The article briefly presents a series of problems discussed in the dissertation entitled Свето и пропадљиво. Тело у српској хагиографској књижевности (Holy and Worldly. Body in Serbian Hagiographic Literature) by Smilja Marjanović-Dušanić. Dedicated to a wide professional and non-professional audience, the book in question is a significant scientific work since it refers not only to the historical, but also to the anthropological and culturological description related to the activity of decoding of such essential socio-cultural category like body. Considered as a highly complex phenomenon, body is a sign generated by the realm of various traditions and discourses which render different cultural modes or primary and secondary contexts; it might be also conceived as a distinctive signature of given time-space, community and cultural system. It will not be an exaggeration to say that the dissertation is an extremely interesting and indeed outstanding study of the subject which impresses with its high cognitive value and research rank. What is more, it offers a serious and objective view of the convoluted and multidimensional cultural phenomenon and identity construct.

The paper discusses selected Lower Sorbian idiomatic expressions with somatic components. The author talks about somatisms and somatic phraseology in general, as well as presents different types of idiomatic motivation. A theoretical section is followed by the presentation of a corpus of somatic idioms taken fromDolnoserbsko-nimski słownik/Niedersorbisch-deutsches Wörterbuch by Manfred Starosta. The analysis of the idiomatic expressions shows how Lower Sorbian somatic phraseological units make use of somatic lexemes, as well as demonstrates the various types of motivation behind the actual senses of the examined expressions.

Emotion may be treated as a special sort of message considering that communicative function is one of the basic functions of emotion. Moreover emotion serves as a message in two ways. In one way facial expression of emotion is a message to other participants of social interaction that contains information about the emotional state of the subject and thus plays important interpersonal role. It shows the subject’s personal attitude and amplifies verbal messages or makes them more credible. Numerous empirical studies show that processes of generating and perceiving of facial expressions of emotions are autonomic and specific. In the other way emotion is an internal message containing information about the significance of events or thoughts and thus helping in making choices or taking decissions.

The aim of the article is to present and analyze the selected phraseologisms with a somatic component naming feelings which were noted down from the novel of Władysław Stanisław Reymont entitled Chłopi (“The Peasants”). The analysis comprised 175 examples excerpted from the text, constituting just a part of collected research material. Compilation and organization of the exemplary material made it possible to assert that in the studied text the largest group constitute somatic phraseologisms being the designations of negative feelings and possessing in their lexical composition the noun serce (heart). Much less often there appear phraseologisms with other names of body parts, such as skóra (skin), gardziel (throat), głowa (head) or włosy (hair). In most cases the studied somatic phraseologisms occur in the canonical form, sometimes are creatively transformed by the author. In the studied material, the somatic phraseologisms designating positive feelings constitute a less numerous group. Also in this group, there dominate the compounds with a component serce (heart), while with other somatic components are less numerous. Also in this group, the idiomatic phrases occur in canonical forms or are creatively transformed by the author. Research conducted in the group of somatic phraseologisms designating emotional states enabled scholars to state that the novel of Reymont provides rich phraseological material in the form of canonical compounds, functionally justified innovation and metaphorical expressions, which, with respect to their structure and function, resemble phraseologisms. Among the phraseologisms where the writer’s intervention is noticeable, the author—at the level of language—refers to the world of values and cultural behaviours of peasant community of the village of Lipce. What is more, referring in the description of feelings to somatic phraseology, Reymont also emphasises a vital relationship between subjectively experienced feelings and an accompanying physiological reaction by an organism.

The aim of the article is to present research and theories, which explain why nonverbal behavior, and especially body language, plays the crucial role in regulating communication among people. Firstly, research area will be outlined. An overview of face-to-face communication as a central domain of research in communication studies will be proposed. Secondly, the paper presents the main thesis in human science and in communication studies in particular. According to these thesis body is the main factor of communication process and thus, should be placed in center of the communication research. It means that body regulates what people are intending, feeling, thinking and saying during interaction with other people. It is actually an reversion of verbo-centric approach, which was the most popular and still used in linguistic approach to communication. In order to organize the body-oriented approach, two conceptions will be proposed: sign-symptom distinction and two-channel communication model. The conclusion of this paper is that science of communictation enters a new phase which could be called somatic paradigm.

