This article advances a hypothesis which differs from those usually formulated about “The Prince”. Here, Machiavelli is not simply a scholar versed in political philosophy. The theories that he expounds on in this particular piece of work would, in part, be the result of long-term efforts he undertook to gain power for himself and become a sovereign. In order to support this assertion, it is necessary to turn to his biography. His interventions as a high official (particularly during the latter years of the Florentine Republic) have been compared to the reflections he compiled in The Prince . This information points to the fact that Machiavelli followed a meticulous plan in order to carry out a coup d´état, taking shelter behind Soderini – agonfalonier for life – for whom he acted as main counsellor. Some of his contemporaries (and his political enemies in particular) already expressed their suspicions in that regard. The corresponding references have been included in the article.

For Queen Victoria and Prince Albert the proper education of their eldest son, and the future king of England, was of paramount importance. Their most important advisor in this matter was Baron Stockmar, who believed in strict control of every moment in the boy’s life. The article examines available documentary sources dealing with the theory of the prince’s education as presented mainly in Queen Victoria’s, Prince Albert’s and Stockmar’s memoirs, as well as the way this theory was translated into practice by the Prince’s tutors and teachers. The main documentary sources here are the official reports and private diaries of Lady Lyttelton, Henry Birch and Frederick Gibbs. All in all, to the great disappointment of the Prince’s parents, the educational theory promoted by Stockmar proved to be a complete failure.

Motherhood is by many, especially women, one of the greatest experiences in life. The ultimate goal that women, if not all than many, should achieve. Nowadays, we are flooded with help books, websites, guides that lead us through pregnancy and then assist us during the first months of our new born baby. This blessed state seems to be cherished now above all, however, this view was not always the same. Throughout history we can see many women for whom maternity was not meant to be and still they were able to fulfil their life-time goals devoting themselves to other areas of life. For some, maternity was rather a political aspect that would secure the future of the nation. In my article I will focus on the aspect of motherhood through the eyes of Queen Victoria for whom, indeed, maternity was rather an unwelcomed addition to her royal life. I will discuss her own rigid upbringing which can help to understand her later attitude towards her own children. The trend, where there were no proper roles ascribed to parents in terms of their influence on their children, was predominant in the 19th century and based on this we can see how important it was for character creation

Charles-Joseph de Ligne (1735-1814), a Wallon and European Prince, subject of the Austro-Hungary Empire, a heartbreaker of the French Europe, is considered the most famous representative of literary cosmopolitanism. War, love and writing were inseparable in his life. He took part in numerous military campaigns, serving both Austria and Russia, as a Russian colonel, a commander of the order of Maria Theresa, and an Austrian field marshal. He authored various texts related to war; he admired heroism of Charles II, Conde, the tactics of Frederick II, the strategies of Napoleon, Catherine II. The latter was immortalized in de Ligne’s various texts representing different literary genres. The Prince was clearly fascinated by the Empress, and he depicted her in a positive light as an educated person, both agreable and determined. Can we, however, talk about the documentary character of his work ? Instead, the Prince seems to be a documentalist-interpreter.

Artykuł poświęcony jest problematyce form pomocy materialnej dla studentów świadczonej przez państwowe szkoły wyższe. Na tle sytuacji ogólnopolskiej zaprezentowano ewolucję systemu pomocy materialnej dla studentów Politechniki Gdańskiej w latach 1990-2000. Relację oparto na materiałach źródłowych, tj. wydawnictwach Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego, Ministerstwa Edukacji Narodowej oraz sprawozdaniach finansowych z działalności Politechniki Gdańskiej. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na fakt, iż niewystarczający poziom pomocy materialnej dla studentów stanowi dodatkową barierę przy podejmowaniu decyzji o kontynuowaniu kształcenia na poziomie wyższym przez młodzież z miejscowości nie będących siedzibami instytucji akademickich.
The author discusses some of the problems relating to the forms of material support for students practised by public higher educational establishments. Against the backdrop of the current condition in these establishments he discusses the evolution of the system of material assistance for students of Gdańsk Polytechnic in 1990-2000 on the basis of source materials published by the Central Office of Statistics and the Ministry of National Education as well as Gdańsk Polytechnic's financial reports. The author draws attention to the fact that insufficient material support for students is an additional barrier for school-levers living away from academic centres and negotiating whether or not to go to college.

