Opis:
Lidar-derivatives gathered during the realization of IT System of Country’s Protection Against Extreme Hazards (so-called ISOK programme) have initialized the non-invasive archaeological research concerning the preservation of the relicts of the former prisoner of war and internment camp in Tuchola, Poland. The camp functioned during the Great War (1914–1918) and the Polish-Soviet War (1919–1921). This paper discusses and summaries the preliminary results of this research. It argues that the use of ethnographic methods can supplement and enrich the historical records related to the camp. The article discusses in detail the assemblage of material culture made, remade, or personalized by prisoners and internees documented during the research. These artefacts are unique examples of trench art. Discussionconcerning the objects is the main goal of this paper. They are the first examples of the trench art related to the Tuchola camp analyzed in the archaeological literature.

The article is an analysis of the English translation of Michał Witkowski’s Lubiewo, the translation first published in 2010 as Lovetown. The discussion focuses on the level of difficulty facing the translator, Bill Martin, in the context of numerous intertextual references in Lubiewo, the problem of memory and post-dependency. It is also an attempt at inquiry into the influence of translator’s decisions on the reception of the novel abroad. In particular, the question of translation of the aesthetic of bent and camp in the text, which is visible in theatric quality of language, use of emotionally marked expressions, hyperboles, sexual undertones, sexual language proper, language games, gay slang etc.

In an age when the global dissemination of digital information is transforming the way we read and write by foregrounding the interdependence of visual/verbal elements and languages, the reconstruction of identity and history in digital environments challenges binary translation processes. From this perspective, we interrogate the integration of visual and verbal elements in three Wikipedia articles, written in Polish, English, and Portuguese, about the topic “Polish death camp”. What is the role of translation in the semiotic construction of historical discourses in these articles? What are the conflicts generated by translated denominations? How do Wikipedia communities engage with the production of these cognitiverepresentations? This paper attempts to answer these questions.

The subject of the article is the review of the book “Inwiefern ist das heute inter-essant?” Erinnerungen an den stalinistischen Gulag im 21. Jahrhundert by the German literary scholar Nina Friess (2016), which is dealing with the contemporary Russian memory of the Gulag. The goal is to show how the author interprets and contextualizes memory practices in today’s Russia and which texts are crucial for her as manifestations of these remembering strategies (and forgetting as well). Reading this book allows to form the thesis that the extreme experience of the Soviet camps is still a controversial issue in the Russian culture and that the memory of it is full of gaps and empty spaces, even though at the same time this subject increasinly finds its way into popular cultural (graphic novels and crime thrillers).

The article examines the question of the concentration camp space and the figure of the “Muslim” in the novel Les Boucs (1955) by the Moroccan writer Driss Chraïbi. Published ten years after the war, the novel nevertheless uses certain motifs from the literature of the camps. Even if the geography of “Arab Paris” in North African literature has been well described and analyzed, the kinship of the Goats with concentration camp literature has not received sufficient attention. Therefore, in my study I will first recall the circumstances of publication of the novel and the main lines of its reception by critics to then move on to the analysis of the concentrationary space in the novel. The link with the space of the camps will finally be reinforced by the evocation of the figure of the “Muslim”, well known from the testimonies and expressly exploited by Driss Chraïbi.

In this text, I analyze Krzysztof Ptak’s contribution to such films as Kornblumenblau and Cynga by Leszek Wosiewicz, and 300 miles to heaven by Maciej Dejczera. These films belong to a time that can be characterized as a period of “hot times”, when Krzysztof Ptak was interested in using cinematographic methods to the limits of their possibilities. As far as the history of Polish cinema is concerned, it was then that Polish directors were looking for a new language to talk about the Polish past. Wosiewicz and Dejczer avoided the accusation of “americanization” of Polish cinema, which was charged to Władysław Pasikowski. This may be because Krzysztof Ptak was the cinematographer of their films.

Opis:
The problem of presenting the traumatic experience of deportation and detention in a concentration camp is still painfully topical, the more so that hitherto existing methods and linguistic strategies provide no useful tools for its investigation, being either frustratingly ineffective, or altogether useless. Over time, a certain regularity in handling the problem has become noticeable, i.e. a distinctive separation of the available accounts of the experience into those provided by women and those evidenced by men. The answer to the question of how to narrate has to be then preceded by an appropriate question on social, cultural and gender identity of the narrator. On the basis of the exemplary accounts by four former inmates of the concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau it is possible to understand the specificity and uniqueness of feminine perception of the camp’s reality. The accounts provided by Charlotte Delbo, Liana Millu, Seweryna Szmaglewska and Krystyna Żywulska — all easily identifiable by the different adopted form of message conveyance — share the specificity of women’s subjects raised, aspects closely related to the structure of a woman and her existence in responding to extreme conditions, often omitted in accounts provided by male witnesses. Camp pregnancies, dramatic deliveries, pseudo-scientific experiments, rapes and prostitution — all these constitute additional themes related to by women, victims to the above.

