    Questioning the commonly held assumption in critical reception that Ibsenʼs symbol of the wild duck was influenced by Darwinʼs theory, I want to argue that the wild duck flew into Ibsenʼs play all the way from Platoʼs aporetic dialogue The Theaetetus. Following Lacanʼs reading of Plato, I want to examine the connection between the Socratic position towards knowledge – especially the rupture between knowledge and truth – and the treatment of dramatic dialogue in Ibsenʼs The Wild Duck and Krležaʼs The Glembays.

    The basic and main topic of this research paper is the cult of St. Martyr Mina, especially his ability to tame the wild beasts-the wolves. The starting point of this paper is publication, written by V. Popovska Korobar about the wall paintings from the XV century in the monastery church St. Petka in the village of Brajchino, region of Prespa in Macedonia. In this church the saint is portrayed with some fairly rare iconographic elements that out framed the usual monumental painting of that time – the saint is portrayed as a victorious handler of tamed wild beasts. Popovska Korobar supposes that this kind of interpretation is related with the saint’s life in the desert together with the wild animals, or with the description of the beast in the existing literature about her life in Egypt – the monster with a camel’s head, and she does not identify the species of the animals depicted on the wall of the church. According to our research, this type of iconography is created and based upon the hagiographic texts in combination with the folklore identity of St. Mina and according to that, we think that the wild beasts are tamed wolves.

    The aim of this paper is to analyze antique testimonies documenting the relationships between soldiers and the wild and strange animals that armies encountered on the march, in military camps, on the battlefield and during clashes at sea. Thus the paper highlights one of the aspects in the daily life of soldiers of the Greco-Roman world. In a broader sense, the study combines historical research with ethological inquiry.

    Domalewski Adam, Portret młodego pisarza oraz nawiązania do twórczości Antona Czechowa w Dzikiej gruszy Nuriego Bilge Ceylana [Portrait of a Young Writer and References to European Literature in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s The Wild Pear Tree]. „Przestrzenie Teorii” 32. Poznań 2019, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 343–355. ISSN 1644-6763. DOI 10.14746/pt.2019.32.18. The article focuses on topics related to literature, especially to the works of Anton Chekhov, in the latest film by Nuri Bilge Ceylan The Wild Pear Tree. Its main character, Sinan, is a young writer, while the film is set in the province of Çanakkale, where ancient Troy was located. The analysis of the picture shows that the director refers to the historicity of the myth of the Trojan War with distrust. Instead, Ceylan portrays a local community immersed in intellectual stagnation and creates his hero as an extremely unlikeable misanthropist, to whom literature cannot bring fulfillment. The character of his father, Idris, introduces another ancient motif to the film – the figure of Sisyphus. The relationship between father and son, which deepens in the finale, brings an unexpected note of optimism to the picture, which in its dramaturgy resembles Anton Chekhov’s literary worlds.

    The article focuses on worldbuilding techniques used in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in order to create a self-contained fictional world. Firstly, an overview of the characteristics of game spaces is provided. Secondly, following a brief introduction to Andrzej Sapkowski’s fiction, the article discusses the design methods the game uses for representing topography, architecture, human and nonhuman activity, as well as for providing background information about various locations. It is concluded that the game space may be seen as an independent ontological construct and not only a framework for gameplay.
    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie metod tworzenia świata wykorzystanych w grze Wiedźmin 3: Dziki Gon, które pozwoliły na wypracowanie samodzielnej fikcyjnej konstrukcji. Pierwsza część tekstu omawia cechy miejsc w grach wideo. Następnie, po krótkim wprowadzeniu do twórczości Andrzeja Sapkowskiego, artykuł przedstawia sposoby, za pomocą których Wiedźmin 3 imituje topografię, architekturę, ludzką i pozaludzką działalność oraz dostarcza informacje o poszczególnych lokacjach. Omówione właściwości tytułu sprawiają, że miejsca stworzone na potrzeby gry tworzą niezależny ontologiczny konstrukt, a nie wyłącznie szkielet umożliwiający rozgrywkę.

    The Dutch Partij voor de Dieren (Party for the Animals), the only political party devoted to animals in the world, wants to take wild as well as domestic animals under its wing and, hence, to remove the traditional dividing line between both domains. How can the Animal Party at the same time claim to stand up for the interests of animals as individuals as well as for the particular interests of wild animals? Rather than perceiving wild animals as mere components of wider entities, the Animal Party starts to personalize wild animals at the moment that their wellbeing can be detected and actively improved.

    In this article I analyze the interface of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with regard to its transparency as well as its influence on the player’s  immersion. Furthermore, I scrutinize all measures used by the interface to decrease the effect of emersion, which might appear as game information is being read by the player. I also consider the literary context in my research – I reflect on how the interface refers to Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher cycle and how these references have been implemented in the interface structure.
    W swoim artykule badam interfejs gry Wiedźmin 3: Dziki Gon pod względem jego transparentności, a także wpływu na immersję gracza. Analizuję też zabiegi ukierunkowane na niwelowanie emersji, która może wystąpić, gdy gracz odczytuje informacje prezentowane przez interfejs. W badaniach biorę pod uwagę również kontekst literacki – zastanawiam się, w jaki sposób interfejs nawiązuje do wiedźmińskiego cyklu Andrzeja Sapkowskiego oraz jak owe nawiązania zostały zaimplementowane do struktury interfejsu.

    The article reconstructs poetics and politics of Polish westerns, focussing on the two most re-nowned examples of the genre: The Law and the Fist (1964) or The Wolves' Echoes (1968). They are set in the western or eastern   borderlands of post-war Poland (1945–1948) and depict the struggles of righteous militiamen against plunderers and looters. The analysis is based on classical theories formulated by A. Bazin, J. Kitses and W. Wright and aims to highlight hidden contradic-tions between the rules of film genre, the requirements of veracity, and propagandist manipula-tion. These movies reinforce the official politics of memory of the Polish People’s Republic. The Law and the Fist contribute to the discourse on the ‘Recovered Territories’ and renew the Piast concept of returning these territories to the traditional Polish homeland. In turn, The Wolves' Echoes shapes the collective memory of the Bieszczady Mountains and justifies ethnic homogene-ity of this borderland.

    The following review article brings a presentation of the published in 2018 encyclopaedia of Czech literary samizdat. The analysed publication consists of two parts – a comprehensive introduction discussing the question of independent literary culture in Czechoslovakia under communist regime pressure and an entry section with more than 300 entries about Czech independent self-publishing activities. The presentation of the following book provokes the need to re-examine the phenomenon of Czech samizdat, reflecting on its chronological framework, definition, meaning and role in creating and keeping alive an independent culture in the era of domination of the communist regime (1948–1989).
