The paper explores the style of a selection of contemporary Czech scientific texts representing contemporary Czech scientific discourse, which comprises professional monological monographs written in Czech in the last decade. Through exploring a re- presentative selection of texts, our research endeavoured to verify the occurrence or non-occurrence of linguistic concern which is deliberately used in contemporary Czech scientific discourse to interrupt (1) the emotional and stylistic neutrality and (2) the relative comprehensiveness, lucidity and clarity of the professional expression. Linguistic concern and stylistic activation in contemporary professional texts are in most cases signalled graphically, by quotation marks. The authors thus indicate to the recipient the occurrence of a stylistic marker, or generally dissimilarity of stylistic norms. Formal separation of the device from the text is an important dialogical means connecting the author and the recipient of scientific discourse. Most often it features simplifying terminology; (non)exact expression; complementarity; the vacillating or transient terminology in the field. The authors use quotation marks to signal graphically not only means that are contradictory to scientific style, such as professionalisms; expressions meaning ‘so as to say’; imprecise, ambigous and vague expressions (which in humanities and social sciences occur in the foundation text); but also means of expression conveying subjectivity and expressivity; sporadically meta- phors. Humanities and social sciences even feature graphically signalled authorian detachment from the content; hyperbole; or possibly irony. The stylistic activity of the quoted means of expression consists in their manifest contextual stylistic value. Manifest activity of diverse linguistic means separated by quotation marks represent the most forceful way to activate the neutral presentation of present-day Czech profesional texts. Their frequency and stylistic activity in all excerpted monographs in the defined groups of fields confirm the authorial ambition to achieve a more original diction of professional discourse. The graphical distinction from the foundation text proves the continuous respect for the stylistic norms of theoretically professional communication.

The study starts from the premise that within the dynamic of personality system character is mainly an acquired subsystem that is the outcome of self and social construction. On a continuum that represents the interaction between innate and acquired factors the study posits that character is mostly constructed while temperament is mostly given. The research is focused on long-term personal experiences that aimed explicitly to develop one’s own character. Taking into account the theoretical framework of Petersen and Seligman (2004) that distinguishes between strengths and virtues the present model of character includes three dimensions and an orienting principle. The three dimensions are: a) strength-weakness; b) goodness-evilness; c) transparency versus opacity. A strong character could be good or evil, transparent or opaque. All these dimensions are related to self-tested orienting principles such as (Truth, Love, Justice, Non-violence).

Common awareness of threats and dangers, which has become an integral part of nature and mankind, has caused the situation when determination to guarantee safety makes this value timeless. According to H. Kissinger the notion of safety is nowadays ‘the foundation of every human action’. That is why, in literature, one can see a very wide scope of safety categories in its defining. The aim of the article is the attempt to explain the notion and to show the essence of safety. Taking into consideration ambiguity of the notion of safety, attention has been directed to its description as the state. At the same time, safety has been described as a process where the state of safety and its organization are subjects of dynamic transformations proportionally to changes in safety conditions. Importance of geopolitical evolution and the progress of science and technology in the last decade of 20th century for transformation of views concerning creation of contemporary national security has been stressed. Realities of 21st century cause that safety of society depends mainly on global and national security. That is why the synthesis of contemporary description of national security has been presented, taking into consideration social category, functional and structural meaning. The attempt of theoretical presentation of the term of safety leads to fundamental conclusions. Firstly, safety undergoes the laws of social systems movements. Secondly, the phenomenon should be analysed thoroughly, noticing its subjective, objective and spatial diversity.

Interdisciplinary studies on disability are conducted in the world by scholars from different disciplines and sub-disciplines, including special education. This article deals with an analysis of the evolution of the concept of disability studies and its’ implementation in anthropology that was narrowed to cultural anthropology, primarily of American roots with references to British social anthropology. The basic question, which I answer from the perspective of the cultural anthropologists, is formulated as follows: why cultural anthropology is important in the disability studies? I give answers in the context of: ontological, epistemological, rhetorical and political issues. Anthropological analyzes are preceded by definitions of disability studies after Stteven aylor, Bonnie Shoultz, Pamela Walker; Colin Barnes; Dan Goodley; Sharon L. Snyder; David T. Mitchell and Ronald J. Berger.

Among all the different types of penalties that exist in the various juridical systems around the world, capital punishment, also known as the death penalty, is one of the most controversial ones. The discussion about its legitimacy and legality crosses social, philosophical, cultural, religious and historical fields. The present article aims to first analyze how capital punishment is treated in different parts of the world, whether it is present or not, and to later on focus on the attempts to justify such a harsh punishment, by both the retributive and utilitarian theories of punishment.

This article refers to the problems of disputes over the concept of a literary character and theory (in humanities). The reference to the historical perspective becomes an occasion for the presentation of an attitude which stems from post-modern reflection: the metaphysical (essential) claims are put forward both to the subject and to the manner of studies, they are lifted for the sake of pragmatic and hermeneutic interpretations within this which the author calls weak theories (and the conception of weakness is here in a distinct relationship with philosophical proposals formulated by Gianni Vattura).

