Opis:
In the story  The Castle of Death(1912) Jakub Deml presents an esoteric text, which allows initiation, that is to say the revival and improvement of human spirit, because it points the way to the absolute hidden behind the words. The highest form of initiation is transcendence, which consists in the unity of life and death. To achieve this, the candidate of initiation must die in this world. Deml shows the horror of death by the conventions of a horror story. In The Castle of Death, writing and reading the esoteric text means the confrontation between the life-giving language and the ineffable silence  of death. This confrontation leads to the acceptance of silence, because in the world of absolute language as the medium of the spirit loses its  raison d’être. To emphasize the uniqueness of esoteric text, Deml uses the form of a found manuscript. He presents the moment of transition between temporality and transcendence as a dream that goes back to a source of human life.

Opis:
The article presents an analysis of puberty, one of the key aspects of Jakub Żulczyk’s debut novel Zrób mi jakąś krzywdę… (2006). At the same time, he presents potential analogies with the interwar volume of Witold Gombrowicz’s Pamiętnik z okresu dojrzewania (1933), whose characters try in various ways to “grow up” to the surrounding Forms. In Żulczyk’s writings, there is something immature in almost every created character, regardless of the age or experience. The best example of this is a pair of main characters: the twenty-five-year-old David and his kidnapped teenager, a brilliant, alienated girl, locked in the world of video games. During the initiation journey, under the influence of various factors, each of them undergoes a metamorphosis, maturing, slowly crossing the boundaries of childhood. Żulczyk collides various contemporary types of immaturity, at the same time provoking the question about the condition of adulthood in today’s world.

The article presents an analysis of selected functions carried out by the popular cultural references in Żulczyk’s novel Zrób mi jakąś krzywdę, czyli wszystkie gry wideo są o miłości. The first section of the article considers some methodological problems related to the subject matter of the article and discusses the book in view of Shusterman’s aesthetic experience model in the aesthetic legitimization of popular art. The next section includes the analysis of the text and focuses on such issues as references to popular culture in the protagonist’s characteristics. In the conclusion of the article, the author sums up that the popular culture threads are not included in the novel purely for decorative reasons but constitute it at a multi-tiered level and cannot be removed from the novel otherwise it would disrupt, or even destroy, its structure and thus, without some knowledge of the basic elements of pop culture, the reading and understanding of the book can be substantially impaired and incomplete.

Hieronima (psalterium abbreviatum) z modlitewnika Zygmunta I.
Following the brief presentation of the author Jakub of Kowalewice and his codex currently held in the collections of Poznań University Library, the present state of the research on the text included in the codex, the so-called St. Jerome psalter is discussed. An attempt is made to resolve the issues on its authorship, intended use and the source of origin of the text in the codex. Its content is discussed and then compared with another well-known version of the St. Jerome psalter (psalterium abbreviatum) in the King Sigismond’s I prayer book.

Although Auroracontains numerous references to the Bible, the very title of Böhme’s most famous work is the result of an experience with a tin vessel. Luther would blame Böhme of illumination, that is, the possibili- ty of an internal, omitting the biblical Word, communicating the Spirit of God with human. Böhme was a theosophist, means either theologian and philosopher, in one person. As a theologian, he drew the knowledge from God’s revelation, and as a philosopher he perceived the traces of God in the world. He had a premonition that reason and faith can not contradict themselves, because ultimately they have a common source in God.

The  code  compiled  by  canon  Jakub  of  Kowalewice  ca.  1478  is  a  typical  example    of a collective code (codex collecticius). It contains texts by various authors, diversified in terms of content and form, ranging from predominantly theological, moral-ascetic and devotional texts, through geographical texts, medical instructions and prescriptions, to miscellaneous minor secular poetry.Jakub wrote in the first place for his own needs. When occasionally addressing a potential reader, he most certainly had the clergy in mind. The selection of writings copied by Jakub allows us to see him as an advocate of the idea of Church reform, especially in the area of a renewal of the moral life of the clergy, an idea which was popular in the 15th century.

The present article provides a content analysis of the mappa mundi (world map) in the code compiled by Jakub of Kowalewice (BUP MS. 1746) and attempts to establish the provenance of the text that had been contained in the codex, its authorship, and the approximate date of its origin. Furthermore, the article analyses the list of provinces that had been labelled and inscribed into the diagrammatic world maps (mappae mundi) based on the T-O diagram, which depicted the three known continents as a T contained in a circle, and those included outside the map form in a group of codices that include parallel texts to that of the Poznan codex (that originally came from the ninth century work by Nennius – Historia Brittonum). Finally, the results of the query for the maps using the T-O type in Polish collections that could have provided the model (pattern) for the map included in the codex by Jakub of Kowalewice are presented. An attempt is also made to perform a content analysis of the list of provinces inscribed into the map and to indicate the differences and common features between the maps found in the query and the copy in MS 1746.

This article is a preliminary reconnaissance of Jakub Wujek’s presentation in his Lesser Postylla sermons of the Catholic Church and the truths of faith he preached. This reconnaissance confirms that the circumstances of the creation of Wujek’s Lesser Postylla, its genesis, strongly influenced the content of the work. For the universal, Catholic Church was almost always presented by the Jesuit preacher in confrontation with the image of the criticised dissenters. Notably, the picture of the true Church as presented by Wujek in his sermons is fully in line with the doctrine of this religion. Undoubtedly, the picture of the Church painted almost five centuries ago is still valid, as confirmed by confronting Wujek’s remarks with the contemporary version of the official interpretation of the Catholic Church’s doctrine of faith and morals, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, compiled in the second half of the 20th century after the Second Vatican Council.

