Cosplay is a poorly understood phenomenon related to popular culture. Currently, however, it is slowly attracting the interest of an increasing number of fields of science, such as sociology, psychology or pedagogy. The following article will present the theoretical foundations and research on the role of cosplay in the life of female cosplayers. Focusing on the subjects, I touched upon the issues of interpersonal interactions, interests and skills, social perception of cosplay, problems related to the preparation of costumes, and the impact of cosplay on identity development.

The paper is a short theoretical summary of relationships between the notions of nation, gender and sexuality in a nationalistic discourse. It is also an attempt at applying this knowledge for analyzing selected artifacts of pop culture. In the first part of the paper, theoretical and research findings on the constructs of gender and sexuality in a nationalistic discourse are presented. In the second part these findings are used for a discursive analysis of gender and sexuality constructs in selected songs / stage acts presented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 and a pastiche cover version of one of them.

In the article the author examines fantastic novels by contemporary Polish writers (Andrzej Maleszka, Paweł Beręsowicz, Rafał Kosik and other) for young readers in a cultural context. In his essay he uses two well-known cultural categories “myth” and “magic” to his analysis of fantastic novels. According to the author, the myth and magic have two important functions in fantastic children’s literature. First, they lead young readers to knowledge about the world and depict different, complex phenomena of cultural dimension. Second, the myth and magic create a particular space (what “engulfs” young readers) of play and entertainment. Moreover, the myth and magic attract young readers to fabulous worlds including the elements of realistic literary convention. Thereby the writers increase their credibility among the youth. A “myth-magic” in the presented word of contemporary Polish fantastic novels assures balance between incredible entertainment represented by wizards, witches, dragons and the real world with characters having various digital devices within reach.

Gajewska Grażyna, Cyborgi – literacko-filmowe figury dyskursu interaktywnego [Cyborgs – Literary and Film Figures of Interactive Discourse]. „Przestrzenie Teorii” 32. Poznań 2019, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 179–196. ISSN 1644-6763. DOI 10.14746/pt.2019.32.9. The author analyzes the figure of the cyborg in science fiction literature and film. The text begins by showing this kind of literary work in the theoretical field and presents it as an interactive discourse. The author describes the scientific roots of constructing a human-technical hybrid, emphasizing the ideological and political context of this research. In this approach, the cyborg appears as a participant in and also a hostage of the Cold War. Next, the author finds literary and film creations of cyborgs inspired by this political and military heritage. The article also presents alternative images of cyborgs co-creating a feminist and postcolonial discourse. They were also included in specific policies and strategies aimed at deconstructing concepts such as sex and gender, sexuality, race, nation, social class. The main thesis of the article is that as fictitious and real entities, cyborgs are prone to ideologization and burdened with the obligation to politicize. Therefore, when studying cyborgs in literature, film and comics, we must ask what ideologies and politicians they serve.

The article is concerned with the works of Polish female comic book artists. I advance the thesis that in their artistic work harbours autobiographical elements which constitute an important element of the whole. I begin the article by clarifying certain notions, namely women's, feminist and autobiography as they may be ambiguously construed. Also, the works in which such autobiographical themes are present are divided into three focus groups: 1. Revisionist representation of history, 2. Emotions, sex life, motherhood, 3. Relations of women with the world, the family, and oneself.

Kryzys religii we współczesnym społeczeństwie, kryzys tradycji chrześcijańskiej w rodzinie i życiu codziennym unaocznił nam nie tylko potrzebę wyrazistego świadectwa chrześcijańskiego we współczesnym świecie, lecz także wagę wychowania religijnego młodych pokoleń. Jego celem jest otworzyć dzieci - za pomocą historii, obrazów, pieśni i modlitw - na religijny wymiar naszego życia i uczynić je zdolnymi do mówienia i działania w tym obszarze, do stawiania pytań, percepcji, rozumienia, interpretacji, wchodzenia w siebie i wychodzenia ku innym.Owo dziecięce „mówienie religijne” i praktyka religijnego działania przyjmują zawsze określoną postać kulturową, dlatego też teologia dziecięca może być ujmowana jako kulturowa forma teologii. Ponieważ często odwołuje się ona do popkultury, wykorzystując jej ikony, kody, wytwory i przekładając prawdy wiary na jej język, można jej także nadać miano popteologii.
The crisis of the Christian tradition in contemporary societies revealed, among other things, the importance of religious education of the young generation. Recently in this area a demand has occurred to treat children, during conversations with them about God, as fully fledged theologians doing so-called child theology. This term is interpreted in three ways: as children`s own theological reflection, as the act of doing childish theology by adults with children and as theology for children (a clarification of academic theology). Nevertheless child theology can be regarded as theology only in a broad sense, as a way of understanding and practicing the faith. Therefore it is practical theology, namely a programme of Christian education in which a child is considered an agent of religious and educational actions. Since doing this childish theology with doing religious actions always takes the specific cultural form, child theology can be recognised also as a cultural form of theology. And because it draws upon co-called pop-culture, it can be called pop-theology as well.

