Opis:: This paper shall discuss Karol Irzykowski’s views on the prose work of Stefan Żeromski. The shifting nature of the former towards the latter – author of Ludzie Bezdomni [The Homeless] 1899 – shall be examined; ones that changed from criticism to approval. In this context Irzykowski’s critical concept developed in his collection of essays, Czyn i słowo [Action and the Word] 1913, shall be taken into account and it shall also be argued that Irzykowski’s polemical discourse in respect to Żeromski was an integral part of his literary manifesto.

Opis:: Henryk Markiewicz’s book Czytanie Irzykowskiego [Readings of Irzykowski] is a collection of studies dedicated to the work of a leading Polish modernist critic who was also an influential theorist, historian of literature and author of the experimental novel titled Pałuba. Although this collection does not constitute a monograph on Karol Irzykowski’s work, the variety of methodological approaches that are presented in the articles reveals Markiewicz’s characteristic interests and shows that contemporary literary studies focus on reading and history rather than theory (P. de Man). These studies were influenced by the ideas of Russian formalists (B. Eichenbaum), semiotics and Marxism; however, Markiewicz does not faithfully adhere to any methodological school. Above all, his studies show that he is interested in literariness, literary works of art, the history of ideas and correct interpretation.

Opis:: The article discusses a collection of Karol Irzykowski’s aphorisms entitled Kuźnia bluźnierstw (The Forge of Blasphemy, 1911, printed as a book in 1913), its role against the trends of the times, especially Nietzsche’s philosophy and psychoanalysis, the importance of social rebellions, national uprisings and artistic revolutions (“blaspheming”, “bravado”, “pioneering”, audiacia civilis). In the subsequent part of the article, the author discusses the topicality of a critic’s theses in relation to the contemporary disputes over the content and the language of the argumentation. The author has placed pragmatism at the centre of the considerations, with special emphasis placed on intellectual and artistic deeds, antecedent awareness and its caricature i.e. usurpation. This is concisely put in the following aphorism: “Genuine faith feeds on lack of faith; it only lives because it is constantly restored”.
