The article examines religious topics in dedicatory letters for the Polish Protestant Bibles of the 16th and 17th century. The New Testament published by Jan Seklucjan (1551–1553), the Brest Bible (1563) and the Gdansk Bible (1632) were dedicated to the reigning kings towards whom the Protestants expressed their expectations about the place of the Church / religion in the state and the role of the ruler. The dedicatory letters by Seklucjan, Mikolaj Radziwill and Krzysztof Radziwill highlighted the concept of the primacy of secular authority over the Church, namely, the sovereignty of the monarch, personifying the majesty and law of the Republic over the Church of God, i.e. people who constitute the community of faith. According to the Polish political status, king, due to his office, played the role of the “servant of the Republic”, and as the guardian of the legal order, was not to be the ruler of conscience, but the guardian of freedom of speech and religion.

Analyzing the phenomenon of one of the most popular European myths - the Arthurian myth - the author attempts to answer the question of the difference between using and abusing myths. An insight into the sources of Arthurian tradition proves that even the oldest and most important literary incarnations of the myth were used by their authors as a means of speaking about contemporary political and sociological issues. However, the Arthurian films (which are the main subject of this research) reinforce the thesis about a distinctive feature of a myth itself to be immensely flexible and able to absorb various cultural content. The study examines in detail the film King Arthur (2004, dir. Antoine Fuqua). Its creators seem to come very close to the border between use and abuse of a myth by denying the mythical aspect of the Arthurian legends

Sophocles’ second Oedipus-play clearly relates to the first; it holds, however, a particular place in literary history, for it was the last play to be included into the canon of classical Attic tragedy. Moreover, the play shows another peculiarity: though the idea that death can be preferable to life is familiar to all Sophoclean protagonists, Oedipus was the only one allowed to get old, a process depicted quite realistically by old Sophocles. Oedipus’ self-explanation, however, that he suffered himself more than he really acted, resembles much a Catch-22 situation: if that were the case in those days, as Oedipus says that it was, he then was crazy and didn’t have to do what he did; but if he didn’t want to do what he did then, he was sane and had to do it, because the gods wanted him to do it. The proposed new reading of the play shows how time and age work on Oedipus’ frame of mind: a desire for whitewashing is acted out in a blame-game, awareness of what is to come is coupled with rather a hesitant manner as though he is slightly unsure of himself (what he is not), and eventually, being out of touch with time and fearing to be left alone make Oedipus curse, for he had been treated unjustly: Oedipus comes close to Shakespeare’s King Lear, though he does not go mad, he only becomes bad and dangerous to know.

Opis:
Belgium is a founding member of the European Union (EU). It is a trilingual federation, consisting of four different entities constituted on the basis of language. The linguistic groups within the Belgian population have had a long history of conflict. For many years, tensions between the French and Dutch speaking areas have been ameliorated through the principle of “territoriality.” The application of this principle resulted in the division of the country into three areas: the Flemish Region (the Dutchspeaking region in the north), the Walloon Region (the French speaking region in the south) and the Brussels-Capital Region (officially bilingual but predominantly francophone). In each of those areas, only one language has official status, and the speakers of other national languages residing there have no linguistic rights. The principle of territoriality has resolved some tensions between the linguistic groups by guaranteeing linguistic rights within geographic boundaries, yet it has not fully resolved them. The Belgian experience in dealing with a multicultural and multi-linguistic polity will clearly provide valuable insights for other national groups wrestling with the ever-increasing heterogeneity among their linguistic populations. More important in the short term, however, is the ongoing struggle for dominance between French and Dutch speakers within Belgium. The specificity of the Belgian federal system is also reflected in the executive power.
Artykuł koncentruje się na władzy wykonawczej w Belgii na poziomie federalnym. Omówione są tu organy egzekutywy, ich miejsce w rozwiązaniach ustrojowych oraz faktyczna rola w sprawowaniu władzy. Wyjaśniony został proces formowania rządu i trudności w sformowaniu gabinetu koalicyjnego. Wskazano także źródła konstytucjonalizmu belgijskiego i konstytucyjne podstawy ustroju Belgii.

Zofia Nałkowska’s writing project.
Opis:
The author interprets two novels by Zofia Nałkowska — Węzły życia [The Bonds of Life] and Niecierpliwi [The Impatient]. In a hermeneutic-feminist analysis of selected figures and motifs, the article presents new meanings of concepts that are crucial for the understanding of anthropology of corporeality in Nałkowska’s writing project. Among the focal points of the discussion there are the dignity of “lay bodies,” as well as “male” and “female” fantasies of violence.

The present paper depicts alterations undergone by the sleeping king motif (sebastianism) in the writings of Fernando Pessoa. The data to conduct the study were collected in thematic anthologies and several unpublished pieces. The myth of the King Sebastian was given a congregational dimension by Pessoa, thus conveying his cultural and identity project subsumed under the metaphor of the spiritual empire. Pessoa introduces some readjustments in the way the historical king is to be conceived of. In his theory, Sebastian becomes the figure of the individual effort on the way towards the national renewal. The messianic character of D. Sebastião is defeated in this theory despite having been associated with the figures of either Jesus or the Antichrist. The messiah of the Portuguese foundation myth is replaced with the idea of great man and the task to be carried out in this field, included the metaphor of the Fifth Empire, gains a cultural character. That is why Pessoa’s theories must no longer be interpreted in messianic terms. The Pessoa’s transformations of the sebastianism analyzed in this article are the starting point for the new national narration in the poetic cycle of "Mensagem".

