The text is concentrated on relations between concepts of privacy and solitude nowadays. The author claimed that privacy replaced traditional metaphors and images of solitude like island, mountain or dessert. Protection of privacy and bringing it to the limelight, privatization of religion and the special place occupied in contemporary culture by a search for one’s own identity reveal not only a change in society’s ideas about privacy, but also its axiotic dimension connected with authenticity, creativity and freedom. The meaningful result of this process is connected with replacing religious Transcendence by private individual internal experience, which became unrecognizedand mysterious for the subject itself. It proved to new conceptualization of privacy and ofsolitude as well.

In psychological terms, loneliness is usually understood as a state subjectively perceived by an individual as a deficiency of desired relationships with other people. However, this kind of loneliness must be grounded in the ontic nature of reality. The basic type of loneliness experienced by the human being is metaphysical loneliness. It involves the inability to answer the basic questions of an existential character which an individual asks about nature, fate, other people and God. This kind of loneliness is irremovablebecause it stems from the nature of reality, and, as such, it is an important determinant of human existence.

The article raises an issue of love and loneliness confronted with opinion, that love is the only antidote for loneliness. Its author is submitting this thesis to a precise research. The source wish of love is motivated by aiming at avoiding loneliness. The loneliness seems to be more primary phenomenon to love. This does not necessarily mean that it is not true that love can overcome loneliness. Loneliness can only give way under the pressure of perfect love. It is an attribute of God. A man authentically immersed in that Love has a capacity for overcoming of his loneliness.

The starting point for the considerations are three versions of the text of Henryk Elzenberg, kept in manuscripts, and not published until now, devoted to “meditations” over the possibility of reaching immortality in earthly life. The author, on the basis of their analysis and other statements on immortality, presents Elzenberg’s attitude towards solitude, to which people who do not follow the main social stream and are able to retain autonomy of their views independently of outer conditions are all doomed. To indicate such kind of people Elzenberg has introduced the category of “spirit aristocracy”. This category is indispensable for existing of every society. And both scientists and artists are classified to it. They reach immortality, but it is conditioned, because during their lives nobody will get to know if it is worth to make a sacrifice of their own solitude. According to the author, Elzenberg’s life may be set as an example of such a solitary spirit aristocracy.

The article is an attempt of analysis of the category of loneliness in the mystical experience. The loneliness is a natural space of cognition and a necessary condition of the contemplation enabling the experience of God, but it is also irremovable element of all stages of the mystical experience. Three of the principle problems of this question were subjected to the analysis. Faithful loneliness constituting the essence of the concept of anachorese. From such point of view the isolation from the world (as well as the escape from the body) turns out to be a way to experience of God. Holy loneliness as a durable spiritual state connected with narrow path of the dark contemplation of St. John of the Cross (mystical loneliness in God and for God). Inner loneliness (Eckhart’s seclusion as a basis of the project of inner man).

The author, following Heidegger’s analysis of Dasein way, starts with a description of common understanding of a project of existence. Then he passes on to its ontological understanding. Both common and Heidegger’s way of understanding treat these issues in a different way. Despite significant differences, both ways of understanding the existence project – as a suggested answer to “how to live” question claiming to be the right ones – result from the same paradigm of viewing a human-being, mostly as somebody apart, who is distinguishable by possessing a self-imposed task, which could be “discovered” and put into reality only by an entity alone – and be oneself. Such a human, as a unique in his existence, is his own biggest problem and a task (a project) for all life.

In the article I reconstruct the psychological structure of solitude. The twoforms of solitude – by choice and unwanted – influence the way of experiencing and describing it in culture. I analyze the unwanted solitude, imposed on individuals and communities sources of which are cultural differences, power of stereotypes and superstitions.The violence against ethnic and religious minorities can appear where there is an approval of maintaining cultural solitude. I also consider the relationship between the concept of solitude and Bernhard Waldenfels' alienation category.

