Opis:
The ethics of Emmanuel Lévinas – the idea of asymmetrical, unconditional responsibility for and devotion to the Other – is founded on the dichotomy between the Same (I) and the Other. The objective of the article is to demonstrate that, in spite of this dichotomous foundation, Lévinas’s argument paradoxically eludes the binary logic of the Western logos. Employing the ‘close reading’ method with Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essence, the author shows how Lévinas’s way of thinking and the main concepts of his argument situate themselves beyond binary oppositions – in the realm of the excluded middle or, otherwise, in the realm of the Third, construed as transgression of dichotomies. The main argument is preceded by a discussion of the antinomies introduced into the I-Other relation by the appearance of the Third construed as the Third Party (le tiers).

SummaryIn this contribution I try to show how E. Stein, E. Levinas and P. The three main images are commented:the death as a discontinuity and condition of a new life, suspension of the time to the resurrection by the other, the intensification of the experience of time.

Opis:
Our daily existence is affected by how we perceive death, be it our own’s death tocome or others’ death. The intimidating nature of death has the potential to affect our daily ethical existence in relation to the other, as is seen in various crises in human history. In such a context, since expansive literature in various approaches such as biological, sociological, psychological, and political addressing the question of death is already available, this essay presents an ethico-philosophical perspective on death and argues if death should be seen as the worst event that is to be experienced by being. In this essay, I correlate language, time, and death, contrasting popular analogies, i.e., death is possibility of impossibility (Hegel and Heidegger), and death is impossibility of possibility (Lévinas and Blanchot). Firstly, the essay stages the discussion with contrasting synchronic and diachronic perspectives of language, i.e., historical understanding of language and time in Hegelian terms and the messianic time in Lévinasian terms, to see how sensibility, i.e., universal meaning, is expressed through concept. Secondly, the essay sees how sensibility is expressed through a concept beyond dialectic opposition and negativity while acknowledging that the question of ethics arises only after the end of philosophy, for something is always inexpressible through expression; there is always remnant beyond philosophical significance. This essay not only argues language, time, and death as the ethical responsibility of the self towards the other, but also contributes to the understanding of language as ethics beyond philosophy, and death as passivity beyond ontology following Lévinas’s idea of messianic time and Blanchot’s views on literature and death.

This paper sets out to outline the singular nature of the dimension of anthropology of freedom in the philosophies of Jean-Paul Sartre and Emmanuel Lévinas, the leading existentialists of the 20th century. It seems that the phenomenon of human freedom, one of the fundamental issues in philosophical anthropology, in particular in the humanist reflection, proves to be problematic when one seeks to elucidate it without ambiguity. This becomes even more difficult given that it prompts further momentous intellectual quandaries, mostly those concerned with the nature of the meaning of existence itself. The concepts advanced by Sartre and Lévinas – although they represent different visions of the human – undoubtedly provide much philosophical inspirationfor all kinds of reflection on the vital issue of freedom.

The article reconstructs a certain element of the evolution in Józef Tischner’s thinking. Initially representing orthodox phenomenology, Tischner situated his philosophy in exiological paradigm seeing in values the most fundamental reality and the main object of philosophical research. Later, thanks to agathological dimensions he put aside the language of values and sometimes doubted adequacy of values as philosophical category. Tischner revealed courage when he was able to radically revise his former views according to the principle: amicus Plato, magis tamen amica veritas.

The article is an attempt to link the philosophy of Levinas with the bioethical issues of the beginning of human life. The author refers to those statements of Levinas in which he describes who a person is, what is human body, being male/female, fatherhood. The ethical-anthropological character of Levinas’ thought makes it a profound source for contemporary discussions on moral themes, bioethical problems included. However, certain difficulties arise on account of the philosopher’s highly individual language. The aim of the article is to confront the language o f Levinas with the traditional language of Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy and colloquial language. The text is a proposition how to build bioethics not only on Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy or utilitarian or pragmatic philosophy but also on the philosophy of Levinas, as it sheds additional light on the problem of man, existence, life and interpersonal relations.

