The present paper addresses doubtful cases concerning the use of umlaut in the adjectival comparison of contemporary German: bang ‘anxious’ – banger/bänger – am bangsten/bängsten. It aims to shed light on the concrete distribution of this variation, i.e. the preference for one of the variants. Corpus-based analyses will show that the adjectives under discussion are not equally affected by umlaut variation: some are (surprisingly) stable (e.g., gesund ‘healthy’), whereas many others have a clear preference (i.e. > 70%) for non-umlauting forms (e.g., blass ‘pale’, nass ‘wet’). Interestingly, a few of the supposedly stable cases appear to have at least some non-umlauting forms (e.g., krank ‘ill’, nah ‘near’, grob ‘rough’). Even more interesting (but still comparatively rare) is the use of umlaut in conceptual orality contexts with adjectives that exhibit no umlaut comparison in Standard German, e.g., klar ‘clear’, falsch ‘wrong’, doof ‘stupid’. As will be demonstrated, these doubtful cases reflect a centuries-old and still ongoing reorganization process within umlaut comparison. It will turn out that a complex network of interacting factors such as token frequency, phonological schemas, and morphological complexity is at work.

The objective of this contribution is to contrastively analyze the currency of words formed by the frac- tolexeme -gate in French and Czech languages. Before presenting the results of our research that relies especially on data derived from the SketchEngine (Czech Web 2017; French Web 2017) corpora, we find it necessary to address theoretical questions to frame the concept of fractocomposition in current linguistic studies. We have borrowed the term fractocomposition from the French linguist Jean-François Sablay- rolles (2019, p. 149), who defines it as a case of compounds “one of whose elements is a fractolexeme,   a fragment of lexie which is valid for the entire lexie”. However, in our discussion we note also other terms that are also used to denote the same concept.

This paper investigates the lexical choices made by speakers of Ladin in describing the opening scene of Mayer’s (1969) Frog, where are you? in Ladin and in the other languages they learnt later in life (Italian, German and English). The focus of the investigation is on motion lexicalisation, which varies across languages in terms of preferred encoding patterns (Talmy 1985, 2000; Wälchli 2001). Relative frequencies are calculated for the variants occurring in the different languages, before turning to a qualitative discourse-analytic approach, which forms the core of the analysis. The results are discussed with reference to the fields of typology and cross-linguistic research. The analysed texts bring to the fore the necessity of distinguishing between national and regional idioms and the potential value of drawing cross-linguistic issues to the explicit attention of learners. Possible implications are considered with reference to the novel framework of Applied Language Typology (Filipović 2018)

The United States breast cancer movement helped to transform breast cancer’s social and medical landscape domestically and, in some ways, internationally. However, differences in gender identities, power relations, and the role of feminism(s) cross-culturally also shaped breast cancer advocacy itself. After giving a brief introduction to the socio-historical context of the U.S. and Polish breast cancer movements, this article illuminates some of the linkages and divergences between the United States and Poland to demonstrate the role of gender and power in social movements that concentrate exclusively on women’s (health) issues, namely breast cancer. This comparison of social phenomena from two countries illuminates the impact of cultural patterns on models of activism as they relate to feminism and traditional gender roles.

The paper is supposed to consider the formation of Russian compounds based on the imperative construction in comparison with a similar model in Italian. It is believed that in literary Russian this model is not productive, although it occurs in a limited number of examples: for the evaluative names of persons (sorvigolova ‘daredevil’), for the names of animals and plants (vertišejka, perekati-pole) and in some other cases. However, in Romance languages, and particularly in Italian, this is one of the most productive models, although its grammatical status is not usually associated with the imperative construction. As for Russian, it is possible to assume a transformation of the imperative sentences and imperative meaning, and only a particular modal shade of typical actions is preserved. The model itself is represented as a transition from incomplete compounding to the canonical productive model with an interfix. The results of an experiment on the translation of Italian compounds into Russian nonce compounds show a number of transitional cases, supporting this hypothesis.

The article is devoted to a comparison of the American and European systems of data protection and the transfer of personal data from the European Union to the United States of America. The author outlines the problems and then analyzes the regulations in order to identify differences between the two systems. Then, based on the previous considerations, she assesses the effectiveness of the Safe Harbour Program, which was set up to serve as a tool to facilitate the transfer of personal data. The article ends by providing information about the directions of policy changes and work on the new EU Regulation on the protection of personal data.

