CHURCH
Opis:
Aurelius Ambrosius is a characteristic example of an official of the imperial administration who made a clerical career in the early days of Christianization of the Empire. His life was full of unexpected events. Born into a Christian family, he still put off the moment of baptism – a common custom, yet not recommended by the Church. His stable career path changed radically when Ambrosius was elevated to the rank of Bishop of Milan.

Opis:
Jan Joachim Tarło belonged to a family whose three members were bishops of Poznań in the first half of the 18th century. Jan Joachim was an alumnus of Jesuit schools and during his sojourn there joined the Society of Jesus which he left in 1689, passing into the ranks of diocesan clergy. In December 1718 he was granted papal provision to the bishopric in Kiev and remained in office until 1723 when he was transferred to the office of bishop of Poznań which he fulfilled for nine years until his death on 13 August 1732. He died in Vienna on his return from a journey to Rome. His book of pontifical activities for the years 1719-1731 survives till the present day and is stored at the Archdiocesan Archive in Poznań (catalogue number ASO 7). The book is divided into sections in which the following types of activities are recorded: ordinations of various degrees including presbiterate and episcopate, blessing of cornerstones, consecration and blessing of churches, consecration of permanent altars and portative stones, blessing of church bells, consecrations of the holy oils. From the records in the book it follows that during his ministry as bishop of Kiev, Tarło stayed in the Cracow diocese and discharged his duties there. Interestingly, there is no evidence of his performing any official acts in the area of the Kiev diocese, which must have been connected with the fact that already by then a great part of its territory (the bishopric of Kiev included) lay within the borders of the Russian Empire, whereas the part that remained in the Kingdom of Poland encompassed just a few parish churches.

In April 1927 the Holy Father Pious XI appointed Rev. Karol Radoński, pastor of the church of the Most Holy Heart of Jesus and St. Florian in Poznań, coadjutor bishop of August Hlond, the archbishop of Gniezno and Poznań. In the literature of the subject it is assumed that the Episcopal nomination took place on 8 April, 1927, even though from an analysis of press accounts of the period it follows that the news was made public only on 22 April. The article, based on source documents, describes the circumstances of the nomination of Rev. K. Radoński as coadjutor bishop and the press context of the event. The nomination was preceded by a press leak about Rev. Józef Kłos, editor-in-chief of ,,Przewodnik Katolicki" as supposedly suggested for the post by Primate Hlond.

Opis:
The article refers to the religious and cultural turning point that took place in the Piast state due to the act of accepting Christianity by the prince Mieszko I (who died in 992) in 966. These issues are presented from the view-point of a controversial interpretation regarding the source foundation and literature, number of which has increased over the decades. The baptism of the historically first Polish ruler was preceded by his marriage with the Czech princess Dobrava (who died in 977), which resulted in the alliance with the Přemyslid monarchy and in the growing connections with Germany along with the conflicts with the Veleti. The consequence of the 966 year’s events was the initiating of the Christianization processes in the whole state of the Piasts and its gradual accessing to the circle of Latin culture. In effect, the grounds for the institutional Church were formed, and the Polish aspirations for being a member of Western culture, which have lasted for all the centuries, were established.

Opis:
In 2013 an unknown volume from the collection of books of bishop Erazm Ciołek, an eminent renaissance bibliophile, was discovered in the Raczyński Library in Poznań. The binding of the book features several impressions of a heraldic super ex libris, whereas the lining pasted on the inside of the covers is scrap printing paper from the Jan Haller printing house. In view of an enormous historical value of the volume and scarce knowledge of Ciołek's bibliophilic profile, the binding was set against the other presently known bindings from the bishops' book collection. As a result it was established that he availed himself of the services of the Krakow book binders Piotr Wald and Henryk Sussmund; moreover, he also used at least four kinds of super ex libris, out of which two have a characteristic Italinizing form of the testa di cavallo type. A typographic analysis of the scrap paper revealed that it is probably a fragment of a 'prognostic' that did not survive in any other copy.

In the 4th century AD, with the ongoing Christological debate, personal ambitions, political, ideological and economic problems came to the surface, which ravaged the structure of the Universal Church. The east of the Empire was a particularly susceptible area, but similar phenomena were also taking place in the Eternal City.  In the latter half of the 4th century, against the backdrop of debate sparked by the teachings of Arius and the intervention of Constantius II in the internal matters of the Roman Church, divisions ensued.  The causes behind such state of affairs appear so complex that one cannot conclusively state whether this resulted from personal ambitions or whether the issue of maintaining orthodoxy was at its roots.  It seems that in the discussed events the Aryan affair was merely a pretext for pursuing now indeterminable goals of the groups into which the community of Roman Christians had been split.