Opis:
This article deals with the issues of creativity of people with disabilities and their social values. The starting point is the category of Another as saturated with pejorative meanings – in a social but positive context in the study of creativity. The combination of these contradictory approaches is reflected in the art brut, represented by artists with mental incompetence. Their creativity dictated by internal compulsion is presented as the work of marginalized people. The social context, as well as the type of disability that determines the way in which this art is treated: from the rejection of, for example, the early time of Nikifor's works, to the complete recognition of, for example, F. Kahlo's painting. The basic question, however, comes down to the question of the value of this art for man. Referring to the philosophy of E. Levinas, the author seeks to show that despite the assumption of the unknowability of another human being, the greatest value of the Other art is the ability to experience, to see though a fragment of the world of artists determined by the disability.

The main purpose of the article is to supplement the philospohy of Emmanuel Levinas with the conception of fear. The analysis of certain expressions used in the works of Levinas leads the author to the conclusion that the ethical relation to the face of the Other causes irreversable changes in the self. Jaranowski considers two types of reaction to nakedness (Levinas describes the face of the Other as “naked”) and puts emphasis on the negative one – nakedness is something that should not be exposed, it causes anxiety. The question of nakedness casts light on the problem of the call from the Other as a kind of interruption. For one can not predict all the consequences of responding to the call from the face of the Other. Finally author claims that there is a kind of fear that has its subject in moral obligation as such.

Opis:
The author tries to answer the question whether thinking is possible as a type of knowledge about human behaviour. To this end, he compares two thinkers, who, while differing considerably from one another, are similar in that they reject the traditional philosophy of existence, and use language with multiple meanings. Heidegger considered ethics as something of fundamental importance, but differing from ethics as knowledge, or as normative science. Levinas, on the other hand, believed ethics was the first philosophy, but did not treat it as normative. He argued that ethics was not cultivation of good, nor even a system of values, but a relationship with others. Heidegger criticized traditional ethics and morality, treating them as immature, juvenile even. Nevertheless, there is something in his writings that suggests what he had in mind was the necessity of existence. The ethics criticized by Heidegger or by modern French anti-humanists as well as Levinas reemerges in the form of humanities, as a discipline which puts man in the centre of the universe and defines actions that are appropriate for him. Shouldn’t we, however, following the train of Kant’s thought on the role of judgment, affirm the ontological difference Heidegger talked about? Since Kant accepted valuation of beauty, one can hazard a guess there exists a certain minimum of substantiation; if not of moral truth, then at least of substantiation at the level of meaning. Subjectivity must be shown as the power to create meaning, and thus to take moral action. Ethics after Heidegger still seems to be possible.

Opis:
Solitude is, to some measure, in the centre of Emmanuel Levinas’s philosophy. Indeed, in each of the three periods of his philosophical path, solitude adopts a different shape. In the first period, Levinas shows us hypostasis as the solitude of the monad, tragically enclosed within itself. In the second period he sketches before our eyes the image of solitude as a transcendental condition of the occurrence of encounter with the Other. Whereas in the third period, he asserts the solitude of the subject who is infinitely responsible for Others. Admittedly, the term “solitude” (la solitude) appears only in the first period of his philosophical quest. In the second period, he designates solitude by the terms “separation” (la séparation), while in the third period he calls it “selfness” (le Soi). Although Levinas uses those three distinct terms, which might suggest completely different realities, they converge precisely in what constitutes the substantial richness of the experience of solitude.

The text is an analysis of the composition of archival footage in contemporary documentary film. It presents artistic strategies concerning visual narration used in the film. From this perspective, it also describes the cinematic image of the provincial world of Jewish culture in Poland before II World War as captured by Jewish amateur cinematographers in their home movies, and how the same place is filmed nowadays. The mutual relationship between two visual layers is also interesting: archival footage and contemporary film and the meanings that arise as a result. Among the elements of visual film language are representations showing the metamorphosis of the place of action that occurred as a result of the passage of time and historical dramatic events. Also analyzed is the function of film close up in describing a wider context and portraits of witnesses who remember the world before the destruction of the Shoah.
