Opis:
The article analyzes Tove Jansson’s Moomin novels in terms of the representations of pipe smoking. The analysis focuses on three characters from the novels: Moominpappa, Snufkin, and the Joxter. The theoretic framework of the analysis is called “the semiotics of tobacco”. In this context, tobacco is regarded as a sign of the cultural sign-system, and thus what is exactly analyzed are the cultural meanings of tobacco in the Moomin novels.

Poznań 2010, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 217-233. ISBN 978-83- 232-2210-1. ISSN 1644-6763. Polemicising with Maria A. Potocka’s view, the author reflects on the problem of mask and facial expression in the life and work of S.I. Witkiewicz. They appear here as an expression of philosophy of man, a specific feature of the personality of the author of Szewcy [The Shoemakers] whose whole life, artistic and philosophical activity was marked by “facial expression”. The article also reminds the unusually important texts of Stefan Szuman, Witkacy’s friend, who points to the essence of Witkacy’s portraits. The last question discussed in this article is the problem of ascribing to Witkacy of the authorship of most of the photographs in which he is presented (since they are a documentation of his artistic creations) while actually the authors of these photographs are a dozen or so photographer friends of Witkacy.

Opis:
This paper examines the status of European English (EE) in current linguistictheory, in particular the hotly debated issue of whether or not it is possible to treat EE as an endonormative linguistic variety in its own right. Alternatively, EE may remain a form of English as a foreign language (EFL), and the decision has far-reaching socio-political consequences. Some relevant data from Polish English is discussed in this context. It is argued that there is no reason to reanalyse the observed deviations from English native standards as simplifications or innovations characteristic of a new language. The debate is shown to relate to the opposition between utilitarian and epistemic goals in foreign language teaching methodology, as exemplified by the dichotomy between competence and performance or between training for interaction and training of the faculties of the mind.

Opis:
This article consists of four parts. In the first part, attention is drawn to an approach towards the problems of a knowledge-based economy (KBE) and economic or social progress, and in the second part three definitions are presented: one based on an enterprise, one based on a macroeconomic aspect, and one based on a social approach, with a discussion of the controversies and disputes that bind these concepts. The first area of the dispute is contained within a microeconomic aspect and involves the question of cooperation in the creation and dissemination of knowledge vis-a-vis competition and the values created by the market, to which knowledge is also subject. The second area of controversies involves an answer to the question: Is a KBE an extension of industrial civilisation, or does it represent the beginning of a new post-industrial civilisation? In this context, the article presents six qualities that characterise a KBS, after which it considers whether Poland is ripe for this type of economy and examines the country’s situation in the light of the characteristics of a KBE and the progress attained by EU countries along the road to such an economy. In the final part of the article, a summary of the Author’s thinking is given, providing two possible answers depending on the points of reference he discussed previously.

Informed by the findings in the economic voting literature and using an original dataset on Polish elections this research breaks away from this established practice and goes a step further by showing how economic conditions allow voters to distinguish between high/low performers and effectively attribute responsibility under open-list PR systems where voters can choose not only among parties but also among individual candidates. By integrating open-list design into the model of accountability this study transforms the way we think about the very act of voting.

Jednoprzestrzenne kościoły romańskie z terenu Wielkopolski
‘Rural’ ecclesiae laicorum have remained mute witnesses of our history; they have been deserted, forgotten and frequently falling into ruin. Single-nave Romanesque churches from the territories of Poland have not been much interest for the scholars of the Middle Ages. A full monograph on such churches from Greater Poland has not been written yet. This remains in a striking opposition to analogues buildings from Western Pomerania, Silesia or the New March. The only incomplete and to a large extent outdated work on this subject is Stanisław Wiliński’s paper Granite village churches of 12th century in Greater Poland or an exiguous paper by Alicja Karłowska- Kamzowa addressing the question of their foundation. The main aim of my book is the presentation of single-nave churches from Greater Poland erected in the period between the second half of the eleventh century and the end of the thirteenth century, in their historical and settlement context. Only churches that have been subject to archeological excavations have been included. Therefore, two factors determined whether a church has been chosen and included in this study: firstly, some archeological excavations must have been carried out within it, and secondly, the church must have played a basic role as a Christianization centre for ‘rural’ areas.

The purpose of this article is to provide a theoretical framework for the contemporary process of political communication. It emphasizes the changing roles of the senders/receivers within the process and it postulates unprecedented opportunities offered by the emergence of the New Media. As for the empirical research, we discuss the results of the study that has been conducted to further the understanding of how the younger generation, aged 20-25 (herein referred to as Digital Natives), process and comprehend the news media content, with special attention to political messages. It was initially hypothesized that the main source of information about politics and the surrounding world is the Internet and the social media in particular. The paper discusses the results of the study showing that the alternative news websites and social media, understood as the opposite to what is known as the mainstream media, have been gaining ground. Concurrently, the study discovered the students’ declining interest in traditional institutional mainstream-controlled media (i.e. press, radio or television).

