The article discusses the problem of recent changes in so-called “teenage culture”. Theoretical bases of the cultural anthropologic conception were provided by Margaret Mead. According to the author, “teenage culture” is different in each type of Mead’s culture types. Insignificant in the post-figurativstage, “teenage culture” is definitelydistinct in configurativetype in terms of separate aesthetics. This is exemplifiedby teenage subcultures, whose members contest dominant culture patterns (associated with adults). The main question concerns the role of “teenage culture” in the pre-figurativeculture – the modern world. Is the difference between the adults’ and young people’s perspectives evident in “teenage culture”? Moreover, is there a real “teenage culture” nowadays?

In this article the pottery obtained from three wells from the settlement in Kwiatków was analyzed. Compared to other sites associated with the Przeworsk culture, this site deserves a special attention due to the presence of over a hundred of artificial water intakes within excavated area. The method of the vessels production, macro and micromorphology characteristics, the degree of their preservation and the level of deposition inside the features were examined in detail. Most of the pottery fragments should be associated with the Przeworsk culture from the Roman Iron Age, however there was also a small percentage of pottery with Jastorf culture elements. The information obtained allowed to define the context of their discovery and to explain its presence inside the well.

The kaleidoscope category adopted in relation to school culture is meant to emphasise the diversity in the identificationof this scientificcategory. I refer to analyses of the definitionsof the term school culture as well as to research perspectives and attempts to specify the notion. As a result, some research areas identifying school culture have been recognised and theoretical and empirical perspectives of the understanding the specificityof school culture have been scrutinised from two separate perspectives. One of them is vertical and includes the history of educational research, in which school culture emerged at the interface of other scientificdisciplines. The other one, horizontal, focuses on the contemporary meaning of research and analyses of school culture in the area of educational studies.

The ‘culture of fear’ constitutes an important environment for mankind. It is an interplay of biological, socio-cultural and linguistic dimensions which, in fact, underlie human existence. The dominance of one subtype of culture with respect to fear, the dystopian culture, pulls mankind into a culture of aggression, competitiveness and intolerance (or into the win-lose perspective). On the other hand, eutopian culture pulls mankind into a culture of non-aggression, cooperation, tolerance and inclusiveness (or into the win-win perspective). In fact, one may easily envisage that a well-functioning human society should remain in a state of balance between the two types of culture and it is the dystopian type of culture that should be kept in check, while the eutopian culture should be favoured if the earth as the carrier of all life, the existing biodiversity, and humanity, are to be sustained.

School culture has recently emerged as a frequent topic of discussion in both academic and quasi-academic circles. It commands attention since educators have realized that the problems that Polish schools face come from a toxic culture in which schools may operate and from the ensuing negative effects of that toxicity. The article has a two-fold aim. First of all, it intends to show the most prominent aspects of school culture in reference to a number of theories. It presents school culture as a critical factor, facilitating school emancipatory processes, particularly in the case of grassroots activities undertaken by the school community. The article states that the awareness of school culture and its processes is a basic condition for any school reforms in Polish education. Secondly, the article describes the nationwide Rok Relacji initiative as an example of a bottom-up project whose goals include promoting the significance of the knowledge of school culture, educating teachers, school heads and parents in this area, and above all encouraging a healthy debate about school culture with a view to sharing experiences regarding grassroots movements in education.

In this paper, the view is proposed that human culture appears fundamental in resolving the problem of ‘the human condition’. Its holistic nature comprises all tangible and intangible aspects, including artefacts, language and communication. It is the culture-language complex which is responsible for the generation of both collective and individual human identity via its locality expressed in a plethora of tangibleintangible manifestations. The regionalism of this complex ought to result in special care of both institutions and individuals who, by demonstrating active involvement on a local scale, are co-responsible for the maintenance of local cultural-linguistic identity. Its vitality is, in turn, more than significant for the maintenance of identity on a larger (e.g. national, global) scale. The aforementioned aspects of regionalism are discussed here on the basis of a review of the content of an encyclopedic outline of Kashubian culture (Bedeker) authored by Tadeusz Bolduan.

