The challenges of Holocaust instruction and remembrance - Particular and universal aspects in formal and informal interdisciplinary curricula in Israel and abroadThe present article examines Holocaust instruction in Israel and in France, addressing formal and informal aspects of teaching practices. Specifically, the article examines whether Holocaust instruction constitutes a unifying factor that stresses what is common to human beings, among adolescents at schools in Israel and abroad, or whether it is a continuation of the methodic axis of the general model of the school and its credo. The study was conducted as part of a large-scale project evaluating 20 years of journeys to Poland by Israeli youth. It is based on a qualitative research apporoach that included analysis of interviews with policymakers, representatives of Holocaust institutes and foundations, teachers, students and guides. It also made use of field observations and official documents. The qualitative analysis revealed that that the dominant didactic models in Israel and France differ from one another in the importance that they attribute to universal versus the particular elements. Each of the models was built based on a didactic foundation of educational and teaching activity at the school in general, and Holocaust instruction in particular. The study findings indicate that in general, the Holocaust instruction in Israel continues to emphasize the particular. It serves as a tool for strengthening the unique values of the event, and stresses Israeliness, Zionism, and Jewishness. The climax of the modal is an eight-day journey to Poland, centering on a visit to Auschwitz. In contrast, Holocaust instruction in France emphasizes the universal. The curriculum positions the journey as the climax of the scholastic experience but, unlike the Israeli curriculum, it emphasizes the historical and universal aspects of the Holocaust and represses the singularity of the event in the context of the Jewish people. A comparison of the two countries underlines the substantive differences separating the two different educational systems, which have adopted different sets of values.

The essential study written by Marek Hendrykowski is a compact and straightforward guide aimed at anyone coming to the subject for the first time or just looking to improve their knowledge about documentaries relating to Holocaust. The paper offers both skimming and in-depth analysis of seven outstanding works made in the period 1993-2008 focused on key-problems of their distinctly different poetics. Author assembles evidence from the documentary film production of the time to describe the structure of message exposed in its narration, particular catches and figures, methods of lighting, framing, and editing as well as the collective feelings and emotions generated by these films. Hendrykowski considers the basic difference and fundamental conflict between two ways of thinking about manipulation in moving pictures language which establishes viewers’s approach to using (or over-using) of various stylistic catches, patterns of composition and narrative figures in this kind of documentary and generally in movies. Marek Hendrykowski’s provocative and open-minded study brings methodological revision of this important question. It will appeal to a large readership of filmmakers, cinemagoers, students and research workers interested in documentary film.

The text examines the relationship between the two categories – Auschwitz and modernity, in recognition of Jean Améry and Zygmunt Bauman, taking also into account the voice of the latter polemicists. In the first place is reconstructed Améry’s positive view on modernity with respect for the truth of the victims of Auschwitz. Then Bauman's critical position is discussed, indicating the modern provenance of the Holocaust and risk of recurrence of the Holocaust. Next the voices of Bauman’s opponents are presented. Yehuda Bauer, Henryk Grynberg, Andrzej Szahaj and Stefan Morawski pointed to the key role of ideology and irrational aspects of Nazism. At the end the common ground of Améry and Bauman is indicated – both turn to take the perspective of the victims.

The principal notion of the article–a “backward catastrophe”– stands for a catastrophe which occurs unseen until it becomes recognized and which broadens its destructive activity until it has been recognized. This concept in the article has been referred to the Shoah. The main thesis is that the recognition of the actual influence of the Holocaust began in Polish culture in the mid-1980s (largely it started with the film by Claude Lanzmann Shoah and the essay by Jan Błoński Biedni Polacy patrzą na getto [“The Poor Poles Look at the Ghetto”]), that is when the question: “What happened to the Jews”, assumes the form: “Did the things that happened to the Jews, also happened to the Poles?”. Cognitive and ethical reorientation leads to the revealing of the hidden consequences of the Holocaust reaching as far as the present day and undermining the foundations of collective identity. In order to understand this situation (and adopt potentially preventive actions) Polish society should be recognized as a postcatastrophic one.