Francis Xavier of Saxony, the son of Augustus III, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, left a very extensive correspondence, which has been preserved until our times in the Departmental Archives in Troyes. The collection constitutes a very important source for the history of everyday life and the history of education of aristocracy in the 18th century. A part of the collection is available in the electronic version on the website of the Archives. Numerous children of the Prince, the sons, as well as daughters, obtained the education suitable for the royal family – comprehensive, competent, pursuing the spirit of the Enlightenment. The period of pursuing knowledge by the children of Francis Xavier was not the time of severing the ties with the parents. The relationships between the father and his sons and daughters were lasting and became more intense in the course of time. Carefully selected tutors and governesses were a very important link between the Prince and his wife and the children. Preceptors not only controlled the educational progress, but also every aspect of daily life, especially of the girls. The Prince expected detailed reports which facilitated control over the adolescent boys and girls, for whom best matches for marriage were being arranged. A complex world of relationships of Francis Xavier’s family completes for us the picture of everyday life of the ruling families, so often confined by the tight restraints of the ceremonial.

The article deals with translator’s dilemmas in the context of picturebooks on the example of the new translations of the French classic “Le Petit Prince” by  Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Given the intermedia character or illustrated books for children, their translation is a very demanding task. It requires ‘visual literacy’, the ability of ‘reading’ and understanding pictures. The way, in which the translators cope with the interplay between the verbal and the visual, so essential for picturebooks, allows to discern their translation strategies. The examined examples point out the discrepancies between domesticating translation and the original illustrations and also the impact of new illustration on the target text. The example of Hans Magnus Enzensberger shows to what extent the original illustrations can be a disruptive factor in adapting translation, so that the only solution is to ignore the intermedia character of the source text. Such manipulation results in the empoverishment of the text. In the case of Peter Sloterdijk his demand for new illustrations can be considered as a consequence of the re-contextualization, that can be observed in his translation.

South Africa is the largest emitter of CO2 and arguably the most developed and urbanised country in Africa. The country currently harbours an ecological deficit territory which could be the outcome of economic expansion, urban explosion, unsustainable resource exploration and a low level of human development. After all, environmental distortions are mainly the outcome of human activities. This study is a maiden attempt to examine the linkage between urbanisation, human capital, natural resources (NR) and the ecological footprint (EF) in South Africa. Unlike previous studies, this study employs positivist and relevant environmental indicators that accommodate built-up land, forest land, carbon footprint, ocean, grazing land and cropland. Findings from the long-run results suggest that urbanisation, economic growth and NR increase the EF, whereas human capital ensures environmental sustainability. The interaction between urbanisation and human capital mitigates environmental degradation by reducing the EF. The canonical cointegrating regression (CCR), dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) and the fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) results further confirm the nature of the relationships and linkages existing with respect to NR, urbanisation, economic growth and the EF. A bidirectional causality exists between human capital, economic growth and the EF. Policies related to NR and urban sustainability, the limitations of the study, as well as possible directions for future research are discussed.

The literature reveals that linear models do not accurately represent the asymmetric relationship between economic growth and energy consumption (EC). To fill this gap, we examined the asymmetric relationship between EC and economic growth in a non-linear panel autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) framework of 85 countries as a whole sample and of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS), the Next Eleven, Big Four in Western Europe, Asia-Pacific region, Group of Seven, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) and the Arab League as a sub-sample analysis from 1977 to 2014. A second generational unit root test has been applied to check the problem of cross-sectional dependency. Asymmetric contegration was employed to analyse the co-integration between the variables of interest. Long-run and short-run estimates have been calculated using the non-linear panel ARDL method. Results indicate that positive shocks to energy use tend to have a growth-enhancing effect in ECO and the Next Eleven while in the rest of the regions, the effect is growth con- traction. Moreover, economic recovery from a positive shock to energy use is the case in the Arab League, Asia-Pacific region, Group of Seven and in the whole sample. However, a negative shock to EC is observed in the Group of Seven, Asia Pacific region, Big Four in Western Europe and ECO, and the whole sample worsens the economic contraction. We can deduct from this study’s results that information on the asymmetric relationship between the subject variables is needed to design sound economic policy decisions across different economic regions.

The paper analyzes the last will of Armand de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, who in his youth abandoned ecclesiastical career and later took active part in the Fronde. Still later, de Bourbon became associated with Jansenists and spent the final years of his life on practicing piety, giving proof of his rigorous morality. The paper thus discusses his last will and professed expiation for the sins of youth, as it attempts to establish whether the testament is a testimony to prince’s Jansenist convictions.

The article refers to the religious and cultural turning point that took place in the Piast state due to the act of accepting Christianity by the prince Mieszko I (who died in 992) in 966. These issues are presented from the view-point of a controversial interpretation regarding the source foundation and literature, number of which has increased over the decades. The baptism of the historically first Polish ruler was preceded by his marriage with the Czech princess Dobrava (who died in 977), which resulted in the alliance with the Přemyslid monarchy and in the growing connections with Germany along with the conflicts with the Veleti. The consequence of the 966 year’s events was the initiating of the Christianization processes in the whole state of the Piasts and its gradual accessing to the circle of Latin culture. In effect, the grounds for the institutional Church were formed, and the Polish aspirations for being a member of Western culture, which have lasted for all the centuries, were established.

