Opis:
There is no doubt that the Catholic Church is in a deep crisis. On the one hand, it is internally divided between supporters of the changes initiated during the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) and conservatives opposing these changes in the name of the (Counter-Reformation) decisions made during the Council of Trent (1545–1563). On the other hand, the Church is involved in a number of political, financial, paedophile, etc. scandals. They prove the progressive loss of contact of this institution with the world as a place to preach the Gospel. For both of these reasons, the number of believers in countries considered Catholic is steadily decreasing. The purpose of this article is to correct or supplement this diagnosis. Historically, the Catholic Church – like many other religious organizations – has never been „spotless”. However, this did not prevent Catholics from identifying themselves with this institution as the depository of the Revealed Truth. Today is different. Many of them are experiencing an identity crisis. They cannot reconcile the Gospel (which takes the form of religious dogma) with the existential and moral challenges they face every day. The subject of the research undertaken in this article is to find answers to the questions (1) about the skills that allow them to reconcile one with the other and (2) about the role of the Church in the education of the community of the faithful.

The history of Slovenian Catholic Church is a field, which is not well known in Poland. That is why this article aims to present one of the peculiar episode from the past of Slovenian Catholicism. The article covers the time of the Second World War and the govern of marshal Tito. During the Second World War Slovenian Catholic Church existed under the occupation of the fascist countries – Italy and The Third Reich. In this period, the main offensive power was the communists, who were fighting against invaders and often had a negative attitude towards clergy. Their attitude resulted in collaboration of Slovenian catholic hierarchs with the communists. The communists’ governs established in 1945 and the consolidation of Tito’s power situated the Catholic Church in a new reality, which was Yugoslavian variant of communism called “Titoism”. This doctrine shaped terms of the existence of Slovenian Catholic Church until 1980 when the marshal Tito died and the Yugoslavia’s breakdown began.

The study presents selected aspects of the pastoral and writing output of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. Obviously, they do not encompass or exhaust the complete range of his activity and genuine achievements during his ministry in the Greek Catholic Church. But it was not the purpose of this study to list all the accomplishments or to emphasize the general effect of the works of this outstanding hierarch of the Church. The overriding reason for bringing out Sheptytsky’s profile was the attempt to show him against the background of his epoch and its specific historical-religious circumstances, in order to draw attention to his stance as a person and Church hierarch in the context of essential historical challenges. The following issues are tackled: Sheptytsky’s impact on the shaping of organizational and spiritual matters of his Church, his initiation of the movement of renewal of the Eastern rite in the Eastern Catholic Church, his openness to cooperation and strengthening relations within the Christian communities. Last but not least, the author wished to accentuate the personal authenticity of the Metropolitan, who has not always been assessed in a reliable and objective way.

This article is a preliminary reconnaissance of Jakub Wujek’s presentation in his Lesser Postylla sermons of the Catholic Church and the truths of faith he preached. This reconnaissance confirms that the circumstances of the creation of Wujek’s Lesser Postylla, its genesis, strongly influenced the content of the work. For the universal, Catholic Church was almost always presented by the Jesuit preacher in confrontation with the image of the criticised dissenters. Notably, the picture of the true Church as presented by Wujek in his sermons is fully in line with the doctrine of this religion. Undoubtedly, the picture of the Church painted almost five centuries ago is still valid, as confirmed by confronting Wujek’s remarks with the contemporary version of the official interpretation of the Catholic Church’s doctrine of faith and morals, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, compiled in the second half of the 20th century after the Second Vatican Council.

Christian missions in Cameroon were quite closely related to European colonization. It came with noble slogans of bringing civilization and freedom. But it had primarily economic and political goals. Although missionary activity was born from other motives, it was nolens volens entangled in the politics of the colonial states. The Cameroonian coast nominally belonged for centuries to Portugal. At the end of the 18th century the missionary activity in Africa had almost completely disappeared. The beginnings of the mission in Cameroon were entangled in the intricate politics of England, Germany, and France in particular. Without this political dimension it is impossible to fully understand the contemporaneity of the various Christian denominations in Cameroon.

Opis:
The paper attempts to present the leading objectives and motives of the ‘Church’s policy of memory’ before and after 1989. The author states that, like many other institutions of public life, the Catholic Church implements its own policy to shape the collective memory of Poles, both in terms of legitimization and content. At the time of the Polish People’s Republic, the first and foremost objective of the ‘Church’s memory policy’ was to counteract the activities of the communist authorities, which were carrying out a project to restrict the Church’s influence to the narrowly understood field of the priesthood and which ultimately aimed at the atheization of Polish society. The emphasis on the historical symbiosis of Polishness and Catholicism served the purpose of defending the traditional form of Polish religiousness and providing the Church with social support in the struggle to maintain the public dimension of its influence. Despite the change in language, the present objective of the Church’s historical narration appears similar: to oppose these aspects of secularization trends that drive the Church away from public space and so intensifying the phenomenon of the privatization of faith. Whether in the past or present, the Church’s vision of the past is to secure its own stability as an institution and retain the role of a significant factor contributing to the national and state conscience of Poles.

