The article aims to show the issue of educational travels of noble youth in the modern era. The source is the correspondence of Jakub Dunin from his journeys around Europe in 1699–1703, addressed to father Franciszek Świętosław. The mentioned letters (stored in the National Archives in Krakow in the Tomkowicz Archive from Kobiernice) provide important information referring to the reasons for travelling, travel expenses and the companions. Particularly noteworthy are colorful descriptions of the social life lived in European manors. For example, the author visited Versailles of Louis XIV and provided a detailed description of various ceremonies and court entertainment. Foreign journeys posed an opportunity to learn about foreign cultures, political systems or armies. This encouraged nobility sons’ reflections which they shared with relatives back in Poland. As a result, the travel correspondence abounds in individual interpretations, for example, of the then political developments on the international arena. When confronted with facts, they add extra value to the publication.

The text starts with a short introduction. Then the concept of place is defined and its inherent characteristics are described: its symbolism, multi-sided nature and multidisciplinary connotations. Afterwards the principles of place-based pedagogy are presented and it’s eclectic character is pointed out. Then, attempt explain idea of the memorial sites from the standpoint of history and pedagogy. In the final part the author relates to educational potential of (national) memorial sites and takes a stance on the role of memorial sites in citizenship education.

Opis:
Zygmunt Krasiński, the most European of the Polish Romantic writers, composed many literary texts influenced by foreign travels. In his writing, specific geographical spaces were transformed at once into places of imagination and places of intimacy, forming a unique sphere of auto/bio/geo/graphy. This is especially noticeable in Krasiński’s poetic prose written in French, mainly in the half-private and half-literary travel impressions of his excursions in the Alps. The tension between a place of imagination and a place of intimacy is also reflected in the poet’s correspondence, which can be analysed as a textual form of interiorization of the strictly defined places. It is shown in the article on the examples of the Alps and Provence.

The paper examines the memoir The Book of My Lives by Bosnian-American writer Aleksandar Hemon. This non-fiction work explores the author’s childhood in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina before the collapse of Yugoslavia, and then his exile experience in Canada and the United States after the outbreak of the war. Through the prism of memory, the book deals with the subject of exiles, uprootedness and efforts to start a new life in a new environment. Being an autobiographical record, The Book of My Lives lends itself to the examination of the issue of exile and memory issues, which is one of the two themes of this paper. The second concerns the understanding of the relationship between memory and space. The paper seeks to show how the spatial dimension is also important for the creation of memory because memories represent an essential factor for the transformation of abstract space into a particular place.

The article describes thirteen folk (unscientific) etymologies of eleven place names included in Romuald Fryderowicz’s 2013 book Podania i legendy pomorskie zebrane w latach 1914–1922 [Pomeranian legends collected in the years 1914–1922]. A folk etymology is defined as ‘scientifically incorrect explanation of the origins of a word based on the similarity of its form to other words or other casual associations’.The analysed pseudo‑etymologies concern the following place names: Borkowo, Górzno, Osie, Przechowo, Rudki, Tleń, Tuchola, Warzno, Wysin, Zawory and Zblewo; the book  devotes two pseudo-etymologies to Tuchola and Wysin each. Some of these pseudo etymologies come from a field exploration, but as much as seven of them occur to be pseudo-scientific. The author uses this term for unprofessional (contrary to onomastic methodology) explanations of the structure and meaning of a word using the research results of various scientific disciplines, especially history.

The article discusses urban place names in Łódź in three historical period when Poland was not independent: during the partitions, the First World War, and the Second World War. The analysis focused on ways of German and Russian intervention into urban place naming in Łódź. It describes naming techniques (translations of Polish names, adaptations to foreign phonetic and writing systems, renaming) and the goals of foreign intervention into Polish place naming. The conclusion is that Russian and German interventions during the partitions and the first world war were mainly aimed at cultural assimilation, and consisted in use of Russified and Germanized forms. During the Second World War, on the other hand, Germans were consistently instilling elements of Nazi-German culture and history in place names.