Society takes place in cities and shapes them. The “city” is commonly attributed with certain objectified qualities, daily practices, perceptions and symbolic readings and is strongly linked to institutional arrangements. As various transformation forces and processes can be observed in contemporary cities, the question arises: what instruments and possibilities can be identified for steering urban structures and development by means of urban policy? The current shift away from a top down oriented city administration and planning towards the participatory governance suggests that cities are facing new challenges and requirements that are closely associated with a political dimension. The possibilities of influencing and steering urban development by urban planning and policy and participation as one element of those control options will be discussed in this paper. In order to understand the role and scope of new urban governance the societal context that frames contemporary cities will be outlined. Starting from the characteristics of new urban governance modes it will be discussed why governance and participation can be understood as reaction to the network society and its challenges of the established nation-state based democracy, traditional power relations and legitimation of political processes and institutions.

Autorka w podjętej w artykule narracji stawia pytania na temat pedagogiki jako dyscypliny naukowej zwróconej ku budowaniu teorii - wiedzy teoretycznej wyjaśniającej procesy wychowania. Akcentuje fakt, że z teoriopoznawczej perspektywy, praktyka poznawcza i oczekiwania wobec walorów eksplanacyjnych twierdzeń formułowanych przez teorię odwołują się do możliwości teoretycznego uogólnienia i klasyfikowania świata społecznego, czy też przekładania tez teoretycznych na grunt poznania empirycznego w celu ich weryfikacji, jak również wyjaśniania zjawisk poprzez identyfikację mechanizmów przyczynowych i ujawnianych procesów. Zdolność eksplanacyjną teorii określa  się przez rozpoznanie wielkości zakresu rzeczywistości do którego teoria ma zastosowanie. Czyniąc pedagogikę równorzędną innym naukom społecznym niepodobna nie zaakcentować dodatkowej wartości i osobliwości budowania teorii w pedagogice, a mianowicie: teoria naukowa budowana na gruncie pedagogiki nie ogranicza się do opisu i eksplantacji zjawisk i procesów lecz zwrócona jest ku antycypacji zdarzeń, wypływu na ich przebieg oraz użyteczność dla praktyki.
The author in the article poses questions regarding pedagogy as a research discipline turned towards the construction of theory – theoretical knowledge explaining the processes of upbringing. She emphasizes the fact that from the theoretical-cognitive perspective, cognitive practice and expectations of the exploratory value of statements formulated by the theory refer to the possibility of theoretical generalization and classification of the social world. Also they offer translation of theoretical theses into the ground of empirical cognition in order to verify them, as well as to explain phenomena through the identification of causal mechanisms and revealed processes. The exploratory capacity of a theory is determined by recognizing the size of the scope of reality to which the theory applies. Making pedagogy equal to other social sciences, it is impossible not to emphasize the additional value and peculiarity of theory construction in pedagogy, namely: the research theory constructed on the ground of pedagogy is not limited to the description and explanation of phenomena and processes, but it is directed towards anticipation of events, influence on their course and their usefulness for practice.

Forensic psycholinguistics is an emerging interdisciplinary subject that makes use of the psychological methods to analyze the linguistic phenomena in legal activities and therefore it is of the multiple and cross-disciplinary nature. In ancient Chinese culture there were written expressions with thoughts of forensic psycholinguistics and its practices. In Western countries the research started from European societies at the end of 19th century when Münsterberg and Cattell and some other scholars acted as the pioneers of this domain. After the WWII the research center of forensic psycholinguistics gradually moved to the United States where the research of legal psychology and the use of psychological methods greatly facilitate the study and practices of forensic psycholinguistics. Its study object aims at the linguistic behavior in such legal activities as legislation, judicial, the obeying of the law and transgression, and its task should be the research on the behavior of the legal language in both levels of consciousness and unconsciousness. The construction of the system for forensic psycholinguistics should start from the perspectives of linguistic psychology of legislation, judicial, the enforcement and obeying of the law and the legal publicity so that a cross-cultural emerging subject with its values of practical application could be created.

Researchers in the field of instructed second language acquisition have been examining the issue of how learners interact with input by conducting research measuring particular kinds of instructional interventions (input-oriented and meaning-based). These interventions include such things as input flood, textual enhancement and processing instruction. Although the findings are not completely conclusive on whether these instructional interventions have an impact on acquisition, it is clear that we have witnessed a shift in the field from the original question “Does instruction make a difference?” to the more specific question “Does manipulating input make a difference?” In this article, the key classroom-based research conducted to measure the relative effects of different types of enhancement and manipulation is reviewed. Three main research foci are considered: (a) research measuring the effects of saturating the input with the target form (input flood), (b) research measuring the effects of different types of textual enhancements to draw learners’ attention to the target form, and (c) research measuring input restructuring to improve interpretation and processing of target forms or structures (processing instruction).
