Opis:
Over the past several years the number of students learning Spanish as a foreign language has doubled in Poland. The present article is an attempt at answering the following questions: Why is Spanish so popular in Polish schools and what are the reasons for choosing this language by Polish students? The authors wish to analyze the situation from the point of view of two types of motivation: internal (integral) motivation and external (instrumental) motivation. The results of our study have been compared to the results of corresponding studies carried out among Polish students learning German. At the opening of our deliberations we present the definitions and typical features of motivation. Next the typology and origin of motivation is discussed, which incorporates both the cognitive and affective approach. Finally, we submit the results of a pilot study performed among Polish middle school and high school students who learn Spanish.

Opis:
Attribution theory (Weiner, 1985) and self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985) have been explored as contributors to L2 motivation (cf. Dörnyei, 2001) but have never been studied quantitatively in concert. In addition, students’ attributions for success in learning a foreign language have never been measured through the use of a questionnaire. The aim of this paper is therefore (a) to develop a questionnaire with reliable constructs that allows to measure adult learners’ attributions for their success in learning English in a corporate setting, (b) to investigate these learners’ attributions, and (c) to investigate the relationship between students’ attributions and the constructs of Intrinsic and Extrinsic motivation central to self-determination theory. Our main results show that among the attributions measured, interest, effort and corporate culture seemed to be the main causes that students recognised as directly involved in their success in learning English. Of all the attributional scales, interest and ability appeared to importantly contribute to intrinsic motivation, while corporate culture, encounters with foreign professionals and ability contributed to a lower extent to extrinsic motivation. It must be noted, however, that attributions for success to teacher and task were so consistently high that they could not be reliably measured with the questionnaire.

Opis:
The aim of Pyrrhonism is deceptively simple: to achieve a state of ataraxia, of tranquility and relief from perturbation. But what is the extent of the ataraxia envisioned? Must the Skeptic admit a hard distinction between disturbances apparently related to belief and therefore subject to suspension of judgement, and extra-doxastic disturbances (e.g. everyday anxiety and frustration, or even hunger and fear) that are beyond the scope of the Skeptical method? In this paper I examine passages from Sextus’s Outlines of Pyrrhonism that indicate that such a distinction may not stand up to Skeptical scrutiny and that the Skeptical method does not only apply to “philosophical” speculative dogma or to “intellectual” perturbation, contra Barnes’s claim that the person who perceives the fewest anomalies may make “the perfect Pyrrhonist”. But I also, following Massie’s critique of unwarranted causal inferences regarding the relation between equipollence and ataraxia, distinguish cases where tarache (disturbance) presents itself as anomalous and thus lends itself to inquiry from cases where it presents itself with an apparent cause and does not provoke inquiry. Thus, though an apparently extra-doxastic disturbance may actually be rooted in unconsciously-held dogma, the Skeptic cannot demarcate a special class of potentially doxastic disturbances without employing a dogmatic psychology of her own. She must instead suspend judgment regarding the entire scope of her method, entertaining the possibility that any disturbance could be relieved through the Skeptical method. In the process, ataraxia is divested of definite parameters and the Skeptical method becomes effectively endless.

Homework in school education is one of the most important challenges in the educational process. Considerations regarding homework and its efficiency result from various approaches in both academicand school environments. Despite various opinions, discussions and the results of research on education, and at the same time the lack of legal necessity to apply homework, they remain an integral part of the education process in most schools. The aim of the research was to recognize students’ opinions on homework. The study presents the resultsof research on the use of obligatory and non-obligatory home tasks in geography lessons. According to the students, the use of compulsory homework in a Geography lesson adversely affects their mobilization for learning outside of school. Students pay attention to the problem of a small amount of time that they could devote to the pursuit of their interests. In their opinion, the possibility to decide on the form of homework would significantly increase their motivation to learn.

Motivation accompanies various human activities from an early age. The basic ones include fun, education and work. These activities are combined in different proportions and depend on the living environment and the interests of the individual. Care, upbringing, family environment and family atmosphere shape the child’s perceptions of the world. These factors also affect the individual in terms of making important decisions, which include undertaking education in a university. The human environment, objects, and the same places also imply various motives in creating human behaviour that translates into aspirations to achieve different life goals. The article is an attempt to present the impact of humans’ predispositions in their fields of interest, their self-assessment of intellectual possibilities, prospects for high -level earnings, employment opportunities in the country and abroad, as well as the curriculum covering subjects that were not difficult in high school and in which the pupil was good on the motives for choosing a major study of students of humanities at the University of Rzeszów and students of exact sciences from Rzeszów University of Technology.