The goal of my paper is to consider how one chooses one’s own action. First, I will try to understand how both his past and his environment can condition someone's action. According to Sartre, we can act without being determined by our past which is always separated from us. It will be important to understand how such a process is possible. Is man completely free to act? Then I will raise the question of our reasons for acting in order to show that reasons do not pre-exist in the world. Motives are always motives for an agent who gives them meaning. They never condition the action completely. By his project, the agent reveals some reasons to act and these reasons have a value only in relation to the project adopted by the agent. Therefore, we can say that everyone is condemned to be free.

The title “I have called you by your number” is paraphrased from the book of Isaiah. In Torah the change of name of the main character suggests the turning point of his/her fate. In the article I concentrate on the gesture of assuming pseudonym-anagrams by a few poets – it is viable to read it as an attempt at self-determination, and as a painful dividing line, and as a form of a mask, and an analogue of a perturbed fate. My reflection concentrates on texts by Sachs, Domin, Celan, Amichai, Améry with a motif of numbers (the turned over analogues of the names) – I find a context in the poem by Wisława Szymborska Still; and in the performance by Raimund Hoghe, staged only once, just in Poland, entitled site specific; the project 80064 by Artur Żmijewski or works by Roman Opałka. The promise written in the Book of Isaiah of liberating Israel, which was supposed to be a work of God’s omnipotence, God talking to Jacob – who is an allegory of Israel: “Don’t be afraid, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you: when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, neither shall the flame kindle on you. For I am Yahweh your God”, in Auschwitz turned into the antithesis, and hence a threat that has a completely different sender than a good father: Be afraid, or else nobody will redeem you. I am calling you by the number, you are no one’s. You will go to the fire and a flame will consume you. You are alone.

Taking under consideration Remi Brague’s point of view in a discussion of the European identity, the author of the article searches for a new insightful consideration on the problem of ‘being European’. In the cultural perspective the individual sense of belonging, creating an identity, depends on both historical and conscientious mechanisms, thus on the changeable factors affecting the individualities entangled in a struggle for ‘being European’. Therefore Brague introduced, instead of a ‘stable idea of Europe’ which European-to-be can relates to, the cultural form of ‘Roman attitude’ which remains crucial for creating the ‘European identity’. Actually, to put it bluntly, becoming an ‘heir of Rome’ is indispensable to become ‘European’, to exercise ‘Roman attitude’.

This paper explores the phenomenon of studentification in the UK and Poland. More specifically, the paper illustrates cultural base of conflicts and debates connected with studentification and methods of its researching. It is argued that there is a difference between geographers and cultural urban studies vision of student communities and the geographical, economic, social and culturaleffects of the promotion of higher education in the end of 20th century. Studentification generate gentrification, but it has also a positive impact on city dwellers and local communities. Enlarged student populations should be integrated into communities characterized by much the same styles of life, modes of consumption, inherited cultural capital and “good taste”. Students are dispersed to different parts of towns and cities. These new tendencies in student population may foster resentment and conflict between students and established residents. It is asserted that the impact of cultural factors could not be the most important for the residential geographies of students, however they are crucial for characteristic of such concepts like studenthood and studentland, closely tight with the very notion of studentification. They are a factor in the rise of studentification and the mobility of established communities. It is argued that these young communities signified lucid exemplars that the city-university relations seek to engender. The paper concludes by considering some possible issues of studentification in the field of cultural urban studies.

The current population of widows and widowers in Poland is over 3.1 mln, whereof the vast majority is over 60 years old. Death of long-life partner is one of the most stressful events in an individual’s life and it may affect their physical and mental condition. At the same time acceptance of spouse’s death and successful adaptation to widowhood are the developmental tasks of late adulthood phase, which may provide to personal growth. A widowed person can decide if they desire to engage new romantic relationship. Research shows that starting a new relationship is motivated by various factors: psychological (e.g. spouse idealization, anxiety), biological (e.g. age, health), and external factors (e.g. socioeconomic situation). New late-life romantic relationships differ from previous stages of life – we can observe changes in: relationship goals, dynamic of the relationship and together activities, although seniors experience passionate love the same way that younger generations do.

In recent decades, a wide range of Scandinavian crime novels have conquered Hungarian readers, providing a more sophisticated perspective on the existing image of Scandinavian cultures and societies, with their intriguing social content and appealing landscapes. This wave of crime fiction has not only contributed to a better understanding of Scandinavia, but also drawn attention to the genre itself, which culminated in a parody written by a Hungarian stand-up comedian, Zoltán Kőhalmi. In his incorporation of all the obligatory ingredients of Scandinavian crime novels, the comedian not only reuses the self-image that Scandinavian crime narratives convey, he pillories the genre requirements by exaggerating the use of the most well-known characteristics. The analysis of Kőhalmi’s satirical use of Scandinavian crime narratives serves as a case study for a closer understanding of conceptions of Scandinavia in contemporary Hungary.