Previously published corpora of two-word utterances by three chimpanzees and three human children were compared to determine whether, as has been claimed, apes possess the same basic syntactic and semantic capacities as 2-year old children. Some similarities were observed in the type of semantic relations expressed by the two groups; however, marked contrasts were also uncovered. With respect to the major syntactic mechanism displayed in two-word child language, namely word order, statistically significant differences were found in all three comparisons that were tested. These results indicate that chimpanzees do not exhibit the linguistic capacities of 2-year old children.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global one, but the effect is different for each country and society and has different dimensions. The study investigated couple relationships during the first lockdown (also called emergency state) in Poland (N = 235) and Japan (N = 420). Based on a quantitative survey, it focuses on socio-economic issues and related concerns. The survey inquired opinions about changes in the depth of the relationships, attitude to the partner, and frequency of arguments during the lockdown. From among Polish and Japanese respondents, more than 60% declared that their current partner is the best one for the isolation. Both Japanese and Polish males seem to be more satisfied with their spouses than the female partners. The results indicate that there is a need to make more detailed cross-country comparisons in terms of the functioning of relationships during lockdown and isolation. The observations made imply that there are areas to investigate more in-depth. A follow-up survey is needed to understand whether the issues in intimate relationships will be long-term ones or whether we see them only during the pandemic. The questionnaire domains: changes in the depth of relationships, attitude to the partner and frequencyof arguments during the lockdown. Method: quantitative research, survey, online questionnaire, voluntary participants collected by social media.

This research aims to compare precipitation data derived from satellite observation and ground measurements through a dense station network over Central Java, Indonesia. A precipitation estimate from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) 3B42 Version 7 are compared with precipitation data from interpolated rain gauge stations. Correlation analysis, mean bias error (MBE), and root mean square error (RMSE) were utilized in the analysis for each thee-monthly seasonal statistics. The result shows that the 3B42 products often estimate lower rainfall than observed from weather stations in the peak of the rainy season (DJF). Further, it is revealed that the 3B42 product are less robust in estimating rainfall at high elevation, especially when humid environment, which is typical during the rainy season peak, are involved.

Social media have become a part of people’s lives, being not only a place of entertainment and mutual communication but also promotion of pop culture models connected with the human body appearance. For many, these models become guidelines for behaviors regarding body looks and a source for its assessment by comparing their appearance to that of models. The purpose of this article is to present the correlation between the amount of time spent by young adult respondents in the social media space and modelling themselves on other people as regards the appearance, comparing their own bodies to other users’ bodies and patterns of behavior to improve the body look. A diagnostic survey method was applied in the study and the author’s questionnaire in an online form was used. 493 young adults, social networks users, participated in the study. The results show that the more time the respondents spend on social media, the more they model themselves on others as regards their physical appearance, the more often they compare the look of their bodies with those of other people and undertake more behaviors targeted at improving their appearance. The specified correlations refer to a greater extent to the male subjects of the study. These results constitute an important guideline for prevention and educational activities concerning the significance of body looks in modern culture, including consequences of increasing social pressure on the image of the male body.

The use of computational methods in comparative linguistics is growing in popularity. The increasing deployment of such methods draws into focus those areas in which they remain inadequate as well as those areas where classical approaches to language comparison are untransparent and inconsistent. In this paper we illustrate specific challenges which both computational and classical approaches encounter when studying South-East Asian languages. With the help of data from the Burmish language family we point to the challenges resulting from missing annotation standards and insufficient methods for analysis and we illustrate how to tackle these problems within a computer-assisted framework in which computational approaches are used to pre-analyse the data while linguists attend to the detailed analyses.

This article is devoted to the concept of an artifact, as derived from older methodological knowledge (J. Białostocki and E. Panofsky), which has been broadened to include new indicators, such as changes of the virtual era as well as the categories of experience and reflections on narration. By reconstructing the phenomenon of artifacts, the author refers to the category of ‘reality’ accordingto Heidegger and W. Toporow as well as the ideas of a ‘sign’ and ‘theme’, and Polish artistic practice (T. Kantor and Z. Herbert). The concept is situated within the arts as well as within a contextualized area of the social sciences (an actant) and aims to offer new perspectives on the study of culture.
