    Ethnolinguistic approach allows to track cultural information included in language, especially lexical and phraseological units. From this perspective, the language tells us about the particular way a linguistic-cultural community perceives reality. Society attributes to women a number of features, qualities, defects and social functions. These traits shape a cultural image of women, and this biased picture is functional in social relationships and it is reflected on the terms a language uses to refer to women. The purpose of this paper is to describe the perception of old women in Roman society by means of the associations and connotations carried by Latin terms anus, anicula and vetula.

    The article contains a list of 405 lexicographical items (each including Latin language), published in Poland during the years 1990–2011. The bibliography, composed in chronological order. The material in question has been excerpted and catalogued on the basis of bibliographical sources, scientific publications, publishing and library catalogues, available at the time. The fact that so much bibliographical material has been collected proves that for publishers, Latin is still a prestigious language, which enjoys a high scientific and academic status. The bibliography exemplifies editorial dynamics and welcoming attitude towards Latin language on the part of national publishers and scientific centers.

    Przedmiotem badań w artykule jest stosunek polskiego episkopatu do języka polskiego w XIII wieku. Problem został przedstawiony w oparciu o statut synodu łęczyckiego z 1285 roku. Treść większości kanonów została przedstawiona w skrócie – tym samym przybliżono tematy, jakimi zajął się episkopat podczas synodu. Natomiast istotne dla historii języka polskiego kanony 3, 4 i 6 zostały poddane głębszej analizie. Podjęto próbę odtworzenia prawdopodobnej sytuacji panującej w Kościele na ziemiach polskich w XIII wieku oraz przedstawienia stosunku episkopatu do języka polskiego i jego wykorzystania w nauczaniu i liturgii. Ponadto na podstawie wydań źródłowych dokumentów kościelnych dokonano przekładu filologicznego wskazanych kanonów na język polski.
    The aim of this article is to present the attitude of the Polish Episcopate towards the Polish language in the 13th century. The issue has been presented swith reference to the statute of the synod of Łęczyca of 1285. The content of most of the canons is briefly outlined together with the topics discussed by the Episcopate during the synod. Canons 3, 4, 5 and 6 – the most essential to the history of the Polish language – have been subjected to a deeper analysis; this enables us to recreate the most likely situation that prevailed in the Church in the 13th century in Poland. They also present the Episcopate’s attitude towards the Polish language and use thereof in teaching and liturgy. Moreover, a philological Polish translation of the above mentioned canons is based on the source editions of ecclesiastical documents.

    The aim of the study is to discuss the place of the colour green with its shades in Italian and Polish since antiquity (Latin) until the present times. Furthermore, the author shows the differences and similarities between these languages in their diachronic perception of the colour green. The colour is be also analysed in general in the light of European culture, where green has its established position.

    The article presents an analysis of 140 random lexemes of Greek and Latin origin excerpted from Słownik kieszonkowy polsko-rosyjski i rosyjsko-polski [Pocket Polish-Russian and Russian-Polish Dictionary] edited by I. Mitronova, G. Sinicyna and G. Lipkes. The corpus is, according to lexicographers and linguists, an effect of mutual influences of Polish and Russian languages. The opinions on origins of words differ among researchers, and the article attempts to verify the previously accepted judgements by M. Vasmer, W. Witkowski and Z. Rysiewicz, based on informations included in monographs by D. Moszyńska, H. Leeming, S. Kochman, and in historical dictionaries of both languages. With reference to almost 75% of the analysed material, the direction of loanword acquisition proposed by Vasmer, Witkowski and Rysiewicz has been confirmed. However, for about a quarter of the random sample of words, the accepted opinion is not confirmed by more recent historical dictionaries, nor by the lexical material provided in the monographs. The article proposes new results for the direction of loanword migration in this group of vocabulary.

    In this paper I examine Dracontius’ poem De raptu Helenae to prove his unconventionality and originality inpresenting a well-known myth. He analyses the story of the judgement of Paris from the legal point of viewusing professional, legal vocabulary. At the same time he takes into account also the moral and Christian dilemmasand thereby he finds completely new aspects and interpretations, ignored by previous poets.

