    Polish literature has been present in China since 1906. The first Polish literary text translated into Chinese was Latarnik (The Lighthouse Keeper) by Henryk Sienkiewicz. Contemporary fans of Polish novella and novel were reading indirect translations since the Chinese novelists, who did not speak Polish, usually based their translations on the Japanese versions. In my years of contact with Chinese culture and literature, I have never come across any mention of translations of Polish or Eastern European children’s literature. Once I started my research into this subject, I quickly learned what caused the lack of information on it. It turned out that it was quite difficult to find any credible information on what has been translated, in what volume it was published and what the reactions of young readers were.As a result, this article is merely an introduction to the research on Polish children’s literature in People’s Republic of China and focuses almost exclusively on latest publications, i.e. released in the twenty-first century. To a significant extent, it is based on data collected from people actively participating in promoting Polish culture in China via email. I received a lot of valuable data from Wojciech Widłak – one of the authors whose children’s books were published in China. The article is practically a short catalogue of books published on the Chinese market, but it also presents the few reviews I have managed to find in Chinese sources. There is also a presentation of the translators and it is worth noting that Polish children’s literature has been taken care of by the best among those studying Polish literature in China. I hope that this article will be the first of many on the position, popularity and reception of Polish children’s literature in China.

    Termin Homiego Bhabhy „necessary fictions” objawił polskim sympatykom teorii postkolonialnej Dariusz Skórczewski w polemice z Niesamowitą Słowiańszczyzną Marii Janion, nie zgadzając się z zaproponowaną przez badaczkę krytyką roli chrześcijaństwa w kształtowaniu polskiej tożsamości narodowej. Bhabha przekonuje, że istnieje inna droga reprezentacji podmiotu kolonialnego niż ta ufundowana na splocie realizmu i historyzmu – taka, która zakłada, że rzeczywistość nie jest „dana”, lecz „stworzona”, w oparciu o krytykę reprezentacji. „Necessary fiction” jest rodzajem „wytwarzania tradycji” osadzonej w historycznym, a także historycznoliterackim i kulturowym continuum. Wytycza obiektywny porządek rzeczy – tak historycznie, jak kulturowo – i w tym sensie opowiada o rzeczywistości, a nawet ją projektuje. Autorka przyjrzy się trzem sposobom konstruowania takiej fikcji ciągłości w polskiej literaturze i krytyce literackiej po 1989 roku: tropom słowiańskim, tropom sarmackim oraz dyskusji nad współmiernością przełomów politycznych 1918 i 1989 roku.Składnik „necessary fictions” –nakaz dziedziczenia postaw światopoglądowych – przestrzega Bhabha, może skutkować nie tylko ograniczeniem refleksji nad literaturą do kwestii pozaestetycznych, ale także zakonserwowaniem resentymentalnego kompleksu Zachodu.
    The term „necessary fiction” was presented to the Polish postcolonial theory followers by Dariusz Skórczewski in his polemic with Niesamowita Słowiańszczyzna by Maria Janion. He disagreed with Janion's vision of the role  of Christianity in forming the Polish national identity. Bhabha argues that there is another way of presenting the postcolonial subject than the one founded on the combination of realism and historicism the one, that assumes reality as given, but created on the basis of the criticism of representation. Necessary fiction is a way of „creating the tradition” based on historical, literary historical and cultural continuity. It shows the objective order of things – historically and culturally – and in this way it describes the reality and even designs it. The author observes three way of constructing such a fiction of continuity in the Polish prose and literary criticism after 1989: the Slavonic trail, the Sarmatian trail and the discussion about the similarities between political breakthroughs of 1918 and 1989. Bhabha warns that the component of „necessary fictions” – the imperative to pass down the values – may result not only with limiting literary criticism to nonaesthetic questions, but also with preserving the resentimental, Western complex.

    The article provides a comparative analysis of Joanna Bator’s Cloudalia and Sandra Cisneros’ Caramelo with regard to similar identity construction of the main female characters. Both authors concentrate on young women (Dominika Chmura in Cloudalia and Celaya Reyes in Caramelo) who set out for a journey of feminist self-discovery, crossing the boundaries of geography, history and culture. The author of the article argues that, despite the obvious differences between Poland and Mexico, the protagonists rebel against the same legacy of the Catholic patriarchal culture, reinforced by national visions of history and literary canon in the respective countries, and they gradually manage to rework historical trauma by reconstructing the doppelganger figure and creating new transcultural feminist paradigms. The arguments are reinforced not only by references to autobiographical motives in Bator’s and Cisneros’ fiction and diaries, but also by transnational identity studies of Zygmunt Bauman and Amaryll Chanady.
    Artykuł jest analizą komparatystyczną dwóch współczesnych powieści, Chmurdalii Joanny Bator i Caramelo Sandry Cisneros, uwzględniającą podobieństwo w konstrukcji tożsamości głównych postaci kobiecych. Obie autorki koncentrują się na młodych kobietach (Joanna Bator na Dominice Chmurze, a Sandra Cisneros na Celayi Reyes), które wyruszają w podróż umożliwiającą im feministyczne samopoznanie poprzez przekraczanie granic geograficznych, historycznych i kulturowych. Autorka artykułu udowadnia, że pomimo oczywistych różnic pomiędzy Polską a Meksykiem, bohaterki Bator i Cisneros buntują się przeciwko temu samemu dziedzictwu katolickiej kultury patriarchalnej w swoich krajach ojczystych, zbudowanemu wokół nacjonalistycznych wizji historii i kanonu literackiego. Stopniowo autorkom Chmurdalii i Caramelo udaje się przepracować traumę historyczną poprzez rekonstrukcję figury doppelgangera i wypracowanie transkulturowej tożsamości feministycznej. Autorka artykułu wykorzystuje nie tylko odniesienia do motywów autobiograficznych w prozie Bator i Cisneros, ale również transnarodowe teorie tożsamości autorstwa Zygmunta Baumana i Amaryll Chanady.

