Opis:
The category of the Ethico-Aesthetics, introduced by Søren Kierkegaard, was applied to the study of Byzantine Philosophy by the Greek philosopher and theologian Nikolaos Matsoukas (1934–2006). Matsoukas vehemently rejected the identification of Byzantine philosophy with a strict Christian moralism. Rather, he viewed it as an ethos which did not lead the ascetics to display Manichean contempt for the body. It was thus a kind of ‘mild asceticism’. This ethical acceptance of the body turns against Neoplatonic speculation and cultivates the habitus that leads to artistic creativity. Byzantine philosophy is thus situated at the midpoint between nominalism and realism, but standing against the realism of the archetypal ideas. The paper concludes with some considerations on the pragmatics of Byzantine philosophy in a Christian world.

In late antiquity, in the context of the jagged tradition of Neo-Platonism,Aristotle’s Metaphysics and the specific science that is traced out in itare indicated with the current denominations of meta ta physika andtheologikē pragmateia, which are seen as consistent with one anotherand closely interconnected. In this connection, the Metaphysics, in thewake of previous philosophical readings, is considered as a treatise on“theological science” - the most elevated among the sciences - and thedenomination meta ta physika is seen in a specifically theological sense.According to a widespread Neo-Platonic reading, the science thematizedin the Metaphysics is “metaphysics” in that it is theological science,an epistemic discourse on divine realities, which, within the ordo rerum, transcend the physical ones, and, therefore, according to the ordo cognoscendi, must be studied after the latter.

Opis:
Vladimir Ern is often seen as a philosopher that focused mainly on defining the characteristic featuresof Russian philosophy. When his philosophical works are interpreted in such a way, the biggeststress is being put on the fact that he formulated a certain idea of national philosophy, which wasthen transformed by him into a kind of national ideology during the World War I. The article triesto show, that Ern should be treated first of all as an author who considered metaphilosophical issues(and that this fact distinguishes him from the majority of the philosophers of Russian religiousphilosophicalrenaissance, who were mainly interested in solving the metaphysical issues). He focusedon metaphilosophy because he was convinced, that philosophy is a field of the battle between twonotions of the essence of philosophical knowledge which exclude one another. Seen as such, hisphilosophy should be interpreted as an attempt to find a proper way in philosophy and to rejectthe wrong way. The authentic way, which gives a correct answer to the question concerning theessence of philosophical knowledge, was seen by him in Christian Platonism. He tried to show, thatin the works of Plato can be found a certain theory of the spiritual development of man, whichis at the same time a genuine epistemology that shows the way of true philosophical knowledge.

Opis:
The article discusses the coexistence of two forms of Christian mysticism – metaphysical and relational – in The Book of Angela of Foligno. The metaphysical type, associated with the Neoplatonic philosophy, is probably inspired by The Soul’s Journey Into God by Saint Bonaventure who describes the experience of God as viewing existence or being (esse). The relational type is focused on the human and personal aspect of Jesus and the experience of love in the I-You relationship. While in many medieval mystics there is only one type of mysticism (e.g. metaphysical in Eckhart, relational in Bernard of Clairvaux), in Angela there is an interesting coexistence of both these types of experience of God.

Opis:
The most important and enduring input of Middle Platonism is the way it unveiled the fascinating depths of human nature in its supernatural dimension, and its greatest secrets, including the most important and most sacred mystery of human love, which is the initiation into divinity itself. The discovery of the supernatural dimension of the human nature enforced a change from materialistic life preferences to spiritual ones — it was the consequence of accepting the supernatural aspects of human existence, but also, above all, it revealed its fascinating and mysterious depth in which divinity itself is both hidden and somehow exposed (although only to those who are initiated). Middle Platonic philosophers returned to Platonic postulates: “follow God” and “imitate to God,” which replaced the Stoic “live in accordance with nature” and “follow nature.” In the eyes of the Platonics, the new direction of human ethical development was to be found in imitating the transcendent and incorporeal divinity.

Opis:
The article compares the understanding of self-knowledge of the mind in Tibetan Buddhism (in the schools of Mahamudra and Dzogchen) with the ancient, PlatonicChristian philosophy. It argues that in both traditions there are two aspects of the experience of self-knowledge: the impossibility of grasping the mind as an object and theceaseless, unavoidable awareness of the mind’s cognitive activity. The fi rst of those aspects is called by the Tibetan tradition “emptiness”, while the second – lucidity ofthe mind’s nature. In Gregory of Nyssa and Augustine of Hippo we can see a diff erence of accent in terms of the signifi cance of those two motifs, but it seems that bothphilosophers understand self-knowledge in a very similar way. Recognizing those two aspects is what brings the Buddhist and the Western traditions close to each other, while a fundamental diff erence between them lies in the fact that in the latter, selfknowledge of the mind opens a path to the experience of the infi nite mind of God, ofwhich the fi rst is an image, while in Buddhism the concept of God does not appear at all. Individual self-knowledge is treated as the experience of the nature of one, universaland absolute mind.

Opis:
The article analyzes Rozmyślania sandomierskie (Sandomierz Meditations) by Kasper Drużbicki, a 17th century Jesuit. The text, which was probably read out during a monastic retreat, borders on homiletics and mystical writing. The author of the present article interprets it through the prism of strongly marked elements of Platonic and Neoplatonic tradition and tries to reconstruct the spiritual, philosophical and linguistic phenomena occurring at the interface of the physical and metaphysical spheres, among others the way symbols function, the shaping of the semantics of words, instability of the category of time, mutual permeation and complementation of the fields of esthetics and anesthetics. There are numerous references to philosophical writings and contemporary contexts within the theory of literature but their purpose is not so much to bring out factographical or historical dependencies or the existence of conscious intertextual references but rather to provide a detailed and multifaceted depiction of the main themes of Drużbicki’s work also in an attempt to elicit on these grounds certain general regularities in the history of human thought and religion.
