Opis:
The study presents selected aspects of the pastoral and writing output of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. Obviously, they do not encompass or exhaust the complete range of his activity and genuine achievements during his ministry in the Greek Catholic Church. But it was not the purpose of this study to list all the accomplishments or to emphasize the general effect of the works of this outstanding hierarch of the Church. The overriding reason for bringing out Sheptytsky’s profile was the attempt to show him against the background of his epoch and its specific historical-religious circumstances, in order to draw attention to his stance as a person and Church hierarch in the context of essential historical challenges. The following issues are tackled: Sheptytsky’s impact on the shaping of organizational and spiritual matters of his Church, his initiation of the movement of renewal of the Eastern rite in the Eastern Catholic Church, his openness to cooperation and strengthening relations within the Christian communities. Last but not least, the author wished to accentuate the personal authenticity of the Metropolitan, who has not always been assessed in a reliable and objective way.

Opis:
Christian missions in Cameroon were quite closely related to European colonization. It came with noble slogans of bringing civilization and freedom. But it had primarily economic and political goals. Although missionary activity was born from other motives, it was nolens volens entangled in the politics of the colonial states. The Cameroonian coast nominally belonged for centuries to Portugal. At the end of the 18th century the missionary activity in Africa had almost completely disappeared. The beginnings of the mission in Cameroon were entangled in the intricate politics of England, Germany, and France in particular. Without this political dimension it is impossible to fully understand the contemporaneity of the various Christian denominations in Cameroon.

Międzynarodowa Komisja Wspólna ds. Dialogu między Kościołem Rzymskokatolickim a Cerkwią Prawosławną prowadzi dialog poświęcony prymatowi papieskiemu. Aktualny stan dialogu na temat prymatu oddaje dokument z Rawenny: Ecclesiological and Canonical Consequences of the Sacramental Nature of the Church. Ecclesial Communion, Conciliarity and Authority. Soborowość i prymat w Kościele znajdują najgłębsze uzasadnienie w najważniejszym chrześcijańskim dogmacie o Trójcy Świętej. Analogicznie można by dokonać korekty zachodniej tradycji prymatu biskupa Rzymu w świetle tradycji Kościoła starożytnego.

The opening of the Vatican radio station on 12 February 1931 by Pious XII marked the moment from which the Catholic Church, initially reluctant towards radio broadcasting, began to see it as a tool of evangelization. In many countries, Poland included, ways of cooperation of the Church with the radio were subsequently developed along with guidelines for preparing Catholic radio programs. The Poznań radio, which opened on 24 April 1927, already ten days later, by permission of Cardinal August Hlond, conducted the first broadcast of the Holy Mass in Poland. From then on, until the outbreak of the Second World War, the schedule of the Poznań radio station included broadcasts of the weekly Holy Mass, services, Church events as well as concerts of sacral music and programs on religious themes. The article is appended with their complete list.

There is no doubt that the Catholic Church is in a deep crisis. On the one hand, it is internally divided between supporters of the changes initiated during the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) and conservatives opposing these changes in the name of the (Counter-Reformation) decisions made during the Council of Trent (1545–1563). On the other hand, the Church is involved in a number of political, financial, paedophile, etc. scandals. They prove the progressive loss of contact of this institution with the world as a place to preach the Gospel. For both of these reasons, the number of believers in countries considered Catholic is steadily decreasing. The purpose of this article is to correct or supplement this diagnosis. Historically, the Catholic Church – like many other religious organizations – has never been „spotless”. However, this did not prevent Catholics from identifying themselves with this institution as the depository of the Revealed Truth. Today is different. Many of them are experiencing an identity crisis. They cannot reconcile the Gospel (which takes the form of religious dogma) with the existential and moral challenges they face every day. The subject of the research undertaken in this article is to find answers to the questions (1) about the skills that allow them to reconcile one with the other and (2) about the role of the Church in the education of the community of the faithful.

The history of Slovenian Catholic Church is a field, which is not well known in Poland. That is why this article aims to present one of the peculiar episode from the past of Slovenian Catholicism. The article covers the time of the Second World War and the govern of marshal Tito. During the Second World War Slovenian Catholic Church existed under the occupation of the fascist countries – Italy and The Third Reich. In this period, the main offensive power was the communists, who were fighting against invaders and often had a negative attitude towards clergy. Their attitude resulted in collaboration of Slovenian catholic hierarchs with the communists. The communists’ governs established in 1945 and the consolidation of Tito’s power situated the Catholic Church in a new reality, which was Yugoslavian variant of communism called “Titoism”. This doctrine shaped terms of the existence of Slovenian Catholic Church until 1980 when the marshal Tito died and the Yugoslavia’s breakdown began.