In a cultural discourse a solitude is often presented as a state of mind ora social situation. In the both cases, to be lonely means to be alienated, lost or generally unhappy. Is it possible, however, to look at the solitude differently and to notice its potential power of phenomenological insight into the world? In the article the solitude leads the artist to the self reflection and creation. Having based on chosen examples of photography by Zbigniew Tomaszczuk I discuss the idea ofcontemplation of the world that is possible only when the photographer looks through the lens of the camera from a sole distance. I consider three aspects of such gaze like:1. a looking at the landscape, which distances the spectator from the time and space and helps in the composition of the frame, 2. a looking at the own past from the distance ofpassing time, and finally 3. narrating the home city through a visual metaphor

Celem badawczym pracy jest ukazanie samotności jako doświadczenia osobowego człowieka z perspektywy interdyscyplinarnego ujęcia fenomenu samotności. Zjawisko to zostało zestawione z poczuciem osamotnienia i izolacji. Autorka, realizując postawiony cel badawczy, dąży do typizacji i przez to określenia specyfiki doświadczenia samotności, wyciągając wnioski pedagogiczne. Finalnie stwierdza, że samotność rozumiana w sposób pozytywny, jako świadomy wybór (a nie wykluczenie) jest konieczna do prawidłowego rozwoju człowieka, który czas interakcji z ludźmi powinien przeplatać chwilami ciszy i refleksji pojawiającej się podczas spotkań „z samym sobą”.
The research purpose of the thesis is to present loneliness as a human personal experience from the perspective of an interdisciplinary approach to the phenomenon of loneliness. This phenomenon has been juxtaposed with the sense of loneliness and isolation. While pursuing the research purpose the author has set, she aims at typification and – as a result – defining specificity of experiencing loneliness, drawing pedagogical conclusions. Finally, she concludes that solitude understood in a positive way, as a conscious choice (and not an exclusion), is necessary for the proper development of a human being who should alternate the time of interaction with people with moments of silence and reflection occurring during the meetings ‘with oneself’.

The “dark night” – painful feeling being abandoned by God – was experienced by many masters of spiritual life, by saint John of Cross as well as by blessed Mother Teresa, as is shown in her memoirs. Authoress claims that, paradoxically, this apparently declining experience is just a stage that has to be passed in order to achieve fullness of mystic insight and spiritual growth. Doubts, grief, lack of power and will – all this feelings are not the symptoms of spiritual collapse but a steps on a way into holiness. The God is the one who gives the power to overcome typically human weaknesses andcrises (solitude, isolation, adversities).

Today, disturbingly often, it is possible to witnesses the effects of stigma and exclusion not only of the individual, but of whole groups of people, the result of reinforced, persistent stereotypes and prejudices about the subjects mentioned. They cause wrong social attitudes, expressed by the deprivation of the isolated persons of their rights to create and nurture relationships based on closeness and love, and often doom these people to a life of total seclusion. This article is an attempt to show the far-reaching consequences of depriving persons with intellectual disabilities and denying the right of self-expression. It is also a critical reflectionon the irregularities experienced by people, towards whom it is introduced, in terms of institutional isolation. At the same time, by presenting the results of personal research and conclusions, attention is being drawn to the fact that in our society there is an emerging hope for positive changes in the daily treatment of the socially isolated individuals. Yet, there is a constant need for a continuous reinforcement of the public awareness of the fact that the reintegration of these excluded individuals in the community benefits both the parties involvedTaking up the theme of stigma and social exclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities and convicts is considered important and relevant, as this is an issue which remains topical and gives rise to multiple moral dilemmas.

In my article I discuss the concept of the subject from the Lacanian psychoanalysis point of view. My aim is to show that the subject seen from such a perspective is condemned to total loneliness. I refer to three different points: otherness, comprehension and love. In Lacan’s psychoanalysis the difference is referred to as the Real (subject as je). The Real is in opposition to the Symbolic and Imaginary (subject as moi). Therefore, the world, other people and oneself can be understood as absolutely different. Taking such a definition of the otherness, the comprehension is impossible, because it takes place within symbolic sphere, which is false and alien to the subject (je). The otherness and inability of understanding determine treating love as transferred and always directed to imaginary subject. What is important, the theory of the subject as homo symbolicus, even though seemingly in agreement with anti-positivist theory, does not allow to cross lingual and to direct approaching to the otherness. The otherness may be deciphered only within the Imaginary as a disturbance within it, as a temporary lack of sense.

The aim of the article is to analyze the experience of solitude in Memoirs of aMadman (1838), one of the youthful works of Gustave Flaubert, where autobiographical and fictional elements are interspersed. The narrator of Memoirs… is a loner in a threefoldsense: social (it is a result of reluctance and even hatred towards society and a consequence of misanthropy and romantic elitism), metaphysical (a man in Memoirs… seemsto be abandoned, vainly seeking rest in God or in any au-delà) and existential (Memoirs… are written by someone who is empty, burned out, unable to creatively engage in life; he is a stranger to himself). The typology seems to be an obvious affirmation of romantic phenomenon.But Flaubert’s youthful work is not imitative: the experience of loneliness has been subjected to a process of disillusion that ruins the romantic myths
