding techniques and tegumentology. The conference was highly appraised for its scientific aptitude, while much appreciation was given to the overall high level of presentations given by the participants and the sheer number of participants, though none of the them represented an academic centre that was strictly involved in research on the history and science of books as physical objects, representing different research centres in Poland and abroad (Kraków, Lublin, Mińsk, Poznań, Słupsk, Tel Awiw, Toruń and Warszawa). The conference was accompanied by an exhibition presenting the special collections of the library of the PSFA (prepared by Michał Bartoszak and Wojciech Graś) documenting the history of the expansion of the resources of this library in the contexts of the donations made by its most notable donators.

    W niniejszym tekście charakteryzuję skrótowo działalność wydawniczą oraz publikacje (książki niewielkich rozmiarów i objętości, publikowane z comiesięczną częstotliwością) ukraińskiego Towarzystwa im. Michajła Kaczkowskiego w okresie pierwszych 10 lat jego funkcjonowania. Było to stowarzyszenie rusofilskie, działało w Galicji Wschodniej i realizowało zadania oświatowe na rzecz miejscowych Ukraińców (Rusinów), zarówno ze środowisk miejskich, jak i wiejskich. Główną formę wykonawczą stanowiło wydawanie i rozpowszechnianie broszur o nastawieniu popularyzatorskim. Autorami byli przeważnie amatorzy, ale tematyka była rozległa. Wkraczała w różne obszary wiedzy – w ujęciu popularnym i z zachętą do czytania.W początkach lat 80. XIX wieku zaostrzyła się na tych obszarach walka polityczna. Władze regionalne zaczęły silniej przeciwdziałać przedsięwzięciom rusofilskim, co miało wpływ również na stosowne wyprofilowanie edytorskiej działalności Towarzystwa. Znaczenie miał także wzrost środowiskowej aktywności społecznej oraz istotne powiększenie się publiczności czytającej. Nie bez wpływu pozostawała też oferta konkurencyjna ze strony innych organizacji oświatowych – ukraińskich oraz polskich.
    The present article briefly discusses the publishing activity and publications (small size books published on a regular monthly basis) of the Ukrainian Michal Kachkovsky Society within the first ten years of its existence. The society, explicitly engaged in the Ukrainian national interests and Russophile position, was operating in Eastern Galicia (Eastern Poland) and was engaged in educational work and supportive activities in the interest of the local Ukrainians (Ruthenians) from both city and rural environments. The main executive form of the society was to publish and promulgate popular brochures widely in accordance with the pursued agenda by the society. The authors of the brochures were mostly amateurs, thought the subjects raised were many and varied. The subjects included a number of different areas ofknowledge, popularised subject themes and encouraged further reading.At the beginning of the 1880s, domestic political struggle became inextricably connected with the political friction in the region. Regional authorities started to oppose more and more strongly any pro-Russian undertakings, which, accordingly, had its impact on the profile of the editorial activity of the Society. Yet another important factor enhancing the effects of the change in the attitude was the increase in the social activity of the population and the following significant increase in the number of readers. In addition, the offer proposed from other competitive educational organisations, both Polish and Ukrainian, had its own share in the resulting situation.