Opis:
The essay discusses Jakub Sobieski’s diaries and memories, which belong to the finest specimens of such writing in Polish Baroque. The diary and memoirs of the Moscow campaign of 1617-1618 have survived in only a few copies, with the most important ones in Biblioteka Czartoryskich in Cracow. Reconstruction of Prince Władysław’s struggle for the Russian crown is mostly based on a handwritten testimony called Diariusz ekspedycyjej moskiewskiej dwuletniej królewica Władysława A. D. 1617 [The Diary of the Two-Year Moscow Campaign by Royal Prince Władysław in 1617]. The events described in the diary span from April 5th, 1617 to December 28th, 1618. The author has arranged the material chronologically, focusing on the text as historical evidence. The conclusion of the text, where Sobieski quotes a fragment of Tacitus’s Annals, points out to the argumentative function of the work, which was supposed to explain to Poles (the king, the sejm and senate, the nobility) that commissaries were right in signing the Truce of Deulino, regarding the safety of the homeland threatened by Turks and Tatars, and the budgetary difficulties of the Crown and Lithuania. The second work by Sobieski is more of a Baroque memoir, composed as a temporal sequence (some fragments have the structure of diary). The author reconstructs the events of the Moscow campaign, beginning with the death of tsar Ivan the Terrible (1584), and leads the narrative to the end of 1618, when the Truce of Deulino. The work is characterized by greater coherence in presentation of facts, their selection, and a more general point of view, pointing out to the failure of Polish dynastic policy. Sobieski seems to be critical of the Polish intervention and the Polish raison d’état in this respect. He is also critical of the young prince’s campaign of 1617-1618; he was a commissioner for treaties with Moscow during the campaign.

The article aims to show the issue of educational travels of noble youth in the modern era. The source is the correspondence of Jakub Dunin from his journeys around Europe in 1699–1703, addressed to father Franciszek Świętosław. The mentioned letters (stored in the National Archives in Krakow in the Tomkowicz Archive from Kobiernice) provide important information referring to the reasons for travelling, travel expenses and the companions. Particularly noteworthy are colorful descriptions of the social life lived in European manors. For example, the author visited Versailles of Louis XIV and provided a detailed description of various ceremonies and court entertainment. Foreign journeys posed an opportunity to learn about foreign cultures, political systems or armies. This encouraged nobility sons’ reflections which they shared with relatives back in Poland. As a result, the travel correspondence abounds in individual interpretations, for example, of the then political developments on the international arena. When confronted with facts, they add extra value to the publication.

Opis:
The analysis presented in the paper consists in juxtaposition of the listing of the entries from the New Testament of Brześć Bible (1563) and the New Testament of the Bible of Jakub Wujek (1599), two sixteen-century translations of the Bible, distinguished by their great social influence, with the index of the entries of hitherto published volumes of the Dictionary of the Polish Language of the 16th Century, the wordbook which presents the condition of the vocabulary of the sixteen-century Polish. The two biblical translations provided 14 lexemes unrecorded as entries in the Dictionary. Firstly, there are morphological variants among them of the entries of the Dictionary – 4 lexemes, (e.g., huf); secondly, derivatives from the entries of the Dictionary – 3 lexemes (e.g., potaić się); thirdly, the lexemes being grammatical forms stemming from the entries in the Dictionary – 5 lexemes (e.g., gardzony), the meaning of some of them departs from the meaning of their basic grammatical form; fourthly, the lexemes which are not morphological variants of the entries of the Dictionary – 2 lexemes of foreign origin (e.g., afryk). All of the mentioned lexemes are marginal with respect to typical lexical resources of the sixteenth-century Polish. Some of them, however, (e.g., pomorze), became popular in the seventeenth-century Polish, which attests to the transformations of the Polish lexis in that century.

Opis:
The purpose of the analysis is to try to provide an answer to the question whether it is possible to determine the degree of filiational dependence of the New Testament of the Bible translated by Jakub Wujek from 1599 (abbreviation: W) from the New Testament of the Brześć Bible from 1563 (abbreviation: B) with regard to lexis. The study is accompanied by the assumption that the translation of the Brześć Bible may have partially inspired Jakub Wujek in his translation work. The data which enabled scholars to establish the scope of a possible filiational relation between the New Testament of the Bible by Wujek and the New Testament of the Brześć Bible with reference to lexis have been obtained owing to a quantitative-distributional analysis of both texts. Moreover, a comparative context has been considered, that is that between the New Testament of Gdańsk (1606) and the New Testament of the Gdańsk Bible (1632) as texts remaining in closer filiational relation with B, forming a Calvinist-Lutheran translational continuum with this translation. During the study, the number of identical lexical substitutions in place of parallel lexemes common for B and W were treated as an exponent of the degree of hypothetical lexical dependence of W from B. In the subsequent translations of the comparative context under consideration (W and B) they were replaced by alternative equivalents. The result of the analysis with the criteria thus defined is the contention that lexical dependence of W from B is hardly noticeable, which can be proved by the following numerical data: W contains 65 lexemes in total which evidence the studied dependence (they belong to the vocabulary with a frequency f = 1, exceptionally f = 2 or f = 3). They constitute barely 1.2% of the entire lexicon of W, and their total number of occurrences in the text amounts to 74, which is only 0.06% of the entire text of W.