Her work proves that the experience of trauma, though unimaginable, is utterable. Millu resorts to literary fiction to outline life stories of Birkenau women, their typical problems, ways of dealing with tham, as well as the survival strategies thay employed. Liana Millu’s testimony is an unusual attempt to show how women experienced the trauma of the camp.

Over the period directly following the Second World War, continuity and discontinuity were closely interwoven in the Walloon literature. From one hand, esthetic models from Interwar period were still present and no novel concepts appeared in the writings of Walloon authors. From the other, however, a large number of new State-run institutions were inaugurated. The hardships suffered during the war, seen mainly as an instance of disruption, are abundantly described in literary works, especially in testimonies. It is in this context that Arthur Haulot, Belgian poet and novelist, made prisoner and taken to Dachau, created his literary poignant output. His writings are marked by harsh experiences undergone in camps.

Like most people of art after 1st September 1939 she abandoned hitherto lifestyle and participated in the defense of Warsaw as a nurse and cook but did not become a regular soldier at that time. Together with other professional jobless actors she rendered services as a waitress in a café U Filmowców and occasionally performed on a stage. However, in the third year of war she joined the structures of Polish Underground State and fought in the Warsaw Uprising in Battalion Sokół. Consequently Grossówna got sent to POW camp Gross-Lübars and the latter in Oberlangen. After the camp was released in 1945, she came back to the country to struggle with the reality of Poland ruled by the Communist Party.

Who (and what) was silent about the story told by heteronormative society? And how is the fragment of this story seen by “Others”? The article shows that the time of “queer before gay” includes (in Polish) not only well-known names such as: aunt or pedal, but also slang: ‘lala’ (doll), ‘przyjaciółki’ (friends), ‘siostry’ (sisters in Polish, girls in English), gays “from the outside of society”, as well as heterosexuals who got a ticket to the alternative world of the excluded. I tell this story from the perspective of the performative function of language (Althusser, Austin, Butler) and mechanisms of knowledge/power (Foucault). I focus on the activities of homosexual men encoded in their “hiding language” (sociopolitan gay). I show how the creation of the “homosexual” identity closed the community of aunts and pedals in a precisely defined form. And how camp and queering reality allowed them to function in this form. This article is thus another element of decoding the so-called language of concealment, so-called sociolect of Polish gays (aunts and pedals) and queering history of Poland (part of the queering history of Central and Eastern Europe).

The aim of this article is to reflect on the religiosity of Stalinist prisoners shaped by religion or the Christian tradition. A comparison of works of Polish and Russian literature demonstrates that prisoners from the Soviet Union and Poland essentially otherwise referred to the faith, to the Decalogue. Most of the inmates came into the camp from the country’s militant atheism, infected with a hostility to religion as “the opium of the masses”, and only in the camp were they looking for ways to return to the faith of their fathers. However, they often kept faith in the value of humanity, they represented a secular holiness. A substantial majority of Polish prisoners affirmed their Catholicism, which was not only a witness of their faith, but also synonymous with Polish culture. Such an attitude often hampered relations with the Orthodox and Greek Catholics. A large part of the Polish inmates reluctantly referred to them as Christians of the Eastern Rite, as a consequence of Catholic education in pre-war Poland, but also out of hostility towards Russians and Ukrainians. Many of them, however, disregarded religious issues, they referred to a fellow prisoner with respect, regardless of his religion. They looked at them from the human perspective.

This article discusses the results of archaeological and anthropological research concerning material remains of a prisoner of war camp in Czersk (Pomeranian province, Poland) (Kriegsgefangenenlager Czersk). In the first part, I sketch a broader historical context related to building and functioning of the camp in forests around Czersk between 1914–1919. After that, the role and meaning of  archaeological research on such type of archaeological sites are presented. In the third part, I focus on a very special category of the camp heritage which is called trench art. The last part of this paper is a case study where an assemblage of objects classified as trench art that was found at the camp is described and interpreted. This text aims at highlighting the value of such prisoners and camp’s heritage. Such material culture is a material memory of extraordinary prisoners’ creativity behind barbed wire. It makes one aware of how every piece of trash, rubbish was re-cycled during day-to-day life behind barbed wire.

This essay discusses two examples of contemporary Filipino cinema – The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros (Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros), Auraeus Solito’s directoral debut, and Joel C. Lamangan’s Zsazsa Zaturnnah: Ze Moveeh. More divides than binds these films together, especially in terms of genre. The first is a comedy-drama, the latter – a musical adaptation of a fantasy comic book. What binds them together is the fact that both main characters are bakla – Filipino gays, although the word is very difficult to translate into Polish. It refers both to a “gay“ – a homosexual person who is in a relationship with another homosexual person, as well as a feminized man who performs his own sexuality and identity. Even though it would be very difficult to describe The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros and Zsazsa Zaturnnah: Ze Moveeh as masterpieces of contemporary cinema, their pertinence should be seen in the courage to speak about the issue of homosexuality in the Philippines and the undeniable uniqueness of showing the social problems of the country in this manner.
