    Child rights can be considered through the different characteristics of human rights, according to the classification “3P” as Protection, Provision, and Participation. The (potential) distinction between child rights and human rights recalls the former perspective about children’s not seen as human beings. The development of the fields on childhood studies such as “children’s participation” and “agency” are also related to the concept “empowerment,” which indicates the power relations between children and grown-ups. The main purpose of this paper is to debate all those notions through the children’s own experiences by referring to various examples in the frame of Power of children as the Fourth-P right. After discussing how children have the power to “challenge the authority,” I will indicate some examples from Little Review, as a remarkable experience of children’s participation. Lastly, I will try to reveal what today’s children consider the topic of child rights by sharing the findings of a pilot research with children, which I realized in 2019 December. In this study, twelve children who were 11-year-old then, wrote their commentaries about children’s rights and the requirements to have the rights. Thus, in the final part of this paper, the rights will be addressed through children’s perspectives.

    Henryk Goldszmit/Janusz Korczaka czynnie uczestniczył w ruchu na rzecz praw dziecka, jednym z ruchów emancypacyjnych w pierwszych dekadach XX wieku. Wywodząc się z formacyjnych dlań środowisk: lekarskiego i edukacyjnego/obywatelskiego – których przedstawiciele zgłaszali ważne inicjatywy na rzecz dzieci – podejmował w międzywojniu różne działania, by upowszechniać postulaty uznania praw dzieci oraz społecznej odpowiedzialności za ich respektowanie. Jego autorską interpretację „naturalnych” praw dziecka dokumentuje m.in. opublikowany w 1928 roku konspekt (wprowadzenie oraz siedem grup tematycznych) wykładów, jakie Korczak wygłaszał w 2. połowie lat 20. w ramach państwowych kursów dla wychowawców placówek opiekuńczych.
    Henryk Goldszmit/Janusz Korczaka actively participated in the movement for children’s rights, one of the emancipatory movements in the first decades of the 20th century. Deriving from the medical and educational/citizen formation circles for him - whose representatives reported important initiatives for children - he took various actions in the interwar period in order to promote the postulates of recognition of children’s rights and social responsibility for respecting them. His author’s interpretation of the „natural” rights of the child is documented, among others, by a summary (introduction and seven thematic groups) of lectures published in 1928, which Korczak gave in the second half of the 1920s as part of state courses for educators of care facilities.

    The point of departure for this article is the memory of moving fragments of Janusz Korczak’s journal from Warsaw ghetto. The author confronts the fragments with Korczak’s earlier texts, such as the short storied about holiday camps for Polish and Jewish children, and the novel Król Maciuś na bezludnej wyspie [King Maciuś on a Desert Island]. The image of a canary bird, used in the novel, is confronted with other symbolic stories about this bird, such as the story in Wiesław Myśliwski’s Pałac [Palace]. With reference to the image, the article invokes Korczak’s meditations on identity and tolerance, and human ethical and aesthetic choices. The audacity of Korczak’s thoughts and conclusions goes far beyond his time, and seems perfectly fit for ours.