    Niniejszy artykuł podsumowuje dotychczasowe wyniki badań nad transgranicznymi strategiami językowymi na granicy polsko-niemieckiej. Autor omawia znaczenie języka dla dzisiejszych badań granicznych w ogóle oraz znaczenie języka dla polsko-niemieckiego regionu przygranicznego w szczególności. Po przeglądzie językowych strategii komunikacji transgranicznej przedstawia zastosowanie różnorodnych strategii na granicy polsko-niemieckiej. Autor formułuje tezę, iż włączenie strategii alternatywnych, takich jak język polski, dwujęzyczność receptywna albo Esperanto, ale również uzupełnienia w postaci wymiany języka, zastosowania języka łużyckiego, a nawet łaciny, przyczynią się do trwałego ustabilizowania kontaktów polsko-niemieckich. Omawia także znaczenie kwestii języka i granicy w Japonii i wskazuje możliwość wykorzystania doświadczeń Europy Środkowej w sytuacji Azji Wschodniej.
    This article presents the latest results of research on linguistic strategies for transborder communication at the German-Polish border. First, the significance of language for current border studies in general and for the German-Polish border in particular are discussed. Then, theoretically possible strategies and their real application at the border region are presented. According to the author, alternative strategies, such as the use of Polish as a vehicular language, receptive bilingualism or Esperanto, but also supplementary utilization of language exchange, Sorbian or even Latin, can uniquely contribute to improve German-Polish contacts. At the end, the paper surveys the linguistic situation at Japanese border regions and suggests that the Central European Experiences can be useful to tackle the transborder communication challenges in East Asia.

    Struktury o proweniencji łacińskiej przeniknęły do współczesnych systemów prawnych zarówno kontynentalnych, jak i anglosaskich. Łacińskie zapożycze-nia świadczą o wspólnym rodowodzie kulturowym i społecznym państw Euro-py. Większość zapożyczeń uległa adaptacji na płaszczyźnie fonetycznej, morfologicznej i gramatycznej. Inne, jak łacińskie paremie, terminy i zwroty, zachowały swoje oryginalne brzmienie i zapis. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest omówienie istoty latynizmów, w szczególności ich pochodzenia, miejsca we współczesnym językoznawstwie oraz funkcji, które pełnią w tekstach z zakresu prawa. W drugiej części artykułu przedsta-wione zostaną wyniki analizy zastosowań struktur łacińskich w polskich i niemieckich tekstach prawnych i prawniczych, zebranych w bazie Eurlex. Badanie ma na celu nie tylko porównanie częstotliwości występowania latyni-zmów w dokumentach prawnych, ale także ukazanie sposobów wprowadzenia zwrotów łacińskich do tekstu i omówienie konsekwencji użycia latynizmów dla odbioru tekstu.
    Strukturen lateinischer Herkunft sind in die gegenwärtigen Rechtssysteme – sowohl in das kontinentale Rechtssystem als auch in das angelsächsische Common Law – mit der Rezeption des römischen Rechts eingedrungen. Die lateinischen Entlehnungen und Lehnwörter weisen auf die gemeinsame kul-turelle und soziale Herkunft der europäischen Länder hin. Viele der übernom-menen Latinismen wurden eingebürgert, d.h. an die geltenden phonetischen, morphologischen und grammatischen Normen jeweiliger Sprache angepasst. Andere aber – wie lateinische Parömien, Termini und Ausdrücke – haben ihren ursprünglichen Wortlaut und ihre ursprüngliche Schriftweise beibehalten. Das Ziel des vorliegenden Artikels ist es, das Wesen der Latinismen, deren Herkunft, Platz in der heutigen Sprachwissenschaft aber auch Funktion in unterschiedlichen Rechtstexten zu besprechen. Der zweite Teil des Beitrags widmet sich der Häufigkeit der Latinismen in deutschen und polnischen Rechtstexten. Da werden die Ergebnisse der Analyse der in Eurlex gesammelten polnischen und deutschen Rechtsakte, Urteile und anderen Rechtsdokumente in Hinsicht auf das Vorkommen von Latinismen geschildert. Die Untersuchung bezweckt neben dem Vergleich der Häufigkeit der Latinismen in Rechtstexten auch die Darstellung verschiedener Weisen der Einführung der Latinismen in die deutschen und polnischen Rechtstexte und die Konsequenzen deren Einführung für die Verständlichkeit dieser Texte.
    Terms and Phrases of Latin origin have been incorporated into the contempo-rary Continental and Anglo-Saxon legal systems. Latin borrowings are a sign of the common cultural and social origin of European countries. Most of the bor-rowings have been adapted on the phonetic, morphological and grammatical level. Others, like Latin proverbs, terms and phrases retained their original pronunciation and orthography.The main goal of this article is to discuss the essence of Latinisms, in particular their place in the contemporary linguistics and their function in legal texts. In the second part the article presents the results of the analysis of the Latin struc-tures, used in Polish and German legal texts, available in the Eur-lex databases. The research is aimed not only at comparing the occurrence of Latin terms, phrases or proverbs in legal documents, but also at showing the way of their introducing to the text and discussing the consequences of their usage for the understanding of the law.

    The author of this brief article draws attention to the following consequences of the baptism of Poland: empowering of the country (as a main causative factor of the emergence of the Polish language), the adoption of the Latin alphabet for the writing system, establishing Latin as the first literary language (chronologically) and as the universal language of the Christian culture in its Roman variant, adopting European educational patterns, the crucial role of the Church in creating the foundation for the Polish literary language and the general situation of Poland in the Western cultural heritage.