Příspěvek se zabývá tzv. somatickými frazémy, jež jsou založeny na bázovém lexému ruka. Pro potřeby tohoto příspěvku bylo analyzováno užití jednoho konkrétního spojení, a to v rukou. Jazykový materiál pro excerpci poskytl archiv mluvených pořadů Českého rozhlasu, konkrétně zpravodajské pořady Rozhlasové noviny z roku 1977 a Ozvěny dne z roku 1997; pro porovnání byla využita i data z Českého národního korpusu z týchž let. Cílem je postihnout poměr doslovného a metaforického užití vybrané vazby, kvalitativně analyzovat sémantické profily, v nichž se vyskytuje, a identifikovat případný ideologický podtext.
The paper deals with somatic idioms based on Czech lexeme ruka (hand). For the analysis a collocation v rukou (i.e. in hands) was chosen. Analyzed data come especially from Czech Radio news 1977 and 1997 (from a demo version of the platform being developed for automatic transcription and sophisticated access to historical audio archive of the Czech Radio), and from the Czech National Corpora. The analysis should demonstrate a ratio between basic and figurative meaning of the chosen collocation, its semantic profiles, and should reveal potential ideological implicit meaning.

Dostrzeżono ich wydajność oraz mobilność słowotwórczą. Wskazano perspektywy dalszych badań, albowiem terminy z komponentami somatycznymi wymagają prześledzenia ich wydajności i mobilności.
Ukrainian medical terms-composites with international components cephal-, medul(o)-, menin-, mening (o)- have been analyzed in the article. The problem of their interchange with the Ukrainian equivalents has been brought up. Their productivity and word formation mobility have been defi ned. The prospect of this research is that terms with the somatic components require studying of their productivity and mobility.

Somatic idioms – those including a part of the body – have been traditionally studied from a synchronic perspective, yielding different explanations for their semantic value. The main objective of this paper is to highlight the diachronic origin of idiomatic meaning, by illustrating the process of phraseologization from a historical, usage-based perspective. As the first step, we will reflect on the general nature of phraseological meaning, and then on the semantic particularities of somatic idioms. Secondly, we will carry out a corpus-based diachronic analysis of the Catalan idiom tapar-se el nas (to hold one’s nose) within the framework of the Invited Inference Theory of Semantic Change. The different stages of the process will be exemplified and discussed. As a result, a new notion of somatic idioms as frozen human actions will be presented.

The article addresses the issue of a body language as a semiotic code and its reflection in systems of natural languages, in their phraseological resources. The material for analysis is phraseological units of contemporary Polish and Russian languages. The basis for comparison is the phraseological concept by Weronika N. Telia (В.Н. Телия) and linguistic works by Grigorij E. Krejdlin (Г.Е. Крейдлин). First and foremost, three types of signs of the body language are verbalised in subsystems under analysis: bodily symptoms, symptomatic and communicative gestures and a body position.

The essay undertakes to investigate the phenomenon of erotic friendship as an “intertextual friendship” and, at the same time, “somatic (mis) understanding” (German: Un-beziehung). The following considerations include a discussion on the relationship between Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud, viewed first of all as bohemian characters of bohemian life and the protagonists of the mitologised homo-erotic relationship. Beside a hermeneutic attempt at describing the intimacy shared by both poets, or stages in the development of their intimate relations (with reference to French literature of the subject and texts that have not yet been translated into Polish), the author writes extensively on the reception of the relationship of the legendary pair of friends-lovers A-war period, Agnieszka Holland’s film Total eclipse and the most recent poetical texts by Ewa Sonnenberg. The essay is complemented by some considerations on similar cases, analogous to the instance of the relationship between the two French poets: epistolary romance between R.M. Rilke and M. Tsvetaeva and, important within the context of the reception of Rimbaud in Poland — love/friendship exhibited in the letters between Andrzej Czajkowski and Anita Janowska.