    Adam Wiśniewski-Snerg (1937-1995) was a Polish science fiction writer. In his novel Robot (1973), he made an attempt at a literary visualization of a machine acquiring human identity. In this article I would like to follow the ethical consequences of such situations in created literary worlds. It is worth remembering, however, that these artistic worlds often serve to test non-literary reality. In his novel, Wiśniewski-Snerg also dealt with the problem of human feelings (e.g. moral dilemmas) in a thinking machine, which is formed in the image and likeness of a human being. Such literary reflection is valuable, partly because it enters into an interesting dialogue with the work of Bruno Schulz (1892- 1942), one of the most important Polish writers of the 20th century. It is also one of the first attempts in Polish literature to address the issue of sentient machines, and is a kind of preview of contemporary dilemmas connected with the work on the creation of artificial intelligence. An example of such a dilemma is the issue of the sentient machine’s perception of the tasks imposed on it by the human-constructor. Perhaps it will start to experience them as a kind of unethical oppression. In Wiśniewski-Snerg’s writing this problem of is, of course, expressed in a metaphorical way.

    The article is devoted to the Polish reception of science-fiction cinema; the statements of film critics from 1956–1965 were analysed. During this period, science fiction, previously absent from the screens of Polish cinemas for ideological and censorship reasons, returned to the repertoire and became the subject of press discussions and reviews. The analysis of articles devoted to this genre and published at the time allows reconstruction of the cultural context in which science-fiction productions operated. The article consists of three main parts. In the first of these, the author describes which science fiction films were present in Polish cinemas at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. In the second part, he analyses press statements devoted to the history and aesthetics of the genre. The subject under consideration in the third part is the reception of two productions, which at the time enjoyed the greatest interest from contemporary critics: Godzilla (Gojira, 1954, dir. Ishirō Honda) and The Silent Star (Der schweigende Stern 1960, dir. Kurt Maetzig).

    This paper examines the position of contemporary Scottish crime fiction in the Polish polysystem. It investigates the definition of tartan noir and the challenges the genre poses in translation.Such concerns seem especially valid in the case of Denise Mina in whose Paddy Meehan series, next to the female protagonist, one of the most important characters is the city of Glasgow with its menacing architecture and the coarse language of its inhabitants. Thus the second part of this paper analyses the Polish translations of Mina’s trilogy in order to show how the dialect and other culture-specific items have been dealt with by two Polish translators.

    Gromadzenie i udostępnianie literatury beletrystycznej w bibliotekach uniwersyteckich jest sprawą oczywistą, bowiem tego typu literatura jest warsztatem pracy określonej grupy naukowców i studentów uniwersytetów. Statutowego obowiązku gromadzenia beletrystyki nie mają natomiast specjalistyczne biblioteki techniczne, medyczne, rolnicze, ekonomiczne, wojskowe, niemniej w niektórych z nich jest ona dostępna. W artykule omówione zostaną: proweniencja księgozbiorów beletrystycznych w akademickich bibliotekach specjalistycznych, zainteresowanie beletrystyką ze strony użytkowników, sposoby udostępniania i pozyskiwania nowości, źródła finansowania.
    Acquisition and circulation of fiction in academic and university libraries is fully justified and requires no explanation as this kind of literature provides valuable source material for study to researchers and students alike. In contrast, specialist technical, medical agricultural, economic and military libraries have no statutory obligation to collect fiction, even though some of them do make this literature available in their collections. The present article discusses the following: provenance of library fiction book collections in academic specialist libraries, interest in fiction shown by their library patrons, methods for circulating fiction and acquisition of new titles and sources of funding.

    Krzysztof Kieślowski and Ingmar Bergman belonged to different generations of film authors, but there was a certain artistic kinship between them. They were both interested in issues related to human existence, but their films also seem similar in terms of their aesthetic dimensions, in particular, their cinematographic style. Both directors also created films deriving from their private experience, often creating characters on screen who seem to be in some respect their alter egos. This articles deals with various similarities between the cinema of Kieślowski and Bergman.

    In his master’s thesis, Documentary Film and Reality, Krzysztof Kieślowski dealt with a number of problems that turned out to play a vital role in his future film career, and its documentary period in particular. This range of topics includes the concept of ‘the dramaturgy of reality’, one of the methods for factual filmmaking he intended to put into practice, but also such ideas as the relation between film and literature, between documentary film and ethics, and the difference between reportage and documentary filmmaking. These concepts had an influence on his documentary filmmaking andled him to develop other concepts and methods for documentary filmmaking. From the perspective of Kieślowski’s creative oeuvre, the thesis Documentary Film and Reality reads as a manifesto by the young filmmaker.

    The Methodological Problems of Studies on the History of Polish Postwar Documentary The author discusses the narratives and stereotypical (ideological) point of view as a matrix for constructing an overly simple image of the Polish documentary in the postwar period (1944–1955) as shadowed in the untruth of political discourse. In Marek Hendrykowski’s opinion this particular period in Polish documentary film was much more complicated and multi perspectived (in a “dialogical” sense) as a research object posing new questions and opening new perspectives for film historians.