Since the Second Vatican Council, Catholic teaching has placed great emphasis on in interreligious dialogue as an integral aspect of the Church’s mission. However there remains a tension between interreligious dialogue and the church’s duty of proclaiming the gospel that constantly calls for clarification. By articulating the ecclesiological foundations of interreligious dialogue, Benedict XVI has significantly contributed to clarify the Catholic understanding of its nature and characteristics, and also suggested concrete ways in which Christians and the followers of other religions are called to engage in constructive dialogue for the good of the whole of humanity.

lostness of the institutional Roman Catholic Church in Poland
Opis:
The lostness of an individual or institution is manifested in their aversion towards conforming or adapting to the social and cultural conditions in which they are to function or carry out their fundamental tasks. Lostness affects secular institutions as well as religious institutions, including churches. In this paper I demonstrate the lostness of the institutional Roman Catholic Church in Poland over the past 25 years through the reflections of clergymen and theologians, as well as on the basis of sociological research findings. Theologians claim that this lostness also signifies the specific pastoral situation of the Church brought about by the systemic transformations in Poland over this period, previously unencountered by and unknown to the Church, hindering the Church’s functioning and inducing it to take erroneous decisions. Lostness takes on a variety of forms and is manifested in numerous spheres of the Church’s secular activities, but does not affect its essence or religious identity. However, it does embrace its functions and actions, its attitudes and its decisions, in the area of secular and political activity, its relations with society, and also in relations within the clerical community. Wording it differently, lostness applies to the human structure of the Church, and within this above all the bishops and leaders who guide it and manage its assets, and who also perform an instructional and educational function towards the Church’s faithful.

The situation is presented with reference to the Croatian „Witches from Rio” case of 1992–1993 in order to demonstrate similarities of the two backlash discourses, both in the choice of rhetorics and topics (e.g. international conspiracy, deviated sexuality, national treason, violation of the natural social order). Finally, the author attempts to diagnose the impact that the campaign has had so far on various gender-focused projects (both in research and teaching) conducted in and outside academia in Poland.

The paper aims to depict State-Catholic Church relations within the framework of the discourse of the „Gość Niedzielny” weekly. Since the relations between the State and the Church are very complex the paper focuses on one, controversial topic, namely public education (religious education and sexual education in particular). Research findings suggest that the journalists of „Gość Niedzielny” expected the State to fulfill the demands proposed by them, as they represent the Catholic majority.

The article presents some terminological differences between various Christian denominations existing on Romanian territory, mainly between the Romanian Orthodox Church, prevalent in Romania, on the one hand and the Greek Catholic Church (the Uniats) and the Roman Catholic Church on the other. These differences are usually a result of a conscious linguistic policy of both Catholic rites and various Protestant and Neo-Protestant denominations. They are also reflected in the use of different forms of the name Jesus Christ, which exists in at least three versions. Even in the case of the same, common notions, the new denominations often introduce different terms, mainly Latin and Romance neologisms, in order to mark an external and formal difference from the Orthodox Church, whose terminology is of mostly Greek and Slavonic origin.

In those endeavors, Šeptytsky was concerned not only with the interests of his Greek-catholic clergy, but with the welfare of Catholic clergy in all Polish eparchies, advocating further independency of the Church from state authorities.

he judgment of March 31, 2020, file ref. II CSK 124/19, has great social and legal significance. It is the first Supreme Court ruling concerning the civil liability of church legal entities for pedophilic acts committed by a clergyman. The Supreme Court shared the view of the Court of Appeal accepting the liability of church legal persons in the light of all the facts of the case of Art. 430 of the Civil Code (culpability in supervision). However, it convincingly distanced itself from the position of the District Court (court of first instance) that liability under Art. 429 of the Civil Code (culpability in choice) should be taken into consideration. In the justification of the judgment, the Supreme Court conducted a thorough analysis of the premises for the civil liability of church legal persons for the activities of a religious person subordinate to them. In particular, it stated that if the perpetrator acts for personal gain and the performance of the official activity enables him to cause damage, the superior cannot effectively raise the objection that the subordinate caused said damage only in the performance of the entrusted tasks. Thus, the Supreme Court upheld the interpretation of Art. 430 of the Civil Code, assuming the liability of legal persons for damage caused by a subordinate. It distinctly applied this liability to church legal entities. When appointing the adjudication panel of the Supreme Court, impartiality was preserved. On the other hand, doubts are raised regarding the Court’s neutrality in terms of world-view in some parts of its judgment justification. The judgment of March 31, 2020 must be assessed as brave and just. It has the chance to set the course of judicial decisions in matters of the liability of religious legal persons for pedophilic acts committed by clergy acting under their supervision. The justification of the judgment is understandably critical towards the perpetrator and church legal persons superior to him, and also sometimes towards the provisions of the Code of Canon Law. It should be emphasized, however, that the judgment is not an “indictment” against the Catholic Church as such, and even less so against religion.