The article shows an example of classroom work in junior high school with Milosz’s and Szymborska’s poems about war. The comparative analysis and different interpretations of its extensions in the work with poetic texts is dealt here in the presence of military themes in popular culture. "Reading through a magnifying glass" can induce a young receiver to a more vigilant behavior in relation to the images of war offered also by Polish cinema.

The subject of analyses are issues of research undertaken in scientific publications by Zbyszko Melosik from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the content of which is of key significance to reforms in paedagogical sciences after the year 1989 in Poland, as well as to the understanding of international and domestic value of the cooperation of this scientist with academic circles. It is also an example of the establishment and evolution of the Poznań research school in culture, comparative and general paedagogy. They indicate a clear union between the conditions of socioculturaland education studies in light of the assumptions of post-modernism and critical paedagogy and the richness of sources by this author, connecting Polish paedagogical thought with the world discourse on socialisation and broadly understood education.

The article analyses currently emerging patterns of womanhood in the socio-cultural context. The author, using the feminist discourse, attempts to answer the following questions: What positive changes (based on the idea of gender equality) had taken place in terms of how the pattern of womanhood is culturally constructed? Are there still such areas in the contemporary model of woman’s life, where we observe certain forms of discrimination, based on a stereotypical attitude (in both: biological and cultural sense) towards gender issues? The author, by adopting the gender perspective, analyses fundamental areas in women’s lives: professional career and private life, to verify the level of their social (re)construction. Her reflection is also enriched with ponderings about the place of womanhood in popular culture. Through references to numerous research findings taken from the professional literature (mostly Polish), she tries to demonstrate that there are two opposing forces that influence womanhood: the first one bases on the mechanism of stereotyping and gender discrimination (determined by the essentialistic perspective) and the second one promotes equality discourse (determined by the perspective of social constructivism). In conclusion, the author makes the assumption, that contemporary patterns of womanhood balance on the line between two worlds, in which deeply rooted tradition (conditioned by the biological determinism) coexists with modern egalitarianism. The specific discrepancy between outer and inner (self)perception of the social and professional roles women play causes many dilemmas and forces them to make difficult decisions in life.

The text is an attempt to analyze the evolution of aesthetic forms and motifs discussed on the example of the so-called “great figure” The Last Supper – the starting point for the analysis of the motif is the photography of David La Chapelle of the series: Jesus is my homeboy. Significant here is the context theory of parody by Linda Hutcheon – understood as a central point overview of contemporary art – a phenomenon combining fidelity to tradition and contemporary ideas of creative freedom, to express, among others, in need of confrontation with the ‘classic’ conventions – encroaching and deconstructive also in our contemporary pop-cultural processes of “image-consumption”.

This article is dedicated to the idea of pop-nationalism and the connection between popular culture and how its productions (re)construct the American sense of national identity. The study is divided into subsections that delve into topics such as national identity in the current, fragmented social reality, the role of films in propagating American values during times of major socio-political crises, and the concept of banal nationalism according to Michael Billig. To analyze the elements of discourse, three films were chosen – Rocky IV (dir. Sylvester Stallone, 1985), Top Gun (dir. Tony Scott, 1986), and American Sniper (dir. Clint Eastwood, 2014). The research findings indicate that Hollywood films have a significant impact on building and reinforcing a sense of national pride and belonging in American society. Pop-nationalism is often used for entertainment purposes but also as a propaganda tool, especially during periods of international conflicts and political tensions.

The author presents poetry by Kamila Janiak in the context of avant-guard pop-culture. She deals mainly with punk and cyber-punk motifs of this poetry, which alow to understand them as a feminist, post-human and anty-capitalist project. She shows how Janiak for her purposes uses d.tournements: she takes on the one hand principles, which rule in the “controlled societies” and on the other hand pop-culture aesthetics and psychodelic rock music.