This article examines the wartime texts produced by two deeply believing Catholics – Jerzy Andrzejewski and Czesław Miłosz. In 1942, at the time of the deportations to Treblinka, these young but already prominent Warsaw men of letters and believing Catholics engaged in a correspondence which examined the ethical crisis of the Jewish genocide and its impact on Christian humanism. Miłosz and Andrzejewski followed their epistolary exchange with literary responses to the 1943 Ghetto Uprising. Whereas the letters conceptualized possibilities of moral restoration, the literary works – Miłosz’s two poems, Campo di Fiori and Biedny Chrześjanin patrzy na getto (A Poor Christian Looks at the Ghetto) and Andrzejewski’s novella Wielki Tydzień (Holy Week) – focused on the devastating impact of the Jewish genocide on their Polish Catholic world. These literary works see the event of the Holocaust as an irrevocable failure of the Catholic dogmas of caritas and love for the Other.

The theme of the paper is observing and revealing non-pragmatic language that, when dealing with deliberately chosen texts about acts of violence, leads to productive aesthetic disturbance. In its substance, this language refers to the gulf between intensity of representation and ideological intention towards a reader declared in a complicated manner. The paper discusses five texts with the theme of the Holocaust. Three of them deal with the Holocaust as with a recent experience, namely Curzio Malaparte’s Caput (1944), Žofia Nalkowska’s Medallions (1945), and Leopold Lahola’s Last Thing (1949–1956, published in a book in 1968); whereas two other ones deal with the Holocaust after some time in a form of belles-lettres memoirs or testimony, namely Juraj Špitzer’s I Did Not Want to Be a Jew (1994) and Jerzy Kosiński’s Painted Bird (in English in 1965, Czech translation was published in 2011). All interpreted texts are marked by specific language situated beyond the border of traditional literary representation. This language is either extremely subjective, expressive and periphrastic – in this case it borders on with absurd Realism or nonsense (in case of C. Malaparte, J. Kosiński, and L. Lahola) – or, in its neutral representation (in case of Ž. Nalkowska, and J. Špitzer), it borders on with a melancholic self-referential document on limits of cultural humanism or of normal, common humanity.

The text is a critical attempt discussing the compendium Literatura polska wobec Zagłady, (“Polish Literature in the Face of the Holocaust”) edited and published by three prominent scholarly experts on the subject: Sławomir Buryła, Dorota Krawczyńska and Jacek Leociak. This is the first of the three volumes of the series Reprezentacje Zagłady w kulturze polskiej (“Representations of the Holocaust in Polish Culture”) – an endeavour which is imposing already in its first instalment concerning the years 1939-1968. The time frame of the abovementioned volume is marked by the date of the beginning of World War II (1939), resulting in the Holocaust of the Jews of Europe, and a “dry pogrom”, that is was the anti-Semitic campaign in Poland in 1968 (the campaign itself and its writings shall be examined in the following volume). A comprehensive and very carefully prepared monograph has been divided into two fundamental parts: concerning the literature reacting to the Holocaust conducted by Nazi Germany during the war (1939-1945) and discussing the literary echoes of that genocide in the years 1945-1968. The study and invaluable interpretational effort have been focused on personal document literature (Marta Janczewska, Jacek Leociak), the prose (Sławomir Buryła, Dorota Krawczyńska), the poetry (Piotr Matywiecki) and the press (Ewa Koźmińska-Frejlak). A separate chapter has been devoted to a the “global text”, i.e., Archiwum Ringelbluma (“Ringelblum’s Archives”). Highly appreciating the entire volume as well as its individual fragments, recalling fundamental considerations and the ones concerning details, finally, proposing small corrections and pointing to minor shortcomings, the author of the critical review suggests the use of the formula “Polish literature of the Holocaust” (analogous to the formula coined by Grzegorz Niziołek “Polish theatre of the Holocaust”) as the one principally necessary to be contrasted with the formula “Polish literature of war and occupation”.