The Order of Reformed Franciscans, a conservative and strict branch of Franciscans, flourished in Poland mainly on the territory of Wielkopolska and Małopolska. The convent in Chocz was chronologically the third foundation in the Wielkopolska custody. Its founder was bishop Andrzej Lipski, who in order to strengthen Catholicism not only brought the Reformed Franciscans to the place but also built a collegiate church, thereby creating a complex of religious institutions in one part of the  town.In the years 1636-1639 there was a conflict between the Reformed Franciscans and the Bernardines. As a result the former were made to leave Chocz for a time. Upon return they began the construction of a new, brick church and convent (1699-1725 r.) It is worth noting that among others, Brother Mateusz Osiecki participated in the realization of the convent buildings. The church was erected in the recessed variant of the wall-pillar system and shows affinity to the Reformed Franciscan Church in Kalisz. Moreover, it is an important example of the sacral buildings of the Wielkopolska province of Reformed Franciscans. The convent was secularized in 1864 by decree of emperor Alexander II. The monks regained their right of ownership only in 1920. First, the convent buildings were used by the Order of Sisters the Shepherdesses of Divine Providence, and only later again by the Franciscans. At present the whole complex is under major restoration works.

The article discusses the immanent poetics of Elizabeth Bishop reconstructed the poet and critic Stanisław Barańczak, the translator of the Polish selection of her 33 wiersze [33 Poems] (1995). The reconstruction produced by Barańczak highlights the resemblance between Bishop’s poetics and his own – poetic constructivism, precision, the mastery of form – therefore confronting his essay on Bishop from 33 wiersze with an interpretative sketch by Andrzej Sosnowski, also a poet, literary critic and Bishop’s translator, seems all the more engaging. For his part, Sosnowski searches Bishop’s poetry for categories akin to the admired poetics of John Ashbery (and also to his own), pointing at her specific phonostylistics and ungraspable flow of meanings. The text is complemented by analyses and interpretations of Bishop's The Fish and At the Fishhouses in the original and Polish translations by Barańczak and Sosnowski.

Ignacy Raczyński, the bishop of Poznań from 1794 to 1807 and then the archbishop of Gniezno, ruled the Poznań diocese in a complicated political situation that followed the loss of independence by Poland. The Poznań period of his life and activity has so far been hardly investigated. The author carries out a brief characterization of his rule in this period and publishes six of his letters to Jan Chrzciciel Albertandi, his official for the archdiaconate of Warsaw, formerly the Mazovia part of the Poznań diocese. The letters reveal a number of hitherto unknown details of the relations between the Church and the state in those times. The text also includes the pastoral letter of bishop Raczyński of 1796 to the clergy and faithful of the Poznań   diocese.

Poznań bishops resided mainly in Warsaw, in the Masovian part. The diocesan office in the years 1768–1780 was held by Andrew Stanislaus Młodziejowski and in the years 1780–1793 by Anthony Onuphrius Okęcki, both involved in state issues, includ- ing the post of crown chancellors. Pontifical duties were performer mainly by bishops suffragan, while the diocese was managed by general curates. The cathedral chapter in Poznań, constituted by 10 prelates and 23 canons, was the elite of the clergy. In addition to that, there were other bodies of clergy like curates, penitentiaries, two missionary colleges, rorantists and altarists. Collegiate chapters existed in three churches in Poznań, as well as in Warsaw, Środa Wielkopolska (Great Poland), Szamotuły and Czarnków. The area of the diocese was divided in to four archdeaconships - Poznań, Śrem, Pszczew and Warsaw - each divided into deaconships, amounting to the number of twenty nine. Within the territory of the diocese there were 466 parish churches and a significant number of churches and chapels of various character, with an abundance of priests. The clergymen derived mainly from the townspeople, and delegates of the bishop visiting the parishes positively assessed their moral conduct. In 1772 there were 78 male monasteries with 1549 monks and 17 female monasteries in the whole diocese.

Opis:
W marcu 1917 r. na siódmej konferencji biskupów katolickich z Królestwa Polskiego z okazji setnej rocznicy powstania archidiecezji warszawskiej (1817) doszło do wydarzenia bez precedensu, mianowicie pierwszego zjazdu episkopatu polskiego w okresie zaborów.
The presented text introduces selected aspects of activities of the Catholic Church in Poland during the First World War. All actions taken in the Church were based on two basic pillars: prayer and charity work. The Polish issue, i.e. regaining independence, was not without significance. All these phenomena reached the Catholic Church in Poland. Especially charity and philanthropy actions developed by the Church crossed the borders of the partition. The Ducal-Bishops Aid Committee for Those Afflicted by the Defeat of War (in short K.B.K.), established by Bishop Adam Stephen Sapieha, had great merits in this regard. 5 February 1915 the Poznań Committee for Aid to the Kingdom of Poland as part of the National Council was established. Archbishop Edward Likowski became the chairman, and after his death, his successor was Archbishop Edmund Dalbor. The Catholic Church and its bishops actively cooperated with the General Committee for Aid to War Victims in Poland, which was established in Lausanne on 9 January 1915. The action planned for November 1915 was the greatest echo of the cooperation between the Catholic Church and the Sienkiewicz Committee. In March 1917 at the seventh conference of Catholic bishops from the Kingdom of Poland on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the foundation of the Archdiocese of Warsaw (1817), an unprecedented event took place, namely the first congress of the Polish episcopate during the partitions. The clergy constituted a group integrating the people inhabiting three separate state organisms after the fall of the Republic of Poland. Priests to a great extent led the Polish nation in communication through the period of partitions and during the First World War. Thanks to this, the new state could successfully reborn at the end of 1918.
