Opis:
One of the most frequent problems in translation is the question of translation of hypocorisms: inasmuch as Polish is rich in diminutives, English practically does not have them. Diminutive and affectionate forms in a very limited range of contexts, and descriptive (analytical) diminutives are of little stylistic interest. The article discusses examples of coping with this problem in translations both from Polish into English, and from English into Polish. The authors tries to answer the question if it is possible to retain the emotionality expressed in diminutives of a translated text. Two texts were selected for the analysis: Jan Kochanowski’s Laments in Stanisław Barańczak and Seamus Heaney’s translation, and Ronal Fairbank’s The Flower Beneath the Foot, translated by Andrzej Sosnowski. Laments, addressed to a dead child, are of particular interest for the analysis, because diminutives and terms of endearment are frequently used and perform a peculiar function of creation of meaning. Discussing this translation, the author of the article tries to demonstrate that the emotionality expressed by Kochanowski through hypocorisms has been expressed by other means in the English translation: the right choice of epithets, and orchestration of the verse. In the Polish translation of Firbank’s novel, the hypocorisms introduced by the translator are read not as an arbitrary addition, but as elements that contribute to the camp climate of the novel, and reflect the irony, artificiality, and theatricality of the work, by means that are accessible in Polish language.

The aim of this article is to present a part of the research results regarding the functioning of phraseological units (i.e. their canonical and innovative forms) in the Polish texts of contemporary prose translated from French. Consequently, there has been created a classification covering various types of relations occurring in given contexts between Polish phraseological units used by translators and the source texts. The practice shows that a translator decides from time to time to interpose a phraseological unit in a given context of the final text, even if there is no any kind of fixed expression in the original. Therefore, it is worth trying to find an answer to a question about translation decisions in this matter.

This article reveals theoretic aspects on literary translation through the analyses of the translation of the novel  Farewell to the autumn by Polish writer Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz. It concerns  the competences  and  skills  a  translator  of literature  should  have.  Among  other topics which have been analyzed, there is the creativeness, knowledge of cultural differences, writing skills in the goal- language. The analyses prove that it’s not that simple to translate literature and that it’s a special type of translation in the typology of translations. The article presents a list of most commonly made mistakes by translators who are not yet fit to translate  literature  of  this  kind.  Translation  of  highly rated  literature  is  a  kind  of  magic, because  of  the  effect  they  produce  on  the  reader,  and  the translator  should  be  skilled  in making the magic of the words.

The oral character inherent to a theatre and the hybrid or multilingual character of modern French Canadian literature invests it with functions that pertain strictly to the spoken word and that translator must take into account. This paper examines translation strategies proposed and applied in English and Standard-French translations of the play "Le Chien", written by Franco-Ontarian playwright Jean-Marc Dalpé. In the play "Le Chien" the hybrid character of language and abundance of swearwords constitutes a symptom of inability to communicate of protagonists and animality of their discourse. This specificity, crucial in terms of interpretation of the play, is the major obstacle in translator’s work because he needs to target the specific, English and French-speaking audience which is unilingual and doesn’t have the same cultural experience.

The paper discusses the issue of cultural memory in a translation of literary text. Based on material of Miljenko Jergović’s story Gurbet and its Polish translation, the article shows how elements of source cultural memory present in the original text are being “lost” when translated to other language and culture. The term of “losing memory” is used figuratively to present the consequences of a translator’s (conscious and/or unconscious) decisions on which specific features of source culture are to be preserved (foreignization) or not (domestication) in the target text. These decisions influence the image of source culture that the reader of the translation can “produce” in the wake of reading. For instance, Polish translation of the story “Gurbet” only partly preserves the memory of Christian-Islamic and Slavic-Ottoman intercultural (or even transcultural) coexistence in the region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is one of the main topics and motifs of Miljenko Jergović’s works. As a result, Polish reader cannot produce the same image of the source culture as the reader of the original.

Czesław Miłosz remains among the most important foreign authors and literary authorities for Chinese poets. Initially received in China with distrust and uncertainty, then portrayed in the official state discourse of romantic-revolutionary literature as the bard of socialism, Miłosz became the spiritual father of the younger generation affected by the Cultural Revolution and Tiananmen Square Massacre, a witness of the age, and a symbol of intellectual independence and resistance against totalitarianism. After a period of reading Miłosz in terms of ethical and political categories, Chinese reviews and literary texts in the 2010s and 2020s increasingly refer to Miłosz as philosophical and metaphysical poet. This article analyses Miłosz’s reception in China, paying attention to the historical, cultural, and linguistic factors that shaped the assimilation of his work and the values he brought to Chinese poetry.