The concept of upbringing was truly revolutionised in the 18th century. From the theses of the English scholar John Locke, who encouraged changes to the approach to young people and educating their spirit (mind) so that they would become righteous and just citizens, to the ideas introduced by the Geneva-based philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau, suggesting that a child is a being completely different from an adult, so the concept of education should also be completely different. In Poland, there were some reflections of the aforementioned changes in education and upbringing, as evidenced by Prince Henryk Lubomirski, who at a very young age was placed under the care of his relative, Princess Izabela Lubomirska, née Czartoryska. It was she, influenced primarily by Jean Jacques Rousseau, who decided to raise Prince Henry according to the standards of the time.

The Evangelicals of Bralin had to wait very long for their own place of prayer - until mid 19th century. Initially they could use a schoolroom and later a room in the town hall. It was only in the years 1866-1867 that a church dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, which today, was built in the market square. It was erected as a brick structure, unplastered (Rohbau), in the so-called arcaded style (Rundbogenstil) according to a unique government design created by Berlin architects with the participation of Friedrich August Stiiler. The polychromy of the interior, which has survived till the present day, comes from 1917 and commemorates the jubilee of the church's 50th anniversary as well as the solemnly celebrated 400th anniversary of the Reformation. Pastor Zenon Bessert was the last permanent administrator of the Evangelical parish in Bralin, after 1920 it passed in the care of ministers from Kępno. The church is an exceptional example of well preserved Evangelical buildings that deserves to be placed under the special care of the conservator of historical architecture.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest wewnętrzna działalność ustawodawcza księcia Albrechta von Brandenburg-Ansbach, który objął rządy w księstwie pruskim utworzonym po sekularyzacji pruskiej części Zakonu krzyżackiego jako lenno króla i Korony Polskiej (1525). W czasie swoich rządów książę podejmował działania mające na celu umocnienie swojej pozycji. Służyła temu również działalność prawodawcza, uzgadniana często ze stanami księstwa, w której znaczącą rolę odgrywały ustanawiane przez księcia przepisy porządkowe, wydawane samoistnie, ale często pojawiające się w ramach szerszych ustaw porządkowych obejmujących regulacje karne, prawno-osobowe czy prawno-majątkowe. Ich zadaniem było normowanie wielu stron życia i działalności poddanych, nakazywanie, zakazywanie określonych zachowań, reglamentowanie i represjonowanie ich postępowania. Wydawanie przez władców przepisów policyjnych służyć miało w procesie kształtowania się wczesnonowożytnego władztwa terytorialnego wprowadzeniu kontroli nad poddanymi, wprzęgnięciu ich w system dyscypliny społecznej, mającej na celu osiągnięcie porządku wewnętrznego. Działalność ta, w której przepisy policyjne pełniły funkcję instrumentu utrwalenia władzy, miała w przypadku księcia Albrechta dodatkowe znaczenie ze względu na ustanowienie w księstwie pruskim ewangelickiego kościoła krajowego, na którego czele, jako jego głowa, stał sam książę. Zespolenie władzy świeckiej z kościelną, zgodne z doktryną Marcina Lutra, zmierzało do powstanie społeczności, w której poddani książęcy byli jednocześnie członkami książęcego kościoła. Z tego powodu wiele z przepisów policyjnych miało szczególny moralny charakter.
The present article deals with the internal legislative activity of Prince Albrecht von Brandenburg-Ansbach, who took charge of the Duchy of Prussia which had been formed after the secularization of the Prussian part of the Teutonic Order and when it became a fiefdom of the Polish King and of the Polish Crown (1525). During his reign, the prince undertook actions with the aim of strengthening his position. This was also served by the legislative activity, which was often agreed with the social estates of the principality in which the ordinances, which were issued on their own and established by the prince, played a significant role. Moreover, they often appeared within the scope of broader ordinance laws which covered criminal, legal and personal regulations as well as legal and property regulations. Their task was to regulate many aspects of the subjects’ lives and activities besides ordering and prohibiting certain behaviors as well as rationing and repressing their actions. The issuing of police provisions by rulers was supposed to facilitate the process of shaping the early modern territorial power by introducing control over subjects, putting them into a system of social discipline with the aim of achieving internal order. In the case of Prince Albrecht, this activity, in which the police provisions served as an instrument of consolidating power, was of additional significance due to the establishment of the national Evangelical church in the Duchy of Prussia with the prince himself as its head. The fusion of the secular and ecclesiastical power, in accordance with the doctrine of Martin Luther, aimed at creating a community in which the prince’s subjects were simultaneously members of the prince’s church. For this reason, many of the police provisions had a special moral character.
