Opis:
Contemporary research on remembrance yields more and more women’s concentration camp testimonies and evidence of their unique character. The names quoted in these materials include Liana Millu (1914-2005), an Italian women of Jewish descent, an Auschwitz-Birkenau and Ravensbrück prisoner. Her work proves that the experience of trauma, though unimaginable, is utterable. Millu resorts to literary fiction to outline life stories of Birkenau women, their typical problems, ways of dealing with tham, as well as the survival strategies thay employed. Liana Millu’s testimony is an unusual attempt to show how women experienced the trauma of the camp.

displaced memory
Opis:
Today’s studies on memory encourage multidirectional memory, which assumes the transdisciplinary perspective and permits new understanding of texts which address traumatic events of the previous century. This is so in the case of Evelyne Pollet (1905-2005). Her largely autobiographical novel Grandes vacances en Angleterre (1945) is a record of a Belgian refugee family’s stay in Great Britain during World War One. This would not be particularly interesting if it had not been for the fact that the author does it near the end of the second global conflict. Her return to the events of 1914 1918 is not coincidental. Pollet purposefully turns the reader’s attention away from the inglorious chapters of her biography, her close ties with the collaborators’ literary milieu, and her intensive editorial work during the occupation. Grandes vacances en Angleterre is an example of instrumental approach to the type of memory referred to ‘displaced memory’.

Opis:
Savitzkaya, hardly known to French public, delights contemporary readers with his style, displaying both peculiar and variegated characteristics. Although he dispenses with the matters of genre, his latest texts (Célébration d’un mariage improbable et illimité, 2002, Exquise Louise, 2003, Fou trop poli, 2005) are still thought to represent the novel. His peculiarity lies in that he contrasts a daily routine with brilliantly worked form, nevertheless well suited to depict it. His predilection for language is pervasive in his style, showing strong preference for details (still, it stands in a stark contrast to the practice of the Nouveaux Romanciers of the 20th century). Savitzkaya asserts himself with the aid of conciseness, draws to a large extent upon surprising stylistic devices, juggles with words, even if paying careful attention to their precision. Finally, he acts as a genuine poet, reviving fragrances and colors of childhood. All in all, the whole of his work is designed to bring his readers to take pleasure in living.

Opis:
Over the period directly following the Second World War, continuity and discontinuity were closely interwoven in the Walloon literature. From one hand, esthetic models from Interwar period were still present and no novel concepts appeared in the writings of Walloon authors. From the other, however, a large number of new State-run institutions were inaugurated. The hardships suffered during the war, seen mainly as an instance of disruption, are abundantly described in literary works, especially in testimonies. It is in this context that Arthur Haulot, Belgian poet and novelist, made prisoner and taken to Dachau, created his literary poignant output. His writings are marked by harsh experiences undergone in camps.

Comment le témoignage devient une œuvre littéraire: Le cas de Robert Antelme et de Primo Levi

Opis:
Can a testimony, a text similar to a document, be a literary work? The answer to this question is definitely positive in the case of R. Antelme (L'espèce humaine) and P. Levi (Se questo è un uomo) who relate their experience from a concentration camp. These authors, remaining faithful to the truth, do not neglect aesthetic requirements, using known narrative techniques and skillfully maintaining the tension characteristic of literary texts. They use an innovative form of narration. It is fragmentary and broken, which fully reflects the character of the prisoners' fate. Finally, a new conception of humanity and a deep reflection on human nature (the titles are meaningful themselves) prove the literary character of both texts.

For the prisoners of the concentration camps winter with its seasonal attributes as the icy cold or snow is more than a meteorogical phenomenon. The arrival of winter not only announces the annihilation of the prisonners, but also and perhaps above all their dashing and the unspeakable suffering to come out. In this paper we wish to study in the light of such authors as Robert Antelme, Charlotte Delbo, Primo Levi, David Rousset and Jorge Semprún how the hard weather conditions are able to redraw the space and the prisoners’Horizon of despair.

Opis:
The problem of presenting the traumatic experience of deportation and detention in a concentration camp is still painfully topical, the more so that hitherto existing methods and linguistic strategies provide no useful tools for its investigation, being either frustratingly ineffective, or altogether useless. Over time, a certain regularity in handling the problem has become noticeable, i.e. a distinctive separation of the available accounts of the experience into those provided by women and those evidenced by men. The answer to the question of how to narrate has to be then preceded by an appropriate question on social, cultural and gender identity of the narrator. On the basis of the exemplary accounts by four former inmates of the concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau it is possible to understand the specificity and uniqueness of feminine perception of the camp’s reality. The accounts provided by Charlotte Delbo, Liana Millu, Seweryna Szmaglewska and Krystyna Żywulska — all easily identifiable by the different adopted form of message conveyance — share the specificity of women’s subjects raised, aspects closely related to the structure of a woman and her existence in responding to extreme conditions, often omitted in accounts provided by male witnesses. Camp pregnancies, dramatic deliveries, pseudo-scientific experiments, rapes and prostitution — all these constitute additional themes related to by women, victims to the above.