Eastern Slavonic cultures are often a conglomeration of patterns of several cultures, which resulted from the past. As Paul Ricouer said, the past is a place of our hidden identity, hurt by the greatest disaster of the twentieth century — bloody regimes. Nazism and bolshevism left their mark on the western world, whose painful consequences we still face today. Bieszczady is a part of Poland, which suffered particularly acutely during and after WWII. It is a place with a kind of a legend, becoming more and more appreciated, because of its tourist attractions, unspoiled nature, magical and largely virginal landscapes. This is a very important area for Slavonic identity, a place with a rich and troubled history — Bieszczady witnesses the actions of the Ukrainian InsurgentArmy and Operation “Vistula”. This article concerns this question, presents excerptsof interviews and memories of participants in those events and shows Bieszczady as a region of the heterogeneous Slavonic culture and a place of memory — both individual and collective.

The article offers a broad overview of Nam-June Paik’s ideas of the expansion of video arts interpreted in the light of Zen Buddhism. His works recognized as the most significant examples of his marriage between the art theory and practice are marked by a thought-provoking vision of participatory culture, communicated in-between the networks in the post-industrial society. Our purpose is to reexamine his attitude to TV culture in the oscillation between Western and Eastern gaze considered in connection to the problems of emptiness and meditation drawn from Zen religious beliefs. In discussing his installations there is special stress to reconstruct his inner-insight into the subject of seeing and watching inscribed in a closed-circuit of the communication network.

During the excavations within the settlement of the Funnel Beaker culture in Poganice, Słupsk county, carried out in the 1970s, two fragments of vessels decorated with band and comb ornament were discovered. This discovery appears to be one of the north-westernmost appearances of such a type of pottery, very common in Chełmno land, and considered to be one of the indicators of the Mątwy group of the Funnel Beaker culture. Their presence at the site of the Łupawa group of the Funnel Beaker culture permits to follow the ways the pottery got into the Łupawa River basin. It might have been via the route along the left side edge of the lower Vistula valley, and further on along the courses of the Wierzyca and Słupia Rivers into Central Pomerania.

The author’s academic goal is to check the effects of a parallel drawn between culture theoreticians known to the audience as writers. Both Umberto Eco (Apocalypse Postponed, Superman in Mass Culture) and Stanisław Barańczak (Incapacitated Reader) presented in their writing measured, non-elitist views of figments of collective imagination by referring to structuralism and semiotics – professional tools applied in literary criticism and cultural studies. The article offers a diagnosis of the position of the texts in question at the time of their origin. It also shows the reception of the ideas of the Polish and Italian literary critics and their creative continuations. A closer look at the specific theories related to terminology (mass culture – elitist culture), the role of the media and concealed rhetoric mechanisms leads to questions about the perspective of research into culture in the courseof dynamic changes.

Children raised in today’s globalised world face an enormous, globally available and diverse range of verbal and non-verbal messages from the outside every day. In the era of prevailing consumerism, this multitude of information creates new, artificial needs that bring chaos to the children’s world. Human needs, as presented by Maslow, starting with physiological needs, through the need of safety, belonging, love, respect, knowledge and recognition are being redefined and disorganised in common understanding. The following considerations outline the result of the analysis of the content and form of several popular culture texts selected from among all the texts available on the Polish market – the Świerszczyk magazine, aimed at children.

The archaeological heritage of Liubech (Lyubech, Chernihiv region, Ukraine) includes various monuments and objects from the Bronze Age to early Modernity (2000 BC – 17th century) with small time gaps. Archaeological surveys in Liubech began in the late 19th century and have continued until today with certain interruptions. Despite the close attention paid by scholars to the archaeological monuments of Liubech, it should be noted that the area of the city within its administrative boundaries (both the floodplain part of the Dnieper River and the densely developed part of the town) has not been sufficiently studied.

In the presented article, the author considers a rarely discussed subject of traditional song lyrics perceived as culture transmitters. Even though they are very universal and comprehensive sources in terms of cultural transmission, academics use them in scientific discourse incommensurately less frequently than other textual forms or art works from the epoch. The author analyzes traditional folk songs as texts which unfold before the reader. Their crucial value and broad possibility to understand different and interfusing realms of human activity associated with Polish and East Slavic culture are presented.

The aim of the study is to evaluate the xenogamous nature of cultural studies. The author is of the opinion that the word xenogamy that belongs to the biological sciences is worth applying in the form of another metaphor, one relating to the concept of culture as such, culture as an abstract category. The history of this word’s usage, and the resultant connotations and denotations of the concept of culture, show that its meaning is not only constantly evolving, expanding or narrowing, but is in addition constantly being ‘pollinated’ by various areas of social practice. Proving the proposed thesis the author presents the selected works on the concept of culture.
