Opis:
Research on the representation of emotion in human memory has focused on the ways in which words that label an emotion (e.g., love, joy) or represent emotional components (e.g., death, butterfly) are learned, stored, and retrieved from memory. The current work reviews the ways in which these types of words have been distinguished from concrete and abstract words, the types of methodologies used to distinguish among word groups, and the ways in which these words are automatically processed in the bilingual speaker. While emotion words may be more readily processed and retrieved when they appear in the first language, other word types that are neutral with regards to arousal and valence may be processed similarly across languages. The current work also illustrates the ways in which this knowledge is important in advancing theories of language and cognition, attention, perception, and mental health. Future directions are discussed that elucidate the further applications of these interesting lines of research.

Opis:
Cognitive performance declines with age following different trajectories. The cognitive trade-off, however, between age and cognitive reserve is still not clear. In addition, bilingualism has been thought to play a role in delaying cognitive decline by affecting cognitive control outside the scope of language. However, the effect has been unreliably reproduced and without exploring sufficiently the differences between cognitive functions that govern language control. In the current study 112 adults varying in age, level of bilingualism and cognitive reserve, completed a modified version of the Simon task, which engaged the mechanisms of interference suppression and shifting. Using ex-Gaussian analysis, the Simon effect was replicated in the normal component and the shifting effect was found in the exponential. Additional linear mixed-effects model analysis showed a significant “negative” effect of bilingualism on inhibition and a “positive” effect of cognitive reserve on shifting, both independent of age. Age affected similarly the speed of engagement of both executive functions irrespectively of language or cognitive background. Implications of a bilingual disadvantage and a beneficial effect of cognitive reserve during ageing are discussed.

The aim of the article is to show the Polish-Brazilian evolution of bilingualism throughout ages. his paper shows different definitions and types of bilingualism, taking into consideration a comparison between the Polish and Portuguese language. Furthermore, I present a review of 150 years of Polish citizens’ history in Brazil. It presents their difficulties and the approach of the Brazilian government from the 19th to the 20th century. The most significant  subject are Polish schools and organizations. Their history shows how the command of Polish and Portuguese changed throughout ages. There were different conditions, affecting the command of languages in the Polish Diaspora, such as the familial approach or access to Polish culture. I also mention which organizations and people had the biggest impact on Polish citizens in Brazil. I also describe the existing attitude to both cultures and languages in Polish communities. Apart from that, I try to understand the identity and acquaintance of Polish culture nowadays and show actions as a resultof which Polish language and history are promoted nowadays.

Bilingualism is a topic that is most often discussed in the context of raising and working with children. However, the role that bilingualism plays in adulthood and late adulthood is underestimated in the literature. At this stage of life, some people may develop the first symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases, mainly associated with memory and communication disorders. The article briefly introduces the most common causes of dementia symptoms and then discusses bilingualism in several, closely related aspects. The publication contains information on the impact of bilingualism on delaying the symptoms of dementia and triggers of this phenomenon. The creativity of bilinguals and the unique impact of bilingualism on working memory and executive control are addressed.

Existing studies on plural acquisition in German have relied on small samples and thus hardly deliver generalizable and differentiated results. Here, overgeneralizations of certain plural allomorphs and other tendencies in the acquisition of German plural markers are described on the basis of test data from 7,394 3- to 5-yearold monolingual German and bi/multilingual immigrant children tested with a modified, validated version of the Marburger Sprachscreening (MSS) language test and 476 children tested with the SETK 3-5 language test. Classified correct and wrong answers to MSS and SETK 3-5 plural items were compared. The acquisition patterns of immigrants corresponded to those of younger German children. Both monolingual German and immigrant children demonstrated generally the same universal frequency and phonetically/phonologically based error patterns, irrespective of their linguistic background, but with different tendencies such as overgeneralization of -s by German children only.

The article discusses the educational consequences of the collateral nature of the Kashubian language in relation to Polish. The collateral nature is defined as the languages’ mutual intelligibility resulting from their formal proximity and the lack of political independence of the language community. Based on longterm field research and in-depth interviews, the analysis touches upon language ideologies in Kashubia which directly impact the process of teaching the Kashubian language. These ideologies – the assumptions about the language and its users rooted in social consciousness – refer to the status of the Kashubian language, its dialectal nature, and the legitimate speakers of Kashubian. Language ideologies related to the collateral nature of Kashubian are responsible for the choice of the teaching methods, the distrust of people associated with education (parents, teachers, students) as to the meaningfulness of teaching, as well as the relationship between the language learnt and spoken by the community

Educating for a future that assumes students will be educated in the country where they were born or that they will remain in the country where they are currently in school does not reflect the reality of the movement of people in an age of globalization. The research presented here examines the case of children and youth in Mexican public schools who have had some or all of their education in the United States, transnational students (TS) with a particular focus on their linguistic situation. Results suggest that TS struggle with the linguistic transition from Spanish as language of the home to Spanish as the language of education. The paper concludes with suggestions for future research and application to other contexts.

