Education in the Middle Ages
Opis:
The aim of the article is to present the beginnings and the subsequent development and evolution of church law in the sphere of education from the 4th to the beginning of the 16th century. The roots of the acts of law presented by the Popes, synods and councils were based on the traditions of Roman law, but a variety of reasons from the field of policy, economy and society led to the need to establish a church school system. The aim of the Church was to create an independent school system with its own purposes, different from civil schools. The article shows the main factors in the development of the legislation in the sphere of education and the functioning of the schools, and the relationship between civil and Church leaders. Another field of analysis is to search for the inspirations, aims and reception of the law in cathedral, collegiate, parish and monastic schools.

Opis:
The article discusses Polish-Latin bilingualism of Polish medieval legal texts and its impact on the shaping of the official language variant. The article presents constructions that, in their own structure of court oath, include a form of set and often repeated formulas. These are: the formula of initial oath (Tako mi pomoży Bog i święty krzyż [so help me God and the holy cross]) and the comparative construction indicating the membership of a social class of the participants of the events (tako dobry jako sam [as good as himself]) or the material value (tako dobry jako [as good as]). These constructions would appear in the Polish text in Latin, both in full or shortened form, or they would be part in Polish, part in Latin. The stable form of constructions that appeared in Latin as calques due to the influence of Polish indicates that they became, as a result of the domination of the Latin template, vivid markers of the official style in medieval Polish.

The paper addresses the issue of the origins of the town of Poznań founded in mid-13th century under German law. The birth of the charter town on the left bank of the Warta river is illustrated first and foremost by sources: documents from the mid-13th century, particularly a location charter of 1253, and narrative sources, e.g. The Wielkopolska Chronicle and yearly records written in Wielkopolska. The town was the work of Przemysł I, the duke of Wielkopolska, who sorted out property issues on the left bank of the Warta, made grants and granted privileges, erected his new castle next to the new town, and together with his brother Bolesław issued a location charter in 1253. The duke’s action resulted in the rise of one of the most important urban centers in medieval Poland.

This  work  deals  with  the  problem  of  intersemiotics  in  Orthodox  Slavonic  culture  in  the Middle Ages. Attention here is focused on the source, essence and ontology of correspondence of the arts. Despite the fact that in the Middle Ages word and image (icons, frescos, miniatures of manuscripts) had completely different specificity of signs, they were connected with each other on a different level of perception. According to the Church Fathers (John of Damascus, Maximus the Confessor, Basil the Great) and East Christian mysticism (Pseudo Dionysius the Areopagite), the art of the written word and visual art had the same aim and function,  because  they  referred  to  eternal  and  spiritual reality  and  to  the  divine  archetype. The ontology of the word and icon was linked to the specific version of Pseudo-Dionysius’ symbolism. Moreover, this symbolism is connected with the term – “paradigmatical image”, functioning beyond text and iconography, in the iconosphere of the Orthodox Middle Ages. Paradigmatical image becomes a specific link between a word and an icon. Of course, paradigmatical images  were  created  on  the  basis  of  Biblical  (and/or  apocryphal)  and  Patristic Byzantine texts, although they started to function  regardless of their original context. This work presents the way paradigmatical images function in Orthodox iconography and literature (the Raising of Lazarus, the Last Judgement, the Trinity).

Many years of excavation works in the gord in Międzyrzecz have resulted in discovering the remains of three small glass workshops from the second half of the 10th century, the second half of the 11th century and the 13th century. The scarce and typically scattered sources have made it possible to identify the workshops’ nature and, to a very limited extent, the products manufactured there. The discovery included pieces of large and small crucibles, waste from the preliminary stage of glass melting. Most probably, low-alkaline potassium glass was produced there

Opis:
The goal of the article is to provide a description of grammar and vocabulary-related differences in the fragments of Our Father in Polish medieval songs (until the 16th century). The fragments introduced into the texts are processed to varying degrees, from being quoted, to modified or involving a free reference to the Pater Noster. Modification was the most frequently employed form. There were four major types of modifications: lexical exchange, change in word order, adding an element and removing an element. This also indicated the reasons for introducing the changes: some of them stem from the way in which the excerpts were introduced into the text (formal changes), some are intentional (application of specific forms) and affected the form of the artistic song (rhyme, rhythm, phonaesthetics). The lack of stability of the adopted fragments is also related to the way song operated as an oral form, making it vulnerable to a variety of transpositions. At the same time, however, with all these modifications, one element remained unchanged: the expression from evil which became one of the “theological and poetic formulas” used in Polish religious poetry of the Middle Ages.

The statutes of the vicars of the Gniezno cathedral were composed at the turn of the 15th and 16th century and were in their entirety drawn up by the chapter on 22 June 1499. It was the initiative of Archbishop Fryderyk Jagiellończyk, who was concerned about an unsatisfactory functioning of the College. The initiative was carried out by Klemens from Piotrków, doctor decretalium, a Gniezno canon. On 9 December 1500 the statutem were authorized by Cardinal Fryderyk Jagiellończyk with the chapter and he commanded to have them entered in the matrica capitulari. The statutes survivedto our time in a copy made in the 1720s. Description of offenses and the system of punishments in the statues reveal the daily matters and some of the deficiencies of the College: absence from liturgical ministry, drunkenness, quarrels, irregularities of the officium Divinum, careless celebration of choral prayer, conversations and jokes during chants, drowsiness.