Opis:
Motivation has been widely considered one of the most influential variables in the field of second language learning. Motivation may vary throughout the years, even within the duration of a single language class, and this might occur due to different factors, such as the choice of tasks or the activity type (i.e., collaborative or individual). These two factors have not been investigated in depth with young learners in foreign language settings, and from a task-based perspective. Thus, this paper addresses this gap, and explores the potential changes in motivation of 64 Spanish young learners of English as a foreign language who worked on a number of dictogloss tasks in pairs and individually over the span of a school year. Data was collected several times by means of different tools that measured students’ general and more specific task motivation, as well as their attitudes towards individual/pair work. The findings revealed that, overall, these children’s motivation was high and consolidated with time, while their level of anxiety decreased. Their attitudes towards the dictogloss were positive from the beginning to the end of the school year, and more so when they carried out the task in pairs. These findings support the benefits of collaborative work, and the dictogloss, as an appropriate task that engages children in their learning of a foreign language.

Learners’ attributions have received increasing attention in second/foreign language (L2) learning. Studies have shown that how learners attribute their performance influences not only their self-efficacy, motivation, and goal attainment but also their emotions (Hsieh, 2012; Hsieh & Kang, 2010; Hsieh & Shallert, 2008; Weiner, 2000, 2014). This exploratory study investigated how Japanese adult learners of L2 English attributed changes in their L2 learning attitudes and motivation through a 10-week TOEIC preparation program. It also examined emotions expressed in their attributional statements and the differences between learners with lower and higher L2 proficiency. A content analysis of open-ended questionnaire responses suggested eight attributional categories: perceived L2 improvement, enjoyment, positive feelings, increased L2 exposure, realization of L2 needs and importance, effective L2 instruction, and praise from the teacher for positive changes in attitudes and/or motivation and perceived inefficient L2 skills for negative changes in attitudes and/or motivation. Enjoyment was an emotion the most frequently mentioned by both groups while other emotions, such as joy, happiness, and disappointment, were expressed only by the beginner learners. These results offer important implications for L2 pedagogy and prospects for further research in the area.

Due to formal similarity, though, they quickly developed relations which led to the transformations of their meaning and form.

This study deals with linguistic terms in Slovak, Czech and Polish languages. It describes and confronts linguistic terms as terminologically motivated units from the point of view of syntactic motivation. Based on the theory of lexical motivation it points out also a cooperation of the terminological and syntactic motivation. The issue description as well as conclusions are built upon the research of an extensive material basis of Slovník slovanské lingvistické terminologie 1, 2 (Jedlička (ed.) 1977, 1979) and on more recent sources. The study points out the proportion, distribution and competition of one-word and multi-word (syntactically motivated) terms in linguistics, as well as interlingual correspondences and differences, when naming identical denotates is concerned. Furthermore, construction types of multi-word linguistic terms have been identified in Slovak, Czech and Polish languages. The paper finally pays attention to the most frequent construction types, as well as to interlingual correspondences and differences appearing in construction classification.

The article analyzes the zoophraseologisms to denote a lazy and a hard worker. It was found that the images of a bee, a horse (in all studied languages), a donkey (the Ukrainian language), a bull, a louse (the Russian language), and an ant (the Polish language) were used in the phraseology for a positive description of person. Laziness and idleness in phraseology personify the images of a cat (in all studied languages), a bird, a louse (Polish and Ukrainian languages), a drone (Ukrainian and Russian languages), a donkey (the Russian language), a dog, a hen (the Ukrainian language). Ambivalent connotations in phraseology have images of an ox (in all studied languages), a dog (Polish and Russian languages), a hen, a donkey (the Polish language). Negatively colored phraseologies prevail over positively ones. In most cases, the semantics of phraseology is related to the way of life of animals, which people perceive it, to a lesser extent – the plots of fairy tales, pagan traditions, culinary and hunting practices. Decoding of some phraseologies is complicated by the homonymy of animal names.

Mixed-methods sequential explanatory design (Ivankova, Creswell, & Stick, 2006) was applied which combines the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data in two consecutive phases. First person accounts turned out to be a useful and relevant resource for exploring individual differences in proficiency in Russian. Differences in attitudes appear to play a role in the developmental process, but to what extent this refers to attrition or non-acquisition is unclear.

The imagination is powerful, in part, because of the emotions that can be activated by imagining future states. Imagined future states are a key feature of the L2 self-system proposed by Dƅrnyei, and emotion may be the key to the motivational quality of the imagined future self. In particular, this paper focuses on positive anticipated and anticipatory emotions related to language learning. It is argued that, in general, positive emotion has a different function from negative emotion; they are not opposite ends of the same spectrum. Based on the work of Fredrickson, we argue that positive emotion facilitates the building of resources because positive emotion tends to broaden a person’s perspective, opening the individual to absorb the language. In contrast, negative emotion produces the opposite tendency, a narrowing of focus and a restriction of the range of potential language input. This article draws a framework for finding a balance between the positivebroadening and negative-narrowing emotions in the language classroom, and beyond. The emotion system is an engine for the positive-broadening power of the imagination.