This contribution focuses on phrasemes with an intensification function. The emphasis is laid on phrasemes with the so-called base word čert ‘devil’, král ‘king’, and drak ‘dragon’. We will attempt to show that the bearer of an intensification function is in some phrasemes the base word itself and in other cases the whole proposition. On several illustrative examples we will prove different formal types of phraseological units which perform an intensification function with the given base words. Furthermore, we will attempt to show that an identical or similar form of phraseological units differing only in the base word (although from one thematic unit) need not have an identical or similar semantic-functional structure.

The aim of the article is to discuss the Sarmatian cultural transfer into the social space of Lor-raine as a manifestation of the Polish cultural identity of the king of Poland, duke of Lorraine and Bar, Stanislaus Leszczynski, a European and a citizen of the world. Leszczynski’s prolific contributions in his new homeland had its roots in the Sarmatian culture, one in which he grew up and which became ingrained in his consciousness. Through the Polish monarch and his Polish entourage, elements of Polish cultural identity—profoundly anchored in the Sarmatian background—began to permeate into the social space of the new homeland of Lorraine.

The article explores an expedition of Henry II, king of Germany, to the domain of Bolesław the Brave in 1005. While the issue has raised considerable interest in academic literature, the analyses have been carried out mainly in the context of major events i.e. the wars of 1002-1005, 1007-1013 and 1015-1018. In this work, an attempt has been made to narrow down the perspective to Henry II’s expedition of 1005 which reached as far as Poznań. To this end, I have analysed the written sources (specifically the records of Thietmar of Merseburg, a German chronicler) in an effort to indicate not only the expedition’s itinerary but also its rate and the state of preparation of the two major parties of the conflict, the German Reich and the Piast dominion. In addition, I have decided to make use of my experience of historical re-enactment in a pioneering way, in order to find out if the rate of the marching maintained by contemporary re-enactors of historical events provides a good comparison background for the rate of Henry II’s expedition of 1005. Next, archaeological sources provided some supplementary information on the conflict of 1005. In the light of all these data I have managed to adopt a different and unique approach to the analysed issue.

What is the relationship between the quantitative literary history of the past twenty years and the older hermeneutic tradition? Answers have typically been of two kinds: for many in the interpretive camp, the two approaches are incompatible, and the newer one has little or no critical value; for most quantitative researchers, they are instead perfectly compatible, and in fact complementary. Here, I will propose a thirdpossibility, that will emerge step by step from a comparison of how the two strategies work. How they work, literally; in the conviction that practices – what we learn to do by doing, by professional habit, and often without being fully aware of what we are doing – have frequently larger theoretical implications than theoretical statements themselves. In other words: understanding what a research paradigm does, ratherthan what it declares it wants to do. This is the plan.
Jaka jest relacja między ilościową historią literatury ostatnich dwudziestu lat a starszą tradycją hermeneutyczną? Odpowiedzi na to pytanie wydają się dwojakie: dla wielu przedstawicieli obozu interpretacyjnego, nie da się pogodzić tych dwóch podejść, a nowsze podejście ma bardzo małą wartość krytyczną jeśli w ogóle można mówić o wartości w tym wypadku. Z kolei dla większości badaczy ilościowychsą one całkowicie zgodne i w zasadzie wzajemnie się uzupełniają. W niniejszym tekście przedstawię trzecią możliwość, która krok po kroku wyprowadzona zostanie z porównania sposobu funkcjonowania obydwu strategii. Mam tu na myśli dosłownie sposób funkcjonowania; oparty na przekonaniu, że praktyki – czyli to,czego uczymy się poprzez wykonywanie, z zawodowego przyzwyczajenia i często bez pełnej świadomości tego, co robimy – często mają większe implikacje teoretyczne niż same stwierdzenia teoretyczne. Innymi słowy: ważniejsze jest zrozumienie tego, jak funkcjonuje paradygmat badawczy, niż określenie tego, jak powinien on funkcjonować. Taki jest plan niniejszego artykułu.

The paper offers an insight into the diplomatic activities of princess Anna Luiza Radziwiłłowa nee Mycielska, second wife and widow of the great general of Lithuania, Michał Kazimierz “Rybeńko” Radziwiłł, in the aftermath of the election of Stanisław August to the Polish throne. The main sources comprise diplomatic correspondence between France and Gdańsk, where the princess lived during the exile of her stepson, following his opposition to the new king. The paper aims at showing how Anna Luiza tried to gain political support from France as well as how her efforts were perceived by the French diplomacy.

The article focuses on the participation of the Hungarian King Andrew II in the Fifth Crusade in 1217. The author rejects the speculations (B. Hóman, S. Runciman, F. Van Tricht et al.) that the reason of the king’s decision was ascending the throne of the Latin Empire after the death of the emperor Henry in 1216. Due to the lack of evidence in sources for these speculations, the author claims that the reasons for which Andrew II took part in the Fifth Crusade were rather prestigious, devotional and ambition oriented.
