Opis:
In this paper, the author tries to deliver exercises for Polish students of German language with Danish as other foreign language. On the basis of the common German-Danish word-formation-patterns, the author attempts to build a new Danish-learning-model, based on these common patterns, the parallelism of which stays on the level of ca. 60-95%, allowing so a more often German-Danish transfer. Using these and other similarities between the two languages a student of Danish with German as source language can from the very beginning learn Danish in a more effective way.

This article deals with recent Danish literature in the light of the discussion about canons occasioned by the publication of the two ministerial canons: Undervisningskanon (Educational Canon, 2004) and Kulturkanon (Cultural Canon, 2006). The article argues that recent Danish literature challenges traditional work categories and the concept of the author on which the two canons are based, and discusses which works and texts in recent Danish literature ought to belong to a future canon.

The article aims to reconstruct the conceptualization of KÆRLIGHED (LOVE) in Old Danish (1100–1515). In the first part of the study, the structure of the concept in Old Danish is analyzed, and parallels are drawn to the modern-day concept of KÆRLIGHED, the most significant differences being registered in the subcategories of PATRIOTISM and ROMANTIC LOVE, as well as in connection with the sense ‘love to do’. In the following parts of the study, the most important aspects and conceptual metaphors of Old Danish KÆRLIGHED are revealed, demonstrating a great influence of Christian values. Lastly, the nouns ælskhugh and kærlikhet are analyzed, and the difference between them is described as a different profiling of the various aspects of KÆRLIGHED, such as JOY and PLEASURE.

Opis:
The aim of the paper is to identify the image of a woman coded in Danish proverbs. The basis of my research is the assumption that proverbs convey knowledge of how societies perceive the reality and that proverbs are used as interpretative mechanisms. This is mainly achieved thanks to the repetitive nature of proverbs. Simultaneously proverbs force certain perception of the world upon societies and promote certain values. The image of a woman in the Danish language is composed by two stereotypes, a negative and a positive one. The image is a combination of contradictions. On one hand there is admiration for features such as care, motherhood, life experience and, hard work, but on the other hand women are submitted to discrimination and harsh social pressure. Women are depicted as talkative, dominating, evil, vain, unpredictable, unrestrained. They face pressure to get married, take good care of their looks, or be exemplary housewives. The analysis of Danish proverbs gives a possibility to observe how much women’s social status, character and the perception of women by the society have changed throughout the centuries and how these changes have influenced the language we use and the reality that the language depicts.

Opis:
The article derives from the intertextual approach to the notion of literary identity, introduced to the modern literary theory in the 1960’s by Julia Kristeva (born 1941). The main idea behind this approach is that no literary text should be perceived as an isolated unity, but always in relation to other texts, which it refers to. The author applies the intertextual perspective to examine the signs of external literary influences in Lise Andersens minimalist prose collection ”En særlig sommer og andre billeder”, published in 2008. The analysis aims to highlight influences from the American short story genre, which appears as an important source of inspiration not only for Andersen herself, but in fact for most of the Danish writers of minimalist fiction. The analysis provides examples of, how inspiration from the American short story manifests itself in form, narration and structure of the selected stories in the collection. Last but not least, the author draws attention to the general importance of American influences in Danish contemporary short fiction and their role for the critical perception of this literary genre both in Denmark and abroad.

A series of morphological and syntactic tests are applied to perfective and imperfective ACCOMPLISHMENTS of directed motion in Polish and Danish (biec / at løbe, iść / at gå, lecieć / at flyve og jechać / at køre + directional adverbials). This illustrates that the verb constellations of interest do not always show the features of canonical ACCOMPLISHMENTS that do not refer to motion as such.

The aim of the article is to analyze the grammatical and lexical homography of both neuter and non-neuter Danish nouns, which have been divided into two groups. The nouns in the first group occur in both grammatical genders with no difference in meaning (grammatical homographs), while the second group is comprised of nouns that do have different meanings based on their grammatical gender (lexical homographs). The author has also identified differences based on word stress (stress homography), different pronunciation and differences connected with the presence of stød or lack thereof, which usually cause a difference in meaning.

This article analyses the relationship between black humor and dystopian literature. In dystopia, humor can appear on the surface as language or situational comics, but there is also a deeper link between these two literary phenomena: they confront the reader with an unexpected notion in order to bring him to a critical reflection. There are many dystopias in the Nordic literature that use comic elements. Three of them are discussed in this article: Axel Jensens Epp (1965), Lena Anderssons Duck City (2006) and Kaspar Colling Nielsens Den danske borgerkrig 2018–24 (2013). The analysis shows that classic black humor is enriched with other tragicomic, satirical or surrealistic elements and significantly contributes to the critical tone of the text. In all cases humor is used for the same purpose, and this is a critique of superior power (the so-called superiority theory). Therefore, humor can be considered not only as a stylistic means, but also as a principle of construction of the dystopian works.