The main intention of my text is to describe the specific of the somatic turn of cultural studies and, to follow Chris Barker’s proposition, “the desire to understand the ways in which the body becomes the object of shaping and disciplining by social and cultural forces – i.e. how the body acquires meaning in contemporary culture”. The above problem provokes the consideration of the mutual relationships between the culture of late modernity and the category of identity (especially the body in the process of identity construction). The goal outlined in this way aims to present contexts and space for the manifestation of the issues of the body in contemporary culture, The aim of the proposed deliberations is to present the problem of the body from the perspective of reflexive identity (A. Giddens), constructivism perspective (Z. Melosik, A. Gromkowska, M. Bogunia-Borowska), in selected therapeutic systems (J. Kabat-Zinn, A. Lowen, S.&C. Block) and in the final section I present the category of the body in the integral approach to development (K. Wilber). Also, I shortly summarize my analysis and I point to the dangers of the presented approaches especially in the dominant instant culture practices.

The author analyses Fryderyk Chopin’s correspondence within the context of the new humanities field of body studies. The socio-cultural anthropology of the body has been an object of study since the 1980s. It has enabled the extraction of the picture of a cultural body inscribed in Chopin’s correspondence, and it has also shown how his conception of his own soma and of the bodies of other people diverge from the Romantic convention of writing about corporeality. In the age of romanticism, sickness and physical weakness were glorified like a gift and a badge of spiritual aristocracy. A suffering and frail complexion became a value in the salons - a laissezpasser to the world of artistic sensitivity. Chopin never succumbed to that fashion. His record of his corporeal experience is strikingly un-Romantic, as can be seen, for example, when comparing it with the narration of sickness contained in the correspondence of Zygmunt Krasiński. The corporeal experience displayed by the great musician is striking in its modernity. Chopin rejects the Romantic lyricisation of sickness; his utterances are pithy, dominated by sarcasm and even physiological brutality, and the style of his description of corporeality employs grotesqueness, irony and absurdity. Human subjectivity sensed through the body paints a picture of a fragmentary, disharmonious self; people reveal themselves to the eyes of others not as a whole, but as an abbreviation, a representative detail. Visions of mechanised bodies, whose behaviour and actions are hyperbolised by the musician, bring us - especially during the last years of Chopin’s life - into a world where corporeality is a source of strangeness, and even repugnance. In the conclusion of the article, the author denies that Chopin’s music can be directly translated into a moving picture: she states that neither his illness nor any other experiences of his bodily existence can be treated in an illustrative way that purports to “illuminate” his music directly.

Štúdia prispieva k bližšiemu poznaniu jedného zo spôsobov obohacovania lexiky – tvorenia slov kompozíciou. Zdôrazňuje fakt, že kompozícia a kompozitá (najmä vybrané typy) zastávajú dôležité miesto v slovnej zásobe slovanských jazykov a v porovnaní s deriváciou a syntetickými derivátmi v posledných desaťročiach posilňujú svoje postavenie, a to v rozličných typoch komunikátov. Poukazuje na heterogénnosť pomenovaní analyzovaných typov kompozít a zároveň predstavuje teoretické východiská aplikované na kompozitá a zložky ich slovotvornej štruktúry. V štúdii je do podoby samostatných hesiel spracovaných deväť komponentov, ktoré spája somatický význam a postavenie v iniciálovej pozícii. Spracovanie hesiel sa opiera o rozsiahly výskum lexikálneho materiálu v neologických prameňoch, národných korpusoch a lexikografických dielach troch jazykov – slovenčiny, poľštiny a češtiny. Heslá sú zároveň východiskom pre viacaspektový opis somatických komponentov (najmä z hľadiska významu, polysémie, pôvodu, variantnosti), ako aj ilustrujúceho lexikálneho materiálu (predovšetkým z hľadiska kompozitnosti, neologickosti, ortografickej variantnosti, príslušnosti ku komunikačným registrom).
The study contributes to a closer understanding of one of the ways of enriching lexicon – the formation of words by composition. It emphasizes the fact that composition and compounds (especially selected types) are of great importance in the vocabulary of Slavic languages and they – in comparison to derivation and synthetic derivatives – have strengthened their position in various types of discourse in recent decades. The study points out the heterogeneity of names of the analysed types of compounds and at the same time it presents the theoretical basis applied to compounds and components of their word-forming structure. In the study, nine components with somatic meaning and initial position are compiled as separate entries. The processing of entries is based on extensive research of lexical material in neological sources, national corpora and lexicographic works of three languages – Slovak, Polish and Czech. Entries are also the basis for a multi-perspective description of somatic components (especially in terms of meaning, polysemy, origin and variability), as well as illustrative lexical material (especially in terms of composite and neological character, orthographic variability, affiliation with communication registers).

