Opis:
Almost all outstanding Polish historians and poets of the 17th century put forward the theory that the Polish gentry (szlachta) was descended from the Sarmatians-the warriors settled between the Dnieper and Vistula rivers. Sarmatism became an all–embracing national ideology. It was characterized among other things by megalomania. This article is an attempt at a survey of heraldic literature of Bartosz Paprocki(“Gniaz do cnoty”, Kraków 1578), Szymon Okolski (“Orbis Polonus”, Kraków 1641– 1645) and Wacław Potocki (“Poczet herbów szlachty”, Kraków 1696). The discussed Polish and Latin texts of poetical and rhetorical character were persuasive and shaped ethical values of their readers. These armorials satisfied the ambitions of the gentry but also touched upon current socio–political, religious and, last but not least, moral problems. Especially Wacław Potocki in his heraldic verses expressed a critical attitude towards the negative aspects of everyday life of the gentry.

Opis:
The article presents the subsequent stages of Aleksander Ostrowski’s education; it shows his successes at school, and also points at the direct link between the economic achievements of the Ostrowskis’ domain and the level of the owners’ education. The general and professional knowledge acquired at school and the level of culture and civil awareness provided resulted in the formation of high educational ambitions also in the next generation: the atmosphere of the family home and the pedagogical attitude of Aleksander and Helena Ostrowski influenced the fact that their children were also well educated; therefore, they could continue the family traditions, develop their farm, and participate in political life. The example of the Ostrowski family from Maluszyn can serve as an argument justifying the statement that a high level of education should be treated as a main factor in forming certain types of world views, social and political beliefs, and the level of interest and participation in culture. It should also be treated as a factor determining openness towards innovations and progress in both the organisation of social life and the economy.

Opis:
Polish linguistic courtesy owes a lot to the gentry’s culture and courtly culture in general. As research suggests, centuries ago the major and specific norms of Polish etiquette (the special position of women) emerged while the noble and courtly origin of the majority of the contemporary forms of address is beyond doubt. Due to the dominant impact of the aristocratic and courtly model of courtesy on the linguistic habits of contemporary Poles and their ancestors, it seemed interesting and useful to present and describe selected elements of Sarmatism’s linguistic etiquette from today’s perspective (with special emphasis placed on words of greetings and farewells) included in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s famous historical novel, Ogniem i mieczem [With Fire and Sword]. This attempt was also stimulated by the book’s cognitive value and the author’s impressive knowledge of the Polish gentry in the mid-17th century, obtained as a result of studies of the literary diaries available to him. Therefore, the attempt made to recreate the world of gentry’s culture and its model of Old Polish etiquette is not just a product of the author’s imagination and it continues to inspire contemporary readers.