Collections of Danish Golden-Age art are quite rare outside of Scandinavia, especially when it comes to those developed in accordance with a well-thought-out strategy established through the international cooperation of scholars. An important exception is the large group of Danish drawings, oil sketches, and artists’ correspondence found in the Fondation Custodia – Collection Frits Lugt in Paris, gathered by art historian and longtime museum director Carlos van Hasselt (1929–2009). As director, van Hasselt provided an interesting model of collecting, as his pursuit was not motivated by a particular investment strategy. His collection may, in a sense, be viewed as the material result of a network, one which he established and which brought together Danish researchers and museologists, as well as international art dealers. The aim of this article is therefore to investigate how a network may inform and help determine a particular collection practice, to trace how van Hasselt became an agent of the Danish art establishment, and to provide a critical overview of this collection, which became a satellite representation of the canon of 19th-century Danish art in Paris. Analysis of Carlos van Hasselt’s archive will provide critical reflections on the ways in which the collection was built and developed, and how it may serve as an example of the international dissemination of canons.

Opis:
Following the call in Sandlund, Sundqvist, and Nyroos (2016) for incorporating discursive approaches into the field of oral second language (L2) testing, this paper proposes an interactional usage-based approach to the analysis of oral L2 performance. Based on Eskildsen (2018a), we combine analytic tools from usage-based linguistics and conversation analysis. We draw on usage-based linguistics to analyze performance in terms of test-takers’ inventories of linguistic constructions and on conversation analysis to understand their interactional competence in terms of the relation between the linguistic constructions and the actions they are used to accomplish. Performance assessment is thus constructional and interactional. Participants in this pilot study were two Danish primary school children who performed two consecutive oral tasks: a semi-guided interview and a picture-elicited narrative task. Data were analyzed by means of cross-child comparisons and cross-task comparisons within each child. Our data confirm the observation from previous research that simple question-answer(-assessment) sequences dominate oral test formats, but also that the format is sometimes abandoned, which allows for the accomplishment of new social actions. Moreover, the picture-description task affords a different speech exchange system with the interviewer participating more as an active listener when the children do not voluntarily carry out the requested task.

The present paper aims to investigate and compare the conceptualization and verbalization of the in-out relation in Danish and Polish. The introductory paragraphs focus on the differences in the distribution of content in Polish and Danish employing Leonard Talmy’s typological classification of languages into verb-framed and satellite-framed, and provide information about Danish Directional Adverbs which are believed to be the key to understanding spatial relations in Danish. The analysis in the following paragraph reveals similarities and differences in the perception of the in-out relation through image schemas such as container and center-periphery. The analysis of the center-periphery image schema in Danish reveals that there is often a presupposed reference point in situations where the directional adverb does not refer to the in-out relation denoted by the prepositional phrase, which leads to a description of the general structure of this image schema in the last part of the article.

In this paper we discuss the alienability splits in two Mainland Scandinavian languages, Swedish and Danish, in a diachronic context. Although it is not universally acknowledged that such splits exist in modern Scandinavian languages, many nouns typically included in inalienable structures such as kinship terms, body part nouns and nouns describing culturally important items show different behaviour from those considered alienable. The differences involve the use of (reflexive) possessive pronouns vs. the definite article, which differentiates the Scandinavian languages from e.g. English. As the definite article is a relatively new arrival in the Scandinavian languages, we look at when the modern pattern could have evolved by a close examination of possessive structures with potential inalienables in Old Swedish and Old Danish. Our results reveal that to begin with, inalienables are usually bare nouns and come to be marked with the definite article in the course of its grammaticalization.

The elite cemetery in Bodzia (from the late 10th to the early 11th centuries) hosts the deceased of foreign and local origin who had a strong sense of ideological and ethno-cultural bonds. According to the results of the author’s latest research, a large tomb D162 played a pivotal role in the cemetery. It was originally built as a grave – a mausoleum with an entrance from the east. Over time, more graves with enclosures were added to the existing tomb on the eastern side, imitating architecture of a primary grave. The successive burials in which remains of foreigners were identified represented the structural first degree elements of the cemetery. In line with the results of isotopic labelling, the group of people buried in this row is associated with newcomers from the Baltic (Scandinavian) zone. In search of the sources of the idea and, further on, the model of the cemetery, attention was directed at the symbols and the structural elements of royal courts and rural aristocratic mansions, especially rectangular plots of land with enclosures as known from Denmark. In the light of newer research, the most symbolic representations include the topography and structural elements identified around the royal kurgans in Jelling.

The article attempts to discuss two examples of Danish literary discourse on former Danish colonies on the Gold Coast (Africa). Sophie Petersen’s travel books “Danmarks gamle Tropekolonier”, 1946 (The former Danish Tropic Colonies) and “Vore gamle Tropekolonier”, 1948 (Our former Tropic Colonies) and Thorkild Hansen’s documentary novel “Slavernes Kyst”, 1967 (The Coast of the Slaves) have been analyzed as texts that reveal a part of the Danish colonial and postcolonial (self-)reflection and consciousness. The literary representations of Africa given in the aforementioned books reflect the Danish nation-building project in the respective historical, political and mental contexts (during the Second World War and in the sixties). Petersen and Hansen apply different writing strategies (rhetorical as well as discursive) in their presentations of the Danish history of the Gold Coast, and they seem to represent rather dissimilar approaches to this topic. As a conclusion, the author of the article attempts to answer the question about the role of the African representations in the Danish self-understanding as a nation.