Epistemic modality indicates the degree of certainty or doubt a speaker has for the proposition expressed by their utterance. Evidentiality, on the other hand, is the indication of the kind of evidence for a statement in question. Given the eminently persuasive character of homiletic discourse, it frequently makes use of epistemic and evidential markers. The preacher emphasizes his high degree of certainty about the content of what he says and, in order to gain credibility, he supports his reasons citing the Bible or other reliable sources. This paper aims to analyze the markers of epistemic modality and evidentiality in Catholic sermons in Spanish. Moreover, it intends to defi ne the limit between different kinds of evidence. In order to carry out this analysis, twenty homilies pronounced in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City have been examined. First of all, the defi nitions of epistemic modality and evidentiality are presented and the relation between these concepts is explored. Then, a classification of evidential values, based on the one by Plungian (2001: 351, 353), is illustrated. After that, the results of the analysis of epistemic modality and evidentiality in twenty sermons are discussed. Finally, the paper touches upon some problematic issues resulting from the classifi cation of different kinds of evidence.

This article is a preliminary reconnaissance of Jakub Wujek’s presentation in his Lesser Postylla sermons of the Catholic Church and the truths of faith he preached. This reconnaissance confirms that the circumstances of the creation of Wujek’s Lesser Postylla, its genesis, strongly influenced the content of the work. For the universal, Catholic Church was almost always presented by the Jesuit preacher in confrontation with the image of the criticised dissenters. Notably, the picture of the true Church as presented by Wujek in his sermons is fully in line with the doctrine of this religion. Undoubtedly, the picture of the Church painted almost five centuries ago is still valid, as confirmed by confronting Wujek’s remarks with the contemporary version of the official interpretation of the Catholic Church’s doctrine of faith and morals, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, compiled in the second half of the 20th century after the Second Vatican Council.

It is here that the archbishop of Gniezno and Poznań resided, here was the seat of the General Institute of Catholic Action, and it was here that many religious magazines were published.„Tęcza" was the first Catholic literary, cultural and social magazine edited by the laity. It was initially a weekly (I927-I93I) and then a monthly (I932-I939). The editors were respectively: Szczepan Jeleński, Emil Zegadłowicz, Jerzy Drobnik and Józef Kisielewski, who deserves the greatest credit for his work. The publisher of the magazine was the then influential Księgarnia św. Wojciecha (St. Adalbert Bookstore). The „Tęcza" magazine was open to authors of various literary orientations, including West European Catholic thought and literature (Claudel, Mauriac, Chesterton, Bloy, Maritain, von le Fort). Attention was paid to the moral dimension of the published texts. As a monthly it became less elitist.

Opis:
The paper attempts to present the leading objectives and motives of the ‘Church’s policy of memory’ before and after 1989. The author states that, like many other institutions of public life, the Catholic Church implements its own policy to shape the collective memory of Poles, both in terms of legitimization and content. At the time of the Polish People’s Republic, the first and foremost objective of the ‘Church’s memory policy’ was to counteract the activities of the communist authorities, which were carrying out a project to restrict the Church’s influence to the narrowly understood field of the priesthood and which ultimately aimed at the atheization of Polish society. The emphasis on the historical symbiosis of Polishness and Catholicism served the purpose of defending the traditional form of Polish religiousness and providing the Church with social support in the struggle to maintain the public dimension of its influence. Despite the change in language, the present objective of the Church’s historical narration appears similar: to oppose these aspects of secularization trends that drive the Church away from public space and so intensifying the phenomenon of the privatization of faith. Whether in the past or present, the Church’s vision of the past is to secure its own stability as an institution and retain the role of a significant factor contributing to the national and state conscience of Poles.

By articulating the ecclesiological foundations of interreligious dialogue, Benedict XVI has significantly contributed to clarify the Catholic understanding of its nature and characteristics, and also suggested concrete ways in which Christians and the followers of other religions are called to engage in constructive dialogue for the good of the whole of humanity.

It is quite commonly believed that the modern history of Spain begins with the reign of the Catholic Kings-Isabel I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, whose marriage was the cornerstone of the Castilian-Aragon union. Still, many historians are of the opinion that the notion of Spain in times of the Catholic Kings was purely geographic in nature, therefore Isabel and Ferdinand cannot be called rulers of Spain. My article undertakes polemics with such standpoint, and proves that already in the Spanish Middle Ages one spoke of Spain, moreover, not merely in the geographical sense, but with a historical and religious-cultural community in mind. I also draw on the evidence inherent the fact that Isabel and Ferdinand were called “kings of Spain” by their contemporaries, across Iberian Peninsula and beyond it. When analysing the motives behind concluding union by the two rulers, I demonstrate that for Isabel, Spain of the time was identical with what was Castilian, whereas Ferdinand entertained a genuine vision of Spanish unity, which rose above regional and particular perspectives. In equal measure, this dichotomy determined the shape of the monarchy of the Catholic Kings as well as its internal working, which was far from harmonious. In the conclusion, I point out that that the concept of Spain was most completely manifested in the foreign policy of the monarchy which was essentially steered by Ferdinand.