Sygmatyzm, czyli nieprawidłowa realizacja głosek dentalizowanych szeregu ciszącego (ś, ź, ć, dź) i/lub syczącego (s, z, c, dz) i/lub szumiącego (sz, ż, cz, dż), to jeden z najbardziej dotkliwych problemów logopedycznych występujących u dzieci dwujęzycznych uczęszczających do polskich szkół sobotnich.
Sigmatism, or improper realization of the dental sounds of the alveolo-palatal consonants (ś, ź, ć, dź) and/or sibilants (s, z, c, dz) and/or fricatives (sz, ż, cz, dż), is one of the most severe speech therapy problems in bilingual children attending Polish Saturdays schools. Lisping is caused, among others, by improperly built speech organs or their low efficienc, but also by disorder s ovf phonemic hearing – inappropriate reception of hearing aids. In bilingual children who speak Polish and English simultaneously, there is often an additional phonetic difficulty associated with the weak differentiation of consonants, ś, ź, ć, dź in opposition to sz, ż, cz, dż. The development of phonemic hearing in young children is one of the methods to prevent lisping, in older people – a way to eliminate it. The role of teachers of Saturday schools is invaluable in this case – phonemic hearing exercises play a significant role not only in learning the correct articulation, but also in mastering the skills of reading and writing.

Opis:
The article discusses Polish-Latin bilingualism of Polish medieval legal texts and its impact on the shaping of the official language variant. The article presents constructions that, in their own structure of court oath, include a form of set and often repeated formulas. These are: the formula of initial oath (Tako mi pomoży Bog i święty krzyż [so help me God and the holy cross]) and the comparative construction indicating the membership of a social class of the participants of the events (tako dobry jako sam [as good as himself]) or the material value (tako dobry jako [as good as]). These constructions would appear in the Polish text in Latin, both in full or shortened form, or they would be part in Polish, part in Latin. The stable form of constructions that appeared in Latin as calques due to the influence of Polish indicates that they became, as a result of the domination of the Latin template, vivid markers of the official style in medieval Polish.

The aim of this study was to explore automaticity of lexical access and executive functions of language learners and bilinguals while considering their language automaticity. Three groups of youths aged 14 to 18 were tested: Croatian-German early bilinguals, Croatian high school students who participated in a German immersion programme at school and Croatian high school students of German as a foreign language. The participants were tested on a modified version of the Stroop test (i.e., a Stroop-like test). It presented pictures of an animal or an object with names of an animal or an object written over the picture. The names were written in Croatian or German and were either congruent or incongruent. Lexical access was slower for the bilinguals in both Croatian and German, which suggests that they used more of their cognitive resources because both of their languages were highly active, and more executive control was required to complete the task.

Opis:
This study deals the use of personal names among Slovakia Hungarians. The bilingual environment of Slovakia Hungarians affects their use of personal names. Bilingual persons can choose names from a larger set of names. Choosing a variant of a personal name from one language or the other can depend on several factors: the communicative domain, the communication partners, the social or linguistic context etc. The dimensions of time, space and society play an important role in the change anddiversity of personal names. A Hungarian dominant use of names characterizes Slovakia Hungarians in the informal domains, and Slovak dominant use in the formal domains. A dual use of names or bi-naming can characterize a dual identity, however, most people employ this as a pre-emptive strategy trying to avoid a possible language or communication problem by using the form conforming with the majority norm in a majority language context and the form conforming with the minority norm in a minority language or informal context. Personal names have an identity marking function, and can indicate the language affiliation and nationality of their bearer.

Jan Kochanowski was a bilingual artist– he wrote poems in both Latin and Polish. The choice of language in his work is determined by the circumstances in which particular works arose (in his Paduan period he wrote in Latin, after his return to Poland he turned to his native language) as well as the subject matter he deals with in different texts. A comparison of his foricoenia and fraszkas or Latin elegies and Polish songs demonstrates that he uses both languages to express a range of emotions and both allow him to employ diverse literary conventions.