Artykuł skupia się na mikroanalizie jednej z rękopiśmiennych „notek bólowych” Aleksandra Wata (datowanej na 8 grudnia, zachowanej w archiwum pisarza w Beinecke Library). Rozważam zarówno kwestię jej genologicznego przyporządkowania, które – ze względu na fragmentaryczność, wyrywkowość, dziennikowość zapisu (a jednocześnie umieszczenie jej poza ustabilizowaną formą dziennika) – nie zmierza do włączenia jej w żadną większą całość. „Nieprzynależność” notki i innych analogicznych zapisów zdaje się kształtować ich swoistą poetykę. Posiłkując się rozpoznaniami poststrukturalnej genologii i teorią zbiorów rozmytych, proponuję uznać notkę za swoisty gatunek dryfujący, który istnieje w wielu kontekstach genologicznych jednocześnie, tworząc także własną, „pojedynczą” formę. Zainspirowana rozważaniami o cielesności Jean-Luca Nancy’ego oraz krytyką somatyczną Adama Dziadka, chciałabym określić ją mianem „engramu ciała”. Na przykładzie wyizolowanej „notki bólowej” zastanawiam się zatem nad możliwością użycia tej kategorii w kontekście zarówno rekonstruowania genetyki tekstu, jak i dokonywania przykładowej rytmoanalizy prozy.
The article focuses on the microanalysis of one of Aleksander Wat’s handwritten “pain notes” (dated December 8, Wat’s archive at the Beinecke Library). I discuss the note’s genological classification, which – due to fragmentation, randomness, and the very nature of the diary entry (and at the same the fact that it eludes this classification) – may not really be considered part of a larger whole. The “non-belonging” of the note and other similar notes seems to influence their poetics. Drawing on the findings of post-structural genology and the theory of fuzzy sets, I propose to see the note as a fuzzy genre that exists in many genological contexts at the same time and also gives rise its own “singular” form. Inspired by Jean-Luc Nancy’s reflections on corporeality and Adam Dziadek’s somatic criticism, I define the note as an “engram of the body.” I analyze an isolated “pain note” as an example and consider the possibility of using this category both in the context of reconstructing the genetics of the text and performing an exemplary rhythmic analysis of prose.

Based on the example of Darren Aronofsky’s film Black Swan, the article explores the disillusive potential of interfering with the classic model of film dramaturgy. Referring to the traditional paradigm developed by Syd Field, the author indicates deviations from the conventional narrative that occur in Aronofsky’s film. The text seeks to confirm the thesis that contemporary cinematography exemplifies the trend of abandoning the attempts to create a seemingly referential world. By questioning the fundamental structure of the film’s dramaturgy, Black Swan provides additional interpretive possibilities. However, displaying the constituent elements of a work, for example, by transaccentuating their meaning or changing their place or length of occurrence, is not the most obvious disillusionment strategy. It may in fact remain hidden until the moment of careful analysis.