The topic of this paper is the issue of the notion and classification of assemblies in Polish law, while its direct aim is to analyse and evaluate the regulations of the above issue after the changes introduced by the Act of 24 July 2015 on the Law of Assemblies (Dz.U. item 1485). The discussion is divided into two parts: the first is devoted to the investigation of the very notion of assembly, the second to the analysis of the topic of classification of assemblies – from the perspective of the form of decision of an administrative authority regarding the permissibility of holding the assembly. Following this criterion, assemblies are divided into ones which only require notification and the silent acceptance of the administrative organ, spontaneous assemblies which do not require notification, assemblies which require prior permission, and finally assemblies in the case of which it is necessary to agree on the time and place of holding the assembly with the operator of the road.

In the essay, I make an attempt to present several ways, in which the Western canon of literature, music, and cinema has influenced Noc Walpurgi. With regard to this, Marcin Bortkiewicz’s film turns out to be a work made of many citations, in Walter Benjamin’s terms, drawn extensively on Goethe’s Faust, Mann’s The Magic Mountain, Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita, Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, and Puccini’s Turandot, and the film noir poetics elaborated in the 40s and 50s of the twentieth century. Based on Magdalena Gauer’s monodrama Diva, Noc Walpurgi illuminates in the highly expressionist manner an alienated, cynical, and despotic psyche of Nora Sadler, a great opera singer, who is tormented by the Holocaust past.

The author analyzed over 20 short films produced in the National Film School in Lodz in 1948–2010. In great part these films reflect the general trend from the professional cinema of the same period. However young filmmakers appear to be more daring as far form of the films is concerned. Their films are aesthetically original, ofthe refer to genre cinema and combine different genres.

W artykule podjęto próbę przeglądu wybranych wątków recepcyjnych powieści Daniela Defoe Przypadki Robinsona Crusoe (1719) wobec Zagłady. Ukazanom tym samym, jakie elementy powieści aktualizują się w kontekście Szoa, jakie się zacierają oraz co nowego o losie innych książek i ludzi z XX wieku pozwala powiedzieć ów trzystuletni utwór. Angielska powieść służy w omówionych tekstach jako synekdocha (Primo Levi, Uri Orlev), lektura apotropaiczna (świadectwa osobiste, m. in. wspomnienia Hanke Grynberg) lub podstawa dla wykreowania apokryfu (wiersze Dana Pagisa i Jehudy Amichaja).
The author of the article attempts to review selected reception threads of Daniel Defoe’s The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719) in connection to the Holocaust. Thus, it is shown what elements of the novel are updated in the context of the Shoah, which are blurred, and what this three hundred year old book has to say about the fate of other books and people of the 20th century. The English novel is used in the interpreted texts as a synecdoche (Primo Levi, Uri Orlev), apotropaic reading (personal testimonies, including memories of Hanke Grynberg) or the basis for creating apocrypha (poems by Dan Pagis and Jehuda Amichaj).

The twentieth century philosophy of dialog created by such eminent thinkers as Franz Rosenzweig, Martin Buber and Emmanuel Lévinas, has its roots not only in the dispute with the Cartesian concept of subjectivity, ego cogito, but also - and this is the fundamental thesis of this paper - in the horrendous experience of the Holocaust. Philosophy of dialog is not a fruit of pure and abstract speculation characteristic of university faculties; it is a fruit of an authentic experience of cruelty and hatred to The Other. The Holocaust - according to philosophers of dialog - was not only a terrible result of modem technocracy, but primarily a poisoned fruit of the European transcendental tradition o f thinking. Pioneering works o f philosophy of dialog that nowadays are recognized as classical, were written in the turmoil of The First World War - at war front and in Stalag. The transcendence of The Other, according to the philosophy of dialog, in the tradition of modem thinking was reduced to the immanence of subjectivity, Cartesian cogito. Consequently, this modem gesture of detranscendentalization repeated and reinforced in the age of philosophical idealism, has become one of the fundamental reasons for horrible and irrational expansion of cruelty in the twentieth century. The answer, unlike many others, to the Holocaust given by the philosophy of dialog was clear: the first vocation of philosophy is to guard the transcendence of The Other, who never can be reduced to the order o f thinking. The Other, understood as the other person, always exceeds any ideas and concepts, within which a subject tries to categorize him. Therefore New thinking inaugurated by philosophy of dialog, finds its foundation not in ego cogito, but in the unconditional recognition of the reality of the other person. New thinking begins with respect for the mystery of manhood.