The subject of the paper is a cultural analysis of the phenomenon of work in public space. The conditions of work and its consequences for spatial planning are described. Based on the contemporary urban reality, the growing difficulty of separating work from leisure using traditional criteria, which also affects individual persons, is shown, as it frequently becomes a source of social unrest leading in consequence to various separating practices, or attempts to delineate once again the borders between those two spheres of life. A concept of an open city is also presented, as it constitutes a counterweight to the approach of a functional balance that has been in use so far. Further, examples of relevant contemporary trends in urban development have been offered. Selected issues related to such planning prospects have also been considered. The paper serves as a certain address to architects, urging them to design public place in a manner that accounts for the current transformations in the dynamics and form of work, as a chance for a city to regenerate, reducing at the same time the negative consequences of the permeation of work and leisure, which brings about a threat that social inequalities will simply increase and the vision of even greater social inequalities and exclusion.
Przedmiotem artykułu jest kulturowa analiza fenomenu pracy w przestrzeni publicznej. Autor rozpatruje jego uwarunkowania i konsekwencje dla planowania przestrzennego. Na przykładzie współczesnych zjawisk miejskich zwraca uwagę na rosnącą trudność w oddzieleniu od siebie pracy i czasu wolnego za pomocą tradycyjnych kryteriów, z którą borykać się muszą także same jednostki: stanowi ona dla nich źródło niepokojów oraz w konsekwencji prowadzi do rozmaitych praktyk separowania – prób ponownego wytyczenia granic między tymi dwoma dziedzinami życia. W artykule przywołana jest również koncepcja miasta otwartego, stanowiąca potencjalną przeciwwagę dla dotychczasowych ujęć opartych na balansie funkcjonalnym, a także podano przykłady aktualnych trendów urbanistycznych, które się w nią wpisują. Rozważono również wybrane zagrożenia, które wiążą się z taką perspektywą planistyczną. W tekście zawarto także rodzaj apelu do architektów, w zamyśle autora zachęcający, by przestrzeń publiczną projektować tak, aby uwzględniać obecne przemiany w dynamice i formie pracy, stanowiące szansę na witalizowanie miasta, ale jednocześnie ograniczać negatywne skutki przenikania się pracy i odpoczynku, które grozi powiększeniem społecznych nierówności oraz wykluczeniem.

The aim of this study was to explore the subject of place attachment and connected factors (such as social trust, attachment style and anxiety) in the context of enforced isolation caused by world pandemic COVID-19. For this purpose a longitudinal study was conducted, in the first part of which 127 people were examined, and 35 in second. During the survey were used: Place Attachment Scale, General Trust Scale, Relationship Questionnaire, and STAI -X1 Questionnaire. The study confirmed the negative relationship between place attachment and anxiety: the higher the level of anxiety, the lower the strength of place attachment. This relationship was also found to be stable over time and significant during both the first and third lockdown.