In 2020, Wydawnictwo Akademickie Dialog published the Polish version of Chiny i Europa Środkowo-Wschodnia. Historia kontaktów literackich (China and Central and Eastern Europe. The History of Literary Contacts) by Chinese literary scholars: Ding Chao and Song Binghui. The book is part of the series Historia Kontaktów Literackich między Chinami a Zagranicą (The History of China’s Foreign Literary Contacts) which aims to become a comprehensive description of China’s cultural exchange with other countries. Volume 17 is devoted to China’s relationships with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia. In this group, Poland occupies one of the central positions due to, among other, a high interest in Polish history among Chinese intellectual elite of the early twentieth century and among the reformers of Chinese literature in that period. The article discusses the sources of the popularity of Polish themes in the formative period of modern Chinese literature and the reception of Polish literature in China today. It also attempts to familiarise the readers with the themes studied by the researchers, the goals they set for themselves and the methods they used to achieve them, and presents the benefits of publishing the book in Polish.

The article discusses a translation of a Carol Shields’s novel Swann. A Mystery (1987) by a Polish poet Ludmiła Marjańska (Zagadka wiecznego pióra, 1998). Marjańska’s translation is not an easy one to assess: it contains some shifts as well as simple mistakes, but Polish versions of lyrics quoted in the novel as written by a mysterious, unacknowledged (and non-existing) poet Mary Swann are undeniably its strongest point. What makes them more interesting, they show close affinity to poems by Emily Dickinson translated by Marjańska – and to her own poetry.

Among numerous books of poetry for children written by Danuta Wawiłow – famous XXth  century Polish poet and writer – one book is special: Poems for Naughty Children  [Wiersze dla niegrzecznych dzieci] published in 1987. The book is unique not only because of the poetical qualities it represents – rhythmicity, melodiousness, catchiness, melancholy and lyricism equally with pure nonsense, absurdity, grotesque, (black) humour and numerous equivoques and puns, which are characteristic for Wawiłow’s poetical works; above all else Poems for Naughty Children  is a collection of translations of the traditional English nursery rhymes, made by Danuta Wawiłow, who claimed more than once that she was a translator long before she had become a writer. The article aims to explore Wawiłow’s translation work which (up to now) remains almost unknown and un-described in Polish theoretical discourse. Moreover, the author presents the outcome of her research conducted to find “missing originals” of translated nursery rhymes, offers the classification of them and undertakes critical reflection over translation strategy adopted by Danuta Wawiłow.

The study deals with the subject of a specific type of crisis i.e. trauma in translation of literary texts. The field of Trauma Studies seems to have a huge research potential if juxtaposed with the discipline of Translation Studies. Many contemporary novels can be analysed from the perspective of traumatic experiences and their representation in works of fiction with special focus on the psychological aspect. Translation process has to make allowances for the hybridity of trauma fiction to recreate it in the target text. The analysis of the rendition of Kosmos by Witold Gombrowicz and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad (works being apt illustrations of the inescapable interfaces of trauma) illustrate the triplicity of mediation of trauma which has to be considered during the translation process: 1. the performative recreation of the original traumatic event, 2. literary texts as inherently traumatic due to the inescapable entry into the symbolic order of linguistic codes, 3. the double bind of the translation process i.e. the trauma of the impossibility of translation.

Literary translation is an ungrateful art as it requires artistry and it doesn’t offer freedom. It lags behind in the shadow of literature underestimated as an element of culture creation, and gains relatively small profits, with the exclusion of lucrative blockbusters. The present article is devoted to two German poets, Durs Grünbein and Thomas Rosenlöcher, as well as the translation of their writings into Polish that have been carried out by Jakub Ekier, a poet and a Warsaw scholar of German. Apart from a discussion of the selected poems and a few theories of translation, the main subject of this article is a detailed analysis of the translation work of Jakub Ekier which will address a number of questions, among others: Is the translating enterprise of Ekier a rendition, translation or maybe Nachdichtung in the typology of Karl Dedecius? How does Ekier treat the issue of the translation as an interpretation and the topic of loyalty to the original? Likewise, the aim of this study is to examine the strategies of translation, methods and techniques used by the translator.

The article discusses the immanent poetics of Elizabeth Bishop reconstructed the poet and critic Stanisław Barańczak, the translator of the Polish selection of her 33 wiersze [33 Poems] (1995). The reconstruction produced by Barańczak highlights the resemblance between Bishop’s poetics and his own – poetic constructivism, precision, the mastery of form – therefore confronting his essay on Bishop from 33 wiersze with an interpretative sketch by Andrzej Sosnowski, also a poet, literary critic and Bishop’s translator, seems all the more engaging. For his part, Sosnowski searches Bishop’s poetry for categories akin to the admired poetics of John Ashbery (and also to his own), pointing at her specific phonostylistics and ungraspable flow of meanings. The text is complemented by analyses and interpretations of Bishop's The Fish and At the Fishhouses in the original and Polish translations by Barańczak and Sosnowski.