The image of a city is the ultimate product and is formed in the course of activities that are a process. A city wishing to achieve market success should strive to shape a positive image. In this aspect, it is necessary to regularly study the image of the perceived city. The identity and brand of the city play a fundamental role in this. The purpose of this article is to identify the image of Warsaw promoted by local authorities and the perceived image of the city among its residents. The thesis that has been verified is that there is no full correspondence between the image of Warsaw promoted by the local authorities and the image of the city in the consciousness of its residents. The article consists of three parts. The first discusses the concepts of identity, brand and image of the city. The second characterizes the brand of the capital city of Warsaw and its components. And in the third, the perceived image of the capital city of Warsaw is presented. Such research methods as literature studies, analysis of internal documentation of the Warsaw City Hall in the form of reports and reports in the area of image issues, analysis of source documents in the form of the city development strategy, analysis of reports and reports on promotional and image issues of cities in national and international dimensions, and deductive analysis were used. The considerations carried out showed allowed positive verification of the thesis. In addition, they showed that a positive image of a city is an important factor in its development.
Wizerunek miasta jest produktem ostatecznym i kształtuje się w toku działań mających charakter procesowy. Miasto, pragnące osiągnąć sukces rynkowy, powinno dążyć do kształtowania pozytywnego wizerunku. W tym aspekcie konieczne jest regularne badanie wizerunku postrzeganego miasta. Zasadniczą rolę odgrywa tu tożsamość i marka miasta. Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja wizerunku Warszawy promowanego przez władze lokalne oraz postrzeganego wizerunku miasta wśród jej mieszkańców. Potwierdzona została teza, że nie ma pełnej zgodności pomiędzy wizerunkiem Warszawy promowanym przez władze lokalne a wizerunkiem miasta w świadomości jego mieszkańców. Artykuł składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej omówiono pojęcia tożsamości, marki i wizerunku miasta. Druga charakteryzuje markę m.st. Warszawy i jej elementy składowe. W trzeciej zaś przedstawiono postrzegany wizerunek miasta stołecznego Warszawy. W artykule wykorzystano następujące metody badawcze: analiza literatury, analiza dokumentacji wewnętrznej Urzędu m.st. Warszawy w postaci raportów i raportów w obszarze zagadnień wizerunkowych. Ponadto analizie poddano dokumenty źródłowe w postaci strategii rozwoju miasta, dotyczących zagadnień promocyjnych i wizerunkowych miast w wymiarze krajowym i międzynarodowym. Zastosowano również metodę dedukcji. Przeprowadzone rozważania pozwoliły na pozytywną weryfikację tezy. Ponadto pokazały, że pozytywny wizerunek miasta jest istotnym czynnikiem jego rozwoju.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest próba opisania, w jaki sposób w dziewiętnastowiecznych relacjach podróżopisarskich został odzwierciedlony problem szybkiego rozwoju środków transportu i nowych możliwości, które zrodziły się przed podróżopisarzami. Wyróżnione zostały trzy charakterystyczne sposoby opisu: dostrzeganie zaniku przestrzeni, zastępowanie przestrzeni czasem bądź kalejdoskopowe opisywanie wrażeń z podróży. W pracy dostrzeżone zostało również to, że mówiąc o doświadczeniach romantycznych podróżopisarzy, można posługiwać się stworzoną przez Marca Augégo kategorią „nie-miejsca”.
This article attempts to describe how nineteenth-century travel texts reflected the rapid expansion of transportation modes and new travel resources suddenly available to travel writers. Three characteristic descriptive modes are outlined: the disappearance of space, time’s tendency to supersede space, and kaleidoscopic descriptions of travel impressions. The article also discusses how we might apply Marc Augé’s category of the “non-place” to the experiences of romantic travel writers.

This article contemplates and proposes responsibilities towards places. Such responsibilities cannot be reduced to a mere sum of responsibilities towards humans and nature. Rather, they form a pathway to think about humans, non-humans, and nature in a way that brings to the surface their deep and place-based inter-connection. Coming from the perspective that a degrowth society is desirable, the article aims to contribute to the body of knowledge on degrowth transformations. To understand deeper how responsibilities towards places can be enacted, I rely on the philosophy of deep ecology and suggest that each firm can develop and manifest in its practices its own ecosophy. I conclude that contemplating responsibilities towards places can be a space where degrowth scholars and scholars of corporate social responsibility can meet in a mutually enriching dialogue.

During the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic many governments imposed forced lockdowns and implemented social distancing measures. At the same time there was also a large increase in gaming sales, which was particularly pronounced in the Virtual Reality (VR) sector of the market. We hypothesize that this is no coincidence since VR immersion and the capability of inducing embodiment and a feeling of presence can mitigate the loss of contact with outside world. VR has social and spatial potential to provide space and place for human interactions in time when physical contracts are restricted. To investigate this, we analyse reviews of VRChat (a social VR game) posted on the Steam platform, both before and during the pandemic. Among several themes that were identified, we found indications that spatiality plays an important role in the players’ experience. Users describe virtual worlds of the game using emotional language that suggest bonding and presence of place attachment. In the reviews made during the pandemic there is a strong theme of safety associated with virtual places of VRChat – a replacement of physical space that is no longer accessible or is perceived as unsafe. At least for some users, VRChat has provided a sympathetic and comfortable environment during the pandemic to act as a surrogate for social interaction during social distancing and isolation. Future interviews with users are needed to extend and validate this preliminary research.
W pierwszych miesiącach pandemii COVID-19 wiele rządów narzuciło swoim obywatelom różnego typu ograniczenia i wprowadziło zasady dystansowania społecznego. Jednocześnie nastąpił również duży wzrost sprzedaży gier komputerowych, co było szczególnie widoczne w sektorze rynku Virtual Reality (VR). Stawiamy hipotezę, że nie jest to przypadek, ponieważ zanurzenie w VR oraz zdolność tej technologii do wywoływania wrażenia ucieleśnienia (embodiment) i poczucia obecności (presence) mogą potencjalnie łagodzić utratę kontaktu ze światem zewnętrznym. VR ma naszym zdaniem społeczny potencjał, aby zapewnić przestrzeń i miejsce dla ludzkich interakcji w czasie, gdy fizyczne kontrakty są ograniczone. Aby to zbadać, analizujemy recenzje VRChat (gry społecznościowej VR) opublikowane na platformie Steam, zarówno przed pandemią, jak i w jej trakcie. Wśród zidentyfikowanych motywów przewodnich znaleźliśmy takie, które wskazują, że przestrzenność odgrywa ważną rolę w doświadczeniach graczy. Użytkownicy opisują wirtualne światy gry za pomocą emocjonalnego języka, który sugeruje więź i obecność przywiązania do miejsca. W recenzjach pandemii pojawia się mocny wątek bezpieczeństwa związany z wirtualnymi miejscami VRChat – zastąpienie przestrzeni fizycznej, która nie jest już dostępna lub jest postrzegana jako niebezpieczna. Przynajmniej niektórym użytkownikom VRChat zapewnił przyjazne i wygodne środowisko podczas pandemii, działając jako substytut interakcji społecznych w okresie utrzymywania dystansu społecznego i izolacji.

The aim of the article is to look at serious musical leisure activities in selected places in Wroclaw, in order to explain their significant contribution to making the capital of lower Silesia a creative city. Taking the perspective of research on music scenes and leisure studies, the author tries to demonstrate that the music scene in Wroclaw, although it didn’t develop its original sound, functions in a very effective way, providing a space for personal development, shaping the identity of individuals and the entire city. The discussed places not only serve as a physical space for a performance but primarily are communities based on internal and external cooperation. They are real “meeting places,” as the promotional slogan of Wroclaw says, for audiences and performers, amateurs, and professionals alike. The article is based on research on the Wroclaw music scene conducted since 2019. live performances that took place before the COvID-19 pandemic and between subsequent lockdowns were taken into account.

Currently, over a half of the world’s population lives in cities. It is estimated that by 2050 at least 85 per cent of Europeans will have lived in European cities. This trend is related to the fact that today cities are spaces of permanent learning in authentic contexts, which is fostered by the development of new technologies. However, little is known about the city-based learning concept, which is crucial for this type of technology-enhanced learning. Here, we discuss the theoretical background, basic assumptions and future contexts of development and implementation of this idea. Firstly, we demonstrate that city-based learning is contingent on such theories as urban studies, pedagogy of place, as well as urban education, explorative learning, learning outside the classroom, mobility of learning space or on-street activity. Secondly, we show that smartphones, tablets, GPS, educational cloud, and digital textbooks are technologies for city-based learning. We conclude that cities connected to an educational cloud (which is full of educational resources and serves as a platform for educational communication) are unique environments for students equipped with mobile tools. Finally, we point out a new project on a city-based learning implementation.
